Google announces restructuring to accelerate AI initiatives
.pp-multiple-authors-boxes-wrapper display:none; img width:100%;
Google CEO Sundar Pichai has announced a series of structural changes and leadership appointments aimed at accelerating the company’s AI initiatives.
The restructuring sees the Gemini app team, led by Sissie Hsiao, joining Google DeepMind under the leadership of Demis Hassabis.
“Bringing the teams closer together will improve feedback loops, enable fast deployment of our new models in the Gemini app, make our post-training work proceed more efficiently and build on our great product momentum,” Pichai explained.
Additionally, the Assistant teams focusing on devices and home experiences will be integrated into the Platforms & Devices division. This reorganisation aims to align these teams more closely with the product surfaces they are developing for and consolidate AI smart home initiatives at Google under one umbrella.
Prabhakar Raghavan, a 12-year Google veteran, will transition from his current role to become the Chief Technologist at Google. Pichai praised Raghavan’s contributions, highlighting his leadership across various divisions including Research, Workspace, Ads, and Knowledge & Information (K&I).
“Prabhakar’s leadership journey at Google has been remarkable,” Pichai noted. “He led the Gmail team in launching Smart Reply and Smart Compose as early examples of using AI to improve products, and took Gmail and Drive past one billion users.”
Taking the helm of the K&I division will be Nick Fox, a long-standing Googler and member of Raghavan’s leadership team. Fox’s appointment as SVP of K&I comes on the back of his extensive experience across various facets of the company, including Product and Design in Search and Assistant, as well as Shopping, Travel, and Payments products.
“Nick has been instrumental in shaping Google’s AI product roadmap and collaborating closely with Prabhakar and his leadership team on K&I’s strategy,” comments Pichai. “I frequently turn to Nick to tackle our most challenging product questions and he consistently delivers progress with tenacity, speed, and optimism.”
The restructuring comes amid a flurry of AI-driven innovations across Google’s product lineup. Recent developments include the viral success of NotebookLM with Audio Overviews, enhancements to information discovery in Search and Lens, the launch of a revamped Google Shopping platform tailored for the AI era, advancements like AlphaProteo that could revolutionise protein design, and updates to the Gemini family of models.
Pichai also highlighted a significant milestone in Google’s healthcare AI initiatives, revealing that their AI system for detecting diabetic retinopathy has conducted 600,000 screenings to date. The company plans to expand access to this technology across India and Thailand.
“AI moves faster than any technology before it. To keep increasing the pace of progress, we’ve been making shifts to simplify our structures along the way,” Pichai explained.

Tribute 822
Appreciation 822 for the actors who changed characters Kudos to those who have made their mark by acting in various roles in all languages. There is no other person I would like to admire today. In the Kannada film world, he is the talented actor late Musiri Krishnamurthy, who acted with many leading actors and came from the theater world. Villain, comedy, character and various roles. He is very popular as an actor. I have seen many of his films from February 1983-1993. It is no exaggeration to say that actor Dinesh acted together and was talked about as equal to Hollywood actors Laurel and Hardy. The languages may be different, but the acting is the same. It is not surprising if both his sons follow their father's profession. One son works in the direction department and another son works as a cinematographer. He is a family of sons. I wish them to be healthy, to achieve more achievements like their father and to win many awards like him. K. Raghavan 17-6-24 See you again next week

Gluing soft materials without glue
Science News from research organizations 1 2 Date: May 3, 2023 Source: American Chemical Society Summary: If you’re a fan of arts and crafts, you’re likely familiar with the messy, sticky, frustration-inducing nature of liquid glues. Share: advertisement FULL STORY If you’re a fan of arts and crafts, you’re likely familiar with the messy, sticky, frustration-inducing nature of liquid glues. But researchers reporting in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces now have a brand-new way to weld squishy stuff together without the need for glue at all. They’ve demonstrated a universal, “electroadhesion” technique that can adhere soft materials to each other just by running electricity through them. There’s a glue out there for almost any situation, whether it involves plastic, fabric, wood or beyond. But things get a bit tricky when materials are soft and squishy, like tissues or engineered organs. Strategies including 3D-printing avoid glues altogether by fusing together an entire structure — such as an organ — all at once. But this can be slow and laborious, and require advanced technical equipment. Another alternative could be electroadhesion, in which an electric field is used to hold oppositely charged materials together, forming attachments between the materials’ components. This can involve chemical bonds, like ionic bonds, or more physical connections, like ensnaring polymer chains together. Plus, it works with little more than a household battery and pencil lead. Previously, Srinivasa Raghavan and colleagues showed that electroadhesion could reversibly hold a gel to a tissue without the need for sutures. But now, they wanted to see if the technique could work for any two materials, given that they had opposite charges, to precisely and reversibly hold them together. To explore the phenomenon, the team tested a gel in addition to three types of capsules made of alginate or chitosan — both naturally occurring polymers — that were either positively or negatively charged. When attached to graphite electrodes and exposed to a 10-V electric field for around 10 seconds, the oppositely charged materials stuck together. This bond was strong enough to withstand gravity, and evidence from previous experiments suggests it could last for years. By reversing the flow of electricity, however, the bond was easily broken. The team assembled chains and even 3D cubes out of individual, spherical capsules. The researchers also used electroadhesion to sort capsules by their charges, either by laying a charged gel on top of several capsules, or by touching them with a fingertip “robot” that adhered the capsules to themselves. The researchers say that this work demonstrates the universality of electroadhesion and could one day be used in robotics and tissue engineering. More Than 1 in 3 Men Admit to Raping or Abusing Women
Earlier I made a post about how many men will openly admit to abusing or raping women.
This post expands on that by looking at a few specific publications from that post and introducing some other publications on the same issue.
First, a study examined multiple sites in East and Southeast Asia, and, uniquely, aggregated the data across sites (Fulu, 2013):
33% of men admit to perpetrating physical intimate partner violence (IPV)
46% of men admit to perpetrating either physical or sexual IPV, or both
53% of men admit to perpetrating at least one emotionally abusive act; 30% admit to at least three different acts
34% of men admit to perpetrating economic IPV
24% of men admit to perpetrating rape against a partner
11% of men admit to perpetrating rape against a non-partner
4% of men admit to perpetrating gang rape
Of the men who admitted to committing any type of rape, 58% admitted to perpetrating rape more than once and 33% admitted to more than one victim
67% of the men who committed rape faced no legal consequences
14-52% of men said had transactional sex at least once
Second, a study examined multiple countries in the Middle East and North Africa. The data was not aggregated across country, so the range of responses is provided (UN Women, 2017):
10-45% of men admit to perpetrating physical IPV
20-80% of men admit to perpetrating emotional IPV
31-64% of men admit to perpetrating street-based sexual harassment; in addition, more educated men were more likely to admit to having sexually harassed a woman, and more educated women were more likely to have experienced sexual harassment
Third, a study examined multiple countries from around the world (Brazil, Chile, Croatia, India, Mexico and Rwanda). The data was not aggregated across country, so the range of responses is provided (Barker et al., n.d.):
25-40% of men admit to perpetrating physical IPV
6-29% of men admit to perpetrating sexual violence against women and girls
16-56% of men said they had transactional sex at least once
Fourth, smaller studies provide data from a range of different countries:
28% of men in South Africa admit to having ever raped a woman; many perpetrated rape more than once; 2% admitted to perpetrating gang rape; more than 30% faced no consequences and over 80% faced no legal consequences (Jewkes et al., 2011)
46% of male undergraduate students in the USA admit to perpetrating  some form of sexual coercion (Young et al., 2017)
Finally, some studies with related data:
13% of men in the UK admit to perpetrating sexual violence over the past twelve months; importantly, this figure is not comparable to the lifetime prevalence estimates given above (Hales & Gannon, 2021)
35% of male undergraduate students in the USA reported some likelihood of committing rape, in a review of earlier studies (Malamuth, 1981)
The wording of these studies is crucial, as some men will endorse behaviorally descriptive items, but reject labeling items - where the word rape is used (Edwards et al., 2014); these differences may explain at least part of the reported victimization-perpetration gap (Kolivas & Gross, 2007)
In addition, these studies all used self-report measures (asking men if they committed particular violent acts). Therefore, the reported prevalence is likely based on (1) the true prevalence rate and (2) the social acceptability of that form of violence. Some estimates may therefore be much lower than the true prevalence rates.
