4. The Royal Convocation (The Selection)

By the time we got there, the street in front of the Province of Carolina Services Office was packed with women. Standing in line, I could see a number of girls from my neighborhood in front of me, waiting to go inside. The trail was nearly four people wide and wrapped halfway around the block. Every girl in the province was signing up. I didn’t know whether to feel terrified or relieved.

(…) I went through the line, signed at the window to confirm that everything on my form was true, and took my picture. I sat in the chair, flipped my hair once or twice to give it some life, and turned to face the photographer.I don’t think any girl in all of Illéa could have been smiling more than me.

“I don’t know why some girls go so over the top. Look at America. She’s so pretty. I’m so glad you didn’t go that route,” Mrs. Leger said.

“I’m nothing special. Who could pick me next to Kamber or Celia?” I winked at them, and they smiled. Mom did, too, but it was forced. She must have been debating staying in the line or forcing me to run home and change.

“Don’t be silly! Every time Aspen comes home from helping your brother, he always says the Singers inherited more than their fair share of talent and beauty,” Aspen’s mother said.

Literally everyone falls over themselves to tell America how pretty she is and by all accounts always have. This does not automatically equate to someone being comfortable with their appearance, but it does become grating when the book is just using it to tell us America is naturally beautiful but Unaware.

America going about her life blissfully unaware of her looks or under the impression she isn't pretty is one thing, but you can show a character isn't comfortable with how they look in much more subtle and realistic ways than this ham handed attempt to prove that America is Just Like You.

Or, for something completely different: I am aware that I am pretty. Many people have told me so throughout my life in comfortable and uncomfortable ways. That doesn't mean I am always comfortable with how I look or that I am not aware of the ways in which society holds I could be prettier. I am often insecure about how I look, but I am still aware that by most western standards I am 'pretty.' And even when I am fully secure about how I look, I worry about other things. Like my personality!

Part of the reason America feels so disingenuous when she says she's not pretty is genuinely that she has demonstrably grown up in an environment where everyone constantly tells her she's pretty. Whether she's comfortable with that or not is a different story.

But whether you value looks (as America so clearly does) or you do not, you're still aware of them. Most women are, because we're taught to be. When beauty is a currency, you usually know what you have in your wallet, especially since America is so hyper aware of everyone else's looks, and especially because it is all anyone talks about. This girl plays two instruments, sings, speaks three languages, cooks, and has apparently had a relatively comprehensive education. Her mother has mentioned this once, because it is entirely incidental: what is important to the book, to America, and to her love interests, is that she is pretty.

And by having this conversation repeatedly, the book makes sure we know it.

OMG I FINALLY DID IT! (You guys have no idea how long this took to upload and the number of times I recorded this but it was worth it!)
