It's been like Christmas. My wonderful friend Joel, hosted a shoot with another of my very good friends, Beth Hostetler, my daughter Raven, and I last weekend. It was one of those spontaneous things that turned out to be a super great time spent on the road chatting with Raven on the way there. Once we were there, seeing how surprised Joel was and how much fun everyone seemed to have...it was such a wonderful experience, and I'm so happy I got to share it with my daughter. Do you have any idea how interesting it is to see how each Photographer captured the same subject so much differently? The processing that each of them does as well. It's just a beautiful thing to be a part of. Anyway, getting to be a part of this was amazing. Getting to spend that time with these awesome people was even better. And to top it all off, sharing it with my daughter. It is extremely humbling to take a look into your own galaxy, it helps you remember that all in all, “You’re not your job. You’re not how much money you have in the bank. Going through pictures, thinking of my grandparents, getting in touch with what tangible things I will eventually leave behind. The short answer is, and you may have guessed it, pictures. Printed pictures at that, mainly because you don’t need batteries to see them, they can’t be lost due to malfunction, and really, technology will advance and render our digital files useless in the near future, it happened to 📼 , 📀, 💾, it will happen to Facebook, Instagram, hard drives, and 💻. I guess what I’m getting at is print your photos, if you can’t we can do it for you. If you want we can also get you set up with personalized photo albums. ——————————————————————————— TLDR: learn how to photograph the Milky Way. I try to capture the feelings from the day. Lawrence McFarland (1942 - )

My formative years were spent in Dodge City, Kansas, where, as a young boy I went to the theater every Saturday to watch cowboy movies. These Westerns movies instilled in me my perspective for life — to be straightforward and honest. I am very grateful for those influences. However, there was one thing that always bothered me about the movies that were frequently set in my boyhood home. When I walked outside the movie house and looked out across the plains I did not see the lush open spaces and the mountains that were portrayed in the cinematic representations of the West. One day when I was around nine years old, I went looking for that landscape thinking it was just beyond my view. I was not running away from anything, rather I was running toward a mythical place that seemed to exist somewhere out there. As a result, I decided at that early age to explore and document the terrain of my youth.

There are few things that scream "summer nights in Kansas" quite like watching the fireflies flicker in and out of view around dusk. They're not super active hear, but are definitely more so than they were in the city, and so I've been meaning to photograph them for a while. I decided to stack a series of 3-second exposures in order to capture their illuminated flights over several minutes, but before it got so dark that they'd lose the context of their surroundings...which, of course, couldn't be anything other than my Tree-Across-the-Field. It has taken me some time to adjust to the general idea of editing milky way shots. Certain actions seem counter intuitive from the moment we first align our shot, all the way through post processing.  This Milky Way photo was taken about 5 minutes outside Junction City Kansas where you start losing some of the light pollution elements, if I were to go another 15-20 in the same direction i would eventually hit dark spots where you could see the outline of the milky way with the naked eye, and thusly frame it better.  I still have a lot to learn when it comes to Milky Way photography, but, I have seen worse from more experienced people, which makes me happy.  For those of you wondering, that orange light above the horizon, is light pollution from a few houses, and I 70.
