Kali Masi - Wind Instrument @kalimasiband @takethistoheartrecords #kalimasi #rock #chicago Heads up, this album is pretty unbelievably catchy and it scratches an itch that sounds like the urgency of Rival Schools, the songwriting of bands like @suchgold and @titlefightfanclub, and the dreamy polish of @basementuk. At times, the vocals give you Jim Ward of Sparta vibes in the absolute best way possible and it’s clear that a LOT of energy was put into the engineering and mixing a la famous producers like Ed Rose’s style from the glory days of emo. This is some high test power pop/rock with a distinct post-hardcore styling and a perfectly tailored suit of old-school Midwestern Emo. Kali Masi is an outfit from Chicago that has carved a very impressive space for themselves in an oft-overloaded scene of disposable pop-punk bands that come and go before you know. Make no mistake, they’re not of that ilk and if you like any of the names I dropped in the top of this review, you owe it to yourself to give this album a try. The pressing itself is a beautiful bright red and the packaging is really well put together, it follows a complete and mindful theme, and aside from wishing that the mastering was a little more revealing and analytical on the vinyl pressing (frankly I want that from EVERYTHING I hear), I couldn’t be much happier. I get a lot of submissions for VINYLEXAMS and while I listen to everything with open ears and an open mind, it’s a special tier of albums that turn into the ones that become my favorites. This one is certainly in that rung. It’s a beautiful intersection of homage to the best parts of the emo genre with some undeniably unique and original songwriting skills, instrumentation, and that special X-factor that occurs when a band truly has a relationship and rapport with one another. Sam Porter - @kalimasiband Sam is the lead singer of Kali Masi, one of the best Midwestern emo/hardcore revival bands around (and i'm a tough judge of that...i used to be in a Midwest emo band 15 years ago lol). These guys sent me their record "Wind Instrument" a few months back and I've been obsessed ever since. Sam is the second member I've featured and I'm so stoked he picked this ripper of a @sleater_kinney album! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ He writes: "I love this record. I love it’s angular oddity and sharp attack. I Love the way the dissonant guitar melodies interlock with its soulful, pulsating choruses. I love that they kept it a secret until it was released.
