He feels lightheaded, his wing's light dimming, and he falls, squeaking, and Gon turns around and catches him.

“Killua!”

The ground feels burning beneath his feet, and Gon scoops him up before he can complain.

“You know, princess, if you wanted attention, all you had to do was ask.”

Killua humphs, sticking his nose up in the air, and he snuggles against Gon’s chest, resting his small fists there.

“You’re on the nice list, isn’t that right, Gon?”

Gon smiles and nods, looking down at Killua who stares with wide eyes.

“Y-You’re lying.”

The Santa simply gives a smile and rummages through his bag.

“Ho, ho, ho, I do not lie! I know all!”

Killua puffs out his cheeks, and Santa turns back around, holding out a stuffed white teddy bear with a pink bow.

Gon glances to catch a glimpse of Killua’s face; his mouth is open, and his eyes seem to sparkle. It’s the cutest sight Gon’s ever seen.

His fingers twitch, but he keeps them around Gon’s neck.

Gon keeps hold of his hand, gently smiling and brushing some snow off Killua’s nose, ensuring he’s okay.

Gon turns fully, rubbing the back of his neck.

It’s not real! It’s not! He squeezes his eyes tight until he feels calloused fingers gently take his hands, lowering them from his burning ears. Killua opens his eyes slowly, only to find Gon on the floor, kneeling, beaming.

“I solemnly vow to protect you!”

Killua grows more flustered, shaking his head.

Killua squeaks, and Gon’s act almost falls apart with how cute it is, quickly bumbling his way through. Just to seal the deal…

This isn’t what Killua is used to.

He isn’t sure how to feel. There’s a furrow to his brow as he walks down the steps, playing with the edges of his pink pleated skirt. He taps his foot on the last stair anxiously.

Shouldn’t they be racing out the door already…?

Is Gon… mad at him…?

“Come on, Killua!”

He doesn’t know how to approach it, chewing on his lower lip, turning the pale pink of it red.

He takes the final step down gracefully, swallowing a lump in his throat.

Gon opens the door for him, and Killua steps outside, inhaling the fresh breeze of the island. Gon closes the door, humming a tune as he hops down the steps.

Killua has to breach it now. If he doesn’t… he curls his fingers up into his turtleneck, tugging at the fabric and opening his mouth.

“Aren’t we going to race…?”

Gon turns to him cocking his head, smiling.

“Nope! Not today.”

Why not…?

Killua can feel the frustration and anxiety growing as he purses his lips together, taking a step forward.

Gon holds out his hand, and Killua stares dumbfounded.

Gon jerks his head toward the dirt path, gesturing at Killua to take his hand, and Killua reaches out, pausing, gently placing his hand in Gon’s palm.

Gon’s hand is warm; he can feel the rough calluses against Gon’s palm as Gon’s fingers gently but firmly wrap around his hand, and Killua takes the rest of the steps down, his face flushed and heart pounding.

Gon lets go of his hand once he’s on solid ground, and Killua is left staring at his own hand, pale scars shone in the bright sunlight as he drops it to his side, fingertips brushing against the edge of his skirt.

Maybe Gon is sick… or perhaps Killua is…

He’s sure it’s nothing.

What’s with Gon today…?

He’s not acting normal… Gon’s always nice, but…

“Here!”

Gon hands him a stick with little chocolate bunnies and stars from the stand, and Killua takes it gingerly. He wants to squeal because of chocolate, but why is Gon buying him all this stuff… and…

He takes a bite of one of the chocolate marshmallows but can’t enjoy its sweet taste.

“Gon.”

“Hmm?”

Gon turns to look at him, unknowingly, with that dumb grin on his face.

“W-what’s with you today…? Are you… mad at me…?”

He swallows the last of the marshmallow, but it just leaves a bad taste in his mouth as he scrunches his fingers up in his skirt, staring at the edge of the skewer and the cute chocolate bunny.

Tears prick his eyes, and he grips tighter until his knuckles turn pure white.

No one’s ever this nice to him. Not without reason…

But the thought of Gon being mad at him…

It hurts a lot more than any of his family being mad…

His chest aches so much…

“Killua?”

Gon says his name so concerned, but he refuses to look up.

“Of course not! Sorry…! Maybe I’m not as good at this date thing as I thought…”

Gon trails off, and Killua snaps his head up so fast he almost gives himself whiplash, big blue eyes wide, some tears slipping past, his lips parting.

D-date…?

W-w-what?

It isn’t just the sun burning down on his skin; he feels hot, dizzy, and sick, and he takes a shaky step forward and trips all over himself.

“Woah!”

He can hear Gon’s voice clearly from the side as he wraps his arms around Killua’s waist catching him.

Killua’s world goes blurry for a moment; he can’t hear anything, blood roaring in his ears, only the distant sounds of cicadas joining them; his arms are wrapped around Gon’s neck, his knees bent slightly.

“Killua? You okay?”

Killua snaps back with a gasp, peering up into Gon’s warm honey-colored eyes, brimming with concern.

A pale, pretty pink flushes against Killua’s skin from the tips of his ears to the small flesh of skin that his turtleneck hides.

W-w-what? D-d-date?

Gon, you idiot!

“I-I, you can’t just not tell you, y-you idiot!”

Gon’s mouth falls open in shock, and then he closes it, his eyebrows scrunching together.

“Oh. Sorry, Killua.” He laughs apologetically.

“So does that mean I’m not doing a terrible job…?” He adds with a grin.

Killua wraps his arms closer around Gon’s neck, looking to the side. Gon is so warm… he feels… safe here…

“…I-I… guess… you aren’t…”

He mumbles, and Gon's grin keeps getting wider.

Gon slowly removes his hands from Killua’s waist, and Killua feels like a stray kitten pulling his arms back, pouting.

“Okay! Then I’ll make it even better!”

Gon starts to march forward, and Killua’s heart twists, and he rushes forward, almost running into Gon’s back, tentatively grabbing Gon’s sleeve, his cheeks puffed out.

If this is a date, shouldn’t you hold his hand? Stupid Gon!

He can feel Gon’s gaze on him, it’s warmer than the sun, and Gon holds his hand out, and Killua stares at it shyly, reaching forward and linking their pinkies together.

He can somehow hear Gon’s smile.

Seeing Killua happy makes Gon’s heart feel full, fuller than even Aunt Mito’s cooking made his stomach! Killua’s pouting was so cute Gon swears his heart skipped a beat, but seeing Killua smile, so genuinely and happy with his guard down…

Best feeling ever!

This was the big finale, though!

Killua is sitting on the edge of the wall, swinging his legs back and forth, and Gon sits beside him, holding something, and Killua looks over and tilts his head.

“It’s for you!”

Gon’s heart has never dropped so fast as tears well up in Killua’s eyes.

Killua gently takes the small pink cat plush from Gon, playing with the bow around its neck.

“I-It’s for me?”

Gon swallows thickly, nodding, grinning.

“Yep!“

Killua hugs it close, and the tension starts to ease in Gon’s chest, although his heart breaks more, thinking of why Killua would be so scared of a gift.

“T-thank you…”

Killua leans his head against Gon’s shoulder, wrapping his free arm around Gon’s bicep and Gon’s face heats up as he peers down at Killua’s face. C-cute!

Gon kicks his legs against the brick wall excitedly.

He knows, then. He’d do anything to protect Killua and his smile.
