Season 4 Episode 26/ Season 5 Episode 1 Redemption
Worf starts the episode by requesting a leave of absence in order to talk with his brother. With growing tensions within the Klingon Empire he attempts to convince Kurn of the need to support Gowron leveraging his status as the elder of the two, claiming Kurn has to follow him. Meanwhile Picard is handling the proceedings and is about to instate Gowron when the sisters of Duras bring forth Toral, the proclaimed illegitimate son of Duras.
In the interim the two sisters attempt to persuade Picard to accept Toral as a legitimate air, going as far as to make threats on the Federation if he does not instate Toral as the de facto leader. Picard sticks to what he believes is right however claiming that Toral lacks the experience with battles and war that would make him a proper heir. Yet as Gowron is instated a large portion of the council rallies behind Toral. Worf approaches Gowron as the two factions prepare for war, offering his and Kurn's support and manpower if Gowron restores his honor.
Gowron initially refuses to consider the possibility of restoring it but after allies of Duras attack and Kurn arrives to wipe them out he relents and restores Worf's honor. Meanwhile, to allow himself to participate in the conflict, Worf is challenged by Picard who informs him that the Federation cannot get involved. In order to fight for his people Worf resigns from StarFleet so that he can ally himself with Gowron without conflict of interests handling a matter of rebellion. Picard arranges for all of the members of the Enterprise to stand to the sides as Worf takes his leave, thanking him for his service. Meanwhile the sisters of Duras rebuke Picard for his cowardice, till a Romulan bearing a resemblance to Tasha Yar suspects he will be back.
While unable to participate in the war Picard does get the Federation's permission to set up a blockade between the Klingon and Romulan borders using a net like structure to detect any Romulan ships passing through the area. Commander Sela, the Romulan who bears a resemblance to Tasha, reveals herself, claiming to be the daughter of Yar. Guinan informs Picard that Tasha was alive aboard the Enterprise C that travels back to its original time. It is revealed that Tasha became a consort of the Romulans in order to spare the life of the rest of the crew, eventually giving birth to Sela.
While this is going on, Data and Worf have their own struggles. Worf, getting frustrated with the constant infighting over strategy meetings, ends up kidnapped by the Duras sisters. Meanwhile Data has been put in command of the Sutherland but faces pushback from his First-In-Command who does not see Data as a fit commander of a starship. Worf, abducted by the sisters, deals with an attempted seduction and promises of power if he works with them, but rejects them citing the desire to not be beholden to the Romulans.
Picard suggests Gowron wages a full-out assault on Duras's forces, tipping the Romulans hand, making them cross the blockade. Gowron agrees and the sisters of Duras call for help predictably. Sela has her scientists come up with a device to disrupt the technology that would detect the Romulan ships. She disrupts the blockade causing the blockade to reorganize. While she would be able to slip through, Data uses the disruption, ignoring the orders to regroup and firing torpedos in the area where the disruption was detected revealing Sela's ships.
Once revealed Sela is unable to take more resources to the Duras sisters taking things over the edge for Gowron. Worf uses an opportunity to take out his Romulan guards and capture Toral while the sisters escape, essentially ending the conflict. Picard officially estates Gowron as leader of the Klingon and Go wrong grants Toral's life to Worf because of Duras's dishonor of his family. Being just a child, Worf opts to spare Toral's life and asks Picard to rejoin the Enterprise.
This episode is a culmination of several episodes over the last season surrounding the existing Klingon conflict. The second part in particular deals with characters who seem out of place. Data must contend with bias towards him being an Android while Word struggles to adapt to the more aggressive Klingon culture focused on honor and combat. Meanwhile Sela shares her own tragic story as a half Romulan identifying instead with the empire that raised her. Meanwhile, Worf is finally able to get his honor back but chooses to spare Toral. It is about legacy, not taking his right and legacy as a Klingon, symbolically asking to get reinstated back into the Enterprise.

Teal'c,Zeb,Worf all talk about their weapons
Teal'c: Worf what weapon do you have in your hand? Worf: It is called a Bat'Leth it is a traditional weapon wielded by Klingon Warriors. Teal'c: A very interesting design. Worf: What about yours? Teal'c: It's called a Ma'Tok I believe O'Neal describes this as a weapon of terror. What's yours Zeb? Zeb: (Bashful) Ah, this old thing?.. It's a Bo'Rifle. Only the Honor Guard of Lasant can carry it. Worf: It must've been a great honor to serve your people during those trying times Zeb. Zeb: (Becomes Solemn and stares at his Bo'Rifle) Yea... Teal'c: Indeed... (Teal'c pats Zeb's pat in an effort to comfort Zeb) Worf: (Worf noticing he struck a chord with Zeb approached him and placed his hand on his shoulder and stares at Zeb) You carry the honor of your people with pride Zeb. Never forget that.

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Klingon Honor Guard
Original Release: 1998
Developer: MicroProse
Publisher: MicroProse
Platform: PC
Tumblr media
This game is an interesting bit of gaming history: the first game ever released using the Unreal engine, coming out before Unreal itself. It uses a beta version of the engine, so is quite buggy, and the gameplay often feels exactly like Unreal, as it’s a first person shooter that uses a lot of the same code – the movement, some level elements (such at mine carts attached to rails above them) and enemy AI are straight from Unreal.
You play as a new recruit for the Klingon Honor Guard when your training gets interrupted because the Klingon High Council has been bombed, with Gowron injured. Kurn (Worf’s brother, played by Tony Todd) and a Dahar Master send you on a quest to work out who is behind it. Naturally, this involves killing lots of enemies, which mainly consist of Klingons and Andorian pirates.
The graphics are good for the time, although most of the game is dark and full of browns, a lot of the levels merge together. A lot of levels are confusing mazes where you spend most of your time hunting for hard to see keys or buttons to progress. A few standout ones are set on space stations and ships. Because the structure is confined by the outside shape, the layouts make a lot more sense. The game has a lot of levels, and most of them end up merging together.
When not aimlessly walking around, the game is a lot of fun. Stabbing foes with a bat’leth is enjoyable, with lots of colourful blood spraying around (there are no humans in the game so it avoids having red blood). Most of the other weapons are fairly boring, with the exception of a disc weapon which launces a bouncing disc that destroys entire rooms of enemies. You can also find some gadgets to use, such as a deployable camera (never found a use for it) and mag boots, which are vital for going on spacewalks in some levels.
Klingon Honour Guard is fun in parts, but often frustrating. I feel like it goes on a bit too long, with the most enjoyable levels being close to each other in the middle of the game. It also doesn’t really capture the feel of the Star Trek universe. You see Klingons and Andorians, but they don’t really act like them. The main character also repeatedly shouts “I will cut you up like gach” at your foes, which I found odd because Klingons eat them alive, so there’s no cutting up.

Summary:
Adley Benson is a young Data Analyst for Starfleet. She met Jean Luc Picard at 10 Forward three years before this story begins. They began a relationship and now she lives with him at Chateau Picard and works from the vineyard. When Picard gets a distress signal from Beverly Crusher, what happens next for the couple? Picard x OC
Chapter 11
Back on the Titan, Jack’s attempt to take over a member of the bridge crew failed, resulting in the death of Lt. T’Veen.
“We need a new plan,” Kirk began as Reagan began to come to, “Is there any way to take back control of the ship in the next ten minutes?” he questioned as he felt her take his hand in her own.
Picard leaned back against the wall as he brainstormed for a solution.
Reagan sat up in her bed, against Kirk’s wishes, for the second time that day, “What’s going on? Where can we help?”
“You can help by resting,” Kirk responded, “That battle with Vadic’s men took quite a toll on you,” he added before continuing, “You experienced a severe concussion so you are stuck in sickbay for a while, understood?”
Reagan took a deep breath before she replied, “I understand. However, I do have an idea,” she began once she saw she’d grabbed the attention of the others, “We have our own supercomputer on board. It’s time to see if Data can win over Lore and take his body back. If you can get Data back, then he can take control of this ship with ease,” she stated, surprised no one else had thought of it, earning a proud smirk from Kirk.
Picard turned to Beverly, Jack, and Sidney (who’d been attempting to find a way to take back the ship’s controls), “That is not a bad idea, though I’m not sure if Geordi will go for it. Let’s go see if we can make that happen,” he looked at Captain Kirk, “Would you like to join us or stay here with Reagan?”
“I’m going to stay here until she’s cleared to leave and return to action, if that’s alright, Admiral?” Kirk inquired with his superior, even if their ranks based on their time served made no logical sense.
Picard nodded, “That is perfectly fine,” he gestured for Sidney, Jack, and Beverly to follow him to engineering where they would find Geordi and Data/Lore.
After Delaney made her comment about Vadic having control of the Titan, one of the guards returned to the small group.
Before the guard had a chance to say anything, his body was disintegrated before their eyes.
Delaney recognized Worf from her studies at the Academy, but she watched with a hint of delight as Riker and Troi embraced the Klingon.
“One’s personal space is a right,” Worf replied to their affections as the couple released him before Riker introduced Worf to Delaney.
“It is an honor to meet you, Lt. Hale,” Worf replied, “There is something you will want to see before we leave,” he added as he looked at Troi and Riker before he gestured for them to follow him.
The three trailed behind Worf through the halls of the Shrike until they reached what looked like a lab where Raffi was waiting.
Deanna and Delaney were introduced to Raffi before they took a look at the sight before them.
“Jean Luc,” Troi stated, empathetically.
Worf corrected her, “That is not him. It is the version of him that died. According to the records, they are isolating and taking apart the pieces of his brain infected with Iromodic Syndrome,” he shared.
“Why would they want the part of his brain destined to die?” Troi inquired as Raffi shook her head.
“We have no idea, but it has something to do with his son, as well,” Raffi replied, “I think I can download what they have and take it back with us. We can’t stay here any longer. We need to get back to the Titan,” she urged.
Raffi’s words caused a lump to form in Delaney’s throat. She hadn’t seen Liam Shaw since the morning she’d made her quick escape after their one-night stand and she wasn’t sure if he ever wanted to see her again.
While Geordi began working on separating Lore and Data, with the hopes that Data would win, Picard and Jack made their way to turbo lift as their next ten-minute deadline was nearing its end.
Jean Luc handed Jack a device as a contingency. A device that would initiate a forcefield to protect him in the event that they would need to open the airlock on the bridge to get rid of the intruders, even if that was their last choice.
Once the turbo lift doors opened, Jack and Picard were greeted by the sight of Vadic with her phaser aimed at Adley’s head as Picard’s girlfriend sat on her knees, awaiting her fate.
“Ah, Jack,” Vadic began as she backed away from Adley, causing Picard to move to her side and pull her protectively into his arms, “I’m so glad you decided to join.”
Jack shook his head, “You only want me. Let the others go,” he instructed, causing Vadic to wave her hand as she instructed her soldiers to move everyone but Jack into the Ready Room.
Everyone left except Seven, she chose to stand by Jack’s side.
“Are you alright?” Picard questioned Adley once they were behind closed doors, even though they still had a small audience.
Adley nodded as she leaned into his embrace, resting her head against his chest, “I’m ok, thanks to you. Are we going to get out of this one alive, babe?” she asked while attempting to stop her teeth from chattering from the nerves coursing through her body.
Jean Luc placed a kiss on her forehead before he replied, wishing he could comfort her more, “If Jack does what I told him then we’ll be alright. I still wish we knew what they were planning for Frontier Day, though. If we could understand their bigger picture, then this entire situation would be much easier,” he added as she placed her finger to his lips.
“We’ll figure it out,” Adley responded with confidence that she had no right feeling, “As long as we’re together then we can take on anything. That’s what I’ve learned in the years we’ve been together and I can’t wait to see what comes next for us. I know that this isn’t the appropriate time for me to be saying such things, but I want you to know how much I love you, always,” she added as she attempted to stop her lips from curling into a smile.
“Don’t you ever feel guilty regarding our love,” Picard stated before he placed his lips to hers, wondering what was going on aboard the ship surrounding them. Adley gave into his kiss, for a moment before she pulled away. “I have waited my entire life for someone who makes me feel the way you make me feel. Nothing could get between us, and I hope you understand how seriously I take those words,” he added before he placed a chaste kiss on her cheek.
Adley smiled at her boyfriend, ready to call him by a more significant title, “I trust you, baby. Before we came on this mission, I wasn’t sure that I was the person for you, but now I am. I can’t wait to see how our lives evolve when these babies arrive,” she added with a smile as she felt him place his hand on her slightly swollen abdomen, as he’d done a few times previously on their mission.
While Picard and Adley were having their sentimental reunion, Data had won over Lore and taken control of the ship at the same moment when Raffi, Riker, Troi, Worf, and Delaney made their entrance on board.
Raffi glanced at Delaney, “We can handle these soldiers. Why don’t you go to the bridge and see how the hostages are faring?”
Delaney nodded as she made her way to the turbo lift.
When she reached the bridge, she saw a man standing next to Seven of Nine addressing Vadic.
“One of my prisoners has returned,” Vadic interrupted Jack, “Let’s put her with the others,” she instructed as one of her soldiers grabbed Delaney roughly by the shoulder and threw her into the Ready Room with the others.
That’s where she came face-to-face with Captain Liam Shaw, who had clearly taken quite a beating.
Shaw let out a long sigh at the sight of Delaney while Adley was also in the room, “How many of my exes are going to show up on my ship during this mission?”
Delaney let out a small laugh, “I don’t know if you could really call me an ex, Captain,” she stated as she walked toward the man she’d spent the best night of her life with. “You don’t look great,” she added as she reached up and placed her fingers, gingerly, on his injuries.
“Thanks,” Shaw replied, sarcastically. “How did you get tangled up into all of this mess?” he inquired, resisting the urge to close his eyes from the feeling of her fingers on his skin. Shaw loved Adley, but he also loved Delaney and he couldn’t believe that they’d both shown up in the midst of all of this chaos.
Delaney shrugged, “Luck of the draw, I guess. Somehow Vadic knew about our one-night stand and she tortured me for information on your location. I suppose she doesn't understand how a one-night encounter between two people works because I haven’t spoken to you since that night, but she didn’t believe me,” she explained.
Shaw didn’t know if it was the blood loss or if he was feeling bold, but he decided to take a step forward with Lt. Delaney Hale, “Would I be too presumptuous if I asked you to be my girlfriend? I know we need some time to catch up, but I don’t think that’s a good enough reason not to move forward to a more formal title..” he let his words linger, waiting to see what she would say.
Delaney couldn’t stop the smile from creeping across her lips as she responded, “I wouldn’t say no to that proposal. I’d be more than happy to be your girlfriend,” she replied as they were interrupted by the feeling of the ship shaking, beneath their feet.
That didn’t stop them from entering into a passionate kiss that would seal their new relationship status.
Data had taken over the AI body, besting Lore, and he had control of the ship. Luckily, Jack used his device, given to him by Picard, to protect himself and Seven when Data opened the airlock to the bridge and sent Vadic and her men into the cold, depths of space.
Back in sickbay, Kirk was sitting on the edge of Reagan’s bed, while all the events were transpiring around them, including the Titan, finally destroying the Shrike with every weapon they had at their disposal.
“Are all those sounds a good thing or a bad thing?” Reagan questioned as she heard the Titan firing at the Shrike, unaware of what was actually going on, just making a hopeful assumption.
Kirk’s lips curved into a smug grin as he replied, “Those sounds are a very good thing. Our people managed to throw Vadic and her people into space and now we’re destroying her ship. The only thing left for us to do is to stop whatever the Changelings have planned for Frontier Day,” he added as he tentatively placed his hand on top of hers. He was fairly certain that she felt the same way about him that he felt for her, but he couldn’t be one-hundred percent certain.
“James Tiberius Kirk,” Reagan began, “If I didn’t know better, I’d say that you like me. Maybe even as much as I like you. Am I hot or cold with my suspicions?” she inquired while wearing a sly smile on her lips.
Kirk was unable to suppress the light chuckle from escaping his lips, even while they were in these dire circumstances, “I’m not sure how you were able to guess that I liked you too, but you’re right,” he replied, sarcastically, before continuing, “There are a few problems with ‘us’ though. The first one is that you’re far too young for me,” he stated matter-of-factly as if the words leaving his mouth were enough to set that in stone.
“Age is merely a number,” Reagan replied as she sat up and swung her legs off the side of the bed, “Based on your crazy track record, you’re bound to outlive me. Do you have any other more valid reasons for us to stay apart?”
Kirk let out a loud laugh at her logic before he replied, “I don’t suppose I do. So, what does that make us? Are we boyfriend and girlfriend, or not quite there yet?” he questioned as he heard his communicator chirp.
He chose to ignore it for the moment while he awaited Reagan’s response.
“If you’re ready to be exclusive then so am I,” she stated as she moved forward and placed her lips to his. She deepened the kiss, resisting the urge to straddle him because she knew that they were needed, as she broke the kiss and continued, “Are you one-hundred percent sure about being exclusive with me? There are a lot of girls in the galaxy you haven’t even met yet,” she added, with a smirk.
Kirk shook his head as he looked to the ground, his smile reaching his eyes causing his crow's feet to shine through, “I’ve never felt the way I feel for you about anyone so there’s no need for me to scour the galaxy for a better match. You’re it, my one, my everything,” he added, even as cheesy as his words sounded.
Once they resolved their conversation, Kirk answered his comms. Everyone was wanted in the conference room to figure out their next steps.

Plotting Call - Shavona (Stephanie), daughter of Sirella & Martok
The "brains" of the brains & brawn package deal of Martok's daughters, Stephanie is responsible for the design and overall execution of all safety plans for the Trill ambassador to the Klingon Empire, Genevieve. In fact, she was the one to suggest she and her sister take on a guard role following the assassination of Genevieve's good friend and Vulcan ambassador, S'Chn T'Gai Hailey. While Stephanie has had an unfair amount of issues regarding her honor and acceptance in Klingon society, she has always had the support of her family to rally around her, and so felt no problems when Kimmie was accepted into their house, joining her sister Taylor in choosing a secondary, human name that showed how much she would support Kimmie as part of House Martok.
Hit the ❤️ to plot with Stephanie!

Honor and Trust in sci-fi
This is directly inspired by L’Rell’s jailbreak of Admiral Cornwall in Discovery s1e8.
Right from the start I’ll give a small amount of praise: Kol sees through L’Rell’s incredibly clumsy scheme. Maybe not the specifics but he knows she’s up to no good and gives her just enough leeway to tip her hand.
What irks me is that everything L’Rell does from talking her way back onto the Ship of the Dead, to the fake torture, to the botched escape attempt relies upon one of two considerations: either L’Rell is defying the expectations of a rigid, highly etiquette obsessed and honor bound society where it’s almost unthinkable to break the rules (despite the fact she’s related to an entire House known for being spies) or she is assuming that everyone she meets is really dumb.
Now it’s possible this is a Xanatos gambit and L’Rell expected to get busted but still, there are a lot of gambles in this scheme. A lot even for a Star Trek spy ops plot. To the extent that it feels an awful lot like it’s within shouting distance of Obi Wan smuggling Leía out of the Inquisitor base in an oversized trenchcoat except that was at least semi coded as comic relief.
At any point L’Rell could have been executed if not for Kol seemingly being amused or curious to see what L’Rell was up to and how precisely she was going to try to stab him in the back.
I’ve argued, sometimes passionately, for cutting Trek some slack when it comes to “realism” but sometimes the Trek orange juice is too pulpy even for my taste.
This episode in my mind would have worked better if earlier episodes had leaned into and developed the Klingon concept of honor. Established them as a rigidly formal people. If they’re even more hierarchical and legalistic about etiquette and legalism, perhaps even a bit “Dune” like in their behavior, then you maybe get away with telling a story about a Klingon whose superpower is she’s willing to lie to people. But then you’d have to treat her heritage as a deep lore dump a bit on par with the revelation of the Zhat Vash. If everyone knows *that* House is the one known for its spies and assassins, then everyone rightfully should be on guard.
Of course it’s never clear that that is the public reputation of L’Rell’s House, but we aren’t given much context for how to take this revelation when she drops it on Voq as a possible answer to his problems. L’Rell certainly seems bold about declaring her talents for interrogation.
On a meta level, it just seems like someone wanted L’Rell and Cornwall to be involved in the downfall of the Sarcophagus somehow but couldn’t figure out how to make it work without falling back on some very old cliches.
On an unrelated note, the reveal of the body dump where all of T’Kuvma’s other acolytes have been gruesomely slaughtered is a powerful argument against graphic gore and violence in this show. Not just because it’s unnecessary and makes it less family friendly (I grew up watching TNG and it made a powerful impression on me, I couldn’t imagine watching Discovery or Picard with kids) but because the props were really, really bad. I know sometimes writers and prop makers are on a tight deadline and you get B stories that don’t really work and mannequins that are obviously mannequins, but c’mon. This smacks of having to compromise between deadlines and quality which is supposed to be a legacy of network tv, the compressed seasons and the fact that the show will be accessible to viewers forever (maybe) is supposed to eliminate that particular false dilemma. Right? Sigh.
At least the A side plot kind of was a stern reminder about why the Federation doesn’t drag third parties into its problems.

Weekend Top Ten #596
Top Ten Ideas for Star Trek Videogames
So Star Trek. It’s alright, innit? The slower, more cerebral sci-fi show, for Grown Ups who like Talking About Things. As opposed to Star Wars’ sugar rush of wacky aliens and loud weapons. It’s kind of weird now, when both franchises really feel just like stretched-out shared-universe TV serials, but Back In The Day, Star Wars was the exciting, cool movie series, and Star Trek was the serious, nerdy TV series. Everybody could drop a reference to the Death Star or Princess Leia or maybe even a wampa, and basically you were on safe ground. Start talking about dilithium crystals or bat’leths or the Grand Nagus, and people would back away slowly. Nowadays, simultaneously we have a situation where genre TV is all-encompassing, but also its more granular nuances of lore and nerdery are sort of kept to a minimum.
Back in the days of the Wars of Star, though, one way the hyperdrive people had more bragging rights than the warp drive people is through videogames. The nineties were, in a lot of ways, the Golden Age of both properties, and Star Wars excelled in producing some of the greatest of all licenced games. The X-Wing and TIE Fighter space combat games; the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight FPS games; the Rogue Squadron arcade shooter games. They probably reached their zenith with Knights of the Old Republic; since then, there have been good games, but I don’t think anything has shaken the galaxy in the same way. Star Trek, on the other hand, definitely had some great games – shout out to both Klingon Honor Guard and Voyager: Elite Force for being more unusual FPS titles and just generally terrific fun – but it’s hard to think of one that really broke through the way most Star Wars games did. I think because of the more cerebral, slower-paced nature of Trek, a lot of the games fed the fanbase in very specific ways, giving us complex simulations and interactive movies that went deep on the lore and the technobabble.
Anyway, despite the many Trek games on offer, I think nowadays there are some gaps in the market. So, despite my woeful ignorance of the depths that videogame Trek has to offer (I Googled it when writing this thing and there are tons more games in that franchise than I first thought), I’m going to offer my suggestions here. Ideas for games that scratch a particular itch in Trek fandom; areas of the franchise that would translate perfectly to different genres.
And that’s really all there is to it. What more do want from me? I’ve had a busy week.
Tumblr media
Star Trek does Mass Effect: after making an official Star Wars RPG with Knights of the Old Republic, BioWare made an original property that clearly owes a debt to Star Trek: Mass Effect. But there’s something in its formula that would perfectly fit an official adaptation. Let’s say you play the First Officer of a starship; during the game you can select your team to go down to planets on away missions, talking to people, solving problems, and occasionally engaging in firefights. Meanwhile you get to walk around the ship, visiting various sections and chatting to the crew. It could be a great mix of discrete “levels” set on planets, with an overarching storyline that allowed for some evolving, emergent gameplay. And maybe there could be a little hidden emote that allows you to sit on a chair like William Riker.
Star Trek does X-COM: there was already an Away Team game, where you played as, well, an away team out on missions, but I think that concept lends itself to a turn-based X-COM style of gameplay. This would most definitely be a tactical combat game, where you have to position your squad behind the usual helpfully-placed crates and boulders to fire your phasers at whatever Cardassian/Romulan/Borg baddie you were facing off with this time. The usual Trek staple of different classes of character – engineers, commanders, etc – would lend a good dose of variety to your squad, as would the nuance of tinkering with your phaser settings and the option of beaming out if things got too tough.
Star Trek does Pandemic: Pandemic is a game where the aim is to spread a virus across the globe, wiping out all of humanity before they can develop a cure. This idea isn’t exactly the same, but what about a tactical game where you play as the Borg? The aim of the game is to assimilate the entire Galaxy. Perhaps the galactic map could be divided into different “powers” – eg Federation space, Romulan, Klingon, etc – and they might have different ways of tackling the Borg, and so you’re dividing time and resources between different tactics. The ultimate goal, though, is to conquer everything and make it all part of the Collective. Resistance is futile, remember!
Star Trek does Gone Home: I’m not necessarily riffing on Gone Home in particular here, but it’s more about those slightly spooky “walking simulators”; things like Dear Esther too. So here you’d have essentially an interactive version of one of those episodes where a member of the crew returns to the ship and discovers that Everything is Different. Here, basically, the plot is that you return from, I dunno, a Bat’leth tournament or a stellar cartography conference or something, to find your starship is utterly deserted. Only by wandering the dimly-lit corridors, speaking to the computer, solving clues, scanning with your tricorder, etc, can you piece together the puzzle and find out what happened. It would be creepy and kooky to begin with, but being Star Trek there’d be a pseudo-scientific explanation.
Star Trek does Superhot: you could definitely argue that the most compelling aspect of Superhot is its trippy time mechanics, with time only moving if you move. But this game would be more in the line of how Superhot plays, meta-textually, with the notion of being a game. You play a person playing the game, and the game in the game turns hostile. So this would be like a recreation of one of the numerous “holodeck goes wrong” episodes (seriously, the holodeck is the most dangerous piece of technology in all of science fiction). So you’d be playing the game, going through different puzzles and scenarios, trying to uncover the real game so you can escape. And the “real” bits, where you’re breaking down the “fake” game, could be rendered in a more stylised, Superhot-esque fashion; although with the old school yellow and black grid as a background.
Star Trek does Sim City: Sim City might not be the best example, but the general gist is you’re establishing one of the many-referenced Federation colonies. So you have to go out and tame the wilderness, making atmospheres breathable, building different buildings to regulate water or harvest local minerals. There could be a campaign where you’re tasked with running different colonies for different reasons – mining dilithium, setting up a research centre, etc – or a sandbox mode where you just basically cover a planet with your futuristic colony.
Star Trek does Startopia: shrinking things down a little bit more we have this, basically a Deep Space Nine simulator. You’re given a run-down starbase to manage, Sisko-style, and have to turn it into a bustling galactic hive. Yes, you can specialise in military or scientific research, or spy on the Cardassians or something; maybe you can even start churning out Galaxy-class starships. But you could also make it a home, creating shops and restaurants, living quarters, schools (watch out for Bajoran extremists!); basically, create the outpost of your dreams. Even open a branch of Quark’s!
Star Trek does Overcooked: speaking of Quark’s, this game would double-down on that setting, where you play another distant relative of everyone’s favourite duplicitous bar-owner, who’s been given the job of running a franchise. So here you not only need to make sure your dabo tables are turning in a profit and that there are adequate, er, stimulations in the holosuites, but also that you’re serving your customers. So you run from one job to the next, throwing drinks at grumpy Irish engineers and occasionally shouting “allamaraine”. And if you cock up a drink order or your racht dies before anyone has chance to eat it, Quark comes in and tweaks your ears.
Star Trek does Elite: really, this one seems kind of obvious, and I’m not certain that they’ve not actually done a version of it. But you’d play an independent pilot – maybe like Rios from Picard – who has a small ship, ferrying cargo or passengers. And, like the galaxy’s most famous space-sim, you can upgrade your ship as you progress, buying a bigger boat to take more cargo. And you can play it by the book – dealing with the Federation would mean protection, access to advanced technology, but also an inability to make profit in a society where money doesn’t really exist anymore – or you can go rogue, smuggling contraband to shady individuals around the Alpha Quadrant. Maybe you could even become a space pirate! Steal a cloaking device from a derelict Klingon cruiser, buy a couple of black market quantum torpedoes, and away you go!
Star Trek does Arkham Asylum: so the Arkham reference here is that this would be a third-person action adventure game focused on physical combat and exploration, but you’d play as a Klingon. Sent off on high-risk missions by the Chancellor, you’d visit far-flung planets, investigate mysteries, and beat up just tons of people. Expand your abilities, augment your tech, and buy a bigger Bat’leth, learning all kinds of vicious fighting techniques. Like Klingon Honor Guard of yore, the focus on Star Trek’s knobbly space Vikings means it can revel in the blood and the guts, swigging blood wine and deciding that today is a good day to die. Qapla'!
Sadly no room for a Pokémon-style Tribbles game, but ah well.
