Mumbai University conducts first online viva for an engineering student, more to follow - Times of India

MUMBAI: Rupali Patil, a student of electronics and telecommunication engineering, was very happy to be addressed as Dr Rupali Patil on Wednesday. Patil was the first Mumbai University student to be conferred the doctorate degree in an online open defence viva during the lockdown, which disrupted the teaching-learning process in the city.

While she was a university student, she was registered at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, her resource centre. She defended her Ph D thesis before external examiners from IIT-Bombay and Jondhale College of Engineering online on Wednesday. “I had not expected to have the viva on an online platform. But it went smooth. I was asked around 12-14 questions by the external examiners. It went on for a good one and a half hours,” said Patil, while talking to TOI. Her research on ‘Documented Signal Retrieval and Identification’ can help in various areas including weather forecasting. She had first registered for the Ph D in 2014 and had Ramesh Karandikar, from KJ Somaiya College of Engineering, as her guide.

The university followed all the UGC guidelines to plan the online viva. It now has vivas for eight subjects in science and technology and four subjects in anthropology in the next few days in the pipeline.
