I have to show you the new lady because she's very special. She's a German doll, but she's dressed in a Swedish folk dress!
She's dressed in the Vingåker folk dress<3
I've crossed out her eyes because I understand that a doll having no eyes can be unsettling
Say hi to Nellie🩷 she also looks like a hedvig but I think i already have a hedvig doll somewhere?
She's a Kammer & Reinhardt doll, marked 377 ☆ 2! She's either from 1890s OR 1910s-1920s ... and little hard to say because different sources say different things
My mother helped fix her crack very nicely♡
I love her

Okay no longer on mobile. Prepare yourself for some beautiful boys.
1. Lord Clapham
An English wooden doll made c. 1690-1700, currently held by the V&A Museum. Besides the clothes and wig, he is physically identical to his wife, Lady Clapham. That’s a common theme among western antique dolls- since the female ones don’t usually have breasts, the only thing to gender them is clothing and hairstyle. Mattel’s Creatable World dolls aren’t as novel and groundbreaking as they think.
2. Male French fashion dolls
Note that I did say usually up there. This doll by DeHors was painted to be a man in particular, because Masculinity = Angry Eyebrows, I guess? He also has applied facial hair, probably in the same mohair as his wig
...that IS the same face mold as their lady dolls, though, and he’s probably on the same body.
These Hurets follow a more common pattern, where it’s just patently the same doll with a short wig and trousers. Is that doll a man? Is that doll a butch lesbian rocking the dapper look c. 1870? You decide!
And then share it publicly if you decide it’s the second one, because it’s always fun to watch the vocal minority of rabid conservative doll collectors have a conniption fit. (You’d think they’d have learned by now- antique dolls are an mlm/wlw solidarity zone.)
3. Male china dolls
Aw, he won a blue ribbon in 1991! Good job, little fellow!
Male china dolls are a bit more definitively gendered, because they have molded hair. However, while heads with short hair were usually used for boy dolls, they could sometimes be dressed as girls; in most periods of china doll popularity, it was acceptable for very little girls to have short hair. And as with French fashions, the bodies were pretty much identical most of the time.
4. The Kaiser Baby, but only as a Black doll
I’m not normally a baby doll fan, but this little guy by Kammer and Reinhardt has been so cute every time I’ve seen him. The sculpt looks nightmarish as a white doll and precious as a Black doll. I have no idea why. My doll friends see it, too, so I guess it’s a Thing.
5. GI Joe (kind of)
I don’t actually like GI Joe, to be clear. Totally uninteresting to me, plus the whole Die And Kill For America(TM) narrative. But whatever gets closer to breaking down the barriers around little boys playing with dolls is a tiny hint of progress on that axis. It used to be more socially accepted until the mid-20th century screwed things up, and I want all kids to be able to enjoy the fun, creativity, and social understanding that comes from playing with dolls.
And yes, GI Joe is a doll. He’s a doll, doll, doll. Die mad about it, Hasbro.
So there’s a selection of my favorite male dolls (except the last one). I won’t be rushing out ad buying them any time soon- not that I could, for most of the examples. But I certainly appreciate them!
(Again, except GI Joe. He’s there for conceptual reasons.)
Are there any male (or male-dressed, gender is bullshit) dolls you've admired?
I appreciate the artistry behind male dolls, but I’ve never had much interest in collecting them. I never even had Ken dolls as a kid; Barbie just seemed so much more exciting. But I can share some photos of male antique dolls when I’m not on mobile, if you like.
#dolls#male dolls#antique dolls#vintage dolls#military cw#no I'm not counting Ken. Ken is an accessory for Barbie. are the male French fashions also an accessory for lady dolls? possibly#but consider: they're beautiful#Ken is not beautiful by my arbitrary metric#so no Ken
