“It’s another sandstorm,” you say, turning to the man seated at the makeshift table behind you.
The worn cloth covering the door flaps in the desert wind, masking your sigh as you take a seat on a crate next to him.
His hand reaches for yours, the bandages already in place for his nightly trek.
“Daniel…please don’t go out in this, it’s too dangerous.” you beg him, and he places his other clothed hand over yours.
“I’ll be fine, my love.  It’s only a few miles' journey, and I’ll return by tomorrow evening.”
Tumblr media
The soft press of his lips on yours still lingers, even now as you’re being awoken by the sound of chains, the cold press of iron on your naked ankle.
“Daniel…” your whisper but a small sound in the massive chamber surrounding you.
Your heart throbs in your chest, the pain of knowing he will come for you.
That thought should comfort you, yet it does the complete opposite.
The terrifying words of your captors play in your head as you lie down on the cold, filthy floor.
“These are the consequences of trying to part ways from us. You’d better hope he comes for you, human, else we will cast you into the pits and allow them to decide your fate.”
The shocked expressions at your response allow you a small reprieve from the weight of your anguish.
“Oh he will come for me.  But it’s your doom that is making its way here when he finds me gone.  I will pray for your very souls.”
If only you were lying.
If only you could prevent what was about to happen.
If only you could stop him from coming.
If only…but you knew your Daniel.
The memories of moments you’ve shared, words spoken like vows between you are all you can think of in this dark place.
He will come for you.
He will tear the very fabric of reality to reach you and your fear is palpable as you think of him finding you gone.
“Oh Daniel…I’m so sorry.  I never wanted you to see this place ever again…”
The endless wails of the cells that surround you drown out your choked, agonized whisper.
Tumblr media
The bright orange of the setting sun illuminates the dark space you’ve both come to call home.
His face, windburnt and drawn with exhaustion falls when he takes in the empty hovel, noting your absence before realization strikes.
As his eyes scan the small space, dread washes over him as he notes the broken pottery, the obvious signs of a struggle in the torn tapestries you’d hung on the wall so lovingly.
The man standing within the small space trembles quietly as he turns your words over in his racing mind.
“It’s too dangerous.” You’d warned.
Too late, he realizes that it was you who faced the true danger.
His shadowed face no longer resembles the human facade he has worn to keep the demons at bay, his eyes darkening with rage.
He didn’t need the burnt symbols left upon the walls to know who had come; the charred remains of the home he shares with you only intensifies his quiet fury.
The rotten scent lingers in the dry desert air, and his nostrils flare as he turns over the small table you’d shared so many meals together.
The scent of your precious blood draws his darkening eyes to the dried stain, his trembling hand brushing across the evidence of your tragic encounter.
A soft golden flame begins to burn within the inky depth of his obsidian eyes.
Though no soul is witness to the change that occurs, it can be felt for miles surrounding the small abode.
A darkness descends upon the day, deeper than the impending night, and even the smallest creature feels a shiver for reasons unknown to them.
His whisper is a low, deep growl, but the wind carries it past where the sun hides behind the horizon.
“With my last breath, I’ll find you.  And they’ll reap what they’ve sown.”

spy x family x lookism
has anyone ever done dg x gun? has anyone ever even thought of that? no? well let me try and convince you to convince Me to someday write the only valid spy x family!lookism au i can think of instead of just you know. shitting it out on tumblr and leaving it to rot
1. gun park as loid forger
spy man from foreign country (pretend he’s japanese) sneaks into new country (korea) under disguise to stop a war (the 4 crews) by assassinating military advisor (charles choi) of the president (steve hong)
has multiple names: spy name ‘white oni’, previous names include ‘yamazaki yuzuru’, current given name is ‘park jong gun’
currently works as bodyguard and fake husband to idol singer ‘dg’
does not know real identity (mercenary) of his fake husband
2. dg as yor forger
sweet and angelic by day (idol dg, real name kang dagyeom), won’t hesitate to shed blood and commit violence by night (james lee / ‘legend’)
is most often hired by charles choi to do his dirty work but cannot disobey bc charles choi has dirt on him (committing violence and breaking the law)
hopes someone will destroy charles choi for him so he can finally be free
does not know real identity (spy) of his fake husband
3. daniel park as anya forger
age 5 to start with, was orphaned after mother passed away and father (park jinyoung) was arrested for conducting illegal experiments on kids
is adopted by gun park first, but dg also warms up to him, which is great bc he now has 1) two doting parents 2) life like a spy kdrama
psychic due to pjy experiments and has excellent common sense but is academically a bit of a dumdum. math is his worst enemy
knows secret identities of both parents but they don’t know he knows
4. jay hong as damian desmond
second son of the president but does not hold a candle to his superstar hyung kitae even tho he’s smartest out of all jae won prestigious elementary school first graders and probably could handle third grade homework
gun originally wants daniel to befriend jay to get closer to steve hong and then charles choi by default, does not expect the father son relationship to be so terrible
falls in love with daniel at first sight when daniel punches kid zack (re: damian Anya Can Do No Wrong filter) but suffers from extreme social anxiety so he comes off as tsun a lot
5. others of note
zoe as becky: adores daniel like a blood brother, idolizes dg
goo as franky: the fun uncle! but horrible with kids
kouji as handler: brings messages from the big boss but is more chill about things.
eugene as yuri: unhealthy obsession with knowing what dg is doing all the time. onesided childhood friend of dg
the rest of j high squad + johan: the rest of janiel’s class. issues crop up, daniel solves those issues to make friends in the name of world peace, dg wonders how such a bully like gun managed to raise such a sweet son
crystal: charles choi’s middle school aged daughter + hi bye friends with kitae. hence the jay to kitae to crystal to charles choi pipeline (aka gun’s plan 2 for Project Friendship)

pairing ── kang haerin x female reader
summary ── you and haerin are often being noticed by a lot of people, not just because of your uniqueness and talents- but it's more of your lack of interactions with each other ever since your debut. but of course, no one really sees the behind-the-scenes.
contains ── wholesome, idol au, phoning lives, lynsil duo name, secretly whipped haerin and reader, a rather realistic romance scenes
taglist ── n/a
[masterlist]
── ── ꒰ [◉"] ꒱ ── ──
you have been the quietest and most introverted person in your group, along with haerin.
both of you shared the same MBTI type, but surprisingly, neither of you has really spoken to each other as often as you thought you had. and you've only noticed this once when your fans, known as bunnies, ask you about it — 'have you ever talked to haerin behind the scenes?' and ever since then, you became more aware of this issue.
well, it wasn't an issue at all, but it does concern your fans. they didn't want to misunderstand it, and neither do you want them to be too.
though unbeknownst to you, bunnies have also asked haerin about it in their phoning app. then if ever you have a chance, you would try having a long conversation or just something to interact with haerin.
still, you felt bad. you didn't think that fans would notice it and even you didn't know about it until you got told. because of this, you suddenly became aware and curious about haerin.
─────
a couple of days later, all of you were practicing for the next music show performance with dance breaks when danielle mentioned that she wanted to have a livestream to talk to bunnies, even just for a little bit, just like they've done before.
fortunately, they all agreed and took a break by live streaming to talk with their fans.
and you made sure to sit next to haerin this time, not hesitating to take this rare opportunity. all of you sat on the floor with danielle's phone leaning to the mirror wall, facing them.
minji sat on the very left with danielle, followed by hyein, hanni, haerin and finally, you at the very right. since the live was in horizontal yet it was a small frame to fit everyone, they had to scoot closer to each other.
and of course, that meant for haerin and you to cling onto each other.
with minji starting with a cheerful greeting, the others followed suit with only you and haerin waving at the camera with small smiles. naturally, as you tried, you sat behind haerin just a bit and rested your chin on her shoulder.
as if it was natural for her, she rests her head against yours causing her strand of hair to brush your nose. you sniff before turning away from haerin abruptly to sneeze on the side, followed by a light cough.
haerin hovers her hand over your arm, "are you okay, unnie?" she asked, in a quieter tone as she moves close to you to cover your form from the camera while the others talk to their fans.
you snort lightly, your face flushes in embarrassment. "yeah, sorry.. your hair just tickles my nose." you smiled at her sheepishly, to which she responds with a short giggle.
she apologizes and gently bumps her head on your shoulder, leaning her weight to you. you laugh and pat her head, leaning your head against hers before both of you pull away to focus again to the live.
then throughout the live stream, both of you were just clinging onto each other like there's no tomorrow.
haerin, unknowingly, holds your hand and plays with your fingers gently and absentmindedly. you let her as you rest your chin on her shoulder again. you two were just stuck onto each other, and you could tell she was enjoying it with you despite the lack of communication.
nonetheless, you love your little moments with haerin like this. it only makes things feel worthy and peaceful. and safe to say, your fans were happy to see you and haerin sticking close together.
─────
another time of your rare interactions with haerin was your solo live in the vocal room of your company. after a long day of practice for your performance, you had decided to go live alone.
in all honesty, you just wanted to take a break from everything. these days, you feel so restless and distressed that you can't make any conversation with your members at all.
thankfully, they respected that and left you alone.
back to the present, you patiently waited for your fans to see your notification and join your live as you sat on the chair and leaned your arms onto the table. you played with your fringes quietly, softly humming your group's song as you waited. after a minute, you decided to start with your introduction.
releasing your fringes, you sent a small smile towards the camera and gave a little wave. "hello, yeoreobun... i hope you guys are doing fantastic today and if not, it will be alright soon enough, promise." you raised your pinky finger to the camera before letting out a giggle and dropping your hand down.
"i am in the vocal room right now, and we just finished practicing just a minute ago, so i am really sorry because i do look hideous right now."
sheepishly letting out a chuckle, you ruffled your hair to at least make it look nicer than earlier. "where are the members? ah, minji-unnie and hanni-unnie went outside together with hyein. dani and haerin probably went home by now." you replied to the comment, a small smile was still there in your face.
you nodded at the other comment, "yeah! i ate already, and i also ate a lot of marshmallows today! earlier," you excitedly began to share what happened before the practice.
"haerin and i got to the practice room together, earlier than the other members."
"then, out of nowhere, she gave me a bag of marshmallows!" you chuckle, "and she only gave me that look— i don't know what kind of look, but it was almost like i have to eat it or else she'll force me to." you cough lightly. "ah, but i like marshmallows so i ate some. not too much 'cuz it'll be too much for my stomach." you shrug before grinning to the camera.
"haerin, recently, likes to give me different types of snacks at any time. be it a candy or the snack snack, she'll give me it." you laugh again, shaking your head. "now, i have a lot of snacks inside my drawers because of her!"
then your other phone, your personal phone, suddenly vibrated beside you on the table. you paused your sharing and looked at your screen, just to see haerin messaging you.
'can i join?'
you smiled at her message, finding it cute for her to ask even through a message. you took your phone and turn back to the camera and grins excitedly, "guys, i guess we will have a guest coming in tonight!"
you quickly sent a thumbs up and a blue heart to haerin before turning it off. "she'll be here in a minute, i suppose." you informed before a comment caught your attention.
"a quick outfit check? sure~" you stood up to show your outfit for tonight— which you wore your black sweater with a cute cat print in the front, then a long navy-blue baggy pants that you borrowed from hanni, then your favorite pair of nike shoes.
you twirled and grinned, dimples showing on the side of your lips. "i really like my style because it just looks so comfortable! especially my sweater— i borrowed these pants from hanni-unnie because surprisingly, i accidentally wore this today to the practice and thought that it was mine!"
you exclaimed- more like a protest(?) as you sat down again on the chair, "but then hanni-unnie noticed it and told me that it was hers. in my defense, i always forget what clothes i own so, often, i accidentally keep wearing their clothes everyday and i never missed the chance to get told by them that it was theirs."
you sighed, "but it suits me, so hanni-unnie gave it to me." you giggle happily, "thank you, unnie." you thanked hanni through the screen, though you weren't sure if she was watching your live, but you didn't mind it.
then a knock came from the door.
you jumped and made a weird noise as you stood and waddled over the door to open it, revealing haerin with a face mask covering her mouth.
"hi hi, haerin." you smiled at her and gestured to her to sit on the chair you were previously sitting on. she timidly entered and waved at the camera shyly as she sat down on your chair, while you took another chair on the side. "guys, our guest is our kitty cat, haerin kang!"
you clap your hands, while haerin laughs shyly and reluctantly removes her face mask. "hello, yeoreobun. i hope..." she paused as she stared at the camera, causing you to look at her in confusion. you didn't utter a word before she continued, "i hope everyone is doing well today."
you quietly giggle as you scoot next to her, close to the table to read the comments. "oh, bunnies sound so happy." haerin smiles as she reads the comments with you.
then you ask your fans, "yeoreobun... do i have a duo name with haerin?" to which haerin blinks before nodding mutely.
your eyes skillfully scanned over the comments that replied to your question, "kittyhog, eng? haey/n? too common though..." you mumble each comment you could read while haerin listens to you while looking at the comments.
"...hedrin? sounds cute but..." you pout as you want to mention why they left out your name and used your representative animal instead. and it seems that haerin knows the reason behind your point since she laughs quietly and hides her face behind your back.
"...guys, your ideas are too fancy for us to use." you chuckle sheepishly, shaking your head. "maybe something simple? not too common but just simple and cute." your lips pursed as you bat your eyes at them.
then two comments caught both you and haerin's eyes, causing you to read it in sync. "hushlyn and lynsil?" both of you blinked twice in surprise at the same time, making you two burst out of laughter in silence.
haerin leans her whole body to you while you drop your upper body onto her lap, wheezing silently and gasping for air. the comments were filled with crying emojis and laughing emojis from the fans who were watching two girlies laughing with no sound.
while you were still laughing and dying at the same time, haerin somehow managed to calm down despite letting out some short laugh with small tears in her eyes.
she pushed her hair from her face because it was getting in her way to see the comments.
"why is it hushlyn and lynsil, bunnies?" to which, in a few minutes after you got tired from laughing and just gasping for air with your body on haerin's legs, it was answered with a good, understandable answer.
"oh! hushlyn from the sound hush, and lynsil, lyn is the calm vibe and sil is silence. ohh-" haerin approves the names, giving the camera a thumbs up while you looked at the ceiling in confusion at the new names that the fans has given to you.
"sounds great but it's-"
"i really like it. do you like it, unnie?"
haerin questioned you, turning her cat-eyes at you in wonder and curiosity. you could only blink twice before smiling in agreement, though with a bit of reluctance, "i love the names! i personally like lynsil because it's easy to say it."
haerin laughs heartily at your comment, it made the fans fall in love with her existence again and again. (me fr)
"thank you, bunnies, for spending time with us! goodnight~" you and haerin waved at the camera with a shy smile as you pressed your side with hers, "bye bye!"
then you tapped the red button on the screen to end the live. haerin giggles quietly at the memory of the funny moments earlier. you turn to her and laugh with her, "you laughed too much tonight, haerin-ssi!"
you teased her as you messaged your manager that you had just ended live and are with haerin right now to return back to your dorm. haerin continues to laugh before breathing to catch air.
"sorry, sorry- you were just too funny."
you raised one brow at her playfully, "quite the first time, but i'm glad it made you laugh." you glanced at the time on your phone, "it's really late now. you wanna stop by the convenience store before returning back home?"
you suggested as both of you began to pack your bags, not forgetting your chargers and turning off the lights and air conditioner before closing the door behind you.
haerin nodded to your suggestion, quite excited to buy a snack and drink for tonight.
─────
"we should buy some for the others too." you said before adding that you'll pay for everything too so you encouraged haerin buy anything she likes.
haerin smiles excitedly and nodded as she takes a basket and follows you around like a baby duck. you head first to the very back where the drinks are and turns to haerin. "you like chocolate milk, right?"
to which haerin nodded, "yeah, chocolate milk sounds good." then you drop her drink onto the basket carefully before finding other drinks for the others.
haerin was just watching and waiting for you behind you with curious cat eyes. then afterward, both of you headed towards the snack section and haerin went to get her favorite snacks.
after a little while, your basket was already filled and walked to the cashier to pay.
you handed your cash to the lady politely, "thank you so much, have a safe night." you told the lady with a smile as you linked your arms with haerin with your unoccupied arms, while the other hands were busy carrying the paper bag.
the lady laughs heartily and nodded at your way, watching both girls leaving the store.
as you were walking with haerin, she had wanted to hold hands with you so now, you're walking your way to your dorm with your hand clasped onto her hand.
you don't know why she was suddenly acting like this, but you assumed that it was just one of her times where she gets a bit clingy and touchy.
you didn't mind this kind of behavior at all; in fact, you find it cute. "unnie, have you been noticing something between us before?" haerin starts, cutting the comfortable silence upon them.
you take a quick glance at her before looking ahead, taking a note that you and haerin are the only people walking the sidewalk, except with some vehicles dashing through the road.
"yeah, bunnies asked me about it." you chuckle, tightening your grip around hers. "i actually didn't know about it until they mentioned it. after that, i became aware of us." you pursed your lips as you wondered over it.
"...did it bother you?"
haerin immediately shook her head, "no, not at all!" then she went quiet again. you looked at her, seeing as she stared at the ground like it was so interesting. you wonder what was going through her mind.
"but it's good that we've been interacting recently. it felt natural being like this with you, y'know?" you smile warmly, shifting your hand to pull her closer to your side and linked arms.
"and i'm a bit surprised to see you clinging with me a lot too." you chuckle as haerin averts her eyes away, hiding her flushed face from you. "..it just felt natural too. i thought i would feel a lot awkward with you, but it was the opposite way."
you felt touched by her words, "i feel the same too."

The second the leader entered the dorm with the rest of the girls behind her, she feels a sense of energy being off at the sight of seeing you sitting on the couch in the living room.
"Is Haerin not keeping you company?" Minji asks, setting down the food and cake on the countertop.
You look up from your phone, startled while wondering what time the others have gotten back. You let out a half smile, shaking your head.
"She did keep me company." You lie.
Great; the first day and you're already lying for the sake of someone who probably and surely doesn't even like you.
"I'll go call her to help set up." Danielle announces with a gentle smile, rushing towards the end of the hall where Haerin's and your room sat.
Minji hums with a nod, looking over at you with concern. She's worried that you're regretting the decision to come over here from SM.
"Y/N! Which hat do you like on me?" Hanni breaks the weird atmosphere, holding up a princess crown and a bear headband with a bright smile, scrunching her nose.
You let out a small giggle at how adorable your member is. Getting up from the couch, you walk to where Hanni is and tilts your head while thinking. Eyes constantly darting back and fourth between the two options before catching the other choices in the bag next to Hanni.
"You're so cute, Y/N!" Hanni scrunches her nose at how cute you look trying to concentrate.
"I think this one seems to match you well." You reach for the bunny ears in the bag, holding it up next to the Vietnamese with a content smile at how well it resembled her.
Hanni smiles, showing her gums as she grabbed it. "If Y/N says it matches me, I'll wear it."
"Minji unnie matches this bear headband." You speak with a small smile, handing it to the oldest who is checking off a few things to make the best welcome party.
The leader feels her ears flushed from you calling her 'unnie', grabbing the headband from you and clearing her throat afterwards. "Thank you, Y/N."
"Oh get up woman!" Hyein exclaims, making Minji choke back on her saliva before turning over to you. "Unnie, pick one out for me too!"
Strange.
You turn to the youngest, letting out a hum as you take a look at the remaining options. Before you could make a choice, Danielle emerges out from the hallway while dragging a lifeless Haerin along with her.
"Did we miss anything?" Danielle asks, noticing how Minji and Hanni have headbands on and seeing you look so cute focusing on what to pick for Hyein.
Hanni can only giggle in response. "My Y/N picked out my headband for me."
Haerin snaps her head at the 'my'.
MY?
The youngest excitedly nods. "And you should've seen how red Mi-"
"-Hyein-ah?" Minji glares, having the youngest exert a low pout on her lips.
The other Australian releases her grip from Haerin before prancing over to you too. "Omg!!! Could you pick one out for me too?"
The cat-eyed female could once again scoff and roll her eyes at how her members are acting right now.
What a joke, really.
The feline-like female can only watch with a bitter taste in her mouth as the other girls are fighting for your attention on helping them choose out a stupid accessory (besides minji who's still a bit flustered and taken aback from you calling her 'unnie').
"Let's start making the desserts and prepare the food!" Danielle suggests, having the others nod in agreement after all of them got assigned a headband from you. "That way, when we're finished eating, we can all have a sweet treat!"
Hanni gently held both of your shoulders from behind, motioning you to sit comfortably at the couch while promising that she'll make something delicious for you.
"Haerin, will you keep Y/N company?" Minji sternly commends.
The introvert could only hum with a small nod. What other option does she have?
Apparently, the cat-eyed female who thought others having you pick out a stupid accessory all of a sudden had a change of heart because she's already making her way to where the bag of party favors all sit in. She quickly turns around to take a peek at you, noticing that you, the person that they're throwing the party for doesn't have an accessory.
Looking down at a few options, the cat-eyed female grabs one.
"It matches you."
You blink a few times at the sight in front of you. Blankly looking at the hand, which is handing you a princess tiara.
Are you hearing her correctly? What happened to the Haerin earlier?
"Are you going to take it or just sit and stare at it?" The female who is barely older than you monotonously asks.
Fighting the urge to roll your eyes all the way to the back of your head, you grab it from her. Getting startled at the touch both yours and hers fingers had. Coughing to get rid of the weird air, you put on the tiara.
"Oh-you have some hair-"
"-Where? Here?"
"-No, a little more to your left-no, it's-I got it." The other leans down to fix the piece of hair standing out from you and putting it behind your ear. She stares at you afterwards, you and her make eye contact prompting her to back away.
Rubbing the back of her neck, she motions over to the bag of party favors. "You're not going to pick one out for me?"
"Huh? Oh, I can if you want me to."
From afar, Hyein is trying her best to hold back Hanni from barging over. "Do something! She's trying to make moves on my Y/N!"
"Haerin does like pretty girls." Danielle could only say, laughing at how Hanni is overreacting.
Tumblr media
Haerin awkwardly sits away from you on the other side of the couch, a space evident between you two.
Her hands are laying on her lap as she attempts to concentrate on the screen in front of the both of you. She still can't believe you're 100% on board with debuting as a member of NewJeans.
What could this mean for her though? Could there be possibly a concept change last minute for the comeback all because of a newcomer? How will this affect NewJeans positively? When will ADOR announce to Bunnies that they're debuting a new sixth member after releasing countless of hits.
Haerin can admit you're pretty, yes. She's certainly not blind. However, everything just feels like an irrational choice. She's not happy with Min Hee Jin's decisions this time.
She wants to ask you why you chose to be apart of a rash choice.
"Y/N unnie!" Hyein runs out from the kitchen, scurrying over to sit right next to you, leading you to sit a bit closer to Haerin. "I think you're really cool."
The feline-like female furrows her eyebrows, wondering why the other girls are perfectly fine with this. She furrows her brows even more when seeing your eyes crinkle brightly, a perfect smile that could make anyone caught in your charms.
"Oh, Hyeinnie, I think you're more cooler than me." You gently say back to her.
The big baby shakes her head. "Min Hee Jin told us earlier that you've been a trainee since you were 6, is that true?"
6? Haerin can feel how tense you've gotten at the subject.
"Haha. I was casted at 5 and was wary about the idea. But they kept casting me til I finally gave in." You managed to say without sounding too exhausted about your now previous company, the place you grew up to as home.
Hyein nods, interested in your early life. "I see. I can understand why they kept casting you, you look like a star, Y/N unnie."
Oh please. Haerin wants to snort at the nonsense. A star can dance to a whole choreography without messing up every damn 5 seconds.
"Say that for today." Haerin mumbles under her breath lowly, enough for only her to hear.
"Hyein-ah! Quit bothering Y/N and help us set up the table for dinner!" Hanni yells from the kitchen, resulting in the giant baby to groan loudly in agony before getting up from where she sat.
Haerin laughs at Hyein's antics, shaking her head at the oldest's scolding.
You smile a bit at the feline-like female's laughter. Ever since you've gotten here this morning, it seems like Haerin has been in a weird mood and just doesn't like to smile. At least around you, that is.
"She's cute when she smiles." You "think" to yourself, returning back at the screen.
The female besides you quickly turns to look at you, meeting with your side profile instead.
Did you mean to say that out loud?
Haerin feels the back of her neck burning up at those words, she gulps not wanting to take any meaning into it before slightly shaking her head and going back to look at the same screen you were looking at.
Haerin isn't like the other girls; she won't let a pretty girl get to her like that. She's standing her ground on why you being apart of this team is such a bad idea.
Right? RIGHT!
Just in time, the other members finally got done preparing the food.
"Alright! Time to eat!" Danielle loudly exclaims, walking in carefully with a big pot of wonton soup (the other girls totally didn't search up your favorite foods) for this party.
You immediately stand up from your spot, wanting to rush over to help the Australian.
"Oh no! Sit down Y/N, you're our special princess." Danielle brightly smiles, setting down the pot on a thick coaster. "Rin, could you help Hanni out back in the kitchen?"
Haerin tenses, looking at her best friend with a bothered expression at the idea of having to do stuff FOR you. Prompting the Australian to mouth the word 'please' with her adorable puppy eyes, leaving Haerin to sigh and get off from her seat.
"Y/N-ah! You look so pretty with this crown." Danielle turns her eyes back to you, looking at you with immediate affection.
You smile back at the other, eye-smile crinkling. "Thanks, Jihye unnie."
The older can't help but to gasp again at you calling her 'unnie' with that cute eye-smile. Oh, how she understands what Hanni is talking about now. (you're very real).
"Hey! Bro! Bro! Back off my Y/N!" Hanni glares at her fellow Australian mate, with Haerin clenching her hands tightly around the soda bottles at the word 'my'. "I wont hesitate to throw these cups at you!"
The 05' just purses her lips while shaking her head, grabbing the cups from Hanni.
"Bro, I can hear your voice from the kitchen." Minji tiredly says, emerging out from the kitchen with another big pot of spicy rice cakes and Hyein accompanying her with bowls and plates. "Tone it down a notch before you scare our new member away."
New member. That word makes you happy.
On the other hand, the irritation that Haerin always keeps feeling is creeping at her head.
New member. Oh, how she wishes it wasn't true.
Tumblr media
Seeing your new team all enjoy their food, you can't help but to smile gently at them all (not haerin though, she made you mad by not handing you a pair of chopsticks even though you asked).
"You know how we planned to eat desserts after?" Hanni yawns, stretching out her arms. "I'm too full and tired to."
The others nod in agreement.
"Okay. Let's pack them and take them with us to our schedule tomorrow." Minji suggests, darting her eyes between Haerin and you.
The Vietnamese knows the tricks up her friend's sleeves. "Last one to touch their nose has to clean up these dishes and pack the cookies away!"
Everyone INSTANTLY touch their noses, you and Hanni both being the last ones.
"Ahh~ I get to be with my Y/N!" Hanni jumps up in excitement, knowing she lost on purpose (she couldn't help herself)
There it goes again; the way Haerin's jaw clenches at 'my Y/N'.
And for some strange reason, she hates to be around you, yet alone stand near you. And yet, she likes to be near you. Like now, while the others fought over who got to sit next to you during dinner, the cat eyed female silently walks over to you, taking the spot everyone seems to only care about.
But it doesn't make any sense for Haerin and what she's about to do.
"I'll help Y/N clean and put away the cookies." She monotonously says. "After all, she is my roommate."
Minji pleasantly smiles at the feline-resmebling female, nodding. "Great, that works out then."
"Wait! No!" Hanni argues, standing up from the ground with her hands in fists. "I lost though?"
Hyein yawns, stretching out her arms. "Just let Haerin do it, it makes sense anyways. Aren't you tired anyways?"
"Yeah. Bro." Minji teases, sticking out her tongue at the younger.
Hanni dramatically "fumes", her nostrils flaring in anger. "Dani, hold me back before I do something regretful."
"Let's start cleaning up before something breaks like last time." Haerin gets up, collecting the pile of plates.
You blink, processing what your member just said. Break? Last time?
"We don't have all night." The other said from where she's standing, peering behind her shoulder to look back at you with an annoyed expression.
You can't help but to silently sigh, grabbing the rest of the plates and cups and shortly following the cat eyed girl into the kitchen.
"Just leave them on the counter." Haerin shortly says, turning the sink on.
You shake your head. "We're supposed to be working together?"
"Y/N! Haerin! We're going to get ready for bed now." Hanni yells from the other room.
"Don't forget! We have to wake up at 5 today for the reshoot!" Minji also yells.
Getting up at 5AM to do a reshoot on the concept photos rubbed Haerin in the wrong way. Why does she have to suffer her precious sleep for a stranger?
You notice how loud Haerin has gotten when it comes to the dishes all floating in the sink, causing all sorts of clatters and ruckus.
"Everything okay over there?" You ask, coming over to help her with drying the dishes.
Haerin tenses up, feeling anger creep up her neck. "Just back off, okay? I got this."
"I just wanted to help you?"
The feline-like female scoffs, inhaling and exhaling deeply. "I don't need your help."
"What's your problem?" You fume, looking at the plate in the other's hand.
Haerin shrugs, rinsing off the plate and placing it aside for her to dry later with a wipe cloth.
"Oh. I get it. You're still mad that I messed up during today's practice."
Haerin rolls her eyes, knowing you at least got one thing right today and it was the fact that yes, you did mess up and yes, Haerin did get upset about it. She is not going to sit here and watch you jeopardize her career that she's worked so HARD for. No, Haerin was not going to let that happen.
"Pack the cookies up." She unemotionally says, continuing to rinse the remaining plates trying to not let her anger take the best of her.
Not wanting to pick a fight, you obliged and went over to where the tray of cookies sat on the kitchen's island. Opening the container sitting besides them, you placed the heart-shaped cookies into it with a soft smile at how thankful you are for the members.
"Try not to screw it up for the rest of us during the reshoot, yeah?" Haerin dries the last plate up and places them in the cabinet. "I'm getting ready for bed, close the lights out after."
What the hell was that about?
Most importantly, what the fuck is up Haerin's ass for her to be so mean and rude all the time.
"I should've never left SM..." You couldn't help but to quietly mumble under your breath, regrets are finally sinking in to you.
Tumblr media
"I wonder how Y/N unnie is going to look in the outfits." Hyein jumps up in excitement upon arriving to yours, Minji's and Danielle's dressing room.
Hanni nods in agreement. "I still can't believe they put me with you two and not them."
"Excuse me?" The youngest whips her head in instant speed, looking offended. "It's bad enough I have to share a room with you, you think I want to paired up with you, Hanni unnie?"
Haerin sighs, knocking on the door of the dressing room.
"Coming!" Danielle says from the other side, opening the door slightly and letting out a cute noise before widening the door to let her members in. "You guys look so good!"
Haerin smiles softly in response, linking her arm with Australian.
"Where's my Y/Nnnie?" Hanni walks in, scanning the room before taking a seat down on the couch.
Not that word again.
"She left real quick to get a drink with Minji unnie." Danielle replies, dragging Haerin with her to sit down on the couch in the dressing room. "But omg guys! She looks super pretty. Like she was already pretty when she first arrived, right? But after her hair got done, her makeup and her fit of clothing, AHH she looks amazing!"
The Vietnamese smirks, looking at the other Aussie. "Sounds like Jihye has a crush?"
"What? No." Danielle flat out denies.
However, Haerin stares at her best friend, confused as to why her face is suddenly all flushed bright pink.
"You sure?" Hyein asks, wondering about the actual truth. "Because if you do, you have two other girls fighting for her attention."
Danielle gasps, covering her mouth. "Omg, whoo?"
"Me!" Hanni retorts, rolling her eyes.
"And Minji unnie."
Haerin cannot believe it. She really absolutely can't.
'What are they on about?' Haerin cannot help but to think to herself.
"Whether you guys have a crush or not, we're a team so nothing is going to happen anyways." Haerin breaks the slight argue, unlocking her phone to interact with 'Bunnies'.
"Okay, whatever." Hanni replies, rolling her eyes again at the younger's 'nerd' talk.
A knock on the door leads the other four girls startled, wondering who it is.
"Hey Dani, we're back." Minji announces from outside.
Danielle quickly fixes her hair, releasing her arm from her best friend's, she gets up with a slight prance. Clearing her throat before opening the door.
"You guys took so long, I was starting to miss you." She frowns with a pout, earning a small giggle from you.
Haerin turns her head at the sound from you, she feels like she suddenly can't breathe at your appearance.
Dani was right.
"Y/N unnie! You look so pretty!" Hyein jumps up, darting towards you, Minji and Danielle.
Seeing Hyein, you smile and wave at her. Darting your eyes to the other two members sitting on the couch, Hanni waves back with a wink while Haerin stares at you before looking back down at her phone.
You conclude that the member is an iPad baby.
"Y/N, this bow matches you so well!" Danielle said, for what seems like the 6th time today.
She tries to look occupied with her phone but her eyes are constantly staring down at the way Minji's arms is linked with yours and how Danielle is fixing the cute bow in your hair.
"Are you excited for the concept photos, unnie?" Hyein asks, leaving you wide-eyes at the sudden question.
You start to walk, to take a seat and everyone follows you, wanting to know your answer. Most importantly, they want to know how you feel about being apart of the team, on the second day.
Something naturally must be pulling you close to Haerin, because somehow, sitting besides her just feels right, even if the both of you haven't come to terms yet with one another.
Haerin feels her body tense at the scent coming from you; she was always weak for pretty girls who smell good. God, the universe is starting to curse her, this has to be karma, right?
The cat-eyed female doesn't know if it's because of the way your hair is beautifully styled in waves; kind of similar to Minji's hair, or if it's because your eye makeup seems to accentuate your already natural features or if it could be the cute elf ears added to you for the concept. Something about you makes Haerin have a weird burning and itchy sensation in the back of her throat and it pisses her off.
"I am excited." You can't help but to feel grateful for how welcoming everyone, well mostly, are to you. "You all have been so welcoming, it feels like I've been here since day one, thank you all."
The Wasian female giggles, screaming as she squeezes your cheeks. "AHH, Y/N, you are SOO CUTE!"
"After we do solo shoots and group shots, we'll be in pairs." Minji announces, taking the piece of paper she was handed earlier in the morning from her coat pocket.
Her eyes read the pairs, a small little smirk is tugging on her lips. "Hanni and Jihye are paired up, Y/N and Haerin are paired up, and Hyeinnie and I are paired up."
The Aussie line sighs, relieved that they're partners but upset at how Haerin manages to be SO lucky to get paired up with you.
Haerin cannot help but to feel sort of smug and nervous irritated knowing that she's yet paired up with you again.
Tumblr media
Everyone watches you as you pose in the water, holding a white rose in your mouth as you look over at the camera with a specific look in your eyes.
"She's a natural.." Minji couldn't take her eyes off of you and at how you being in front of the camera looks like such an every day thing to you.
Haerin understands now. She understands why SM kept casting you; you do have that star quality in you, you were born to be an idol. She gets it.
Just how much did Min Hee Jin went through lengths to snatch you from the basements of SM.
"You two are definitely going to kill this couple shoot." Danielle encourages her best friend, with a small 'fighting' symbol made with her fist. "I'm positive you two will lead one another well during the shoots."
Couple shoot?
"Good! Y/N-shi, each photo is coming out very well!" The photographer praises you, making you feel red about it which earns an orchestra of 'awes' from your members.
Even Haerin couldn't help but to let out a small smile at it.
Wait, what? Did Haerin just smile at you?
Why does the smile from her face makes you feel even more shy?
"She's all red from the water but somehow it makes the shots look even better." The director says to his assistant, who agrees with a fast nod. "Fans will love her, for sure."
Is he right? Would 'Bunnies' love you?
"Okay Y/N-shi, you're all set!" The upperman in the industry says with a proud smile, looking at you like you're his own daughter. "After Danielle-shi and Hanni-shi, we'll get your shoots with Haerin-shi."
Haerin feels her breath hitch at the thought of doing a couple shoot with you.
"Haerin-ah, go over to the dressing room with the stylists to get prepared." Minji places her hand on the feline female, indicating her to follow the two hair and makeup stylists. "Y/N will be with you shortly."
The younger nods with a half-smile, peering over to where the stylists wait for you and her. She gives another smile to the oldest member before walking off to the pretty unnies, hehe.
"Thank you! You've all worked hard." You bow to the staff and director, getting out of the water as you quickly scurry over to where your members were standing.
"Y/N! You did so good out there, oh my god!" Hanni wraps a towel around you to stop you from shivering.
Minji agrees, nodding continuously with a pretty smile. "You were really pretty, Y/N."
"You really know how to set a mood for the pictures." Danielle can't help but to compliment you, making sure her eyes meet yours.
Hyein jumps up and tackles you. "Unnie, you did amazing!"
"Hyeinnie, you're going to get wet!" You warn the girl with concern, but ultimately, you still hugged her back.
"Haerin already went over with her stylists to the dressing room to start getting ready for the pairing shoot." Minji informs you. "Just follow with your stylists and you'll meet with Haerin."
You hold the towel around your shoulders, nodding at the oldest's words. "Thank you, Minji unnie."
The leader widens her eyes again at 'unnie', but she manages to calm herself down, ignoring the way her ears are burning up. "Of course, Y/N."
The youngest snorts at the oldest, earning a small smack on the back from Minji. "OW!"

Tumblr media
you and haerin always had something special between the both of you.
you two met in middle school, when your homeroom teacher was assigning seats. she was a quiet kid, and so were you, but one of you had to get over it. so when the class was given a paired activity to "get-to-know each other", you were forced to come out of your shell, and haerin welcomed you (surprisingly) warmly.
it started off as a strictly-seatmate type of friendship, where you two would only interact whenever it was needed. but as you spent more and more time working on assigned activities together, you were beginning to realize that maybe you enjoyed her company more than you thought, and so did she.
eventually, you two began spending time together outside of class; during recess, lunchtime, sometimes after class in the library. it didn't take long until the both of you became really close, a known tandem. you were her closest friend, she was yours, and everyone knew that.
over time, your friends became hers as well, and so whenever everyone was free, your little friend group composed of minji, hanni, danielle, haerin, hyein, and you, would hang out together. at a clubroom, the courtyard, the gymnasium, a cafe, the cafeteria, anywhere.
but no matter how many close friends surrounded you two, it seemed clear to anyone that you were closer to each other than anyone else. the same way hanni was to hyein, and minji was to danielle.
now your feelings for haerin grew a couple years later, and you only admitted them to yourself in your sophomore year of high school. that's about four years or so since you two met, and about a year ago from today.
from the beginning, you had always found haerin pretty. it wasn't hard to admit. she was nice to look at, and the way her cat-like eyes turned into crescent moons whenever she smiled ear to ear... yeah, you knew you were enjoying it a little too much.
and it only worsened the more you got to know each other, because you found out there were so many things to adore.
the way she wouldn't stop talking about frogs, her love for tomatoes, her eyes and the way she blinks slowly when she looks at something she loves (a cat-like habit you picked up when she was watching a recipe video for an avocado dish).
the list could go on and on if no one stopped you, and after talking about it to your mom (who was very supportive of everything, by the way), you came to the conclusion that you liked haerin, in a "more-than-a-friend way".
but you had no idea, not a single clue, on what to do with that realization. what would happen if you told her? if you didn't? would she feel the same? would she be disgusted if she didn't?
crushes and romance was one of the most untouched conversation topics between the two of you, so you had no idea if she was even open to such ideas.
but the one thing you knew for sure, was that she was your best friend, and you were hers. you loved your best friend, and so did she. in a different way, or not, you felt like she still deserved to know. you hated hiding things from her, and history proves it only made things worse whenever you did.
so you decided to confess. great!
and suddenly you see her acting all lovey dovey with danielle.
well, in retrospect, they weren’t exactly being lovey dovey, and you kind of knew that.
danielle was just big on affection, as she was to everyone, and is one of the few people whose pda was complied with (or tolerated) by haerin.
and despite not being much of a pda fan, in that moment, you badly wanted to be in danielle’s place, comfortably smothering your best friend with all the love in the world.
oh, and it didn’t help that people started a couple rumors about them being a couple.
sure, everyone knew you were each other’s number one, each other’s best of best friend, but the way you two showed affection with each other was very different from the way danielle does, to again, everyone, but you didn’t care about that.
the bitter sting in your stomach seeing the two of them made you realize that it was probably a much better idea to just get rid of your feelings (you’re an idiot, you’ve had them for years. they won’t just go away). after all you didn’t want to ruin what you had with two of your closest friends.
and with that goal in mind, so began your plan to avoid kang haerin at all costs!
you’re really stupid.
in the process of avoiding haerin, you indirectly were avoiding the rest of the girls too. you mostly hung out with your other classmates from different subjects like woonhak and eunchae. and whenever you were asked about it by hanni (mostly), you shrugged it off and said it was just “school things you needed help with”.
it was a dumb excuse. everyone knew you were at least top 5 of the class. and what kind of help were you getting if you were going out to places like arcades and karaoke spots anyways?
the girls were bothered, but not as much as haerin was. she was often visibly in a sour mood, ate half of her usual cafeteria servings, and would talk a lot less than she already did.
they were worried for the both of you simultaneously, but hyein and minji put two and two together, which only doubled their worry.
initially, it was just you and haerin's separate well-being they were concerned about, but now that they realized the time frame in which you began distancing yourself matched up with when haerin's mood went down, they were now also worried about what could've happened between you two.
so they took it amongst themselves to at least know what was going on.
"haerin-ah."
"haerin."
"kang."
"kang haerin!"
haerin looked up from her untouched tray of food, her chopsticks poking around slices of beef in sauce.
"hm?"
minji sat across her as the first two to arrive in their usual lunch table.
"i was asking if anything happened between you and y/n or something..."
"oh..."
haerin looked back down and continued playing around with her food before sighing and looking back up, muttering a couple words.
"wish i knew."
"y/n-unnie! is something up between you and haerin-unnie?"
"huh? what?" you were sat in the sound proofed booth of the music room, guitar plugged in an amplifier. you squinted at hyein's figure from outside the room, putting your guitar on its stand and motioning her to come inside.
"can you repeat that? i can't really hear anything from in there..." scratching the back of your neck, you gave hyein a seat from behind the booth's drum sets.
"i was asking!" hyein took a deep breath, you raised your eyebrows signaling her to continue. "if you and haerin-unnie have something going on."
"h-huh? what? what something?"
"no not like that! i meant you know, did you fight or... 'cause she's been so sour lately! she wouldn't even give me her leftover tomatoes... she wasn't even gonna eat them! like at all!"
the expression on your face shifted to what most would identify as worry and concern.
"...she hasn't been eating the tomatoes? she loves those..."
"yeah! and so much more! anyways, minji-unnie and i deduced it was about you, so here i am." hyein gleamed with pride while you chuckled in amusement.
you leaned over to mess with the top of her head and sighed, "i'll talk to her. you don't worry about a thing, okay?"
and you kept your word to the younger girl. how could you not?
you spotted haerin alone in one of the clubrooms, cleaning up some of the materials they used for the day. knocking on the room's door startled her a bit, given by the minor flinch, but she relaxed seeing it was you.
still, you could tell her facial expression was slightly guarded, and it hurt you, but you definitely deserved it.
she turned back around to continue organizing the materials into three separate boxes, not saying a word.
"hyein said you haven't been eating the tomatoes in your lunch." you slowly took your steps towards her and stopped when you were a couole steps away on the other side of the desk she used to arrange the items. "or your lunch at all..."
she paused to look up at you and give you a short glare, before walking to move a box to the teacher's desk in the room. you followed a few steps behind her, arms behind your back as your fingers fiddled with each other.
"you shouldn't... skip your meals, you know..." you muttered, clearly intimidated by haerin’s cold facade. "health... you need to eat..."
seeing as how you still had no reply, you decided it was probably best to just go straight to the point.
"hey... i'm sorry..."
you were used to haerin not saying that much, especially when you got to know her more and she explained that it was simply just too tiring. but you were also always the exception to that.
whenever it was just the two of you, one would be surprised to see haerin as the louder one. talkative, always rambling about something, while you smiled, nodded, and gave comments whenever necessary.
"yangi, please say something"
haerin loved that nickname more than anything. it was pretty foul to pull that card, actually. you came up with it when you two were having a friendly debate over what animal she resembled.
"i don't know where you're getting cat, y/n."
"are you crazy? how are you getting frog!"
"literally everything!"
"no. you're simply incorrect. you're literally a cat in human form!"
"absolutely not!"
"whatever you say, goyangi."
"what did you just call me?"
"go-yang-i. goyangi. go. yangi."
"you're so... annoying."
"okay, yangi."
she let out a frustrated sigh, looking up at you with what felt like her eyes piercing through your soul.
"so you get to disappear on me without a word, but i have to reply when you speak to me for the first time in 8 days?"
yes, she's been counting the days.
but wouldn't you be too if she did the same?
well, you probably would've confronted her a little sooner. but it's not that haerin didn't care enough to do something about it, she just genuinely didn't want to overstep space you might've been needing.
"thats what i thought." she let go of the box, turned her back, and walked back to the desks to grab the 2nd box.
"look... i'm sorry, i really am." you immediately caught up to her with a few steps, eyes pleading with nothing but guilt.
"if you are then can you at least tell me why you were avoiding me?"
she stared at you, observing how your thumbs rubbed over your fingers, or how your breathing got a little heavy, both nervous habits she picked up.
noting how you probably weren't going to say much anytime soon, she let go of the 2nd box to face you.
"you're my best friend, y/n"
that hurt didn't it?
a reminder that that was probably all you were going to be to her.
"do you know how..." haerin took a deep inhale, it was beginning to get shaky. her mind was a mess, thinking of the best words to express the hurt you made her feel over the past few days. but she couldn't.
"nevermind."
knowing the way haerin acted added on to your internal conflict. haerin usually wasn't afraid to speak her mind when it was just the two of you, but now she is. she couldn't. and you knew it was your fault.
but were you really ready to tell her you liked her? now? you wanted to show her you were sorry, but it really wasn't that easy.
if things go wrong, she could continue the game and avoid you forever. and just like that you'd lose your best friend, ruining the group's dynamics as well.
but you figured your brain was just making up excuses for you to not tell her out of fear. what mattered the most now was letting her know you were sorry, and that hurting her was never part of the plan.
"look, i'll tell you, because i really truly am sorry for hurting you," you start off, hands in the air motioning whatever. "but i-... i need you to promise me..."
"what?" her voice was much softer now. still cold, but not sharp enough to make it feel like you were stabbed every time she spoke.
"that you won't be... weirded out, or disgusted, or leave the room. you'll talk about it with me."
"you're the one whos been avoiding the talking y/n, i hope you know that."
you often forget how quick she was with her words. it was like a whip. painful, fast, happens before you even noticed it did. you were just so used to her nicer side. she's never been frustrated with you.
"right..."
you took a deep breath, mentally composing a script of how you felt and how you were going to say it. just like the million times you've practiced to the mirror at home.
"i've been avoiding you 'cause i think i like you. or, well, i know i like you. in a more than a friend way. and i have been for a while, and i was going to tell you because i didn't like hiding things from you, but i saw you with dani one day and i just- i don't know. okay? it's stupid. i know she's like that with everyone, but i didn't like it when she was with you, so i decided that i'd rather just get rid of how i felt to make it easier and to not ruin any of our friendships. so i figured the only way to do that was if i didn't talk to you. clearly that affected us both in a way i didn't want or intend. i'm sorry i ignored you. it was selfish of me to not think about how you could've felt throughout everything."
haerin took a minute just standing there, trying to process the hell of a bomb of information you just dropped on her. her cheeks were gradually growing red the more she realized what you were trying to tell her.
"hey... hello... did you hear what i was saying... or do i have to repeat it... because i'd really rather not..." you waved your palm in front of the girl who seemed to be frozen in place. "but if that's what it takes then i guess tha—"
you stopped talking as haerin slowly approached you, wrapping her arms around your waist and burying her face on your shoulder. she was careful to do so slowly, giving you a chance to move away if you needed to. she knows you're not into physical touch, and it just wasn't exactly the norm for the two of you.
"i was worried."
"hey, i've been eating fine. it's you tha-"
"no, not that. i was worried you might've overheard dani and i talk about you when i told her i like you, and that you were disgusted by it and didn't want to be... associated with me because of it. and maybe you just didn't know how to tell me so you went with the silent treatment.... i was going nuts, y/n. that's why hyein was talking about skipping lunch and whatever. all i could think about was why."
you could feel the guilt eating you up bit by bit on the inside. it quite literally broke your heart to hear haerin, the girl with not a lot of words, express the effect of what you did. it was like acid, burning up your stomach, your chest, your head. except that acid was guilt.
"oh god... i'm so sorry, yangi... the whole thing was a really selfish move and— and i should've thought about you first. i really am so so sorry..."
you held her closer and softly shifted your body weight from one foot to the other, swaying the two of you softly, somewhat like a cradle calming a baby down to sleep.
"hey... it's okay... i know you didn't mean it. i'm just glad we're fine now."
you two stay in that position for a couple of minutes, feeling each other relax over time as a result of finally resolving the conflict you had caused.
that was until haerin broke the silence.
"so... hate to be the person to ask but..."
"what are we?"
the two of you laughed for a while at how the question was so cliche and cringe yet necessary.
"yes."
"bff premium?"
"y/n!"
"i'm kidding! i'm kidding! but... i say we take things slow? get a little used to this, whatever it is, whatever it could be?"
"yeah, i like that."
the two of you smiled at each other with nothing but warmth and care, before ultimately pulling in for another hug.
"minji-unnie you owe me 2,000 won."
"hyein you're being too loud."
"huh do you hea-?..." haerin pulled away with a surprised face, interrupted by y/n quickly stomping towards the door, slamming it open to reveal minji and hyein falling forward to the floor. a result of relying on the door for support.
"seriously? i expected hyein, but minji-unnie?" you sighed in disappointment, haerin walking over to see what the fuss was all about.
"listen, it's for hanni she placed bets too."
"...lame excuse."

Haerin smiled brightly as she finished decorating the cake in front of her. It's your birthday and like every other year since you met, Haerin and her friends would never let this date go unnoticed, you deserved at least a cake.
"Perfect." she murmured happily and gained the attention of Danielle, who was taking other decorations out of the bag.
“That looks cute.” Danielle held back a laugh at Haerin's clumsy decoration.
“Do you think she’ll like it?”
“She loves anything you touch.” the girl took the objects out of the bag again.
That was completely true, since your friendship, you always praised everything your friends did, but you always had special attention for the feline girl, because she was the one who caught your attention, no one could do anything like she did.
You left with Minji and Hyein, which gave Hanni, Dani and Haerin enough time to put together a mini party for you before you came back. It was the same thing as always, Dani chose the decorations and decorated it together with Hanni, who in addition to helping Dani also cooked the cake, the cake that Haerin always put together and decorated in a different way every year, so you arrived, pretended to be surprised and said thank you everyone for doing something like that for you, always saying that they didn't need it. It was the best birthday routine you could ask for.
You laughed as Minji fought with Hyein once again.
“We can’t take that one too, just pick one.”
“But they’re both good.”
“But we can’t take both.”
"Why not?" Minji massaged her temples while the youngest laughed in amusement.
“Why don’t you choose one and we’ll buy another one the next day?” You approached and caressed the girl's back, Minji silently thanked you for freeing her from stress.
“What if there’s no more here?”
“Hide it.” you gained a bright smile as the girl hid the plush on her arm as deep as possible on one of the shelves.
“Okay, let’s pay then.”
“Thank you Unnies, you are the best.”
“Am I the one who will pay?”
“Y/n-unnie gave me a smarter idea.” you watched the older girl roll her eyes while Hyein just had fun with it.
In the apartment, the three girls discussed (just Dani and Hanni actually) how they should decorate the wall.
“Star curtain!”
"No! Of tapes.”
“Let’s stick together.”
“Not these kind of tapes.”
“Then use the right word!” Haerin watched everything as she opened one of the bags, seeing that curtain of light pink hearts, the same one she used to decorate the entrance to the terrace on the day she asked you to be her girlfriend, she smiled and took it out.
“This one looks perfect.” the two girls looked at her.
“Yes, definitely better than tapes.” Danielle got a slap from Hanni.
You walked next to Hyein as she showed you all the cute objects she found, it was your birthday but obviously Hyein was going to get more gifts than you.
“This one is so cute.” She showed you a blue pen with some drawings of clouds on it, you motioned for her to put it in the shopping basket.
“Hyein! We should buy things for Y/n! It’s her birthday.”
“Don’t worry about it Unnie, I’m happy as long as you’re happy.”
“That was so sweet, Unnie.” Hyein hugged you and sheltered Minji to join, both of them squeezing you.
“Let me breathe.”
Haerin put the last candle on the cake and took a photo, she was confused whether to send it to you or not, since you obviously knew they would be throwing a party for you, after all, going out to “distract your mind” with Hyein and Minji wasn't the best of things.
“More to the right.” Hanni watched closely as Danielle adjusted the number-shaped balloon on the wall. “Now you were a lot.”
“Decide!”
She didn't send it, seeing your reaction in person would be much better anyway.
“Let me go! I want to see that one!”
“Every store you went into just to “see” you bought at least two things.” Minji checked her phone, you already knew what she was checking.
“You are so boring.”
“Hyein!”
"Sorry." Minji laughed at how sorry she looked after you scolded the girl.
You called Haerin, Minji, and Hyein arguing about something in the background as you tapped your foot impatiently until you heard the girl on the other end of the line.
“Y/n?”
“Rin!”
“Why did you call me? Did something happen?”
“I just wanted to know how you are.”
“I… Ahm… Well…” you heard Hanni’s voice in the background.
“Did something happen?”
“Dani and Hanni are arguing about the position of the balloon.” she whispered.
“It looks interesting.”
“You would love it.” you smiled and watched Minji hold Hyein again, as the girl tried to enter the store.
“I think I have to hang up, I’ll see you in an hour?”
“Okay, stay safe, I love you.”
"I love you."
Haerin, Hanni and Danielle looked at the decorated wall and table, there were confetti in several places because Hanni accidentally popped a balloon and it ended up becoming part of the decoration, there were your favorite sweets spread across the table in something that Dani called a “concept”, in fact she just didn't know a way to organize them, but Haerin knew you would like it and that made the three girls feel proud of the work they did.
“We’re good at that.”
“It was years of practice.”
“The first year was really bad.”
You waited anxiously until Minji finally said that you guys should leave, of course Hyein wanted to continue seeing the stores and some food stalls, but you also agreed with Minji and that made the girl have no choice but to go with you two. Minji and Hyein bought you some things (Hyein bought more things for herself claiming that “it’s a necessity”) and you made a mental note to put them on your shelf when they got to the apartment.
When the three of you entered the elevator you became impatient and fought the urge to stamp your foot on the floor, maybe the top floor wasn't the best idea.
You turned the key in the door and slowly opened it until you finally heard a bang and the rain of confetti with the 5 girls shouting “surprise”, you already knew this was going to happen, but you couldn't hold back your smile.
“Wow, you guys are excited.” you walked in and felt Danielle hug you tight.
“It’s your birthday, we have to be excited.” You broke away from the girl's tight hug and looked at the decoration, you immediately recognized the curtain of hearts and smiled when you remembered.
-(
“Did you do all this?” Haerin smiled as she sat in the chair across from you.
“Yes, is it bad?”
"No no! It’s beautiful…” you watched her look around “But why all this?”
“I wanted it to be something special.”
"That's it…"
"Strange? Shameful?"
"No! It’s cute, you worked hard for this, that’s why I like you.”
"Serious?" She nodded and looked back at you, you took a deep breath and reached for the box in your coat pocket “I… shit, I think I should have prepared myself.” she laughed.
“Okay…” she placed a hand on yours and you felt a little less nervous, you knew the answer she would give, but at least you wanted to give a good speech.
“Haerin… I really fell in love with you the moment I saw you and I've never seen anyone other than you since, this might be weird because we've been friends for so long, but I want you to know that it was you and it will always be you, so I want to make you happy from now on in the right way, so… will you be my girlfriend?”
"Yes, yes, yes!" You smiled at the sparkle in her eyes, you opened the box and took the ring, then placed it on her finger.
Happiness has never left your life since this day.
)-
"Did you like it?" Haerin walked over and held your hand, the gentle squeeze warmed your heart.
“It turned out great.”
"Thanks." Hanni turned around.
"Hey! Me and Dani did it!” You laughed.
“You guys did it great.”
"Thanks." the girl smiled, her sudden change in mood made you and Haerin hold back a laugh, when she walked away you looked at the girl who was already looking at you.
“I have a gift.” she pulled you to the couch and grabbed a bag from the coffee table.
“One more?”
When you rented the apartment, Haerin visited you more often until you finally asked her to live with you, on all your birthdays, Haerin was always at your house in the morning giving you the first gift and hug of the day, that is if it became another routine that only showed the love the girl feels for you even more.
This year the gift was a collector's edition book that you had wanted for a long time, which almost brought you to tears after seeing the author's signature.
“This one is different, it’s for our collection.” You watched as she opened the bag and a small box, opening it and showing it to you with a small smile.
“This is cute, is it for the family?”
“Yes, it’s me and you”
"Us?"
“Yes, you are the rabbit and I am the cat.”
“Are we married?”
“We’re engaged.”
“We should make this come true.”
“ARE YOU GUYS GOING TO GET MARRIED?”
“HYEIN!” you pushed the girl away and laughter filled the room once again, you looked at Haerin, who was now a little shy because Hyein had heard the conversation, you ran your finger on her cheek before pulling her closer and give her a soft kiss on the lips.
“We should have kids too.”
“Are you going to get Hae-unnie pregnant?” You pushed Hyein again and watched the girl fall dramatically and beg for Dani's help, saying how aggressive you were.
You looked at Haerin for a few seconds before finally concluding.
I must start planning the proposal.

Listen to ♡ Paranoia by Kang Daniel
Tumblr media
“It’s not like you guys could outrun me anyway.” You poke at your boyfriends, “I’m a bunny. Don’t they outrun dogs all the time?”
Mingi growls lowly, “Watch your tongue, cottontail.”
“Wanna test that theory, bun?” Yunho adds.
A shiver runs down your spine. Yunho’s eyes are dark as he stares at you. Something in the air has shifted. His typically smooth pine scent sharpens, and the undertones of dark chocolate become more present. Even though your eyes are fixated on Yunho, you can still smell Mingi. Your nose twitches as Yunho’s scent mingles with Mingi’s spruce and winter air scent. You glance at the hallway and debate your best course of action. Either you could stay here like a bunny trapped in the corner by big scary wolves, or you could find a hole, bolt down the hall, and make a game out of it.
The second option seems far more appealing. You turn your small upright ears to the side, listening to where Mingi is on your left. He isn’t moving, but you know his eyes are fixed on you. Yunho is directly in front of you, and he’s not budging any time soon. The space just to your right is wide open. If you move at the right time, you could easily make it down the hall and into your bedroom. Yunho’s eyes shift to Mingi for a moment. That’s the opportunity you needed. You bolt. You make it about halfway down the hall before you find yourself thrown over Yunho’s shoulder. In hindsight, you should’ve known better. Both your mates are dog hybrids, hunting dog hybrids at that. Mingi walks up to where you and Yunho stand in the hallway. One moment, your eyes are on the ground, Yunho’s fluffy dark brown tail also in your field of view. The next, you see Mingi. His finger is under your chin, making you look at him. He’s bent over slightly so as not to strain your neck too much.
“You wanted to play chase so bad. Let’s see how well our pretty little prey can handle the consequences.” He hums, a smirk playing on his lips.
“Again, I can outlast both of you. We all know bunnies last far longer than any dog can in bed.”
Yunho tugs your tail, making you squeak, “Let’s see if you’re still saying that when you’re hanging off our knots.”
Mingi finally moves his hand from under your chin and steps around Yunho to walk ahead of both of you into the bedroom. His spruce scent follows him in a waft of air. It makes your head spin with need. Your own scent must’ve sweetened because Yunho’s fingertips dig into the flesh of your thigh before following the other dog hybrid into your bedroom. You don’t even get a moment to process what’s happening before Yunho is throwing you onto your bed and quite literally ripping your clothes off your body. Mingi pulls you into his lap, his fluffy white and grey ears poking up out of his blonde and red messy hair. Your bare pussy against his joggers feels like both heaven and hell at the same time. You immediately start to grind against him. A low growl from him stops your motions. Instantly, you bare your neck to him, ears pinned back against your head.
“That’s a good little bunny. Listen to your alpha.” He smirks.
“M-mingi, please?” You whine.
“Please, what?” He teases, teeth gently grazing against your mating gland.
You whimper at the feeling of his sharp canines against the sensitive skin, “Need you inside me so bad.”
Your fluffy tail wiggles a bit in anticipation. Just as you think Mingi is going to sink his teeth into you. Your other mate, who has been relatively quiet since ripping your clothing off, pulls you from his lap. You’re sitting back against Yunho’s bare body. You can feel his hard member pressed against your back just beside your tail. Yunho lifts your body as if you weigh nothing and guides you to sit down on his cock. A loud moan escapes your lips as he starts to move you to bounce on his cock.
“That’s a good little bunny. So good for your alphas, aren’t you?”
You nod, “Feels so good!”
Yunho chuckles against the shell of your ear, “And to think, you were talking so big about how a little prey hybrid like you could outrun and out fuck us. You’re leaking slick, bun. You’re such a fucking mess.”
“Yun– alpha! Fuck!” You moan loudly.
Mingi stalks closer to you and smirks, his sharp, pearly white canines on display as he does so. He drops his head in front of your chest before sucking one of your nipples into his mouth. You squirm and whimper at the feeling of Yunho fucking you, combined with Mingi’s tongue swirling around the hard bud. His hand moves to stimulate your other nipple. You can’t help but bury your hands in his messy, dual-colored hair. The moment you do, he uses his free hand to grasp your wrist in one hand. You’re rendered completely helpless. Yunho’s knot starting to bump against your leaking entrance makes your mind completely blank.
“You gonna cum on Yunho’s cock, cottontail?” Mingi teases, his sharp teeth teasingly nipping at your nipple.
“Feels so–” You cut yourself off in a broken moan.
“So what, bun? You already that fucked out that you can’t explain yourself?” Yunho teases further.
You can’t hold back your orgasm anymore. Your body shakes, and your pussy convulses. As you ride out your high, Yunho pushes his knot into you. The feeling of him finally popping it in sends you into a second, much more unexpected orgasm. You feel tears start to roll down your cheeks at the intense feeling. Mingi’s teeth still tease your nipples as you come down from your high. Although Mingi didn’t get to knot you at the same time as Yunho, the cum on both his thighs and yours is evidence enough that he came at some point during your back-to-back orgasms. Mingi finally moves away from your sensitive chest and places kisses against your mating gland. You positively melt at the feeling. A moment later, Mingi’s lips are gone from your neck, and although you can’t see it, you can still hear him kissing. He kisses Yunho’s mating gland as well, and the other alpha growls at him half playfully. The sound of the growl has you whimpering and grinding against his knot.
“You’re fucking insatiable, bun. Is our pretty little prey hybrid desperate still?” Yunho tsks.
“Please?”
“Maybe I should give attention to that cute little clit of yours while you’re stuck on Yunho’s knot.” Mingi suggests a condescending hint to his tone.
You clench around Yunho’s cock.
“I think our little cottontail likes that idea.”
“I really really do.” You admit.
Mingi smirks, “I best get to work then.”

Of course, peace was never an option.
You were rudely jolted awake by the sound of a door slamming—again. Your body jerked so violently that you nearly fell off your bed, barely catching yourself on the edge. The thumping in your chest was a mix of lingering exhaustion and sheer irritation. You had almost landed yourself a third visit to the doctor, which was something you wished to avoid after what happened the before.
“What the hell do you want?" you snarled, sitting up with a scowl, blinking against the dim light of the room.
Leaning casually in the doorway was the same infuriating man from earlier. He wore his usual cocky smirk, the kind that made you want to throw something sharp or heavy at him. “Several things, sweetheart, but I’m afraid you won’t like some of the answers," he drawled, his eyes looking you up and down with amusement.
You threw him a scandalised look, crossing your arms over your chest. "Don’t call me that," you snapped, glaring daggers at him. Your attitude only seemed to amuse him more as he chuckled.
“Alright, alright," he raised his hands in mock surrender, still grinning like a stupid cat. "I’ll tell you the real reason I’m here. The captain needs you again—something about getting us out of here. He said we’re through the darkest parts of the cave, and the light’s slowly coming back.”
You groggily glanced at your wristwatch, confirming that about two hours had passed since you’d last checked. If the captain was right, you were nearly through the treacherous part of the cave and would soon be back in open waters. The thought gave you just the slightest bit of relief.
“Take me to him. We have much to discuss,” you said, standing up and brushing the sleep from your eyes.
“Mmm, much to discuss, huh?” he teased, a sly look on his face.
You rolled your eyes, exasperated. “It’s navigation stuff, don’t make it sound like that! And who even are you to question it? Don’t you have a job to do?”
A mischievous glint lit his eyes. “Ah, of course. You don’t know me yet.” He straightened up dramatically, as if preparing for an introduction on stage. “Jung Wooyoung, lookout extraordinaire and your new favourite person. Pleased to meet you." He extended a hand to you.
You scoffed, swatting his hand away. "Favorite? In your dreams, Wooyoung."
Unfazed, he continued, “Also, I do have a job, but right now there’s absolutely nothing to look out for in this cave, so I decided to come here and annoy you.”
You groaned, rolling your eyes yet again as he grinned wider. "Great," you muttered sarcastically, already regretting your decision to ask him anything. Now that you knew his name, though, you were definitely adding him to your nightly list of people to curse.
As you both walked toward the main deck, you noticed something off about Wooyoung. In the dim, flickering light of the corridor, his presence seemed… shadowy, almost as if he wasn’t fully there. You kept glancing at him out of the corner of your eye, but it was hard to tell if it was just the darkness playing tricks on you.
He stayed silent for once, which was even more disturbing than his usual cheeky remarks. Occasionally, he whistled quietly under his breath, but the quiet of the cave made the sound echo strangely around you.
Finally, you reached the deck, and there was Captain Hongjoong—still wearing his damn sunglasses even though darkness enveloped the entire cave. He stood completely still, even with the rocking of the ship, his hands clasped behind his back as he gazed out toward the dimly glowing exit of the cave.
You stepped up beside him, unsure whether to interrupt his thoughts. “Captain,” you finally mumbled.
He turned slightly, just enough to glance at you from behind his sunglasses. “You’ve rested,” he stated more than asked.
“Not really,” you replied, loosening up a little, “but I hear we’re almost through. I’ve come to discuss our next course of action.”
“Good,” Hongjoong replied, nodding. “We’re almost at the exit, and I want you to confirm our path as soon as we’re out of the cave. I’ll not have any more surprises. Not today.”
You glanced back at the looming cave walls, the jagged rocks jutting out as the ship slowly stirred forward. If you had estimated correctly, you’d make it through soon—hopefully without the ship scraping against the sharp edges.
“Once we’re in open waters again, we’ll head for the eastern port towns. But after we dock, there’s another matter I need you to assist with, something a little different than what your job entails” Hongjoong said plainly.
“What matter?” you asked warily.
He waved you off, “All in good time, navigator. For now, let’s focus on getting through.”
Before you could question him further, he turned away, dismissing you. Typical. The man was near impossible to read, always playing out his cards carefully.
With a sigh, you nodded and made your way toward the main deck, tired of all the cryptic talk. Beside you, Wooyoung offered a lazy grin, his earlier silence breaking. You had almost forgotten he was there, almost. "So, what do you think? Captain’s got another fun surprise lined up for us?"
"Probably something that might get us killed or worse," you muttered, shaking your head.
"Wouldn’t be a normal day without it," he chuckled.
You stared at him in shock. "Wait, what? This kind of stuff happens every day!?"
He tipped his head back. "Every. Single. Day. You’ve not seen the worst of it yet" he said, cackling as he sauntered away, leaving you standing there, mouth agape.
Before you could even process what he'd said, a gentle but rough hand came out of nowhere and closed your mouth for you. Startled, you whipped around, hair flying out and smacking the person behind you, who groaned in response.
"Ow, that hurt," the deep voice groaned. It was that tall beefy man with the baby face, the one with the figet dagger. You hadn’t really seen him in a while, and now, here he was, standing right behind you.
"Why are you here?" you asked, narrowing your eyes.
"Captain sent me to train you," he said matter-of-factly.
Your brow furrowed. "Train me for what?"
He just smirked and without another word, grabbed your hand and began dragging you toward the lower deck. You stumbled along behind him, still lethargic and bewildered. Light had just started filtering in as the ship neared the end of the cave, casting long shadows across the wooden floorboards.
When you finally came to a stop near one of the secluded corners of the main deck, it was in front of a large, leather-bound case, big enough to hold a person. You eyed it dubiously. "Are you trying to lock me up or something?"
He just gave you a big smile, showing off his teeth, offering no answer as he bent down and popped open the case. The lid creaked loudly, revealing an array of weapons—swords, daggers, even a few guns.
Your stomach dropped. "Wait—are you going to kill me? Captain Hongjoong said I was useful!" you shrieked, taking a step back.
The man laughed, his deep voice rumbling through the air. "Relax. I'm just teaching you some basic combat skills so you can defend yourself when we dock."
You blinked, incredulous. "What do you mean 'defend myself'? How dangerous can the people there be?"
He straightened up, closing the case for now, and turned to you with an amused smile. "Well, they’re not that dangerous, but captain's orders are captain's orders. Gotta do what I gotta do."
You groaned, realizing there was no way you were getting out of this. Maybe you should fake sickness. “And you’re the one teaching me? My head hasn’t even healed completely yet!” you argued, pouting angrily.
The man chuckled. He sure found this all amusing, “You’re safe for now, relax. My name is Mingi, by the way”
You rolled your eyes. “Alright, Mingi. Let’s get this over with.”
He clapped his hands together, eyes gleaming with enthusiasm. "That’s the spirit! Now, let’s start with something easy."
He pulled out a lightweight dagger and handed it to you, guiding your hand to grip it properly. As he began explaining how to hold and wield the weapon, you could feel the absolute absurdity of your situation. Just a day ago, you were quietly navigating maps and casually dodging storm flashes, and now you had to learn how to stab people—for your own protection, apparently.
Mingi’s voice pulled you out of your thoughts. "Focus, or you might hurt yourself, before someone else can even try to" he said, his tone reprimanding but gentle. You nodded, trying to focus on his instructions.
As he moved behind you, adjusting your stance and positioning your hands, you realised that despite his intimidating size, Mingi wasn’t nearly as unnerving as you first thought. He was patient, explaining everything in detail and offering tips as you clumsily practised a few basic moves.
“Not bad,” Mingi said after a while, stepping back to observe your progress. “For a beginner, you’ve got decent instincts.”
Your ego swelled ever so slightly, at his words, though you were far from being a pro. “Thanks, I guess,” you said, slightly out of breath.
“Alright then, we’ll wrap it up for now. Captain doesn’t need you killing anyone yet,” he said with a wink, sheathing his own blade with ease.
You handed the dagger back to him, relieved to be done. “Well, that was… fun?”
Mingi just laughed again, leading you back toward the centre of the main deck. “You’ll thank me later. Trust me.”
The open sea was finally visible ahead, you had just passed the exit. Hongjoong still stood at the helm, a satisfied smile on his face, happy to be out of the claustrophobic cave.
You glanced at Mingi, who gave you a nod before heading off to god knows where. You took a deep breath, feeling both exhausted and relieved.
As you made your way back towards Captain Hongjoong, you spotted Seonghwa standing beside him, still as a statue. His sharp, delicate features made him look almost princely, if it weren’t for his hollowed cheeks and the dark circles under his eyes. You couldn’t help but wonder if they fed him enough—or, for that matter, if anyone on this ship had eaten at all. With everything that had happened, food had completely slipped your mind.
Reaching Hongjoong, you tapped him lightly on the shoulder. He turned to face you, his body language telling you he’s exhausted despite him trying not to show it al all.
“Hey, since we’re past the cave’s exit,” you said, quickly moving to the more important matters. “From here, we need to travel westward for about three hours, then head north once we pass the last island on the peninsula. It’ll take us approximately another day to reach the eastern ports.”
He nodded, looking less burdened as you spoke. “I see. Good work,” he said, pausing for a second efore continuing, “We need to discuss your role when we dock. We’re not exactly welcome there, if you catch my drift.” His lips managed to curl into a small smirk. “But there’s a man who’s willing to host us while we take care of some… business.”
“Is that the man you mentioned earlier?” you asked, curiosity piqued.
“No, it’s my—"
Before he could finish his sentence, your stomach growled loudly, cutting him off. Your eyes widened in mortification as you slapped a hand over your mouth, cheeks burning red with embarrassment. You hadn’t realized how hungry you actually were until this moment.
Hongjoong stared at you for a beat, and then, to your surprise, he burst into laughter. “You haven’t eaten in a while, have you?” he asked between breaths, his usual stoicism gone.
You shook your head, mumbling a quick “no” as you tried to disappear into the floor from sheer embarrassment.
“That’s okay,” he said, still chuckling. “You should head to the kitchens. We’ll discuss the plan when everyone’s together.” He turned to Seonghwa, who remained as still and composed as ever. “Seonghwa, show her the way. Make sure she doesn’t get lost—and for God’s sake, make sure you eat something, too.”
Seonghwa nodded, the corners of his lips twitching. He caught your gaze, and with a subtle gesture, indicated that you should follow him. Your face still burning, you gave Hongjoong a quick, flustered nod. “Thank you, Captain. Sorry ‘bout that,” you muttered before quickly following after Seonghwa.
Hongjoong waved you off, still chuckling. “Don’t worry about it. Get some food.”
As you walked through the dimly lit corridors with Seonghwa, the ship gently swayed in time with the waves, and you could still feel your cheeks burning from embarrassment. Seonghwa, of course, said nothing, his footsteps light and quiet as he led the way.
After a few minutes of walking in silence, you mustered up enough courage to speak. “So… do you actually eat?” you asked, chuckling awkwardly.
Seonghwa glanced at you out of the corner of his eye, his expression impassive. “On occasion,” he replied dryly.
You snorted, relieved that he had a sense of humor, however subtle. “Well, it didn’t seem like it. You look like you haven’t slept or eaten in days.”
He raised an eyebrow but didn’t reply, leading you down another set of stairs toward what appeared to be the ship’s galley. “There you go,” Seonghwa said, gesturing toward the entryway of the kitchen and dining hall. “Wooyoung should be around here somewhere. He usually handles the meals.”
Your eyes widened at the mention of Wooyoung. “Oh, interesting. Thanks, Seonghwa.”
Seonghwa gave a short nod. “I’ll make sure to eat something too, later” he added, a hint of teasing in his tone before turning to leave.
“Wait—where are you going?” you asked, feeling a bit more comfortable around him now.
“To report back to the captain,” he replied, “and to rest. Unlike you, I haven’t gotten a break yet.”
You felt a bit guilty for holding him up, but you smiled weakly at his dry sense of humor anyway. “Alright, see you later.”
With that, Seonghwa disappeared into the shadows once again, leaving you to explore the galley in search of Wooyoung—and most importantly, food. You wandered further down the corridor, and soon, the delicious scent of something cooking hit your nose sharply. You nearly started drooling right there and then. The aroma was rich and savoury, with the perfect combination of spices, and it drew you in like a moth to a flame.
You groaned at the prospect of a filling meal. You followed the scent with your nose up in the air, your feet moving almost on autopilot as the hunger gnawed at your stomach. Soon enough, you found yourself standing in the large kitchen and dining area, which made sense considering there were about thirty crewmen aboard—not including the eight others. The kitchen was bustling, but what really caught your attention was Wooyoung, standing at the stove, cooking himself.
You weren’t entirely sure of what you had expected, but it definitely wasn’t this. When Seonghwa said Wooyoung handled the meals, you thought he meant something more along the lines of rationing supplies or managing food storage. Seeing him actually cooking made you slightly sceptical. The mischievous pirate who had spent most of his time getting under your skin was now handling sharp knives and hot pans—what could possibly go wrong?
Curiosity piqued, you walked closer, hovering around him until he noticed you, peeking over his shoulder as he tossed some spicy fried rice in a pan. Beside him, a separate dish sat covered on another stove, its contents a mystery for now. A few other crew members were busying themselves farther away, likely preparing more food for the rest of the ship.
“What are you doing?” Wooyoung asked, his focus still on the rice as he expertly tossed it in the pan.
“Oh, nothing… nothing,” you lied, stepping closer. “Just, you know, looking.”
He glanced at you out of the corner of his eye, smirking. “I didn’t know you could cook,” you said, surprised. “You don’t seem the type.”
“Is it really that surprising?” he whispered, turning his head slightly to catch your gaze. Amusement danced in his eyes as he added, “It makes me more attractive, don’t you think?” He shot you a quick wink.
A fiery blush rose to your cheeks at his words, your heart doing flips. Now that he mentioned it, you had to admit—Wooyoung did look rather appealing when he wasn’t actively trying to irritate you. His sleeves were rolled up, exposing the veins in his forearms, and the deft, precise way he handled the pan showcased a kind of skill that was hard not to admire.
“Shut up,” you muttered, your embarrassment growing. “How is that even relevant?”
Wooyoung’s laughter filled the kitchen, sounding more like a monkey than human. You scowled at him, crossing your arms in defiance.
“Besides,” you added offhandedly, trying to regain some composure, “how do I even know if it’s any good? I haven’t even tried any yet. You don’t have to be so overconfident.”
At that, Wooyoung’s playful expression fell away, replaced by a dead-serious look. His pride, especially when it came to his cooking, was not something to be trifled with.
“Sit,” he ordered, pointing toward a nearby table. “I’ll bring you some, and then you can give me your fair judgement.”
Sensing the sudden shift in his mood, you quickly obliged, taking a seat at the table. Maybe doubting Wooyoung’s culinary skills wasn’t the best idea. He disappeared briefly, then returned with two plates piled high with food. The steam rising from the dishes carried the tantalising aroma of spices and roasted meat, and your stomach grumbled in anticipation.
Wooyoung placed the plate in front of you, along with a set of cutlery, and stood back with his arms crossed, watching you intently. The spread before you was impressive: spicy fried rice, seasoned roasted potatoes, and fried chicken coated in a vibrant red sauce. Everything looked perfectly cooked, and the rich, savoury aroma made you feel heaven.
You hesitated for a moment, feeling the weight of Wooyoung’s expectant gaze. Then, slowly, you picked up your fork and took a bite of the rice and chicken. The moment the flavours hit your tongue, your eyes widened in disbelief. It wasn’t just good—it was abso-fucking-lutely divine. The heat from the spices was perfectly balanced with the richness of the sauce, and the fried rice had a satisfying crunch to it that elevated the entire dish.
You closed your eyes, savouring the taste as a pleased sigh escaped your lips. When you opened them again, Wooyoung was staring at you with a smug grin on his face.
“Well?” he asked, his tone dripping with self-satisfaction.
You couldn’t deny it. “This is amazing,” you admitted, shaking your head in disbelief. “I didn’t think anyone could cook this well on a ship.”
Wooyoung’s grin widened. “I told you I’m good, didn’t I?”
You rolled your eyes, but there was no hiding the smile that tugged at your lips. “Fine, you win this one. But don’t let it get to your head.”
He gave you a mock bow, clearly enjoying his little victory. “Too late.”
As you continued to eat, Wooyoung sat down across from you, digging into his own plate with the same enthusiasm. For a few moments, there was a comfortable silence as you both focused on the meal.
"So," he said after a while, "what do you think? Does it make me more attractive?"
You nearly choked on your rice, glaring at him as you swallowed. "You just had to ruin the moment, didn't you?"
His laugh once again filled your ears. How annoying you thought, smiling to yourself.
As you finished eating, more crewmen began to file into the dining hall, grabbing their own plates and piling on food. The atmosphere grew more lively, but you were already feeling sleepy, especially after the amazing food. After all, it had been a long couple of days.
You picked up your plate and made your way to the sink, leaving the dish with the growing pile of dirty ones. You felt a smidge of guilt for whoever had to wash them all, it wouldn’t be an easy task. As you turned to head back, you spotted Wooyoung also cleaning up his area, still looking refreshed and energetic despite the long day.
"Has the captain told you anything about what we're supposed to do when we dock?" you asked him, maybe he would have some answers.
Wooyoung shrugged, drying his hands on a towel. "He just said we’re meeting in the map room tonight. Only us, the others, and him. We’re not supposed to talk about it until the rest of the crew's out of earshot."
You raised an eyebrow. "Why all the secrecy? They're part of the crew, too."
A sly smile curled on his lips. “You’ve been with us for a few days now, but you’ll learn soon enough—not all crewmen can be trusted. There are always ears where you least expect them.” He winked before turning back to supervise the kitchen.
With a slight nod, you said your goodbyes to Wooyoung and left the kitchen, heading back to your room. His words stuck with you, though. What were they so cautious about? And why the distrust among their own crew? It felt odd, and your instincts kept raising red flags at whatever it was they had planned to do.
Once in your room, you shut the door and sat at the small desk by the window. It was the first quiet moment you’d had to yourself in days, and your mind began to churn with thoughts and questions. You reached for the loose paper you had been given, scribbling down whatever came to mind.
The first thing you had considered, when you’d first been taken aboard, was the idea of escaping, you had thought of nothing else. But now, after spending time with the crew, especially Hongjoong and the others, you knew better. These pirates weren’t ordinary men—they were highly skilled in what they did, and escaping was definitely out the window. You sighed, accepting that, for now, it was better to stay put and go along with whatever they asked of you than to waste energy on an escape plan that had no chance of success.
The second thing that nagged at you was their reputation. You had heard rumours about this crew before—they were renowned for doing certain unspeakable things, but so far, you hadn’t witnessed anything that aligned with those stories. In fact, they had been surprisingly kind to you, even if some of them, like Wooyoung, enjoyed teasing you, constantly. Despite all that, doubt lingered in the back of your mind. You had only been with them for three days, and for all you knew, they were just waiting for the right moment to take off their masks. You couldn’t shake the feeling that your usefulness to them had a limit—and when that limit was reached, what would they do with you?
Third, and perhaps most pressing, was the matter of what they intended to do when they docked. You didn’t know much, but from what Hongjoong had said, it was clear they weren’t exactly welcome in the town. What had they done to be so unwelcome? And what was the nature of the business they had to take care of? You couldn’t help but wonder if it involved something illegal—something you could easily get caught up in, and potentially ruin all progress you had made in life.
As you stared at the half-finished notes on the paper, and one random flower drawing, your thoughts spiralled further. There was a lot you didn’t know, and the more you learned about these pirates, the more questions seemed to pile up.
You were so lost in your thoughts that you didn’t even notice how much time had passed. The sun had again been replaced by the moon high in the sky, its glow filtering through the small window of your cabin. Outside, the ship bustled with activity as the crew prepared to speed up the pace and retire for the night, now that they were out of the more precarious part of the waters.
You zoned out, meanwhile a cat had wandered into your room through the open door, its sleek body hopping onto your bed and making itself comfortable. It stretched out lazily, giving you a sideways glance before deciding it wasn't getting enough attention. With a graceful leap, it hopped up onto your desk, startling you out of your daydream. You blinked at the feline, and it blinked back at you, then let out a loud, insistent meow, demanding your attention.
Your hand slipped from where you had been propping up your head, and you stared at the cat in mild surprise. It was a beautiful Siamese with big, curious eyes that studied you closely before padding closer. It hopped down onto your lap, rubbing itself against you and purring softly. You couldn't help but laugh, the restlessness that had been building in your chest easing as you patted the cat’s soft fur.
"Where did you come from?" you murmured, scratching behind its ears as it leaned into your touch.
A few minutes later, a voice called out from the doorway. "There you are!"
You looked up to see a man standing there, his broad figure filling the doorway. He let out a sigh of relief upon seeing the cat, his expression softening as he stepped into the room. "I was looking everywhere for you. You can't just run off like that, you know?"
The cat, hearing its owner, perked up immediately and jumped out of your lap, sauntering back over to him. He scooped her up in his arms, and she looked impossibly tiny against his large frame. He nuzzled her affectionately before looking up at you with a smile that deepened the dimples in his cheeks.
"She doesn’t usually go up to strangers this easily," he said, clearly amused. "I think she likes you."
You couldn’t help but giggle at the thought. "Well, I like her too. She’s adorable."
You stood up and walked over to him, reaching out to stroke the cat’s fur again as she wiggled happily in his arms. "What’s her name?"
"This little one? Her name’s Byeol," he replied, his voice filled with affection as he looked down at her. "She’s my little star."
"That’s a perfect name for her," you mused, still petting Byeol. "But what about you? What’s your name? I asked you yesterday too, but you never answered."
The man’s smile grew wider, his dimples drawing you attention even more as his eyes turned into little crescents. "I’m Choi San!" he said with enthusiasm, his voice carrying a warmth that made you smile in return.
"Nice to finally make your acquaintance, Choi San," you said, watching him closely. It was hard to reconcile the image in front of you—this man with his soft smile, cradling a tiny cat—with all the tall tales you had heard about the pirates. He seemed so gentle, so full of joy. You couldn't help but wonder how someone like him could be a man who allegedly killed without remorse.
San noticed your thoughtful expression and tilted his head slightly, his smile never wavering. "What’s on your mind?" he asked.
You hesitated for a moment, unsure of how to phrase your thoughts. "I guess... I just didn’t expect someone like you to be, well... a cat dad," you admitted, hoping your words didn’t come off as offensive.
San chuckled, the sound deep and rich. "Things aren't always what they seem, right?"
You nodded slowly, feeling a strange sense of calm in his presence. "Yeah, I guess not."
"Oh, by the way," San added with a playful grin, "the captain told me to come look for you. Said we have things to discuss."
"Ugh, finally," you groaned. "The fact that he dragged this out for so long has been eating away at my soul."
San laughed, the sound warm and so different from Wooyoung’s. Wait a minute why were you suddenly thinking of him, you were taken aback at your brain playing tricks like this. San beckoned you to follow him, and with Byeol nestled comfortably in his arms, you both made your way to the map room. The corridors of the ship were quieter now, the hustle of earlier fading as the rest of the crew settled into their rooms.
As you entered the map room, most of the others had already gathered. There was one unfamiliar face in the group, a man you hadn't seen since your first encounter with the crew. He sat in a corner, arms crossed and eyes distant, clearly uninterested in anything or anyone in the room. You wondered briefly who he was but decided not to question it.
You pulled up a chair and sat down, glancing at San, who was still holding Byeol. He gently released the cat from his arms, letting her roam freely around the room. Byeol wasted no time in greeting the others, nuzzling up to each of them, her little purrs filling the room.
From across the table, your eyes met Yeosang’s. He gave you a small wave, his smile as sweet and boyish as ever. You felt your cheeks flush with heat, and you waved back shyly. He chuckled softly at your reaction, his gaze lingering on you for a moment longer before turning back to Mingi beside him and continuing their conversation.
Just then, the door creaked open, and Captain Hongjoong strode in, his sheer presence silencing the room. As always, Seonghwa trailed close behind him, quietly locking the door after them.
"Alright," Hongjoong began, taking his place at the head of the table, his sunglasses perched on top of his head, stormy eyes looking at each face intensely. We’ve got a lot to cover, and not much time to do it."
You leaned forward slightly, eager to know what this urgent meeting was for. You still didn’t fully understand the task at hand, but the way Hongjoong and the others talked about it, it must be something very important.
"As I’m sure most of you are aware," Hongjoong continued, glancing around the room, "we’re heading into hostile territory. The port we’re docking at isn’t exactly a friendly place for us, or any pirate for that matter, but we have a contact there who’s willing to help us— you’ve all met him before, although our brand new navigator might come off as a surprise for him,”
He paused, letting his words settle over the room before continuing. “This heist might be our most important one yet, and we absolutely cannot afford any mistakes.”
His gaze shifted toward you, locking eyes in a way that made you want to run away. You felt a wave of anxiety wash over you—you were inexperienced, a liability among a group of seasoned pirates who had honed their skills over years of dangerous work. Sure, you could navigate and read maps, but when came the questions of combat and risky missions? You were out of your depth.
For a brief moment, you started spiraling into self-doubt, your mind racing with questions about your usefulness. What if you messed up? What if you put everyone in danger?
But Hongjoong’s voice broke through your anxious thoughts. “But this time,” he said, eyes gleaming with a spark of a plan, “we have someone who’d be great for going undercover. Our faces are already known, but I doubt anyone has seen our navigator before.” His words were pointed but not unkind. “Even if they have, they probably wouldn’t remember.”
Well, ouch, you thought to yourself, feeling a bit slighted by the implication. But before you could dwell on it, Hongjoong pressed on.
“Our target runs a popular saloon and inn uptown, which, of course, is funded by his illegal auction houses operating behind the government's back. Now I wouldn’t have cared about a lousy businessman like him at all but unfortunately, his activities have started to affect our business as well,” he said, his tone turning sharp. You didn’t even want to know what he meant by their business. “His lawyer is who we need. He holds all the evidence we require to shut that fat pig down once and for all.”
The room was silent, as if each of the men were absorbing what Hongjoong was saying. You could see the intensity in their faces as they nodded in understanding.
“We’ll reach the port by noon tomorrow, and our work begins immediately. We shall leave the town as soon as we’ve completed the mission,” Hongjoong continued. “Pack light and only the essentials. The ship will be docked elsewhere to avoid drawing attention to our presence. Questions?”
You hesitated for a moment, then raised your hand timidly. “Umm… what exactly do I have to do?”
Hongjoong’s eyes flickered back to you, his expression softening slightly. “I’m getting to that,” he replied. “Once we’ve reached our accommodation, the first to depart will be our navigator…”
He trailed off, his face going blank for a moment as if he’d just remembered something important. “Wait… I never asked for your name.
The room fell into an awkward silence as Hongjoong’s flustered expression mirrored the confusion in the room. You blinked in surprise. Hongjoong had just come to the realisation that after nearly four days of you being on this ship, none of them had ever confirmed who you were. What if they’d picked up the wrong person?
“Oh… right,” you stammered, feeling your face heat up. “My name’s Aurora.”
Hongjoong nodded, casting a quick glance toward Seonghwa, who hadn’t shown a single flicker of emotion since the meeting began. It was like they were communicating with their eyes.
“Whoa, I can’t believe we forgot that!” Wooyoung exclaimed, slapping his hand to his forehead in disbelief, earning a few deflated murmurs in agreement from the others. Even San was shaking his head, feeling a little disappointed that they had missed such an important detail.
Hongjoong shook his head, visibly trying to shake off his little glitch before returning to business. “Anyway, Aurora will be the first to move,” he explained, focusing back on the task. “Your job is simple: go up to the saloon building and introduce yourself as a collector of rare navigation instruments. I assume that won’t be too hard for you?”
You nodded quickly, trying to ignore the nerves building in your stomach. “I can do it,” you said, your voice louder than you expected.
Hongjoong gave you a curt nod, his eyes briefly meeting yours as if searching for a hint of doubt. He shifted slightly, and pursed his lips in thought. "You’ll reserve a room for two," he continued, "and during your conversations, ask the host for places where you can buy such instruments. Make it clear you’re looking for something underground since a collector like yourself would prefer to avoid the rare items acquisition tax. Slip him a few bills, and he’ll be more than happy to point you towards the auction house."
You took note of his instructions, feeling a little excited at the thought of going undercover. It was the first time you had done something like this, maybe it won’t be as life threatening as it sounded.
Hongjoong took a deep breath before continuing. "San will accompany you," he said, glancing toward the man, "since he’s the only other face that people around here don’t know much of."
You looked at San, who met your gaze and gave you a playful wink. His presence, there with you, was a little reassuring, in a way—having someone you were comfortable with might help ease the tension.
"After you’ve found out the location of the auction house," Hongjoong said, his tone darkening, "this is where the difficult part begins. From what my sources tell me, the lawyer lives in a permanently reserved room in the saloon building. He operates from there, running the auction house's legal affairs. As night falls, you two will need to find him and make sure he doesn’t go anywhere—quietly." His eyes shifted between you and San.
You swallowed nervously. "What happens once we have him?" you asked, your voice an unintended whisper.
"Once we have him with no alarms raised, the job becomes a little easier," Hongjoong replied. His eyes glinted, a smirk playing on his lips. "He has a liability we can exploit, something that’ll make our interrogation a lot smoother. We’ll use it to extract what we need."
You nodded, though there was something dark in his words. This lawyer wasn’t exactly innocent, you knew that, but you couldn’t help feeling some pity for him. Whatever Hongjoong had planned, it wasn’t going to be pretty.
"As for the others," Hongjoong continued, turning to the rest of the crew, "Wooyoung and Yeosang will tail the man during the day. Keep track of his movements and note where he goes. Jongho, take Yunho and Mingi to restock the ship’s supplies while you’re in port."
The crew nodded in understanding, their expressions set in determination. Hongjoong’s grin widened, clearly pleased with how things were falling into place.
"We’ll reconvene at night to move the lawyer from the inn to our accommodation. I’ll have a room ready for him." He held a cheshire grin on his face, and you shuddered at the thought of what might await the poor man.
“Once we have the evidence, we can anonymously turn it over to the authorities and get what we need in return. All clear?"
A chorus of "Yes, Captain" and "Aye, Captain" echoed in the room, the crew eager to carry out their roles.
"Good," Hongjoong said, satisfied. "You’re all dismissed until we dock." He paused, glancing in your direction. "Mingi, I need you to continue training Aurora in defense. San, you’ll be teaching her hand-to-hand combat as well."
"Sure, Captain," Mingi replied, turning to you with a friendly smile. "Take good rest, Ms. Navigator. We have a long day ahead of us tomorrow."
You returned his smile, feeling a mixture of exhaustion and anticipation. As everyone dispersed, you couldn’t help but feel the weight of what was to come—the danger, the deception, and the responsibility that had unexpectedly fallen onto your shoulders.
San caught your eye one last time, giving you a nod as if to say, You’ve got this.
And even though you weren’t entirely sure if you have it, you nodded back, determined to see it through.
However, as you left the meeting and wandered back toward your room, exhaustion hit you like a wave. You were so ready to sleep again—you had barely gotten any proper rest, this job was much more demanding and taxing than the usual small ones you took up on for merchants.
You missed your parents. A pang of longing shot through you as you thought about them, wondering when, or if, you’d ever see them again. It had been years since they were sent on their own assignment, and there had been no word from them since. You missed being a whole family—you missed bickering with your younger brother, it must be around the time for his final examinations. You hoped he was doing well with his and not causing the school trouble as he often did.
As you wandered back to your room you let yourself be consumed by the overwhelming thoughts, all the deep emotions you had put away, tears fell from your eyes, marking dark spots on your shirt and leaving your vision blurry. You held on the handle of the door of your room, grip tightening as you found it difficult to open it and face loneliness again.
However terrible these pirates were, they lived life as it was intended and they were so carefree while you were just existing for now. The splotches on your shirt grew, you let out a bitter laugh wondering why your mood shifted so suddenly. Little whimpers and sobs escape your lips, then you felt warmth after the coldness of the tears.
Just as your grip on the door handle tightened, a pair of warm, calloused hands cupped your face, gently swiping away the tears. Startled, you blinked up through your blurry vision and found yourself face to face with a concerned Yunho. His gaze held a desperation to comfort you, something that felt of place on a supposedly ruthless pirate.
“What’s wrong?” he whispered.
Snapping out of it, you pulled your face away, taking your hand off the door handle, wiping at your eyes, rubbing them red. Yunho moved his hands trying to get yours away from your face before you could hurt yourself. You sniffled trying to calm yourself and put on a weak smile, “It’s nothing, just feeling a little overwhelmed…. that’s all,” your words did not convince Yunho.
He wasn’t good with people, you couldn’t pick them apart like machine to understand how they worked. You had to be careful and sensitive. Yunho didn’t like the way your face showed nothing but pain. He signed not knowing how to reply, “Can i show you a place, i think you’ll like it right now,” he looked at his feet, his hands fiddling with the edge of his shirt, “going there helps me too,”
You hesitated, the idea of being this vulnerable in front of a pirate didn’t please you, but you agreed nonetheless, "Okay," you whispered. "I trust you."
Yunho lightened up a little at your words, and he gently took your hand, leading you up toward the poop deck. You followed him around the mizzen mast until he stopped in front of a trapdoor. Without saying much, Yunho unlatched the trapdoor, you don’t know how, since it had seemed to be sealed shut with metal but you didn’t think much of it. He jumped down first, holding out his arms to help you down.
The passage was narrow and dimly lit, with small fixtures glowing faintly. Yunho’s head nearly touched the low ceiling, and the space felt tight. He closed the trapdoor behind you with a small whizz, and you continued down the corridor until he stopped in front of an unseemly wooden door.
"I’ve only shown this to the other guys," Yunho explained quietly. "But now, you too. No one else knows about this. It’s special to me." He glanced at you before continuing, "We’re right under your room and the captain’s. No one can hear me down here, but I can hear everything."
He opened the door, and the creak echoed through the small space. You hesitated for a second before stepping inside. At first, it was pitch black. You could hear soft clicks and whirrs, and then, all of a sudden, there was a sliver of moonlight creeping in from above. The light grew, revealing an open room, one wall slowly rising to reveal the vast, open sea.
The stars sparkled over the water, the moon casting a glow across the room. The sounds stopped, you felt yunho walk around the room, and all of a sudden there was a burst of light in the room, much more intense than the moonlight, you looked around there were no torches no fixtures just an open room with one wall lined with shelves upon shelves of books, a mattress big enough to fit ten people, folded up towards the other wall and then of course the newly revealed balcony.
"How is it?" Yunho asked softly, his eyes watching your reaction.
"It’s so... wow," you breathed, your earlier worries momentarily forgotten. "This is amazing."
Yunho chuckled softly, walking toward the folded mattress and sitting down, patting the space next to him. "I designed this all by myself. It was my first real project when I got a hold over my abilities," he said, pride lacing his voice.
You smiled and walked over to join him. Sitting down on the mattress, you let the calming sounds of the ocean fill the silence. For the first time in days, you felt a sense of peace. Although that was not all, Yunho seemed to have one more surprise in store for you. He stood up and walked over to the bookshelf, flicking a switch you hadn’t noticed before.
Suddenly, the ground beneath you began to shift. The balcony extended outward, nearly doubling the space of the room. You gasped in awe as the floor moved, the motion smooth but stopping with a gentle jolt. The room now opened even further toward the endless ocean, giving you an unobstructed view of the night sky, its stars shimmering more vividly than ever.
Yunho returned, settling down beside you on the large mattress again. “Lie down,” he said softly, putting his arms behind his head as a makeshift pillow.
You hesitated for a second before lying back and copying him, your gaze immediately drawn to the open sky. The stars twinkled like diamonds scattered across the dark canvas, the crescent moon glowing softly in the distance. You took a deep breath, feeling the cool night breeze brush against your skin, carrying with it the smell of the sea.
You turned your head slightly, your eyes catching Yunho’s. His eyes twinkled like the stars too, he had a contented smile on his face, you smiled too and turned back enjoying the calm. Time felt like it had stopped.
The sound of the waves gently lapping against the ship, the light breeze, and the soft hum of the world around you, gave you suck comfort. You didn’t know when it happened, but eventually, you drifted off to dreamless sleep, the stars overhead keeping you company.

A Nine-Tailed-Fox bead can live in a human for ONLY one year and after a year is up it will break inside the human who holds it. muse? pt. 5
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing: kang haerin x fem newjeans!reader
summary: getting a new member way long after debut and before a comeback isn't really the best idea to haerin
category: enemies-to-lovers (?), kpop idol au
genre: slow burn, angst, and fluff
warnings: a bit frustrating and A LOT of jealousy
a/n: i appreciate all the love muse has gotten so far! tysm everyone :)
Tumblr media
It has been a week of you being a member of NewJeans.
All of you finally finished with the concept photoshoots for the comeback along with the re-designing of the albums and completing new photo-cards as well.
While the days are hectic with everything, you feel happy with the newfound idea of being on a team. A team where the members are very inviting and warming to you. Well...all except for that grouchy roommate of yours.
You recall only exchanging a single word to her, especially after that accidental kiss. To your surprise, Haerin kind of seems like she opened up to you. (JUST A TEENY TINY BIT!) However, you don't pay much attention to her.
Practice today was going smoother than expected, especially because of the fact that no one has been in this room since that day you messed up. Everyone was so occupied with the concept shots and re-recording everything that no one had time to practice.
Much to Haerin's surprise, she might have to admit that you're actually not as bad as you made yourself seem. Of course, Haerin believes you still joining the team is a 'setting NewJeans up for failure' thing but she gives some sort of props to you, she guesses.
However, looking at the reflection of you through the practice room's mirrors and seeing the look of determination in your eyes, the feline-like female understands why SM was so determined to cast you. The way your eyes speaks for itself, it looks quite too good for a 4th generation idol.
"Alright! We'll take a quick half an hour break before countering Cool With You." The dance instructor informs the girls before turning over to you. "Impressed at how fast you're keeping up, great job, Y/N!"
Your eyes lit up, a smile that is so perfect for your face appears on your pretty pink lips. "Thank you, unnie."
Haerin bores her eyes a little too much, lingering on your features. Her lips are parted in concentration at the way you simply move; bowing at the instructor and letting out another smile before brushing your hand through your hair. She was going to stare a bit harder too but she notices the youngest with a teasing smirk on her face from her peripheral view.
Immediately, her pupils pull away from you and lock to the ground in hopes of Hyein not catching onto anything. She hopes that she wasn't too obvious of staring at you.
"I'll be back." The instructor leaves the practice room, the door shutting behind her.
Everyone started doing their own thing the second the door shut. Minji and Hanni are bickering again over some issue while stretching their arms. Hyein makes her way to her bag to grab a quick snack to avoid passing out while Danielle leaves the room to get her water bottle refilled.
Haerin picks up her phone from the couch, resting leisurely on the soft cushion to interact with 'Bunnies'. However, she takes a quick sneaky glance over at you. You stare at your reflection in the mirrors of the room, she doesn't look past the discontented expression of yours.
Something in the cat-eyed female feels her own heart feeling quite bitter at the way you look unpleased at your own self. And she wants to reach out to you and ask if you're alright; however, Haerin doesn't want to be distract herself with anything at this critical moment right now.
No one else seemed to ask if she was alright with adding you to the lineup last minute, so why should she ask if you're okay?
Is that so wrong of her?
"Is everything alright?" Minji walks over to you, concern painting over her eyes as she look at you.
Haerin bites down on her jaw, wondering why Minji couldn't have continued arguing with Hanni. She looks down at her phone, not caring anymore.
"I'm just worried." You tried to smile it off, however, being the oldest, Minji knows something is bothering you.
What could it be?
"Are you not feeling well?" The oldest brings the back of hand to your forehead, her eyes are down-turnt as her eyes worryingly fixed at you.
Looking at Minji, you feel your heart warming up from having a considerate leader of the team. Something you never experienced at your previous company. You feel happy for once.
Minji breath hitches at the eye contact from you. The way your eyes seem to shine a bit brighter, even in the dark room has the older nervous. She feels her ears going red and her mind is flooded by the sounds of her heartbeat that wants to jump out of her chest.
"I'm fine, unnie." You laugh a bit to lighten up the sudden concern from her. "I guess I'm just worried the fans won't like the change. I'm not too sure really."
Haerin doesn't care, yet, her eyes aren't on her phone like she wanted to. Instead, they're glancing over at you and Minji through the mirror of the room. Why does she seem to care so much about Minji touching you? Why does she care about who you talk to?
Most of all, why does Haerin want to talk to you more?
"Y/N-shi, you're a really beautiful person. Inside and out. From my eyes, you're so hardworking and you deserve to be on this team. After all, you were specially picked." The oldest gently smiles as she lightly boops your nose (she couldn't help it.)
Minji pulls out a lollipop from the pockets of her sweatpants, handing it to you with a soft adoring look in her eyes. You let out a small giggle, taking the piece of candy from her.
Haerin's eyes glower down at the physical touch, letting out a quiet scoff as she rips her eyes away from the sight. A sour taste is forming in her mouth and she despises it. After all, she's unconcerned about you. Right?
"Scoot over." Hyein towers over the cat-eyed, her bag of chips in one hand while the other is constantly moving between the bag and her mouth.
Haerin stares at the younger with a stoic face.
"You're scooting or...?"
Letting out a grumble in frustration, the raven-haired girl puts her legs down and scoots towards the wall for Hyein to sit besides her.
"So, I saw you looking at Y/N unnie earlier."
Oh fuck.
Haerin knew Hyein was going to bring it up someday, just not now. Especially when you're literally a few meters away from them.
"No, I wasn't." Haerin lies, hoping and praying that Hyein will believe her.
The youngest stares at the cat-eyed, confused. "Hmm..yes you were."
"Why would I?" Getting a bit defensive now, Haerin puts her phone away as her mind scrambles to find more lies to get out of this investigation from the youngest of the group. "You know we don't get along so why would I look at her?"
Popping a chip into her mouth, Hyein shrugs. "Maybe cause you realize she's actually not bad and is really good at this."
"Like I said, I don't care about her." Haerin's voice is stern now, upset at what Hyein is trying to get out of her.
"You can lie to yourself but you cannot lie to me."
Whatever.
"Unnie, can you show me how you do that popping trick?" Hyein jumps up from the couch, rushing over to you.
You divert your eyes away from Minji and Hanni, paying attention to the youngest. In the process, you make eye contact with Haerin who only looks away while she rubs the back of her neck and letting out a cough afterwards.
"Of course!"
Oh, screw Hyein. She did that on purpose. For you to look over in this direction.
And screw Haerin's slight excitement at the way your eyes landed on her for the first time today.
Tumblr media
Finally exiting HYBE's building, everyone lets out noises of excitement. The night breeze feels very cooling across your face, especially after countless of practicing for Cool With You. You shut your eyes for a couple of seconds, reminiscing about the air of your hometown.
"Move, you're in the way." A voice causes you to immediately open your eyes, ruining your 'main character moment'.
Turning to the person besides you, you cross your arms with a scowl. "Let me get some fresh air."
"Well, you're in my way." Haerin retorts back, placing her hands in the pockets of her zip-up to fend for something. "And it's getting windy."
Rolling your eyes and letting out a small tsk at the other's words, you can only look at the view outside again. The night sky looks very calming today, with the streets all lit up ready for some people to have their nighttime adventure.
"The night is my favorite time of the day." You softly smile, looking at how the moon is glowing with a few stars. "It's so pretty."
Haerin can only stare at the view beside her, her eyes focuses on how your natural face seems to look pretty. She would admit that if there was a definition for beauty; you would be the first contender.
"I overheard you talking to Minji unnie earlier." She looks away, not wanting to look at your decently overwhelming eyes. "While I'm personally not a fan of you for joining the team, I think 'Bunnies' would like you."
You can't help but let out a gasp at the other's sudden words and kindness. Suddenly feeling a frenzy of a stomachache at what your teammate just said, you let out a small sigh.
"Why do you not like me joining the team, Haerin?"
The cat-eyed diverts her attention back to you at the way you called out her name.
That was the first time either of you acknowledged one another by name.
"I don't like changes, Y/N." She can only defend her reasoning, pulling out a lollipop and staring down at it. "Do you see this candy I just pulled out, it was never there but all of a sudden, it's in my pocket. That's the type of change I dislike."
What in the world is this girl talking about?
You furrow your brows, looking down at the strawberry-flavored candy in her hand.
"Here, you can have it." She hands it to you.
You don't even know whether you'd want to take it from her. "Hmm, keep it. Get used to the change, you'll like it soon."
"You think I will?" She responds back, her voice sounding cold yet unsure.
Letting out a small hum in response, you smile over at her. "It takes time, I understand."
Haerin and you stare at each other in silence.
"What are they doing out there?" Hanni squints her eyes from the car's window.
Hyein can only shake her head while she too stares at the view from the car. "Haerin is so stupid."
"I don't want them to get sick, omg." Minji stresses, head in her hands.
Ripping your eyes away from the sudden moment between you two, you cannot help but to let out an awkward laugh. Motioning with your hands at the van. "Let's go, I think the others are waiting for us."
Haerin nods at you.
"What are they doing over there?" Hanni squints, looking out from the window of the van.
Minji stresses, placing her head into her hands. "I don't want them to get sick omg."
"Oh they're coming!" Hyein sits up, moving her things away and placing them onto her lap. "I want to sit by Y/N unnie!"
Hanni disagrees, turning away at god speed from the front to look over at the youngest. "No way! It's my turn!"
"You've always sat next to her! My turn! Plus, you chose that front seat."
Danielle stares at the tantrums from both of them, thinking of a solution. "Let's make it simple and have her sit next to me for today."
"She's always welcome to sit next to me." The oldest proposes. "I can always move to the back."
Hanni purses her lips in an upset manner, lowering her eyes at the unofficial leader. "Bro, you're going to make a move on her."
"Bro? What?"
The Vietnamese crosses her arm, squinting her eyes at the one besides her. "You heard me."
"Sorry we took long out there." Haerin opens the door, scanning the van and is met with an unsure atmosphere. "What happened?"
The youngest lets out a laugh at how the oldest members are arguing over something small again. "Minji unnie and Hanni unnie were fighting over who Y/N sits next to."
"Me?" You peek your head in from the outside, earning a gasp from Danielle at how cute you just looked.
Haerin rolls her eyes at how Minji and Hanni just automatically assumes you're some sort of property once it comes to the seating arrangement in the van. After all, at the end of the day, they're all going to leave in the same way so why does it matter where and who Y/N sits.
"You two need to stop fighting over the same thing." Haerin can only mutter to the two OLDEST members acting like immature toddlers, stepping into the van to bee-line her way towards the back of the van where Danielle is sitting.
You let out a smile while scanning where to sit. Ultimately deciding to sit between Haerin and Hyein.
"Thanks a lot, you scared her." Minji mumbles with her teeth gritted at Hanni.
The female with the bangs scoff before pointing at herself. "Me? More like you."
"Whatever, Pham."
"Suck my toes, Kim."
Finally, with everyone seated, the manager takes off for the night to end.
Haerin can only let out another thousandth sigh at how they were acting. There's too many things going on in the world than to fight over sitting next to someone (like controlling the small excitement she felt when you chose to sit next to her).
As the ride is a bit bumpy, your thigh accidentally touches the cat-eyed female's thigh as well. Feeling shy all of sudden from the physical touch, you scoot a bit closer to Hyein. This leaves Haerin a bit confused and fazed at why you didn't want to sit next to her.
But whatever, right?
"Haha, unnie likes me more than you." Hyein sticks her tongue out at Haerin, who only stares back with a blank.
"That's not true, haha~" You say. "I just wanted to give her some room."
Tumblr media
Everyone sits near each other, huddled around the computer after the manager sent a file of all the concept photos for each album. Gasps and squeals at how each individual photo turned out while Minji scrolls through the photos.
"Hanni unnie looks so cute in these polaroids." Hyein compliments, looking at how tiny the older is.
The Vietnamese giggles, waving her hand off. "Oh stopp~"
Haerin has to admit, she liked that there was more water concept ones compared to the previous ones proposed earlier before you were added to the lineup.
"I loved the way your hair was done in these." You too compliment the Australian.
At the compliment coming from you, Hanni suddenly feels shy. Letting out a small and quiet "thank you" to you.
Minji whips her head to look over at her best friend with an unsure expression, confused as to why the Vietnamese is acting all "coquette".
"Oh! Look at Haerin's photos." Danielle proudly admires how her best friend is charming, she starts complimenting the hair, outfit, makeup and pose but stops once seeing the paired photos that Haerin took with you.
The feline-like furrows her brows at how the paired photos turned out. They look pleasing with the scenery of the tree and sun in the background. The simple picnic theme with both girls wearing light colors to balance one another.
Continuing to scroll, Minji pauses upon the photo where Haerin accidentally kisses your cheek.
"This looks so good! With the butterfly adding a touch to it." Hyein excitedly sits up, her eyes sending a teasing look over to Haerin.
"We do look cute here." You nod in agreement, trying to ignore the way your heart is beating and all of sudden you feel the need to grab a glass of water from how hot it is in the living room.
Hanni rolls her eyes, crossing her arms at the mere fact she wasn't paired up with you. "It's cute and all but Y/N and I would've been cuter."
"Too bad." Haerin replies, sticking her tongue out at the older. "Where's the one where I fixed her hair? She looked cute during it."
Cute?
You have a funny feeling at the way your cheeks are starting to warm up. "Let me go get a glass of water real quick."
You need to get out of being in the same room as her.
"OOO, this one looks super good." Minji hums, satisfied with the way these looks. Especially with the fact that you and Haerin don't get along but somehow, the photos make it look otherwise.
Haerin throws out a delighted smile at how your eyes looked in the picture taken. Admiring the view points of you, from your eyes to your lips. And maybe, just maybe Haerin can admit what Hanni and the others mean by you being real.
Meanwhile, you're pacing back and forth in the kitchen.
There's no way you feel nervous around your very mean roommate, right? RIGHT?
Yeah, it can't be.
Kang Haerin and her mean comments. Kang Haerin and her cute smile. Kang Haerin and her boba eyes. WAIT-...
This is bad...
