First of all, apologies for the late update of the Tumblr page again, I'm kinda slacking with it lately. Sometimes there's just not enough time to get everything done. The usual order is: Monday: making the episode, Tuesday: putting the show online and spreading the word on the social media, and Wednesday: Tumblr. But you know sometimes there's just other things to do on Wednesdays and then I tend to forget the following days. Anyway, let's get down to business. Pictured below is the Australian almost unpronounceable duo Troth. I recently picked up the CD compilation of their early work "Uncut Flowers", released last year by the fine people of Fördämning Arkiv, and I absolutely love it. It compiles early very limited cassettes and some compilation tracks and I think that at this very moment I like it more than the two albums I have from the band (one on Knekelhuis and the other on Mammas Mysteriska Jukebox), but I'll have to give those two another spin. It's a pretty unique band anyway, combining elements of the Bristol scene with dub and kraut influences. Very good release, and it's still available at Discreet Music. And it's on CD and yeah seems like the noise and experimental scene is totally into CDs again and I don't really have an excellent cd player anymore so it's always a surprise if it will play or not, but this one does so me happy.

In een weide staan wat runderen in het late middaglicht. Rechts, in de schaduw bij de knotwilg, liggen wat varkens tevreden in de modder. Potter werd vooral beroemd door De stier, het uitzonderlijk grote schilderij dat zich ook in de collectie van het Mauritshuis bevindt. Dit is een voorbeeld van wat hij gewoonlijk maakte: veestukken op een veel kleiner formaat – heel geschikt om in een burgerhuis aan de muur te hangen.

Sure, it’s too much for any one person to absorb, but still... 

We all know that some combination of easy access to home studio tools, world wide web streaming, social media delirium, legacy record industry collapse, and artistic resistance to creeping authoritarianism has (somewhat paradoxically) unleashed a tidal wave of idiosyncratically great music during the past decade, so it should come as no surprise that such a list as this would contain nearly 300 essential items. Yea, it seems nearly everything gets recorded and released these days (especially the zonked improv/collagist /noise/outer limits realm), but whether or not we listen to such items as frequently as we consumed Exile On Main Street or Cosmic Tones For Mental Therapy back in the day is irrelevant...the time is now, and as far as wild sounds from the outer dimensions goes, now has unprecedented bounty...listen heartily, for tomorrow, who knows?

Pictured below is Bärchen Und Die Milchbubis! They are a band from Hannover, Germany, they released one album and two singles between 1980 and 1982, and now, in 2024, they are touring again! But that's not why I played them in the show, I played them because they are one of the bands that are featured in the fantastic Inner World 033 podcast, by the World Of Echo label, and compiled by the Famous Mammals. It's a three hour long feast of great great music, and I wanted to direct my listeners to this podcast, go listen and enjoy. Pictured below are De Portables, the Belgian band from Bruges that played its very last show last Friday. They existed for about 27 years and have always been a part of my musical life. Unfortunately that last show was on the same day as the first day of the Sonic City festival here in Kortrijk, so I missed it, but I've seen them numerous times in the past and I've always thought that they would be around for ever. There are only a few bands like that, the ones that have been around all your life and that you assume will be there forever. Sonic Youth was one of those bands, The Ex is still one of those bands, The Cure is one of those bands, and De Portables was one of those bands. I'm quite sure that there will be more musical output from the different band members (I mean, for instance, listen to Wio's excellent Disintegration cover album), but still, this is the end of a musical era. And there are not a lot of Belgian bands with the same legacy as De Portables. I already played on of their excellent cover songs in the previous episode, and this time I'm playing the opening and title track of their album "Rosegarden". Thank you for the music!

This whole episode has a post festival vibe, there's only one very loud track, there's a lot of slow long tracks, a few drones, and a bit of krautrock. Pictured below are The Vaselines, the Scottish band with core members Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee. I'm playing their song Son Of A Gun in this episode, long time ago also covered by Nirvana, and that's not the only song that Kurt Cobain covered, there's also Molly's Lips and Jesus Wants Me For A Sumbeam, so I guess the band gained some deserved exposure back then. It's one of those bands that escaped from my attention when they were active in the late eighties, they were short-lived but reunited later as so many bands do and honestly I don't know if they were still any good, but I've put their early work on my want list. Speaking of want list, this episode is a digital one and features some real obscure bands that I downloaded from Bandcamp, still the best site for discovering unknown gems. Pictured below is Claire Mahoney, the woman behind the project Thistle Group, who has just recently collaborated with P. Wits to release a 7" on the I Dischi Del Barone label from Sweden. The 49th release on the label that only releases singles. Both artists are from New-Zealand. Thistle Group until now only released a cassette on 20 copies and a 7" on the Soft Abuse label. P. Wits might be a bit more known thanks to the 7" release on Belgian label Knotwilg Records. And it's an excellent single, maybe one of the highlights in the IDDB catalog. But contrary to what I said in the radio show, the most recent releases on the label were not less interesting to me when I look at the list now. I was under the impression that the last few releases were less appealing to me, but there's releases from Troth, from Eyes Of The Amaryllis, 番長 Taste, and the very last one was the harsh noise banger from Zwangsbeglucktertum, so what the hell was I thinking, seriously. Excellent label, excellent series of singles, buy them all if you can find them. Also, IDDB50 might be the last one, not sure about that, and I would be extremely sad if the label stops, but knowing that in the beginning they were 8 euro and now they are already 12 euro I can understand why it's not exactly rewarding to release singles... You really have to be a total freak like me for buying them and an even more total freak to put your money in such releases. Anyway, it's been quite a ride, so thanks to Matthias for all these wonderful releases.

Pictured below is Rick Froberg, here performing with Drive Like Jehu somewhere in the early nineties. It’s always a pity that I have to write something about someone who passed away unexpectedly at a much too young age. Rick Froberg was 55. That’s only three years older than I am, and he died from natural causes. Froberg was an graphic artist but was mainly known as frontman and guitar player for the bands (in chronological order) Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes, and Obits and only that last one wasn’t with his partner in crime John ‘Swami’ Reis. I’ve seen the last three of those bands live, and I have always been most impressed with Drive Like Jehu, who released only two full length albums, but whose influence cannot be underestimated. It’s their brilliant mixture of melody and dissonance that have influenced fellow nineties bands such as Polvo, Trumans Water, and many more. Drive Like Jehu played in the Pit’s in those early nineties, and the day after they played in a garden in my student home town Leuven, saw them twice and each time left me in amazement. Later I saw Hot Snakes in Ghent, and as encores they played two Drive Like Jehu tracks and in all honesty I can say those two tracks blew the whole Hot Snakes set away. Drive Like Jehu was a brilliant, a brilliant band and I cannot recommend you enough to buy their albums. And when you are 55, you don’t die, ok? Laat ons dat afspreken.

He’s been on the decks already a few times at De Algemene Verwarring, and it all started with his explosive performance at the Knotwilg festival 2019.
