In addition to the wonderful gifts exchanged during our Trick or Treat event a very generous anonymous donor commissioned a little portrait of every person who participated in the event's MC.
To our anonymous donor:
I am sure I can speak for everyone, when I say we can't thank you enough for this generous gift. You went above and beyond what anyone expected for this event. You did so with the pure intentions of simply bringing joy to others and trying to brighten someone else's day. You didn't ask for a thank you, but you deserve to be recognized. So thank you! You truly are a gift to this fandom and we are so very lucky to have you. You deserve all the love and support. Please know you make a difference here. Thank you for these gorgeous gifts 💛💛💛

PBS has stuff adults can get into too! Here are some of my favorite channels :3c
In the early 70s Sesame Street was created with an eye towards educating poor, inner-city children for free, and became a massive hit with all children. In 2016, faced with going off the air forever after facing conservative efforts to destroy public broadcasting since basically its beginning, new episodes became a timed exclusive for premium cable network HBO. In 2022 HBO Max, newly merged with and taken over by reality TV channel Discovery, removed Sesame Street episodes and spin-offs from streaming as a tax write-off and scheme to avoid paying residuals.

By looking at the layers beneath our feet, geologists have been able to identify and describe crucial episodes in life’s history. These key events frame the chapters in the story of life on earth and the system we use to bind all these chapters together is the Geologic Time Scale.

@edwardspoonhands recently pitted me against Kallie on @scishow Quiz Show. Not gonna say who won, but I think my face says it all.

Eons- my favourite YouTube channel, has several videos about a lot of these things including one that does explain some of The Great Unconformity. Check it out, it’s amazing :)
The field of geology can unlock a deep Dread in a similar way that the spaces between stars or the depths of the ocean can, something existential and primordial.
I have learned about the moving and colliding and buckling of tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface, how the crust is miles thick and the heat increases with every kilometer closer to the core. The forces it would take to push mountains miles into the sky and melt and compress rock and force continents to bend and break? How impossibly heavy a mile of stone must be?
Best not to think about it. You will never be crushed by a mile of stone, or warped and metamorphosed by the heat and pressure in the depths of the earth, or anything like that.
Well.
I mean. Perhaps you will be after you are dead, if you turn into a fossil. Lots of things that were once alive and breathing are now trapped so deep in the earth we will never find them, and they will never be exposed to light again.
...Just don’t worry about it.
Geologic time, too, is crushing. The Grand Canyon forms a cross-section of millions of years of geologic history. Near the bottom, there is a layer of rock from the Cambrian period, the Tapeats Sandstone—about 500 million years old, and 230 feet thick. Good? Okay. Below that, a body of impossibly old rock called the Vishnu Schist, which is hundreds of millions of years older, from the Precambrian era.
(Why? Well, there’s a gap in the record called the Great Unconformity, which represents hundreds of millions of years of geologic history just straight up fucking gone. We don’t know why. Maybe don’t think about that either.)
Rocks from the Precambrian era are rarely exposed to the surface, which is why fossils from then are so rare—and when we find fossils, they are of living things so alien, we have no words for them. Some of the Precambrian fossils are always being slowly, inexorably annihilated in the earth’s molten mantle, pressed down and forced underneath continents to meet a death beyond death.
But I don’t know what chills me more—the thought of those Precambrian fossils, records of living creatures so unlike us we cannot name them, slowly being subducted into the mantle, pushed underneath miles of stone into ever-increasing heat and pressure until they are erased forever from existence, or the thought—the reality—that they are simply...still down there. Deep, deep beneath us, locked in a primordial tomb that we cannot reach because it is just...too...deep.
We can find the imprints of microscopic organisms in stone that tell us that they lived, but being pushed underneath the earth and melted into magma? That’s truly irretrievable annihilation. And it happens all the time.
I’m just saying. There’s a reason people thought hell lay deep beneath the earth.

this is why eons is great
[ID: A screencap from PBS Eons with presenter Kallie Moore. The subtitles read "Now, while death by barbed penis worm is certainly not an appealing way to go, priapulids themselves." The subtitle cuts off after "themselves." End ID.]

Do you have any recs for science/evolution/biology channels on youtube mayhaps :0
(Tysm for answering my birds ask btw it was such an interesting read!)
.
Thank you for asking about the birds, I had fun writing it!
My main recs are
PBS Eons: 10m videos about biology and evolution across a bunch of different subjects from bacteria to domestication to dinosaurs https://youtube.com/c/eons
Moth Light Media: more indie channel than pbs eons but similar scope, though they have more of a focus on ancient biology and evolution https://youtube.com/channel/UCOh5Ht3eB4914hMUfJkKa9g
Your dinosaurs are wrong: longer videos comparing dinosaurs in the general media with the most up to date science on how they looked and behaved, usually by looking at a dinosaur toy (or several) and then making a picture piece by piece of what was more likely. They actually have videos on two channels: they started out on Chaotic Good, which has more of an engineering science focus (but is also good), and then split off into their own channel in the last couple years. https://youtube.com/c/ChaoticGoodChris https://youtube.com/c/YourDinosaursAreWrong
Dead sound: only a couple videos but they’re animated and absolutely gorgeous https://youtube.com/c/DeadSound
Snake discovery: more exotic pets education, but Emily (the main person) is a science educator so there’s still a bunch of cool biology stuff https://youtube.com/c/SnakeDiscovery
Mama dr Jones: not specifically evolution but still technically biology and science education, she’s a gynaecologist who talks about human biology https://youtube.com/c/MamaDoctorJones

Mr.Gaiman, you already know . Pls DO NOT INTERACT
×××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××
"There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure"
- Paulo Coelho
×××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××
Warnings: Blood, Slight gore, Vampirism, Vampire feeding
×××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××
Kalliope blinked as she saw the Endless vanish like dust in front of her, her knees unbuckled and she needed to lean on the metal table in front of her
"Men, no matter if they are deities or some other shit, always proud and not accepting help" Kalliope exclaimed to herself, leaving the break room and going to work
She spent the next few hours trying to occupy her mind with her work and ignoring the dryness in her throat when she got close to her patients. She prayed to the gods for the shift come to an end so she could eat
Losing control of her feelings was losing control of the thirst and letting the monstrosity that was part of her come out. Kalliope ignored her thirst while she took care of the children again
"Kalli, you can pack your things. I'll take over from here" Sherryl passed her arm around Kalliope's neck
The woman smiled minimally, her eyes focusing on the vein in the redhead's neck, and just nodded as she disentangled herself from her arm. Kalli blew her hair out and walked out of the hospital, inhaling the smell of the cars that passed by on the night streets
She felt someone start to follow her, a small smile appearing on her lips. Kalli took a shortcut to a dead end, hiding behind garbage cans and waiting for the man to appear
"What the fuck, where is she?" The man looked angry and drunk, it would be too easy for Kalliope
The woman appeared from behind the dumpster and with a fist movement, paralyzed the man and brought him to his knees on the dirty floor of the alley. Kalliope appeared in front of the man and the man was startled
"W-What...?!" The man tried to move again but couldn't, Kalliope silenced the man with a mental command
Her eyes finally mutated, turning the scleras completely scarlet-red and the eyes turning completely black. She opened her mouth and displayed two razor-sharp fangs
Kalliope moored herself to the man's neck, tasting his blood like a woman drinking her first dose of water after years of thirst. Although Kalli kept her feelings in order so as not to lose control, the sensation of the blood rushing down her throat was delicious and satisfied her hunger.
When she finished eating, she realized that the man's pulse was almost weak, so she decided to heal him. Releasing him from her spell and wiping her mouth with her hands, he left the alley and walked quietly back to her house
Her thirst satisfied though her anger not so much, she was still angry at the Endless but he needed her help and she decided to help him even if he didn't want to. Kalliope was stubborn by all accounts, something characteristic of her personality and even of her kind and helpful side with everyone
Kalliope was an interesting being, even considered impossible, both Witch and Vampire and thus being called a Hybrid. She had been transformed at the age of 25, almost 13 years ago, but somehow she managed to keep her magic intact and even further amplified by her vampiric side
Although she needed to consume human blood to quench some of her thirst, and therefore always kept her emotions in order so she wouldn't have 'accidents' with other humans, she loved being among them
She loved them so much so that she had chosen to be a nurse and help people in need, with the help of her powers and even in order to nurture her gentle nature (and share her gifts with others)
Although she (at times during her short immortality) considered herself to be a cursed monster who parasitized on innocent beings to continue living, Kalliope only fed on cruel and rotten people and sometimes drained their bodies to the last drop
And she would be lying through her teeth if she denied liking it. Kalliope still needed many years to embrace the creature she was, a bloodthirsty creature in women's clothing

For the person who asked for podcast recommendations since I couldn't fit it in the replies:
My number one scientific podcast recommendation is "ologies with allie ward"
Its more of an "entry level" podcast since you don't have to have a foundational understanding of evolutionary biology or archeology to understand. Mind you, this podcast has a LOT more than just paleontology on its list of topics, each episode is an interview with a professional in the field of the episodes topic going over their background in STEM, interesting stories from the field and the lab and then just general knowledge. There's episodes on everything from california condors to headbutting and bad knees. Its not as "dry" as my other recommendations
My other big recommendation isn't actually a podcast, but you don't really have to watch the videos to listen and enjoy them. Pbs eons
Has a wide variety of interesting topics about the evolution of life on earth and is my favorite non podcast show, period. You don't need to have preexisting knowledge of paleontology for this one either as the explain different fields very simply and eloquently. If you want a gateway into the history of life on earth, this is one of your best sources.
As for the deep end of straight up information to be transmitted directly into your brain, paleocast, terrible lizards, and common decent are your way to go. These podcasts handle much more niche and complex and to some people, more boring, topics to dig into. If you really want a deeper understanding of earths history and get into the nitty gritty, this is the way to go. Paleocast is more general paleontology, terrible lizards is dinosaur based as you would expect, and common descent has an emphasis on evolutionary paleontology but also covers general paleontology on various topics.
