I Can Be Your New Home (Jessie Fleming x Reader)
Warnings: None
A/N: how cute is this gif!! it’s a long long fic so settle in. based off this request:
Prompt: In which Jessie is homesick so during a training session, you make sure to do a bunch of little things to make her feel better.
You and Jessie had clicked instantly. You were bubbly, smiley and outgoing off the field, and on the field you took a new role. The one of the stone cold, rough and slightly reckless player. However Jessie was more reserved, quiet and introverted off the field, she really found herself on the field. Jessie had been with Chelsea for a month now. It was the middle of August and London was as rainy as always.
Jessie arrived to training at 9:20, as an on field training session would start at 10:00, while a recovery gym session would take place for an hour from 11:45-12:45. Most of the team was on the pitch, hiding from the rain under the sheltered benches. "Jesus. I was really hoping to have a sunny session today." Sam groaned, slouching down lower in her seat.
Jessie was looking around the field, searching for you. She did that every day, even though she knew you always came a little later than you should. Jessie’s hood was up and her hands were hidden under the long sleeves of her coat. "I bet you’re missing sunny California now, Jessie." Erin said.
Her comment was harmless, absolutely innocent. But the thing Jessie had failed to mention to anyone on the team, was how horribly home sick she was. She missed London, Canada, but she also missed LA, where she had spent years playing soccer under the sun. The only time she felt good, the only time where she forgot how far from home she was, was when she was with you. Jessie’s eyes welled up, tears streaming down her cheeks, causing the players she was close to (Sam, Erin, Magda, Pernille and Niahm) to widen their eyes in panic. "I didn’t mean too-" Erin started saying. "No. No. I’m sorry." She sniffled, quickly rushing into the interior of Cobham, leaving a confused group of blues.
You were driving peacefully in your car. It was 9:25 and you were jamming out to music, singing to yourself loudly. You were a horrible singer, and any time you wanted to annoy your teammates, you would sing them a song. Your music was annoyingly interrupted by an incoming call from Magda. You answered it. "Hey, Mags." You said to her. "Y/n. How far from Cobham are you?" Magda asked. "Uhh… like 10 minutes." You answered, switching lanes. "Damn it." Magda said, and you heard mutters from around her. "Why? What is it?" You asked. "It’s Jessie. I don’t know what happened really. One minute she was looking around and the other Erin mentioned California and she started crying and rushed inside. No one wants to go talk to her because she’s so… well she’s shy. You’re the only person who can get her out of her shell." Magda said. Your heart raced as you heard Magda say there was something wrong with the Canadian. "Okay. I’ll be there in five." You said to her, entering the highway. "You said you were ten minutes away." Magda said. "I will be there in five." You said sternly.
You hung up Magda’s call and quickly pressed your foot on the gas.
As promised, you were there five minutes later. You rushed out of your car, grabbing your bag and hurrying towards the field in your slides. "Where is she?" You asked a group of the girls, they all pointed towards the door leading to the Cobham changing rooms. You nodded sternly and tossed Millie your bag. "Catch."
You didn’t waste time looking to see if she had caught it or not, instead, you pushed open the doors and walked towards the changing rooms. There were two, you chose the left one. You were right. Jessie was sitting on the bench, her head in her hands. She was still wearing her wet raincoat. "Jess?" You said gently. Her head shot up and you saw her bloodshot eyes. "Hey. Sorry, I’ll be out in a minute." She said, her voice shaky. "No, it’s okay. And you can take all the time in the world. Can I sit down?" You said to her, ending towards her slightly trembling frame.
She nodded and you took a seat beside her. "What is it?" You asked her. "And don’t say nothing because I can be really annoying and I’ll get it out of you." You told her. "You aren’t annoying." Jessie said. "I am. Magda made me promise not to be annoying to you for the first three months. It’s been really hard." You told Jessie.
She let out a laugh and you subconsciously smiled wildly. "Did she really?" Jessie asks, looking up from her feet to look at you instead. "Yep. Payed me twenty pounds and everything. I get twenty more if you don’t complain about me by the end of the three months." You added. "Well i’ll make sure not to complain then." Jessie smiled. "Thank you."
There was a pause between you both, broken by you repeating your question. "What’s wrong?"
"Im homesick. Like… really homesick. And it’s so stupid because I’m a grown adult and I was barely homesick when I went to university but now… I don’t sleep, I have trouble eating. Everything is unfamiliar." Jessie confessed to you, looking back down at the ground. You took a minute to think, wanting to say the right thing. "Jess, it’s normal. You just moved to a whole new continent in the middle of a pandemic. You can’t go see your family, and they can’t come to you. And that… I can’t relate and I don’t know how it would feel but your obviously close with your family. I don’t blame you. You have a sister, right? Elysse?" You asked. Jessie’s head shot up at the mention of her little sister’s name, and her brows furrowed in confusion. "How do you know her?" Jessie asked. "She followed me on instagram. The last name caught my eye. Some wild fan probably talked to her about me." You joked. "That would be me." Jessie said. "Really?!"
Jessie laughed again, when she laughed, you felt good. "Jessie if you miss your family that much, if you miss your friends from UCLA then that means there’s something to miss. And that’s good. It means you have people back home that love you. When I moved to London I was 19. I’ve been playing for Chelsea for 3 years now and not once have I missed my family. We were never close and they were never good to me. So moving here was a relief more than anything else. When I go back to the Netherlands, it’s to see my real Dutch family. Viv Miedema, DVD, my international teammates. And you… you have your family and all the Canadian team. I know missing them hurts, but it’s just a twisted way for your mind to tell you how much love you have for them."
Jessie seemed deep in though and the tears were back in her eyes. "Shit. Fuck I’m sorry I didn’t mean to make you cry again. I-" You started saying in a panicked tone. "No, no it’s not you. It’s me. You’re just right. You’re really right." Jessie said.
There was a knock on the door but it didn’t open. "Wait a second." You told her.
You slipped out of the room to find Magda on the other side. "Could you tell Emma we need a couple more minutes. Oh and tell the team that if anyone looks at her weirdly I will kick the ball at them so hard that they’re organs come pouring out of their mouths." You threatened.
That was a genuine threat, your shot was incredibly strong, you had once broken a net by shooting it at the post so hard, and during practice penalty kicks, Emma didn’t let any keeper go in net for their own safety.
Magda nodded to you. "She’s okay though?" Magda asked. "She’s fine mom." You teased her. "You’re funny." She said sarcastically before heading back outside, pulling her rain coat over her head.
You walked back into the changing room where Jessie seemed to be sorting herself out. She had re done her hair and splashed water on her face. "I wanna do something with you." You told Jessie, patting the spot next to you on the bench. She sat down and looked at you. "Okay, go ahead." Jessie said.
"I’ve heard that one of the hardest things of moving somewhere new is that you don’t know anyone. There are no other Canadians here, and I get that, there are no other dutchies that play for Chelsea, so you don’t really really know anyone. So get to know me. You tell me a fact about you, and i’ll tell you one about me. No follow up questions aloud." You told her.
She seemed to contemplate the idea, having always been a reserved person, but eventually she gave in. "Okay. You go first." She said, bringing her legs up on the bench and sitting in a criss cross position. "I love skincare. Like I have so many products and I spend all my money on it." You told her. "Hmm. I still hold the record for fastest 5K race at my high school." Jessie said. "When I was nine, my dream job was to be a trophy wife. I just wanted to marry a rich man." You told her, making her laugh. "I’ve had four dogs, all of them golden retrievers." Jessie told you. "I’ve never told anyone this… but on my first cap for the Netherlands, right before we walked out of the tunnel, I was so nervous I threw up. And then I went on to play 90 minutes." You told Jessie. "Didn’t you score like two goals on your debut?" Jessie asked. "No follow up questions!" You grounded her. "Okay one last thing from both of us because we need to go to training." Jessie said. "Deal."
"I hate being in front of the camera. It gives me so much anxiety." Jessie said. You had noticed that. She would often hide behind you while walking out of the team bus or in other situations with photographers. "Hm. Well, I’ve been cheated on twice and one time by Sam’s teammate which is extremely awkward." You told her. "Really? That’s horrible. But who?" She asked you.
You stood up and extended your hand for her to take. "Jessie Fleming. Have you learned nothing? No. Follow. Up. Questions." You said.
She groaned and you laughed, opening the door for her and letting her out. "You’re okay though. Right?" You asked her, grabbing her hand and gently rubbing your thumb over the back of it. She looked down at it before looking at you for a second. "I am now." She said.
You walked out, your heart racing and not letting go of her hand. You only dropped it when you guys made it outside. The rain was still coming down heavy but as promised, the girls weren’t looking at you. You ditched your jacket and threw it to the side of the field. "You’ll be cold!" Jessie told you as you both jogged towards the group who were doing a rondo. "I won’t."
You trained for a bit less than two hours and then you went inside for a gym session. Everyone was given a quick fifteen minutes to dry up and that’s when you regretted taking off your coat. Everyone was soaked but you… it was a whole other story. You and the girls changed, and when you took off your shorts and your shirt, you realized how the rain had soaked your underwear and sports bra. You groaned loudly as the wet fabric, making the girls look at you. "Holy shit you’re soaked." Guro laughed at you as you slipped on another pair of shorts. "Thanks, Guro. I noticed." You told her. "Urgh the material is sticking to my skin this is gross." You groaned. "Should have worn your coat." Jessie said as the teamed looked at her shocked. "Is Jessie Fleming being cocky?" Sam asked, walking up to her and shaking her shoulders, making her laugh. "I learned from the best." She said, nodding towards you. You took a bow and then walked into the washroom to stand under the hand dryer to try and dry your bra. You were in an awkward position, trying to get under the dryer when the girls walked in, phones out and filming you. "You guys are assholes!" You yelled at them, flipping them off. "Oh this is gold." Magda said. "I would expect better form you Eriksson!" You told her. "C’mon, the captain needs to have a little fun too."
Due to the material of your sports bra, it did not dry, but you went to the gym anyways and did your sessions. The photographers were there, taking pictures and videos of all of you. The camera man came up to you and you jokingly flexed your bicep, earning wolf whistles from the team. The media team was filming one of those videos, he had been filming your workout, along with other players. You saw him heading towards Jessie’s direction and you stopped your reps to walk over to her. You stood behind the camera man who was about to start filming and ushered her towards you. She got up from rolling out her muscles and walked towards you. You put your hands on her shoulders and spun her around so that you were standing between her and the camera.
The camera man panned around the room and he didn’t get a shot of Jessie as you stood in front of her. "Thank you." She said. "It’s all good, but you should get used to the camera, it’s a big part of our job." You told her. She nodded, understanding and smiled at you adorably. "Hey, spot me?" You asked her. "Of course." You guys headed towards the bench press section and you put the weights on the bars. You completed your reps, too busy on making sure your posture was good to notice that Jessie was looking down at you with a special look in her eye, and you were both too focused to notice the camera filming you.
The gym session ended and you all went back to changing room to shower and then put on your change of clothes. "You guys wanna get coffee?" Sam asked the group as you all changed. The rain had stopped so you put on a pair of white shorts and a big yellow crewneck along with white socks and your favorite beige air Jordan 1’s.
Most of the girls already had plans but you didn’t, and to your joy, Jessie didn’t either. So, you, Magda, Pernille Sam, Guro, Zecira, Lauren, Jessie and Niahm all walked to the parking lot in a big group. Everyone took their own cars to get to the outdoor coffee shop you guys loved, and Jessie, who didn’t have a car yet, ended up carpooling with you.
"You should get a car, Jess." You told her, plugging in your phone to the bluetooth and starting up the car. "Driving in London makes me nervous, the sides of the road are different." Jessie told you. "Ahh, I understand that. Then I’ll drive you." You told her. "Where do you live?"
Jessie gave you her adresse. "That’s only like ten minutes from my house. It’s barely a detour. Let me drive you, please." You told her, looking away from the road briefly to give her your best puppy eyes. She cracked immediately. "Fine."
You cheered and Jessie laughed. What you hadn’t told her was that you did not live ten minutes from her. You lived about thirty minutes from her. But you would have drove an hour to have her in your car every morning. To have her to yourself a bit longer than everyone else.

OBITUARY
KRIS KRISTOFFERSON
Country music superstar, A-list Hollywood actor
LOS ANGELES — Kris Kristofferson, a Rhodes scholar with a deft writing style and rough charisma, died Saturday.
He was 88.
The country music superstar and A-list Hollywood actor died at his home on Maui, Hawaii, family spokeswoman Ebie McFarland said in an email.
McFarland said Kristofferson died peacefully, surrounded by his family.
No cause was given.
Starting in the late 1960s, the Brownsville native wrote such classics standards as “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,” “Help Me Make it Through the Night,” “For the Good Times” and “Me and Bobby McGee.”
While Kristofferson was a singer, many of his songs were best known as performed by others, whether Ray Price crooning “For the Good Times” or Janis Joplin belting out “Me and Bobby McGee.”
He also starred opposite Ellen Burstyn in director Martin Scorsese’s 1974 film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore , starred opposite Barbra Streisand in the 1976 A Star Is Born and acted alongside Wesley Snipes in Marvel’s Blade in 1998.
Kristofferson, who could recite William Blake from memory, wove intricate folk music lyrics about loneliness and tender romance into popular country music.
With his long hair and bell-bottomed slacks and counterculture songs influenced by Bob Dylan, he represented a new breed of country songwriters along with such peers as Willie Nelson, John Prine and Tom T. Hall.
“There’s no better songwriter alive than Kris Kristofferson,” Nelson said during a November 2009 award ceremony for Kristofferson held by BMI.
“Everything he writes is a standard, and we’re all just going to have to live with that.”
He was a Golden Gloves boxer and football player in college, received a master’s degree in English from Merton College at the University of Oxford in England and turned down an appointment to teach at the Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., to pursue songwriting in Nashville. Hoping to break into the industry, he worked as a part-time janitor at Columbia Records’ Music Row studio.
At times, the legend of Kristofferson was larger than real life. Johnny Cash liked to tell a mostly exaggerated story of how Kristofferson, a former Army pilot, landed a helicopter on Cash’s lawn to give him a tape of “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” with a beer in one hand.
Over the years in interviews, Kristofferson said with all respect to Cash, while he did land a helicopter at Cash’s house, the Man in Black wasn’t even home at the time, the demo tape was a song that no one ever actually cut and he certainly couldn’t fly a helicopter holding a beer.
In a 2006 interview with The Associated Press, he said he might not have had a career without Cash.
“Shaking his hand when I was still in the Army backstage at the Grand Ole Opry was the moment I’d decided I’d come back,”
Kristofferson said. “It was electric. He kind of took me under his wing before he cut any of my songs. He cut my first record that was record of the year. He put me on stage the first time.”
In 1973, he married fellow songwriter Rita Coolidge and together they had a successful duet career that earned them two Grammy awards.
They divorced in 1980.
He retired from performing and recording in 2021.

Sinéad O’Connor slams old pal Kris Kristofferson for toxic masculinity
Sinéad O’Connor – aka Magda Davitt, or Shuhada’ Sadaqat – is back on Twitter with a vengeance these days and has since shut down her account.
Over the weekend, Sinéad sent out a number of pleas from County Wicklow regarding her missing 14-year-old son Shane, who thankfully was found safe and sound on Monday morning.
Even the police got involved, and when Shane was found “safe and well,” Sinéad tweeted “alhamdulillah,” Arabic for “praise be to God.” (You’ll remember that she converted to Islam last year.)
The 52-year-old Sinéad also let the world know about a long-ago fling with the singer/actor Kris Kristofferson, who’s now 82.
A fan of Sinéad’s on Twitter shared the true story of how Kristofferson came to Sinéad’s aid in the days after she shredded a photo of the Pope on "Saturday Night Live" in 1992, and faced the wrath of an angry nation afterward.
Not long after, Sinéad was one of the featured performers at a Bob Dylan tribute concert at Madison Square Garden, and the crowd booed lustily.
Kristofferson was sent to the stage by the organizers to take the visibly upset Sinéad off, but instead, he told her not to let the “bastards get you down.”
So with Kristofferson’s words of encouragement, she continued, singing a capella about injustice and war, and he was the first one onstage afterward to give her a hug.
The aforementioned fan, Audra Williams, shared the story on Twitter in the context of the new Gillette ad that’s whipped up so much debate.
Williams tweeted, “The recent Gillette ad has started/furthered a lot of conversations about what alternatives to toxic masculinity look like. This is it.” Underneath the tweet was a photo of Sinéad being comforted by Kristofferson onstage during the Dylan show.
Sinéad, using her @magdadavitt77 handle, offered her take on the fan’s opinion and it was pretty surprising, not to mention crass.
“I would not agree Kris wasn’t toxically masculine. He took full advantage when he got the chance and then immediately turned nasty once…” and we won’t go on given that we’re a family site.
She ended the quote with the hashtag #NoHeroOfMine.
Sinéad further elaborated on Monday morning.
“In case my use of the words ‘took advantage’ [in] an earlier tweet might be misconstrued I wish to make clear that in no way, shape or form was I in any way sexually assaulted by Kris Kristofferson. And that the one time we did have sex, it was consensual.”
Sinéad seems to have made quite an impression on Kristofferson.
He wrote a song 10 years ago called “Sister Sinéad” in which he called her a “bald-headed, brave little girl.” Guess the feeling isn’t mutual.

Welcome to spnfistfight, round two, child edition!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
After a stunning victory by Ms. Eileen Leahy, we're following up with a second brawl. This time, with children. The rules are simple:
1. The character must be or have been under 18 during the course of the show. If they have aged over 18, the under 18 version of the character will be used. Possession does not count if the supernatural being is an adult.
2. No weapons or superpowers are permitted in the ring. Only their wits and their fists.
Submissions are to be sent through the ask box. I am looking for preferably 64, so we can go twice as long as last time, but 32 is the minimum. Submissions are closing on June 4, and Round One will begin shortly after.
The child fights will be tagged as both #spnfistfight and #spnchildfight. Personal posts are under jes.txt.
If you have any questions about submissions or rules, send me an ask, I'd love to help.
Participants are under the cut :)

Eurovision 2004 - Number 9 - Goya - "All My Senses"
youtube
Like NDR in Germany, TVP in Poland truly pushed out the boat to get the biggest names possible for their national final in 2004. Goya are another example of this. They are a band formed in the mid 1990s around lead singer Magdalena Wójcik. In the first part of the 2000s, they found success with a cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit, followed by two albums and a string of their own singles. That in turn led to bigger gigs such as supporting Peter Gabriel during the Polish concerts of his world tour.
When TVP came calling, they responded with All My Senses. It's a gentle rock ballad, with a low key instrumentation that sits behind Madga's vocals biding its time. Even when it the chorus hits, it doesn't go for it. This a song about restraint and control with little synth motifs and phrases interspersed over the stripped back bassline and guitar. Truly it's about Magda's and her voice. She's front and centre telling us about all her favourite things and how someone she's smitten with makes her experience all of those things in real time.
It's full of strong passions and sensations, but remains clandestine, private and held back. Another song might crave climax and release, but here the pleasures and joy is derived from buttoning up and restriction of those deeply sensual experiences as expressed by the music.
From a Eurovision perspective the deliberate lack of spectacle probably wouldn't have worked and ultimately Goya ended up sixth of the fifteen songs with a strong televote - just under half the size of the winner.
Goya's next two albums went big. Both made the top 10 in the Polish charts featuring more chill yet tense vibes, like a rockier version of Portishead. They also managed to hit number one in the singles chart with a stand-alone single Tylko mnie kochaj (Just Love Me). Krajowe Eliminacje didn't manage to launch them internationally, but it did yield huge results in their home market. Magda released her own solo album in 2010 while the band have been releasing sporadic albums to this day. A band of quality and a with a distinct sound standing apart from their peers. Here's the lead track from the 2005 album Smak słów (The Taste of Words)

Kid AU where Sam and Castiel meet in the woods, climbing the same tree. Both love it, and talk to it, and are unaware of each other's presence for a long while. But run into each other in passing. And again, where they don't say anything, they talk with actions of showing their care for the tree. And find themselves meeting there, blooming a friendship. One day Sam suggests a tree house, it's perfect for one, and Castiel agrees. And they begin their project of building a tree house, figuring out what they need, going to Bobby Singer for loose boards knowing he'll give them some. And them being so proud of the home they've built together. Surprisingly sturdy, and they spend so much time in there, until Sam stops showing up. Castiel doesn't know why, but hopes for a long time he'll come back. But eventually, it's too much for Castiel to return, it goes from one day not going. To two days. To three days. To four years. It's not until adulthood, Castiel returns, and it's unclear if it's a goodbye to the place or maybe a new beginning, but Castiel finds a familiar face, Sam. And neither move at first, ghosts of friends who are unsure if they're truly who they think they are, before both ask, Sam? Cas? Before either know it they're moving, running into a hug, clinging on so the other doesn't disappear. And they end up talking for hours and hours, even go up in the tree, before Castiel asks where Sam went. And Sam explains his family moved away, it was abrupt and he didn't have a chance to say goodbye, he fought to stay, fought to say bye at the very least, but ultimately lost. And Castiel reaches out for Sam's hand, just happy to see Sam again. Believing it's a dream, and could do without waking up. And the two eventually do leave, but exchange information. And their friendship is rebuilt over time, and there's a first date, and a second, a many more to come. And in the same woods they met, close to their tree, they build a home together, so they can visit the tree that brought them together every day. And show their kids, Magda, Elijah, and Jack, the tree, and they love it just as much as their parents did. The two make repairs as needed, ensuring it's longevity. They both still talk to the tree, thanking it for all its brought, a friendship, a relationship, stability, a family. Everything they've ever wanted and more.

SAGA vol. 1-6 by Fiona Staples and Brian K Vaughan
Top of the Top:
Born a Crime was probably my favourite non ficition, and most of that probably is due to Trevor Noah's narration skills. It was very entertaining and heartfelt.
Less uplifting but just as gripping in a different way was Empire of Pain. Excellent book that went deep into the why and what and hows of Purdue Pharma. Anger inducing.
Lazarus Heist is great and available as a podcast. The book is more or less the podcast word for word.
Fictionwise: I read Trust at the start of the year and it was a bit soon to declare as favourite of the year, but it's stil made the final cut. Just very imaginative and intriguing. Just my kind of MetaFiction. Clever without being cleverclever.
Demon Copperhead I read right off the back of Empire of Pain so maybe that coloured my experience. I've not read any Dickens so loads of references no doubt flew past me, but the language was acrobatic and zingy. I loved it.
Wrapped up the year on a high with North Woods. That was so unexpected and entertaining. Again with the playful language, memorable characters and a unique approach to tying all the various stories together. One that sticks in the mind and makes the writer in me wonder how I can replicate his style (with my own personal twist of course.)
#a whole bunch of books#reading roundup#Still one day to go but i don't think i'm going to finish anything else#year in books#2023 in books

Trivia :
Premiere : 06/30/1952
Re-release : 02/04/1978
Premiere : 12/24/1995 (TV dubbing)
There are two Brazilian Portuguese dubbings of this film. The first from 1951 and the second from 1995.
The first dubbing is the official dubbing and is available on all home video releases.
The recording of the 1951 dub only took 4 months. Gilberto Souto (the director, translator, and supervisor) arrived in Brazil on 04/21/1951 and returned to the USA on 08/02/1951.
On the 2000 U.K. DVD release, the Brazilian Portuguese 1951 credits are included but there are errors. Mattinhos is credited as "Estevam Correa Mattos" (which is his real name) as the White Rabbit. The Cheshire Cat was credited to José Vasconcellos, but in reality, he was voiced by Jorge Goulart. Goulart sued Disney in 1996 for royalties of his voice being used on the home video releases of Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland. The King of Hearts is credited to João Dias Lopes, which is the real name of Germano. José Vasconcellos is also credited to the Mother Oyster, but in reality, she was voiced by Apollo Corrêa.
The second dubbing was done for the SBT television network for Christmas 1995 and was only shown on TV. This dubbing is not included on any home media release.
In the second dubbing, only one song was dubbed. That song being "I'm Late." This extract was treated as spoken dialogue and was dubbed. All of the other songs were in English with Brazilian Portuguese subtitles.

Note
Please tell me the vibes were as insane as it looked!! The Magda chant was so loud after she left the pitch it sounded so nice even through the tv.
omgggg I'm so happy to hear that 🥺🥺 it was nothing like kingsmeadow but at an away men's stadium it's a big achievement it could even be heard. tbh this place had great acoustics, the problem is just the reserved seating and how loads of people were just random fans and not the committed kingsmeadow singers

I think there is a (good-will) competition among Korean Phantom actors.
(I add English translations.)
1. (Opera Singer*) 김주택's recent interview.
youtube
vs
2. (Musical actor) 최재림's first interview.
* 김주택(Julian Kim) graduated from the 'Conservatorio di Musicica Giuseppe Verdi di Milano' with a unanimous highest score by the judges. And he won many concours(Giulietta Simionato, Tebaldi, Magda Olivero, Maria Caniglia, Verdi...) in Italy, France and Korea. He did 'Il barbiere di Siviglia(Figaro)' at Italy, La Traviata, Madama Butterfly, La bohème, L'elisir d'amore, Don Carlo, Lucia di Lammermoor, Simon Boccanegra, I Puritani at Italy(Venice(Venezia), Firenze, Parma...).
* 최재림 played Rent(Tom Collins), Hairspray, 남한산성, Spring Awakening, Next to Normal, Assassins, 가야십이지곡, Jesus Christ Superstar(Both Jesus and Judas), Next to Normal, Kinky boots, Notre Dame de Paris, Aida, Chicago, Hadestown, Matilda and more. He studied Opera(and as far as I know he did at least one Opera) too.
+
I wrote more informations about the other two phantom actors who will play POTO soon.
++ If you like the musical Elisabeth, Dracula and Phantom(Yeston & Kopit), you might know 전동석 already.

Lucrezia Bori was born into an aristocratic Spanish family: her father was an army officer and her mother an amateur singer. She was initially educated at a convent and also studied singing, piano and music theory at Valencia Conservatory. During a trip to Milan in 1908 the full potential of her voice was recognised, leading to further study there with the teachers Sibella and Melchiorre Vidal. She made her operatic debut at the Teatro Adriano in Rome in October 1908 as Micaëla / Carmen and was promptly invited to sing Mimì / La Bohème in Genoa, appearing also as Manon / Manon, Marguerite / Faust (Gounod), Gilda / Rigoletto and Butterfly / Madama Butterfly in other Italian regional theatres during the 1908–1909 season.
While singing Butterfly at Naples, Bori auditioned for La Scala, Milan (the listening panel consisting of Gatti-Casazza, Puccini and Toscanini) and was quickly engaged for the 1910–1911 season. During the Metropolitan Opera’s visit to Paris in 1910 she was recommended as a substitute for Lina Cavalieri as Manon / Manon Lescaut. Singing opposite Caruso and with Toscanini conducting she enjoyed a great success, but was unable to accept the offer of an immediate engagement at the Met because of her contract with La Scala. She made her debut at La Scala during January 1911 as Carolina / Il matrimonio segreto, followed by Juliette / Roméo et Juliette (Gounod) opposite Leonid Sobinov. During 1911 and 1912 at La Scala she sang Octavian / Der Rosenkavalier, the Goose Girl / Königskinder and Mistress Ford / Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor in the first Italian performances of these works.
During 1911 Bori appeared for the first time in South America, singing Butterfly, Carolina, Puccini’s Manon and Mimì at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. Her debut at the Met finally came in November 1912, once again opposite Caruso in Manon Lescaut. The veteran music critic of the New York Times, Henry Krehbiel, wrote: ‘…she surprised the audience, critical and uncritical alike, by the real fineness of her vocal art – by exquisite exhibition of legato singing, by exquisite diction, impeccable intonation and moving pathos.’ In addition to her busy schedule at the Met, Bori sang Nanetta / Falstaff in the Verdi centenary celebrations at Busseto in 1913 with Toscanini conducting, and returned to Buenos Aires in 1914, enjoying great success in the premiere of Carlos López Buchardo’s opera El sueño de Alma with Alessandro Bonci. At the Met during 1914 she sang in the first American performances of Montemezzi’s L’amore dei tre re (as Fiora) and Wolf-Ferrari’s L’amore medico (as Lucinda), with Toscanini conducting both productions, and during 1915 she appeared as Ah-Yoe in Leoni’s L’oracolo and in the title role of Mascagni’s Iris, while also singing in other repertoire works such as Pagliacci (Nedda), Carmen (Micaëla), La Bohème (Mimì) and Les Contes d’Hoffmann (Antonia).
Between 1915 and 1919 Bori did not sing at all because of nodules on her vocal chords: a series of operations was required to eliminate these, as well as complete silence. Fully recovered, she sang Mimì and Nanetta opposite Beniamino Gigli at Monte Carlo in 1919. She returned to the Metropolitan Opera in 1920, to sing the title role in Wolf-Ferrari’s Il segreto di Susanna. Thereafter she was based in New York and became one of the Met’s best-loved stars. She took part in the American premiere of Mozart’s Così fan tutte, as Despina, in 1922. Other new roles which she sang in New York included Rimsky-Korsakov’s Snowmaiden (1922), Suzel / L’amico Fritz (1923), Mistress Ford / Falstaff (1925), Mélisande / Pelléas et Mélisande (1925), Concepción / L’Heure espagnole (1925), Salud / La vida breve (1926), Mignon (1927), Magda / La rondine (1928), Louise (1930) and Mary / Peter Ibbetson (Deems Taylor, 1931) in addition to her regular roles, which also included Violetta / La traviata, Manon, and Giulietta / Les Contes d’Hoffmann.
The financial crash of 1929 and subsequent economic depression caused monetary problems for the Met. As one of the company’s most popular stars,
Bori agreed to help it by postponing her retirement from 1933 to 1936. In addition she became the Chair of the ‘Committee to save the Metropolitan Opera House’, working tirelessly to raise funds through appeals and performances. Bori was also active elsewhere in America, appearing at San Francisco in 1933 (Manon, Mimì, Nedda) and in 1934 (Manon, Violetta, Magda and Mignon). She participated in the farewell gala for Gatti-Casazza at the Metropolitan in 1935, and a year later was the centre of her own star-studded farewell gala, the entire proceeds of which she donated to the company. An early radio opera star, Bori continued to broadcast occasionally, also becoming the first singer to be invited to join the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Opera (in 1935). She also became Chair of the Metropolitan Opera Guild, the company’s key supporters’ organisation, in 1941.
Bori was an extremely polished singer and actress. Although her voice was not large and was limited at the top of its range, she used these aspects positively to portray fragile and pathetic characters to great effect. To quote the distinguished Italian critic Rodolfo Celletti, ‘…she imbued them with intense and passionate feeling and, in the comic repertory, with gentle and stylised charm.’ Bori recorded continuously throughout her career, both in the acoustic process and electrically from 1925 to 1937. Her moving singing may also be heard in several early ‘off-air’ recordings, for instance as Mélisande, captured in Boston during the Metropolitan’s 1934 tour.

David D’or is an Israeli singer of Libyan descent. Here, with Cantor Magda Fishman, he sings his iconic 1993 song, "Tishmor al HaOlam Yeled,” which translates roughly to “Watch over the world, child.” It’s not exactly upbeat -- there’s a lot of darkness in the world for the child to see, the child certainly won’t understand very much at first, and the grownups haven’t done a terribly good job of keeping the world in good condition. But it’s also a song of trust and love. The grownups understand that watching over the world won’t be easy for the child, but they trust that the child is good and strong enough to prevail. Knowledge is powerful, and its acquisition may mean sacrificing some innocence . . . but it’s for the worthiest of causes.
