Okay, good morning, here's the essay. Putting it under a cut because Valen was JUST revealed yesterday.
So, for everyone who needs a brush up on what happened in Kamen Rider Geats with Tycoon- Keiwa was a very bubbly, social, and friendly dude until about halfway through the show where he was given darker development. He started to lose faith in Geats and began running off on his own path until things came to a head and his sister, Sara, was killed. The death of Sara launched Keiwa into chasing after who he blamed for her death and he gained a new form to do so, being the Black General. Similarly, Hanto from Kamen Rider Gavv is initially introduced as a down-to-earth, almost-naive sort of guy. Although he lost his mother to a red Gavv Granute years ago, Hanto didn't seem at all upset at the sight of Kamen Rider Gavv, another red Gavv Granute. If anything, it made him excited and fufilled-feeling to know that what he saw really happened. Hanto doesn't stay happy-go-lucky for long either as his boss was taken and killed (I assume at least. That's a theory for another day.) and this gives way to his becoming of a Kamen Rider as he accepts dubious surgery inorder to take revenge. Now, where am I going with this? Both Keiwa and Hanto have similar revenge arcs that propel them forward despite losing the person they care most about. The Bujin Sword development had a mixed reception when it aired, with most people (from what I've seen) enjoying the way Keiwa's character evolved but didn't like how quick it came and left. Me being the behind-the-scenes girlie that I am, I know that by the time that KRGeats was airing, KRGavv was being put-together and while KRGotchard was airing, KRGavv was being recorded. This gives Toei a big enough time frame to recieve the input on Kamen Rider Tycoon's story and tweak it for a new character. I have no idea if I'm making sense right now but I believe that Valen is Toei's attempt to write Keiwa again but with more time to watch his fall from grace. The end of the episode heavily reminded me of Keiwa and his disconnection from his old allies with how Hanto left the scene of the fight against the Otake Granute with his suit still on and his indifference to (or maybe he was too enraged to notice) Shoma and his Gochizo behind him. Even the line "I'm sorry boss. I'm… too far in to go back now." seems to echo Keiwa as I'm sure he's said something similar but I do NOT wanna search 10 episodes to look for it. This program was made possible by contributions to your ORE Journal from readers like you. Thank you!
