What are your thoughts on Natchathiram Nagargiradhu?

Okay I finally watched it this week, and it was good. I don't think it's Ranjith's best work though, some of the writing and script felt the weakest here in the films i have watched of his. Visually and technicality wise? Phenomenal, I think he has as a director has some of the best command of visual language in the industry and you can tell how his past as a painter and artist really show up in this film. Like the final stage performance???Amazing! Incorporating different kinds of art, animation and performance within a performance. Like just watching it, was so engaging. I think Dushara and Kalaiyarasan did a great job in their roles, the latter is able to play such little assholes i want to smack upside the head so well and ranjith really is able to get him there. I really

I also liked the plot and what he was attempting to tell through this story, but I think he struggled with such a big cast of characters he was really trying to do justice with that a lot of the side characters that kind of fell flat. Especially since he was trying to balance that with Rene as a character. It felt like almost two different stories, one with the ensemble theatre troupe and this larger commentary about love, gender, and politics and one with Rene whose story is tied to that but also about her relationships and everyday existence through caste society. She is this really wonderfully complex character who despite whatever mistakes she might make or whatever is she is expected to do she is always choosing herself and protecting herself. Her assertion of self respect was so great and I wish we were able to see more of that.

This story to me felt like one where it would benefit from a story being told through film focusing and really diving into Rene,I really really loved her character and one thing Pa. Ranjith does as a male director well I think is provide spaciousness for female emotions and complexity in a way that most male directors in kwood dont? ( see why she might read as a manic pixie dream girl, and to Arjun she was but I think within the context of the narrative and her identity, her actively choosing to live a deliberate and free life, with a community she cares and invests in is rare. Especially since you could tell how much of himself Pa.Ranjith put in Rene, just how much he had to say about her and her journey tied to his own story but I don't think we fully were able to see the full extent of that vision. Then the stories of her community, of her troupe would definitely benefit from maybe a mini series that is a continuation with the other characters in the troupe to be truly able to tell and flesh out their stories. I think he did an okay job of it, but his strength is in his ability to communicate his philosophies and worldviews require spaciousness in film so I think that fell short. I appreciate him trying to honor and respect the stories of LGBTQ+ people since he really only had so much space to work but didn't quite hit the mark.

I will say that the scene with Arjun visiting his grandmother and the events that followed was some of Ranjith's best filmmaking and especially as a commentary on caste, gender, and the absurdity of dominant caste anxieties.
