So recently on reddit someone asked "Why do people make Kai'sa's design such a big deal?"

Like:

League of legends already has a shit ton of beautiful characters, in fact out of the entire roster of 62 females (currently) only two could be considered ugly and that's a literal ice bird and demon dog. There are a few outlier champions like: Illaoi and Bel'veth that arent "conventionally attractive" but can still be considered beautiful/fuckable by a majority.

Theres nothing wrong with having a beautiful character but when you have a design that is controversial to their story and you prioritize the sex appeal and marketability over the individual it becomes a problem. Especially with the insane amount of skinny pretty women that dominate the ratio here. I'm not asking for ugly characters I'm asking for good design. Besides that's what skins are for.

Lets also appreciate these beauties for representing diversity:

Illaoi: First woman to have an extreme muscular build

Rell: First woman to have an afro

Jinx: First woman (no lolis dont count) to have a flat physique

Arcane Vi: First woman to be adapted into a masculine tomboy (so excited shes now cannon to runeterra lore)

Taliyah: First woman to have unconventioal beauty in facial features (also first trans in star guardian)

Kalista: First woman designed without beauty or attractiveness as primary goal.

Renata Glasc: First woman to actually look like an aged lady (looking at you camille)

They did Kalista so dirty 😭😭😭 so I took matters into my own hands lol.

I liked the colour scheme but the skin was just human Kalista in a tracksuit??? Amped up the edge a little bit to give y’all a gladiator dullahan and turned her spears into ribs.

Also ik each sf character has their own little metal symbol but I thought it’d be cool to change Kalista’s to look more like Viego’s (tldr: I’m lazy)

Yet another skin release, yet another disappointing prestige skin, this time for Katarina.

My main gripe with prestige skins when it comes to design is that they're just... boring? And I don't mean that they lack detail or skill, absolutely not, the in-game effects are stunning. But the design details are just stripped away

Let's look at the latest prestige skin, Faerie Court Katarina. First, the base one

I won't get into splashart structure too much, since that is a different topic entirely, but I will mention the colour palette is vastly different from other skins in this line, already distinguishing Katarina as someone in a different position, an outsider even.

Now, for design details. I'll list the ones that stick out to me the most

The blades are very thin, resembling insect wings or some type of mandibles. Insect

In the wing patterns there are eyes, reminiscent of some species of moths, and the wing shape is sharper, again leaning more towards moths instead of the butterflies of other skins

While it is a very fantasy design, the outfit clearly has armored pieces in it, immediately establishing her as a warrior of some sort, albeit distinct from Kalista. Her outfit is light, but protective, maybe less a brawler but more a, you know. Assassin (this is all ignoring the boob window. We all know the deal with boob windows, in a design analysis it may as well not be here)

The shoulder pads have scales and fur. The scales fit in with the general bug theme, while the fur further alludes to moths

A splashart specific design detail - in the art Katarina looks like she's emerging from a cocoon. The butterfly and moth theming is very strong

Now, let's compare that to the prestige version of the skin

Here the colour palette is, of course, changed to fit the prestige style, which is completely fine. The composition is more reminiscent of other prestige skins aswell, which means that Katarina's pose and surroundings don't reflect the theme as well as the base splashart.

And for the details I mentioned above

The blades are now shaped exactly like Katarina's base swords, with the added wing shapes at the handles

The wings are more rounded, and in the spots that had the eyes, there are now holes (which. Why. Cmon)

The armor pieces are all gone, including the shoulder pads with the fur and scales

The outfit has more fragments reminiscent of butterfly wings and flower petals

These changes are not inherently bad. They make for an attractive design. My issue is that the design is boring. Clearly a lot of thought went into the base design, adding many subtle but recognizable visual allusions to moths and insects in general. The prestige skin has nothing of the sort, only having some flaps of fabric that look vaguely wing-like

I think the design philosophy of prestige skins is immensely disappointing. I noticed that trend first with Star Guardian Syndra and Space Groove Nami, who both had those same issues, taking away the pieces of original design that made those designs unique and representative of their skin line

When Riot announced they would be changing the way they treat prestige skins, I was excited to see what they come up with, but honestly? All these prestige skins do is make me appreciate the base ones more

ISOLDE

Isolde is the late wife of Viego and former Queen of Camavor. Her death began the events that culminated with The Ruination.

Early Life

Isolde was a poor seamstress born in a rural colony within Camavor. In her childhood, she crafted Gwen, a doll that embodied her fantasies of adventure and royalty. One day, the recently appointed king of Camavor, Viego, fell in love at first sight, and asked for her hand in marriage. Viego loved his new wife, so much that he refused to go anywhere without her and focused more on her than ruling his kingdom. This bred contempt from his allies, knowing that Camavor would crumble due to Viego's neglectful rulership.

Camavor's enemies took advantage of Viego's ignorance, and sent an assassin to kill Viego using a poisoned blade. The assassination was successfully foiled, but Isolde was accidentally grazed by the dagger and subsequently poisoned. As she slowly succumbed to the poison, Viego's sanity deteriorated as he became more desperate for a cure. His niece and most trusted general Kalista, was sent to find a cure for the Queen's condition. She discovered the Blessed Isles, and learned about the magical Waters of Life in the Isles that could cure the poison. However, Isolde had died before this news had reached Camavor.

Ruination

Viego and his army set forth for the Blessed Isles with Isolde's body. The Isle natives did not let them in and refused to bring Isolde back to life, as they believed that death was not to be subverted. Viego set his army to kill the natives; one survivor, a a custodian of the inner sanctums, instead offered to lead him straight to the Waters of Life. Isolde was lowered into the water, and quickly resurrected into a revenant of pain and anger. In her agony and confusion, she stabbed Viego with his enchanted blade, which caused the blade's magic to amplify into a eruption of Ruination. The Blessed Isles was taken over by a Black Mist and all life on it was destroyed, leaving nothing but the undead souls of the people that remained on the isles.

Return

After the Ruination, Isolde's soul was split into many fragments. The fragments spread to many different parts of Runeterra, possessing various people and objects, including Gwen, Senna, and Yorick's Maiden of the Mist.

Years later, Viego was brought back as an immortal being capable of bending the Black Mist to his will. He spread the Black Mist across Runeterra in an effort to assemble all of the pieces of Isolde's soul and bring her back to life. Seeing the harm that he was doing to the world, the Sentinels of Light raced to gather the fragments and defeat the Ruined King. In a final conflict, Viego triumphed over the Sentinels, and successfully assembled Isolde back together. However, Isolde was horrified and saddened by what Viego had become: an obsession that would destroy the world. She wished to be put to rest, prompting Sentinel Akshan to destroy her with his Absolver. The magic of Akshan's weapon revived Gwen and Senna in the process of killing Isolde, and granted her a “true death” where she would rest forever.

Appearance

Isolde was a beautiful woman with light skin and auburn hair. She would often wear the clothes of a seamstress, and while she still wore the same outfit while married to Viego, it was made slightly more extravagant after she married Viego.

Personality

Isolde was a poor seamstress who loved everything she made. She especially loved her doll Gwen. When she met Viego shortly after he became the King of Camavor, she fell in love and got married shortly after. They had a whirlwind romance, and Isolde very much cared for Viego. But that was undone when she was revived by Viego for the second time, when she saw what he had become. At that point, she wanted to die and even prompted Akshan to kill her.

Now

For rp purposes, Isolde has been revived fully, now walking again amongst everyone else. This blog is pretty fresh so i’ll add more to this page as i develop my new lore for her and future abilities. Stay tuned!
