My absolute favorite part of going through texts is when they say "alum is found in a variety of locations in the Mediterranean but Egyptian alum was highly sought after in the ancient world." A thousand questions explode in my mind~ Where! When! How?! Why?! I'm on the second page!! Tell me more!!
"Its value is underscored by the famous historical episode of the thousand talents of alum that were offered by Amasis, together with the rights to twenty alum mines sent by Greeks living in Egypt, in order to restore the temple of Delphi after its destruction in 548 BC (Herodotus 2.180)."
THAT'S SO FUCKING COOL.
"Extraction of alum in Egypt from Kharga went well into the later part of the nineteenth century, after which its mining became less lucrative with the advent of synthetically produced alum." (?!) (is this referring to the aluminum bayer process...?)

friends who are in the seattle area, or have a seattle public library library card, on palestine by noam chomsky + ilan pappé, palestine: a four thousand year history by nur masalha, the ethnic cleansing of palestine by ilan pappé, and freedom is a constant struggle: ferguson, palestine, and the foundations of a movement by angela y. davis have been added to "always available audio" on libby so there's no longer a hold for these audiobooks!

Here is a first installment of a Wild/Time series, written by…..someone. If anyone’s interested. May or may not be written by me, idk.
May not be updated in chronological order, but I wanted to get this started.

so uh...did you answer your friend's question because i want to know why too
haha yeah i did! so im going based off of the salt we consume the most of which is sodium but you have to remember that we consume it as sodium chloride, not sodium alone. so our body doesn’t react to it because it’s never unbound. sodium is always in a bound or transition state within our body. also, the sodium we’ve seen react with water is pure sodium and it’s usually lab made to begin with!!
