In the SB Nation 2021 Mock Draft, the Baltimore Beatdown staff came to the decision to select Terrace Marshall Jr., WR, LSU with the 27th overall pick. This would mark the second straight year the Ravens used a first round pick to dip into the talent pool that took the world by storm in 2019 when LSU went one of the more memorable collegiate championship runs in recent history.
Joining Patrick Queen in Baltimore, Marshall brings height, speed and spice. Marshall racked up 23 touchdowns in his final 19 games for LSU. His final 10, which came across seven games in 2020, might be the most impressive.
Considering that LSU had 13 players drafted following their 2019-20 National Championship, the cupboard was left barren. That doesn’t include Ja’Marr Chase, who opted out ahead of the 2020 season and seems primed to be one of the first players selected in this year’s draft. Marshall rose to the occasion and averaged 100 yards and a touchdown per game while playing an all SEC schedule
Marshall’s production was also impressive considering the drop-off in quarterback play from Joe Burrow to a platoon of inconsistent and erratic passers. LSU also lost whiz kid offensive coordinator Joe Brady, who orchestrated one of the most efficient offenses in college football history before joining the Carolina Panthers in the same position this past year.
Marshall played primarily on the boundary (73.9% of 2019 snaps) during LSU’s championship run. Aligning in a variety of splits, he demonstrated explosive downfield speed in his release paired with strong deep ball tracking and a considerable catch radius. He wins in contested situations with his height, 40-inch vertical and by adjusting to the ball at the catch point over defenders.

That was the majority of Marshall’s workload in 2019. In 2020, Marshall kicked inside to replace Justin Jefferson. 76% of Marshall’s 2020 snaps came from the slot, where he demonstrated pace variation and burst to separate over the middle of the field. Marshall also showed his dynamic speed after the catch, where he was rarely tackled once he found a seam and stepped on the accelerator.
Some variation and burst to win and get in the end zone. This looks professional. pic.twitter.com/ECxUwpjAwY

This is what a first round receiver should look like. Pace variation to cause flat footed DB ✅ Physical at the stem to establish leverage ✅ Secures the catch cleanly ✅ Hits the jets ‼️‼️ pic.twitter.com/22b2Etn31I

Has legitimate speed in his release. Propels himself with a clean push off that would rarely garner a flag. Tracks and gets two feet down. He’s an extremely legit deep threat who can make contested catches deep. pic.twitter.com/sD89BLhNVj

Reflecting on Marshall’s past two seasons, he’s shown that he can function inside or outside at a high level. This should allow him to be relatively scheme versatile, and a chess piece who can be moved around the find the best matchup. In 2020, the former Tiger also showed a knack for reading and finding throwing windows against zone coverage, which the Ravens see more of than any team in the NFL due to Lamar Jackson’s lethal mobility.
Marshall’s game isn’t all rainbows and sunshine, however. While “stiff” may be too strong of a word to describe Marshall’s lateral breaks, his speed cuts require rounding. He doesn’t quite sink his hips in and out of breaks the way elite route runners like Elijah Moore can, unable to flatten and work back to the ball without wasting motion.
Marshall relies more on pace variation to mask his shortcoming, where he approaches his stem under control, then accelerates out of his break to create separation. More technically sound defensive backs in the NFL will be able to disrupt Marshall’s stems as he can’t threaten sharp angles at full speed consistently.
Additionally, reports of medical concerns at the NFL Combine have surfaced.
Interesting. @MoveTheSticks says on a conference call that some medical issues “popped” for LSU receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. at the medical combine in Indianapolis. Marshall missed time in high school and college with foot and leg injuries that required surgery.
— Jonas Shaffer (@jonas_shaffer) April 21, 2021
Marshall missed three games in 2019, but returned to form and played well in 2020 to follow. Baltimore was unbothered by injury risk in 2019 when they made Marquise Brown the first receiver off the board despite having two screws inserted into his foot ahead of the draft.
Another area of concern is that simply put, Marshall drops passes. All receivers drop passes, but Marshall drops more than you’d like to see out of a first-round receiver. Pro Football Focus tagged Marshall with seven drops on 55 catchable passes in 2020. The drops seem to be of the classic “running before the catch” variety.
Nice hands, feet. pic.twitter.com/xNd4O2YlnR

— Spencer N. Schultz (@ravens4dummies) April 25, 2021
Finally, receivers aren’t drafted to block, but in Baltimore’s offense, they will have to. Marshall, on his best days, is an average blocker. In space he consistently stops moving his feet, allows his man a runway to gain momentum and gives up his chest. His effort and technique seemed miles better in 2019, when LSU was a more competitive team overall.
He brings that weak weak too often in the run game. Consistently misses angles and lets DBs blow up run plays. Ravens would hound him to improve, ha ha ha. pic.twitter.com/BYla8njHsI
— Spencer N. Schultz (@ravens4dummies) April 25, 2021
Again WEAK. Doesn’t cut the distance or engage. Gives defenders a runway and gets blown up. Unacceptable. pic.twitter.com/ngwQR4QOxd
— Spencer N. Schultz (@ravens4dummies) April 25, 2021
Unsurprisingly, the former five-star recruit lit up LSU’s pro day, earning the third highest Relative Athletic Score in the 2021 receiver class behind only Ja’Marr Chase and Jacob Harris.
Terrace Marshall Jr. RAS
Marshall stamped his height, explosiveness and speed. His RAS does come with an asterisk, as he didn’t test for agility, which leads me to believe that his inability to sink his hips would’ve shown up in the 3-cone or short shuttle. Marshall’s athletic testing profile is remarkably similar to Jaguars receiver and another former LSU Tiger, D.J. Chark.
DJ Chark RAS
If Marshall can become remotely as successful as Chark, the Ravens would hit a home run with this pick. Baltimore has lacked a dynamic receiver with a large catch radius since the Anquan Boldin days of old. While Marshall isn’t overly physical, he possesses a large catch radius and consistently creates late separation by subtly pushing off. He would become perhaps Baltimore’s best contested catch target, as he brought down 25 contested catches on 41 such targets over the past two years according to Pro Football Focus.
Terrace Marshall Jr.: 59.5 career contested catch % Best in the 2021 NFL Draft pic.twitter.com/Wa6y9GUnDl
— PFF (@PFF) April 22, 2021
Drops and a lack of run blocking effort/ability might grow frustrating for the young receiver, who is still only 20 years old. As the Ravens have seen with Miles Boykin, when receivers are given a small target share and struggle to be effective in the passing game, problems can compound.
Marshall would bring a more diverse skill set than Boykin, as he’s able to work in the slot and possesses substantially more speed after the catch. Boykin also only has two more years on his contract, which could make him dispensable if Marshall were to come in and provide an upgrade.
Drafting Marshall would give the Ravens a full, diverse receiver room for the first time in years. Marquise Brown, Sammy Watkins, Miles Boykin, Devin Duvernay and James Proche would allow for depth at both boundary positions as well as the slot, while bringing very different body types and skill sets. Marshall also steps his game up in the red zone, which could provide a lethal pairing alongside Mark Andrews and Marquise Brown, who have both done considerable damage in that area to this point in their respective careers.
Terrace Marshall Jr. didn't drop a single pass in the redzone at LSU (25 targets) pic.twitter.com/12FisbwNZ6
— PFF Draft (@PFF_College) April 18, 2021
Baltimore’s new wide receivers coach and pass-game specialist, Tee Martin and Keith Williams, would certainly be ecstatic to see a specimen like Terrace Marshall Jr. in Baltimore. While he does need sharpening in certain areas, Marshall possesses size, explosive movement skills and a strong production resume.
If Marshall is able to manage his drops while continuing to develop strength in his 6’3, 205-pound frame, he provides Lamar Jackson with a rare combination of explosive speed and juice after the catch. With almost 33-inch arms, Marshall can reel in deep balls and continue to hone in on his contested catch prowess. Yet another red zone weapon, Marshall has potential to be more of the “true No. 1” that Ravens fans have clamored for with just a smidge of development over the next two years.
With only two years remaining on Miles Boykin and Marquise Brown’s contracts, Marshall could become the featured piece in Year 3, allowing the Ravens flexibility in free agency/roster construction down the road.
Top prospects remaining:
Travis Etienne, RB, Clemson
Kadarius Toney, WR, Florida
Gregory Rousseau, EDGE, Miami
Greg Newsome Jr., CB, Northwestern
Nick Bolton, ILB, Missouri

Thoughts : Gemini Man (2019)
Upon reflection, the career of Will Smith has truly been a remarkable one. Most would have been content with starting a music career in 1985, winning the first rap Grammy, and headlining the cast of the wildly successful Fresh Prince of Bel-Air TV show. For Smith, however, that was just the beginning. He has gone on to achieve icon status by stacking a 25 year movie career on top of the previously mentioned achievements, and the multitude of acting roles over this time has covered a wide spectrum. Perhaps it’s that iconic status and the memories of such a long career that make the film Gemini Man so intriguing... or better yet, if one Will Smith is box office gold, what would happen if a second Will Smith was added to the mix?
DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) assassin Henry Brogan (Will Smith) finds himself coming grips with his disillusionment about his role as a career killer after almost allowing a target to slip by from a nearly impossible bullet train shot. After officially announcing his retirement to Del Patterson (Ralph Brown), his DIA handler, his disillusionment grows after he not only makes Danielle Zakarewski (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) as his post-retirement tail as assigned by the DIA, but then learns that his final target was assigned based on false information. Meanwhile, GEMINI director Clayton Varris (Clive Owen) and DIA director Janet Lassiter (Linda Emond) find themselves in a power struggle over Brogan’s retirement, leading to a manhunt for Brogan and his associates as issued by Varris. With Zakarewski in tow and the help of long time confidant Baron (Benedict Wong), Brogan attempts to flee the United States and save what lives he can in the fallout of his retirement decision, only to find himself entangled in a life or death battle with GEMINI’s version of the ultimate assassin : a younger, genetically and emotionally modified clone of Brogan.
The story is not necessarily an original one... in fact, the character of Lassiter makes me immediately think of a very similar character from American Ultra, a film I love with plot points that echo some of those found in Gemini Man. That being said, I don’t think the unoriginality of this story necessarily takes away from the enjoyment of this film, as the production team opted to keep things narratively simple rather than deal with elaborate twists and turns. For all intents and purposes, Gemini Man is a chase movie, a counter-espionage film, and a spy thriller that hits all the important beats that the genre requires. Ang Lee once again proves his prowess as a director, giving the film a wonderful look and pacing while also allowing the heart and soul of his characters to be presented in tandem with their lethal abilities. There are no damsels in distress or armchair generals in this movie... everyone who finds themselves engaged in combat, be it ballistic or hand to hand, is displayed as more than capable of handling themselves, but not shown unproportionate as supermen in comparison to others in the film. The bond between Brogan and Junior is also unique in the sense that it dilemma of whether a clone is really and truly an identical copy, or a new being with their own sense of agency and morals.
Speaking of Brogan and Junior, I was incredibly impressed with the special effects work shown in Gemini Man. There are moments when Junior steps into full light and finds himself teetering on the edge of the uncanny valley, but the combination of shading, blocking and camerawork allowed me to suspend disbelief enough to at times genuinely forget that I was looking at a computer generated creation, which I’ve honestly not experienced since seeing two Armie Hammer’s in The Social Network. On occasion, some of the hand to hand combat looked a tad video-gamey, but in all honesty that is a stylistic choice that is not unique to Gemini Man, and it does manage to still mirror the combat of films like those in the John Wick series in many ways, especially the chases and gunplay. Whatever reference source they used to map Junior’s face, it worked well... my guess would be sources like Six Degrees of Separation... there’s even a scene where I wouldn’t be surprised if a little bit of Jaden Smith face-mapping occurred as well.
Will Smith is stellar as always, and in all honesty, I had no doubts in his ability to play a dual role, but I really do appreciate the nuance he provided in regards to his portrayal of Junior. Mary Elizabeth Winestead brings a wonderful feminine touch to a very masculine energy-driven film, while simultaneously avoiding any shades of ‘damsel in distress’... her balance of playing a narrative foil and a utility character is refreshing. Benedict Wong brings a comedic lightness to the film without dragging the weight of the situation down. Clive Owen embraces his villainous role without chewing up the scenery, although he does embrace a bad guy trope or two during his runtime. Linda Emond and Ralph Brown are pitch perfect in their bureaucratic roles as well, towing the government and company line to a tee and only showing hints of sympathy for the situation they’ve created. Appearances by Douglas Hodge, Ilia Volok, E.J. Bonilla, Igor Szasz, Bjorn Freiberg and Justin James Boykin round things out.
For escapism, you can’t really go wrong with Gemini Man, as it successfully pulls you into its world and pushes you forward with its action. Those who choose to nitpick will probably dissect the special effects to death, but if you’re willing to accept the fact that not everyone you see on screen is a human and set that aside, it is easy to fall into the rhythm of the film. Definitely worth checking out while it’s on streaming services, in my opinion.

Fox news Day 2 quick-snap draft grades for all 32 teams - NFL.com
Fox news
I've heard the argument that grading draft picks staunch now after they are made is worthless, however I develop not agree.
Since no person can watch into the long crawl, these 2020 NFL Draft immediate-snap grades handiest partly factor in how I request a participant's profession to progress. These grades are, on the opposite hand, an analysis of the route of every and every group undertook to deal with the avid gamers they did. The grade is also a designate of whether I roar a prospect's selection is of applicable price given his school movie and athleticism.
The cause these snap grades subject is that they give a staunch-time analysis of the route of. If a prospect is understanding a pair of mountainous snatch the day of the draft, however would not work out in the long crawl, that is a truly moderately quite a lot of analysis of his new group's decision than identifying a participant who used to be realizing a pair of reach at the time he used to be picked. Ready three years to grade these picks leads to revisionist historical past, not an steady analysis of a call that used to be in retaining with what used to be known when the participant used to be chosen.
NOTE: These grades had been submitted staunch now after the draft. As my analysis continues over the weekend, the grades will most likely be adjusted.
Day 1 grade: A Day 2 picks: Houston OT Josh Jones (No. 72 overall) Day 2 grade and analysis: A+ First, the Cardinals gave up their 2d-spherical snatch in the bogus for DeAndre Hopkins. I develop not if truth be told dangle to repeat you that used to be a take for them, attain I? Arizona bought a uncover of a factual kind out in the third spherical. Jones is competitive and highly effective. He's not going to grief any run rusher.
Day 1 grade: B Day 2 picks: Auburn DT Marlon Davidson (No. 47 overall); Temple C Matt Hennessy (No. 78) Day 2 grade and analysis: A Atlanta stumbled on a fiery three-methodology in Davidson. He in total performed outside for Auburn, however he has of venture to be a pleasant penetrator inner for the Falcons, complementing Grady Jarrett. Hennessy used to be a pleasant price for the Falcons. Alex Mack won't be spherical forever, and the Temple-tough lineman need to aloof be ready to step in every time the group wants him.
Day 1 grade: A Day 2 picks: Ohio Declare RB J.K. Dobbins (No. 55 overall); Texas A&M DT Justin Madubuike (No. 71); Texas WR Devin Duvernay (No. 92); Ohio Declare LB Malik Harrison (No. 98); Mississippi Declare OG Tyre Phillips (No. 106) Day 2 grade and analysis: A The Ravens already had some depth at working again and completely might per chance well dangle mature the 2d-spherical snatch they bought in the Hayden Hurst substitute with Atlanta in different places, as a change of spending it on Dobbins. Heed Ingram is 30 years stale, though. Dobbins' skill to matriculate the ball down the field with highly effective, low-heart-of-gravity working will match moderately neatly in Baltimore's crawl-heavy machine. He might per chance moreover rob continuously to supply Lamar Jackson a pleasant security valve. Madubuike is a quality defensive lineman, giving the group extra bulk inner along with Brandon Williams, Daylon Mack, and so forth. Duvernay is a appropriate slot receiver who can play the Willie Snead role in time, complementing Hollywood Brown and Miles Boykin. Baltimore stumbled on one other price snatch at linebacker in the athletic Harrison after shoring up that position on Thursday evening with first-rounder Patrick Queen. Phillips is a huge human who performed kind out at Mississippi Declare however initiatives as a highly effective guard for the Ravens. He confirmed nice price inner at the Senior Bowl, and I believe he'los angeles final be a appropriate starter.
Day 1 grade: A Day 2 picks: Iowa DE A.J. Epenesa (No. 54 overall); Utah RB Zack Moss (No. 86) Day 2 grade and analysis: A The Bills traded their first-spherical snatch to Minnesota in the deal for receiver Stefon Diggs, so it used to be not a shock that they mature their 2d-spherical snatch on a defender. Epenesa's consistency has been questioned by scouts, which helps account for why he used to be not a first-spherical snatch despite some very excellent games. He'll be a real, if not spectacular, sturdy-aspect cease -- a discipline where they significant some depth. Moss might per chance be the flexibility again the Bills dangle to head with "Motor" Singletary.
Day 1 grade: A Day 2 picks: Penn Declare DE Yetur Putrid-Matos (No. 38 overall); Southern Illinois S Jeremy Chinn (No. 64) Day 2 grade and analysis: A The Panthers significant attend on the threshold across from Brian Burns, and finding Putrid-Matos accessible early in Round 2 used to be a uncover. He has power and length to be a ingredient as a run rusher and against the crawl. Chinn has an all-spherical sport grand of his draft position. He's ready to play in the slot and at security (not unlike used Panthers CB James Bradberry, by the vogue), assembly a sizable need for Carolina.
Day 1 grade: Incomplete Day 2 picks: Notre Dame TE Cole Kmet (No. 43 overall); Utah CB Jaylon Johnson (No. 50) Day 2 grade and analysis: B+ The Bears did not dangle a first-spherical snatch (because of the Khalil Mack substitute), however they stumbled on a pleasant expertise accessible in Cole Kmet. He can crawl neatly for his size and is willing to drag defenders for a couple of yards. I roar he used to be undervalued in this draft. Alternatively, it used to be attention-grabbing to examine them snatch a tight cease after signing Jimmy Graham as a free agent and the employ of a 2d-spherical snatch on the position a couple of years previously (Adam Shaheen). Johnson used to be a extremely appropriate price snatch as a physical outside corner. He performed injure in 2019, however used to be aloof highly competitive.
Day 1 grade: A Day 2 picks: Clemson WR Tee Higgins (No. 33 overall); Wyoming LB Logan Wilson (No. 65) Day 2 grade and analysis: A I used to be joyful to examine that a disappointing pro-day workout did not trigger Higgins to descend too far. His sturdy hands and physique withhold an eye on give him a staunch shot to be an spectacular downfield playmaker for Joe Burrow. Wilson is an athletic, tough participant who can develop plays in protection and against the crawl. Two real picks for a group having a watch to become a contender in the AFC.
Day 1 grade: A Day 2 picks: LSU S Grant Delpit (No. 44 overall); Missouri DT Jordan Elliott (No. 88); LSU LB Jacob Phillips (No. 97) Day 2 grade and analysis: A The Browns picked up a fifth-spherical snatch (No. 160) from the Colts by trading down early in the 2d spherical -- and they aloof had been ready to land a security to attend their protection. Delpit's tackling components positively price him in the draft, however if he shores that up, he'll provide appropriate price because he can develop plays on the ball and be a leader on protection. The Browns persevered to manufacture their defensive entrance by deciding on Elliott, who will also be a staunch anxiousness for opposing linemen when on his sport. He'll push for having fun with time at the again of Larry Ogunjobi, and might per chance well create staunch into a starter down the street. Cleveland spent the snatch it bought from Houston in the Duke Johnson substitute on Phillips, who met the group's expansive need for a downhill inner linebacker.
Day 1 grade: A Day 2 picks: Alabama CB Trevon Diggs (No. 51 overall); Oklahoma DT Neville Gallimore (No. 82) Day 2 grade and analysis: A Dallas significant to change Byron Jones, and Diggs is a battler on the outside who isn't very going to run into reverse from any NFL receiver. Gallimore provides younger depth on the line of defense. He can work his blueprint past the shoulders of guards in sub packages while used free-agent signees Gerald McCoy and Dontari Poe attain the heavy lifting against the crawl in 2020.
Day 1 grade: A Day 2 picks: Penn Declare WR KJ Hamler (No. 46 overall); Iowa CB Michael Ojemudia (No. 77); LSU C Lloyd Cushenberry (No. 83); Arkansas DT McTelvin Agim (No. 95) Day 2 grade and analysis: A Adding Hamler and first-spherical snatch Jerry Jeudy to the Broncos' offense will develop quarterback Drew Lock extremely chuffed. Ojemudia helped himself in the postseason with his sturdy performance. The sturdy tackler represents a real snatch who fills a need. Cushenberry will be a highly effective pivot for the Broncos for several years; they couldn't dangle asked for far extra price at a position of need. A range picked up from the 49ers for receiver Emmanuel Sanders final descend grew to become into Agim, who will step staunch into a line of defense that significant extra athleticism and depth.
Day 1 grade: A Day 2 picks: Georgia RB D'Andre Swift (No. 35 overall); Notre Dame LB Julian Okwara (No. 67); Ohio Declare OG Jonah Jackson (No. 75) Day 2 grade and analysis: A- I assumed the Lions might per chance very neatly be attempting for defensive attend early in Round 2, however they chosen Swift. It is tough to fault them for deciding on the working again, though, given his explosiveness. Kerryon Johnson has also struggled with injuries in his first two years. Finding Okwara in the third spherical used to be an fabulous price. I factor in he would were a first-spherical snatch if not for the damaged fibula he suffered final season. Julian and his brother, Romeo -- a fifth-year defensive cease for the Lions -- will be an spectacular combination on the outside. Jackson is an spectacular snatch in the third spherical because he is sturdy, durable, tough and can play extra than one positions up entrance.
Day 1 grade: A- Day 2 picks: Boston Faculty RB AJ Dillon (No. 63 overall); Cincinnati TE Josiah Deguara (No. 94) Day 2 grade and analysis: D Why is the grade so low? Properly, these picks did not tackle the group's wants at receiver, linebacker, cornerback and offensive kind out. Dillon's an spectacular again who might per chance well beat defenses into submission. Head coach Matt LaFleur, the used Titans OC, might per chance well request him as his Derrick Henry in the Packers' offense, with his long strides and power complementing Aaron Jones. The play-circulate sport the Titans ran this past season made Ryan Tannehill watch appropriate -- what is going to it attain for Aaron Rodgers? Deguara has staunch doable as an H-again form, though the inconsistent hands he confirmed as a senior need to aloof be shored as much as be grand of this snatch. Both Dillon and Deguara went earlier than I expected, so I query the price. However if Dillon turns into the form of participant Henry did, and Deguara is a Delanie Walker-form versatile probability, then my grade will be confirmed substandard and everyone in Inexperienced Bay will be chuffed.
Day 1 grade: B Day 2 picks: TCU DT Ross Blacklock (No. 40 overall); Florida LB Jonathan Greenard (No. 90) Day 2 grade and analysis: A Blacklock is a pleasant price for the Texans because he can play inner or outside. He regarded esteem a first-spherical snatch in quite a lot of games, so Houston must be joyful that it might per chance per chance well real him in the 2d. Greenard is a supreme edge rusher snatch in the third spherical for the Texans. Whereas not elite in anybody explicit class, he continuously will get upfield and isn't very pushed spherical in the crawl sport. That snatch met a sizable need for opponents on the outside.
Day 1 grade: B Day 2 picks: USC WR Michael Pittman (No. 34 overall); Wisconsin RB Jonathan Taylor (No. 41 overall); Utah S Julian Blackmon (No. 85) Day 2 grade and analysis: A Pittman is an spectacular outside receiver who can develop plays reverse T.Y. Hilton. There had been moderately quite a lot of sizable, sturdy receivers accessible at No. 34, though, esteem Denzel Mims and Poke Claypool, who each and every went later in Round 2. We will watch if the Colts made the factual desire. They then gave up a fifth-spherical selection to change up for Taylor, an all-spherical expertise at working again. He's a good deal improved as a receiver, complementing his sturdiness and power as a runner. If he improves his ball security, as neatly -- watch out! Indianapolis significant a security and took of venture that Blackmon will jump again from the torn ACL he suffered final season to become a ballhawking heart-fielder form -- or maybe even play some outside corner, as he did earlier in his profession at Utah.
Day 1 grade: A Day 2 picks: Colorado WR Laviska Shenault (No. 42 overall); Ohio Declare DT DaVon Hamilton (No. 73) Day 2 grade and analysis: A Going into the draft, I wondered if the Jaguars had been pleased with their receiver depth. It looks they weren't. Shenault is a pressure with the ball in his hands, and need to aloof flip loads of Gardner Minshew's immediate throws into long beneficial properties. Can also they dangle got addressed a extra pressing need with the 42nd snatch? Maybe. However in terms of price, or not it's a moderately appropriate selection. Hamilton addresses their need for line of defense attend, as he used to be advanced to transfer off the ball as a senior and regarded explosive against appropriate opponents at the Senior Bowl.
Day 1 grade: A- Day 2 picks: Mississippi Declare LB Willie Joyful (No. 63 overall); TCU OT Lucas Niang (No. 96) Day 2 grade and analysis: B If Joyful has matured sufficiently to take again of his athletic talents, the Chiefs will worship his sport in the heart of the protection. He's a pronounce-or-bust prospect who might per chance well cowl a pleasant accumulate, not unlike used third-rounder Justin Houston again in the day. If Niang did not dangle his final collegiate season sever immediate because of ruin, I roar his power and nastiness would dangle pushed him not decrease than into the gradual 2d spherical. The Chiefs did not snatch a cornerback, though, which is a venture given their lack of depth at the position.
Day 1 grade: C- Day 2 picks: Kentucky RB Lynn Bowden (No. 80 overall); South Carolina WR Bryan Edwards (No. 81); Clemson LB Tanner Muse (No. 100) Day 2 grade and analysis: A Bowden is an all-spherical probability who has loads of doable as a working again/receiver "Joker" for head coach Jon Gruden. He'll give Josh Jacobs some leisure from the backfield or rob immediate passes from Derek Carr. Edwards has if truth be told nice after-the-rob skill and suits as an very excellent price in the third spherical. He's going to also be a Keenan Allen-form snatch-up for the Raiders. Muse need to aloof be a extremely appropriate particular teams participant and backup linebacker and/or security for Las Vegas.
Day 1 grade: A- Day 2 picks: Florida Declare RB Cam Akers (No. 52 overall); Florida WR Van Jefferson (No. 57); Alabama LB Terrell Lewis (No. 84); Utah S Terrell Burgess (No. 104) Day 2 grade and analysis: A Releasing Todd Gurley spread out a slot at working again and the Rams chosen Akers to take it. Combining final year's third-spherical snatch, Darrell Henderson, and Akers in the backfield need to aloof give Jared Goff a pleasant pair of backs. Jefferson provides Goff some grand-significant depth at the receiver position, as neatly. They mature the need they got from the Texans for Brandin Cooks to deal with the used Gator. It'd be attention-grabbing to examine how Jefferson's profession compares with that of fellow receiver Denzel Mims, who went two picks later. Finding a run rusher esteem Terrell Lewis in Round 3 used to be a staunch plus, even with his historical past of injuries. The Rams stumbled on a nickel again/security in Burgess later in the third spherical. Focused on his protection skill, he used to be grand of being picked grand earlier in the draft. He used to be an absolute uncover.
Day 1 grade: A Day 2 picks: Louisiana OT Robert Hunt (No. 39 overall); Alabama DT Raekwon Davis (No. 56); Texas S Brandon Jones (No. 70) Day 2 grade and analysis: B Hunt is a real factual kind out who used to be picked grand earlier than many expected. Alternatively, he completely has the harmful perspective and power to be a long-time starter. Davis did not provide grand manufacturing for the Tide final year, however he is a highly effective participant between the tackles. He used to be a runt bit decrease on my board than Miami's, it looks. Jones meets a significant need for the Dolphins, as their depth at security used to be severely missing. He wasn't ready to work out at the NFL Scouting Combine on story of a shoulder ruin, which might per chance well need injure him a runt bit, however he gifts sufficient athleticism, intelligence and toughness to be a long-time starter.
Day 1 grade: A Day 2 picks: Boise Declare OT Ezra Cleveland (No. 58 overall); Mississippi Declare CB Cameron Dantzler (No. 89) Day 2 grade and analysis: A- Ezra Cleveland used to be a appropriate selection at the head of the 2d spherical as a doable starter. His consistency in methodology and aggressiveness on movie used to be missing, however the athleticism used to be evident. He's a same participant to Vikings OT Brian O'Neill, a 2d-spherical snatch in 2018. Dantzler is a physical participant with the length to be effective outside. He'll dangle to win stronger in his decrease physique, though, and has to cowl he has the recovery glide to be a starter. The Vikings now dangle 13 picks on Saturday. If they develop not package a couple of of them to change up, they won't dangle to develop many calls at free of fee agents after the draft.
Day 1 grade: Incomplete Day 2 picks: Lenoir-Rhyne S Kyle Dugger (No. 37 overall); Michigan LB Josh Uche (No. 60); Alabama LB Anfernee Jennings (No. 87); UCLA TE Devin Asiasi (No. 91); Virginia Tech TE Dalton Keene (No. 101) Day 2 grade and analysis: A Kyle Dugger is a flexible performer who will work in the field for the Patriots. He's difficult and immediate to the ball. Belichick stumbled on a run rusher in a substitute-up for Uche, an athletic edge rusher who helped meet one of the most group's predominant wants. He joins his used teammate in Ann Arbor, Poke Winovich, on the Patriots. Jennings can play reverse Uche and Winovich, offering a pleasant one-two punch on the outside. New England traded up for Asiasi to meet a sizable tight cease need; he is an athletic guy who used to be underutilized in the Bruins' offense. He won't be overlooked with the Patriots. They moved up again to snatch Keene. The athleticism he confirmed at the mix likely bumped him up a spherical or two in this draft. He's a pleasant blocker/receiver-form whom Belichick will employ in quite a lot of how. It sounds as if the Patriots determined it used to be time to tackle that position, as they had been willing to allotment with picks to win their guys.
Day 1 grade: A- Day 2 picks: Wisconsin LB Zack Baun (No. 74 overall); Dayton TE Adam Trautman (No. 105) Day 2 grade and analysis: A- The Saints required attend in the 2d level of their protection and thus traded up in Round 3 to snatch Baun, a high-50 expertise. He might per chance well need fallen because of a diluted drug test at the mix and the truth that he is aloof rising into his physique. Giving up a 2021 third-spherical snatch to transfer up 14 spots for Baun will be price monitoring down the line. New Orleans made one other predominant transfer gradual in the third, trading their fourth- (No. 130), fifth- (No. 169), sixth- (No. 203) and seventh-spherical (No. 244) picks to the Vikings for the factual to take Adam Trautman, an very excellent receiving tight cease who also offers mountainous effort as a blocker. The Saints went all-in on this snatch, giving Drew Brees a extremely grand target over the next couple of years. The deal mature up the remainder of New Orleans' draft capital, however the group's depth chart is so sturdy that its gradual-spherical picks would've been as likely as undrafted rookie free agents to develop the final roster.
Day 1 grade: B Day 2 picks: Alabama S Xavier McKinney (No. 36 overall); Connecticut OT Matt Peart (No. 99) Day 2 grade and analysis: A- Julian Like looked in line to take over a starting up security discipline subsequent season, however that looks much less likely with McKinney on board. I wondered if teams would request the Alabama product extra esteem Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix or Ronnie Harrison -- two moderately quite a lot of outstanding 'Bama DBs to develop it to the NFL. It sounds as if, or not it's miles the used, with McKinney coming off the board early on Friday. The Giants if truth be told mature their long-established third-spherical snatch on Leonard Williams, whom they bought from the Jets final season, and managed to real some nice offensive line depth in Peart, who can become a helpful swing kind out at the again of Nate Solder and Andrew Thomas. The Giants need to aloof accumulate an edge rusher with their fourth-spherical snatch (No. 110 overall).
Day 1 grade: A Day 2 picks: Baylor WR Denzel Mims (No. 59 overall); Cal S Ashtyn Davis (No. 68); Florida DE Jabari Zuniga (No. 79) Day 2 grade and analysis: A The Jets passed on a receiver in the first spherical however stumbled on a terribly appropriate price in the 2d. Mims has the glide/size combination (6-foot-3, 207 kilos; 4.38 40) to become a pressure on the outside that will develop up for the free company departure of Robby Anderson. Davis is an very excellent athlete who will duvet a ton of ground for the Jets in the secondary. He might per chance well play nickel again to boot to security however will dangle to cowl he is physical sufficient to tackle proo receivers. The Jets stumbled on the real mid-spherical edge prospect they significant in Zuniga, who has the bend and power to be not decrease than a real scuttle specialist for the following couple of years.
Day 1 grade: B Day 2 picks: Oklahoma QB Jalen Hurts (No. 53 overall); Colorado LB Davion Taylor (No. 103) Day 2 grade and analysis: A- I worship Hurts as a competitor; he'll be a plus in any locker room. Carson Wentz has overlooked some time over his first four seasons, so getting Hurts as an insurance protection protection isn't very a boring notion. Eagles coach Doug Pederson can attend Hurts reach his doable as a pure passer, proving this to be an very wide array down the line. If Pederson desires to make employ of Hurts in a Taysom Hill-form role in the meantime, he can attain that, too. Taylor used to be an straightforward snatch for the Eagles to develop in Round 3, as he is a linebacker ready to duvet loads of ground and then explode into tackles. They'll be ready to win a working again, security and inner offensive lineman later in the draft.
Day 1 grade: A Day 2 picks: Notre Dame WR Poke Claypool (No. 49 overall); UNC-Charlotte LB Alex Highsmith (No. 102) Day 2 grade and analysis: A Claypool is the develop of physical pressure on the outside that the Steelers haven't had for some time. He might per chance well play a stand-up tight cease role inner, as neatly. Adding him to used 2d-rounders JuJu Smith-Schuster (2017) and James Washington (2018) will develop the Steelers' offense as harmful as Ben Roethlisberger's beard. Pittsburgh stumbled on its mid-spherical edge rusher in Highsmith, who's ready to beat his man off the line and crawl down quarterbacks with aplomb. I used to be a runt bit stunned he used to be aloof on the board when Pittsburgh picked in the third spherical.
Day 1 grade: B Day 2 picks: Tennessee DE Darrell Taylor (No. 48 overall); LSU OG Damien Lewis (No. 69) Day 2 grade and analysis: B+ The Seahawks persevered to toughen their protection by deciding on a long, sturdy run rusher in Taylor. That win-off and toughness is what Pete Carroll wants on the threshold. We will watch in time if giving up a Third-spherical snatch to transfer up 11 slots for Taylor, as a change of waiting a runt bit longer or deciding on Terrell Lewis or one other edge participant, used to be a runt bit too rich. Damien Lewis is extremely effective and has better foot quickness than he is given credit for. He addresses a sizable need for the Seahawks.
Day 1 grade: A Day 2 picks: Minnesota S Antoine Winfield (No. 45 overall); Vanderbilt RB Ke'Shawn Vaughn (No. 76) Day 2 grade and analysis: B Winfield's playmaking talents overcame his lack of size (5-9) and any moderately quite a lot of fears teams might per chance honest dangle had about him. Bucs fans will bask in his skill for years yet to win again. Vaughn is a real again who used to be doubtlessly picked a runt bit of too early. He need to aloof be an spectacular four-year contributor though, because his versatile skill position will enable him to dangle an affect on extra than one aspects of the offense. The Vandy neatly-known person, or one other again with same talents, might per chance honest were accessible later; the group might per chance well need benefited extra from prioritizing a run rusher in the third spherical.
Day 1 grade: B- Day 2 picks: LSU CB Kristian Fulton (No. 61 overall); Appalachian Declare RB Darrynton Evans (No. 93) Day 2 grade and analysis: A Getting a starting up cornerback in Fulton at No. 61 overall used to be a steady price snatch -- a first-spherical expertise taken gradual in Round 2 who addresses a predominant position of need. Evans will complement Derrick Henry with pure glide in the crawl sport and used to be picked roughly where I expected. You might per chance well not attend however esteem what Tennessee came away with on Friday evening.
Day 1 grade: A- Day 2 picks: Memphis RB Antonio Gibson (No. 66 overall) Day 2 grade and analysis: B+ It'd be attention-grabbing to examine how Washington makes employ of Gibson in its offense. Ron Rivera doubtlessly sees some Curtis Samuel (who Rivera picked in the 2d spherical while in Carolina) in Gibson's sport: versatile, sturdy and rapid. Or maybe used Panthers offensive coordinator Scott Turner will employ him a runt bit esteem he did Christian McCaffrey? Gibson's most efficient position match will most likely be purely as a working again, though, a power participant to take over from Adrian Peterson down the street. There might per chance be continuously a query about whether avid gamers esteem Gibson need to aloof be illustrious for his or her versatility or seen skeptically because they lack a company position. Washington did not dangle a 2d-spherical snatch on story of their 2019 draft-day substitute for first-spherical snatch Montez Sweat. Whereas Sweat will also be a appropriate participant, it's miles not yet sure whether that transfer used to be price the price.

The Ravens’ offseason is all about setting up a Super Bowl run
The Ravens still have Lamar Jackson, but upgrades on defense and at wide receivers are a big priority this offseason.
The Baltimore Ravens are on the doorstep of a Super Bowl. Many thought they could make it this year on the back of MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson. Then the Ravens were run over in the playoffs by Derrick Henry and the Tennessee Titans.
Baltimore has always been a team focused on defense. That is until it traded back into the first round of the 2018 draft to take Jackson. Now the Ravens are one of the most diverse offenses in the NFL.
Baltimore Ravens (14-2), lost in Divisional Round
For much of the 2019 season, the Ravens were considered the best team in the NFL. They’re one of the favorites to be in the Super Bowl, but they would be smart to address these positions this offseason.
Before free agency
Pass rusher: Over the years, regardless of the head coach or defensive coordinator, Baltimore’s best defenses have had a good pass rush. With Matthew Judon entering free agency for the first time, Baltimore is faced with needing to address that aspect of their game. If Baltimore doesn’t land someone in free agency, it could turn to the draft. Terrell Lewis of Alabama in the first round or likely Day 2 picks like Zack Baun of Wisconsin or Josh Uche of Michigan make sense.
Defensive line: Baltimore’s defensive line played well last season and led one of the NFL’s better run defenses. But nose tackle Michael Pierce is a free agent, as is midseason acquisition Domata Peko. The team could find veteran help on the open market.
Wide receiver: The Ravens used two of their first three picks in last year’s draft on wide receivers, grabbing Marquise Brown in the first round and Miles Boykin in the third. Still, the Ravens could use another pass catcher. There are a few veteran options in free agency, but there will be even more value in the draft, especially when the Ravens pick at No. 28. Clemson’s Tee Higgins is not known for his speed, but the 6’4 outside receiver makes plenty of plays going up and attacking the ball. If Colorado’s Laviska Shenault should fall — and it’s possible in a loaded wide receiver group — he should be in play.
What Baltimore Beatdown wants most this offseason: The Ravens have been effective in recent years at moving back to accumulate picks while still getting their guys. I believe this is the year to take the opposite approach and be aggressive targeting blue chip players while utilizing their 10 picks to move up the board in the first round. Depth is not an issue and getting a day one starter in the first round gives them all kinds of options with their available cap space. — Eric Misotti
After free agency
The Ravens addressed their need of a pass rusher by picking up Calais Campbell from the Jaguars, who had 31.5 sacks over three seasons in Jacksonville. There are still some needs Baltimore needs to fill during the draft, though.
1. Defensive tackle: If Baltimore wants a squatty plugger like Pierce, who signed with the Vikings, Benito Jones of Ole Miss would be a good Day 3 pickup. A four-year starter in college, the 6’1, 316-pound Jones can get leverage and driver blockers backward.
2. Wide receiver: The Ravens re-signed De’Anthony Thomas and Chris Moore, but neither of them were primary starters. Picking up a wideout in the draft would be a smart move. Beyond the first round, Baylor’s Denzel Mims is riding high after a strong Senior Bowl week and could be a second-round possibility. Southern California’s Michael Pittman should be in that range as well. On the third day of the draft, South Carolina’s Bryan Edwards has value.
3. Offensive line: The Ravens placed a low tender on OL Matt Skura, who suffered a knee injury in early January last season, as a restricted free agent. if Baltimore doesn’t end up re-signing him, drafting a lineman this draft cycle would be pretty important.
After the draft:
Arguably no team did a better job in this year’s draft than the Ravens. Their first-round pick, linebacker Patrick Queen, is the C.J. Mosley successor they were missing last year. Ohio State star J.K. Dobbins, considered by the Ravens to be the No. 1 running back this year, fell to them with the No. 55 pick, making Baltimore’s already deadly rushing attack even deadlier.
They found value in every round, but none more so than the third. Texas A&M defensive tackle Justin Madubuike, Texas wide receiver Devin Duvernay, Ohio State linebacker Malik Harrison, and Mississippi guard Tyre Phillips all fill a need. Late-round picks James Proche (SMU WR) and Geno Stone (Iowa safety) are sneaky-good additions, too.
Dan Kadar’s draft grade: A

Late for Work 5/12: Way-Too-Early Roster Projections at Four Key Positions - BaltimoreRavens.com
New Post has been published on https://newsprofixpro.com/moxie/2020/05/12/late-for-work-5-12-way-too-early-roster-projections-at-four-key-positions-baltimoreravens-com/
Late for Work 5/12: Way-Too-Early Roster Projections at Four Key Positions - BaltimoreRavens.com
Way-Too-Early Roster Projection at Four Key Positions
The Baltimore Sun’s Jonas Shaffer made a way-too-early projection of the Ravens’ 53-man roster. Here’s a look at four of the most compelling position groups and Shaffer’s predictions for them:
Quarterback (2): Lamar Jackson, Robert Griffin III:”When the Ravens drafted [Trace] McSorley, they envisioned him as a potential Taysom Hill-esque weapon. With Griffin seemingly well established as Jackson’s backup, this is the offseason for the former Penn State star to prove he’s a two-phase player. He was a fixture in special teams practices last season but never saw a snap there, even when active in Week 17. If McSorley shines in the preseason again — or whatever replaces it amid the coronavirus pandemic — he’d be hard to stash on the practice squad. But the undrafted Tyler Huntley, an All-Pac-12 Conference player at Utah, has a similar dual-threat skill set and should fit the Ravens’ scheme well.”
Wide receiver (6): Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, Willie Snead IV, Miles Boykin, Devin Duvernay, James Proche, Chris Moore: “The depth chart after [the top four] is up for grabs. Team officials have raved about Proche’s hands, and he’ll enter training camp as one of the favorites at punt returner. But if the Ravens find a better option there and the sixth-round pick struggles to adjust to the speed of the game on offense, his 2020 role becomes less certain. Given [Head Coach John] Harbaugh’s roster priorities, Moore could turn out to be this season’s Justin Bethel, a skill position player whose primary contributions are on special teams coverage units. De’Anthony Thomas ended last season as the Ravens’ starting kickoff and punt returner, and that remains his path to a job in 2020. Jaleel Scott can contribute on special teams, too, and it’s too early to rule out contributions as a receiver. But time is running out for the former fourth-round pick, who had a strong 2019 preseason, then got just 17 offensive snaps all season.”
Defensive line (5): Calais Campbell, Brandon Williams, Derek Wolfe, Justin Madubuike, Broderick Washington Jr.: “Washington is not a dynamic pass rusher, but he can help replace Chris Wormley’s run-stopping contributions at defensive end. If the Ravens had to pick between him, [Daylon] Mack and [Justin] Ellis, it’d be hard to fault them for going with the one lineman who doesn’t have a knee injury in his medical history. (It might be easier to sneak Mack onto the practice squad, too.)”
Inside linebacker (4): L.J. Fort, Patrick Queen, Malik Harrison, Otaro Alaka: “Adding two of the draft’s top linebacker prospects should help shore up the position, in both the short and long term. It should also make the veteran battles for a roster spot even more competitive. … Among the team’s veterans, Fort has a leg up; he has the most starting experience in the Ravens’ system, though it’s just eight games. Health and special teams contributions will be important. Fort had more special teams snaps than defensive snaps in seven games last season, and [Chris] Board has been a steady presence there since 2018. Offseason signing Jake Ryan, who’s played just two games over the past two seasons, has significant special teams experience, too.”
Ravens Enter 2020 With Chip on Shoulder, But So Do AFC North Rivals
It’s been four months since the Ravens’ Super Bowl aspirations were dashed by a shocking loss to the Tennessee Titans in the divisional round of the playoffs, and while the sting may have subsided, it hasn’t wholly dissipated.
Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the Ravens were identified as one of the teams entering the 2020 season with a big chip on their shoulder by NFL.com.
“To the naked eye, Baltimore appeared lost in the latter stages of a belladonna voyage as Derrick Henry flung dazed defenders into the terrible Maryland night,” NFL.com’s Marc Sessler wrote. “In a flash, the mighty Ravens – their 14-2 record, their MVP quarterback and all their boasts – were reduced to salt. Few teams burn more brightly for a chance to make things right.”
Nothing short of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy next February will fully make things right for the Ravens, but they can gain a measure of retribution when the Titans return to M&T Bank Stadium in Week 11. That contest obviously is one of the biggest revenge games of the season.
“Stunned fans at M&T Bank Stadium were left to wonder what in the hell just happened, while Jackson faced more questions on why his dominant play in the regular season had yet to surface in two playoff losses,” NFL.com’s Dan Hanzus wrote. “The reigning MVP will have to wait until January to slay that narrative, but beating up on Tennessee in November would undeniably scratch an itch. Big Truss.”
The Titans game isn’t the only one the Ravens should circle on the schedule, according to Pro Football Talk’s Chris Simms.
Jackson is 19-3 as a starter, but two of those losses have come against Patrick Mahomes and the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. Both of those games were in Kansas City, however. The Ravens will host the Chiefs on “Monday Night Football” during Week 3 in arguably the most anticipated game of the season.
“You’re going to need to beat the Kansas City Chiefs at some point,” Simms said. “And the Ravens are flirting with that, ‘Man, are they going to win a playoff game with Lamar Jackson? The Kansas City Chiefs are 2-0 against them. Mahomes has Lamar Jackson’s number.’ I just look at that as a big game for the Ravens to basically say, ‘OK, we can beat the Kansas City Chiefs. We can win a playoff-type atmosphere type of football game.'”
As for other teams playing with a chip on their shoulder, Hanzus said the Ravens’ three AFC North rivals also have plenty of motivation.
“The North also houses the Browns, who hit the field as an overhyped, unprepared, absurd mess that left Baker Mayfield’s Q-rating riding the ocean floor. This offseason’s under-the-radar status feels right for a Cleveland club with a stacked roster,” Hanzus wrote. “The Steelers missed the playoffs due to a Biblical plague of injuries, while the Bengals – suddenly hot to trot with Joe Burrow under center – refuse to be dismissed.
“Talent alone suggests three teams from the North should qualify for the AFC’s new seven-slot playoff field – or something went very wrong.”

Mahomes, Jackson Are Top Favorites to Win MVP Award
Speaking of the rivalry between Mahomes and Jackson, the respective 2018 and 2019 NFL MVPs are the favorites to take home the honor this season.
Mahomes is given 4-1 odds to win the award by Caesars Sportsbook, while Jackson is second at 13-2. A quarterback has been named MVP seven years in a row.
By the way, Mahomes and Jackson’s MVP seasons both made NFL.com’s list of the top 10 passing seasons of the past decade. Mahomes’ 2018 campaign, when he became the third quarterback in NFL history to throw 50 touchdown passes, was No. 2. Jackson’s 2019 season, when he led the league in touchdown passes and set a single-season rushing record for a quarterback, was No. 10.
It has to be gratifying for Jackson to see his name on a list that includes Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers. Not bad for a … you know the rest.
On a side note, CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora ranked Jackson No. 1 in his confidence rankings of quarterbacks who came out of the past three drafts.
“The league MVP is all ball,” La Canfora wrote. “No BS in the offseason. No distractions. Ravens keep adding new pieces for him and he can throw to a now fully healthy Hollywood Brown down in Miami. Look out NFL.”
UDFA Tight End Jacob Breeland Is Confident He Can Make the Team
At least one undrafted free agent has made the Ravens’ roster for 16 consecutive years. Shaffer predicted that streak will continue this year in the form of tight end Jacob Breeland, who was on his way to having a huge senior season at Oregon before suffering a season-ending knee injury in October.
The 6-foot-5, 252-pound Breeland, who was an adept pass-catcher and run-blocker with the Ducks, caught 26 passes for 405 yards and six touchdowns in six games before suffering a torn ACL and meniscus. The injury prevented Breeland from participating in the NFL Scouting Combine and caused him to go undrafted.
During an appearance on Glenn Clark Radio, Breeland said he is confident he’ll be 100 percent for training camp and believes he can make the team. The Ravens have an opening at No. 3 tight end after trading Hayden Hurst to the Atlanta Falcons.
“Obviously, I would have liked to have gotten drafted,” Breeland said, “but I believe where I am now is where I’m supposed to be. … I definitely believe I can make the roster and I can get in some playing time this year. I’d love to learn from Mark Andrews and some of the tight ends, just great athletes and veterans that for sure can just expose me to some key factors to playing in the NFL. I’m just excited, honestly.”

Another home SEC game means another big recruiting weekend for Auburn.
A late recruiting article is better than none right?
Auburn once again plays host to an SEC team from Mississippi this weekend and will once again have a number of top 2018, 2019 and 2020 prospects on campus. Last weekend, the Tigers hosted some big time recruits who were able to witness in person Auburn’s beatdown of Dan Mullen’s Bulldogs. Benjamin Wolk over at SECCountry put together a great recap of last week’s visitors including two 2019 prospects that have the Tigers on top.
This week the list might be even more impressive. Based off reports from 247, SECCountry and Twitter, here’s who is expected on the Plains this weekend.
4* OG Trey HIll
4* WR Justyn Ross
4* QB Joey Gatewood (Auburn Commit)
4* ATH Harold Joiner
4* WR Seth Williams
4* DT Coynis Miller
4* WR Anthony Schwartz
4* RB Asa Martin (Auburn Commit)
4* S Quindarious Monday (Auburn Commit)
4* CB Saivion Smith (LSU Transfer)
4* LB Michael Harris (Auburn Commit)
4* Buck Richard Jibunor
3* DE Andres Fox
3* OL Jalil Irvin (Auburn Commit)
3* DL Daquan Newkirk (Auburn Commit)
3* WR Shedrick Jackson (Auburn Commit)
3* OL Kameron Stutts (Auburn Commit)
3* ATH Josh Marsh (Auburn Commit)
NR QB AJ Curry
2019 5* C Clay Webb
2019 4* QB Bo Nix
2019 4* LB King Mwikuta
2019 4* RB Jerrion Ealy
2019 C Louis Smith
2019 DB Donovan Curry
2020 RB Mecose Todd
2020 DE Andy Boykin
For the second straight weekend the #1 player in the state of Alabama, Justyn Ross, will be in Jordan-Hare Stadium. More than likely, Auburn is chasing Clemson right now for the big bodied WR but Auburn’s recent improvement in the passing game should help the orange and blue Tigers stay in the race.
Possibly the biggest visitor of the day will be Coynis Miller. The outstanding defensive lineman will announce his commitment next weekend and it wasn’t completely clear which school he would visit Saturday. The Florida Gators are still his public leaders but Auburn is supposedly a very close 2nd. The Gators were working hard to get Miller back down to Gainesville on an official visit for the LSU game. Instead, the Birmingham native will travel to the Plains on an unofficial visit. Miller is probably Auburn’s top defensive target right now and Auburn would love nothing more than to land his commitment next weekend. Expect Auburn commits Asa Martin and Joey Gatewood to spend a lot of time recruiting the big man. Martin and Miller specifically are close friends. I still think he picks Auburn as of today and him visiting this weekend only gives me more confidence in that prediction.
There’s another big man on campus as well who decided to travel to Auburn instead of going to a “bigger game”. Trey Hill is Auburn’s top remaining OL target. The big man was long considered an UGA lean but recently it sounds like Auburn and Florida State have made a major push. With the Noles facing Miami this weekend it’s a pretty positive sign that Hill chose to visit Auburn instead Tallahassee. I admit that I lean posibarner but I really like Auburn’s chances with Hill right now, especially if Auburn continues to put together a strong season.
Finally, keep an eye on former 5* LSU signee and now the top rated JUCO CB prospect, Saivion Smith, who is expected to visit today with his teammate and Auburn commit Daquan Newkirk. The Tigers want to sign at least one cornerback and Smith has emerged as a top target for that position. Right now, Alabama is considered the team to beat and honestly it might be hard to overtop them. However, whenever a kid visits you always got a shot. If Auburn can impress him today they might be able to make a run for the 6’1” 175 lb DB. He has immediate impact potential.
I don’t expect any commitments this week but if there were someone to pull the trigger the two names to watch are Richard Jibunor and Seth Williams. Jibunor has long been on commit watch for the Tigers but the Florida Gators are making a big push. I expect Auburn puts on the full court press this weekend and would love to lock him down today if possible though I expect he holds off on any decisions. Williams is a guy the Tigers have done an outstanding job recruiting and have emerged as his leader. Today could be a great opportunity to showcase Auburn’s rejuvenated passing offense and could possibly convince him to pull that trigger earlier than expected. I don’t expect either to commit today but definitely two guys to keep an eye on.
Justin Fields Commitment
If you haven’t heard by now, 5* QB Justin Fields committed to the Georgia Bulldogs yesterday. When Fields first decommitted, Auburn was considered one of the top threats at landing the stud QB’s signature. However, as time passed, the Tigers began to fall behind in the race as Kirby Smart and company made a big time push, ultimately snagging the #1 overall player.
It stinks to lose out on a top talent but this was far from a must have kid for Auburn. The Tigers already have a big time QB committed in 4* Joey Gatewood who is putting together a ridiculous senior season. The longtime AU commit reaffirmed he’s all AU yesterday afternoon.
Been committed for 3 years & not changing #WarEagle ..
— Joey Gatewood (@Joey1gatewood) October 6, 2017
The real question moving forward is will Auburn take a second QB? It’s far from certain though I imagine the coaching staff would like to have 4 guys on scholarship next year. Keep an eye on AJ Curry who is having a breakout senior year and will be on campus this weekend. There’s also 3* Steven Krajewski who camped at Auburn over the summer and whose coach is close with Chip Lindsey. Also guys like 3* James Foster (Missouri Commit), 3* Cordell Littlejohn (former Illinois Commit) and 4* Jarren Williams (Kentucky Commit) are all names to file away.
Bottom line is while seeing an elite player like Fields go to a rival isn’t fun, the Tigers should be just fine moving forward. Gatewood gives the Tigers a kid with tremendous upside and the potential to have just as dynamic a career as Fields. Over the next few months we should get a better feel for if the Tigers plan to add a 2nd QB or not.

Bobby Wilder built ODU from scratch. Can he *re*build it?
After 2016’s breakthrough, the Monarchs are in danger of three straight down years.
Bill C’s annual preview series of every FBS team in college football continues. Catch up here!
In 2016, the Monarchs won 10 games and the Bahamas Bowl. It was the culmination of a decade-long start-up process. And it appears the foot has since come off of the gas pedal.
ODU hired Bobby Wilder in 2007 to start a program. The Monarchs went 17-5 as a provisional FCS independent in 2009-10, cranked out two top-10 finishes and 21 wins in 2011-12, leaped to FBS and went a decent 11-13 in 2014-15, then broke through in 2016, damn near making the Conference USA title game before outlasting EMU in the Bahamas. This was about as meteoric a process as you’ll see.
From the moment the final second ticked off the clock in Nassau, however, things went awry. ODU had to replace a ton of production in 2017 and slipped from 10 wins and a No. 69 S&P+ ranking to five wins and No. 120.
The Monarchs started 2018 with a 1-6 record that included a 42-point loss to Liberty and a two-point loss to ECU. Not sure which is more embarrassing. The one win came against Virginia Tech somehow, but they were again mired in the 120s in S&P+, and it was pretty easy to make the case that Wilder’s days as head coach in Norfolk were numbered. (Since he’s the only coach the program has had and did such a wonderful job over his first decade, maybe he would have gotten more rope.)
ODU rallied, however. An upset of North Texas and a 77-14 romp over VMI highlighted a 3-2 finish that made Wilder’s seat a little less scalding. Granted, there was also a 34-point loss to MTSU and an ugly 14-point loss to hapless Rice, but ODU still improved to 109th by the end of the year.
It would be a good idea to build off of that progress this fall. But with all this turnover, that could be tricky. You know how the numbers show turnover at quarterback, in the receiving corps, and in the secondary are more tied to year-to-year rises and regression than in other units? Well, ODU must replace quarterback Blake LaRussa, its top three wide receivers, and its top four safeties. For that matter, the Monarchs lose four of their top six offensive linemen and five of their top seven defensive linemen (including Oshane Ximines, likely a high NFL draftee) as well.
The culture that Wilder spent a decade building? It unraveled in about a season and a half, and now he’s relying on a lineup with about a dozen new starters to re-establish it. Suboptimal.
Wilder has tried to counter the inexperience on the two-deep with extra seasoning in the coaching staff. He brought in Bryan Stinespring (26 years at Virginia Tech) as offensive line coach and Galen Hall (defensive co-coordinator at VT until 2018) as DBs coach. He asked David Blackwell to serve as his defensive coordinator after Blackwell raised ECU’s Def. S&P+ ranking from 128th to 101st in his lone year in Greenville. ODU ranked 119th on defense with Ximines and company; Blackwell, Hall, etc., have their work cut out for them.
Offense
ODU does sort of return a starting QB in 2019. Steven Williams finished 2017 as the first-stringer, producing a 146.2 passer rating in the last three games of his true freshman year, and he started 2018 atop the two-deep as well. But he struggled out of the gates, completing 50 percent of his passes with a 106.4 rating, and he was replaced by LaRussa, who had begun 2017 as the starter. LaRussa torched Virginia Tech and never looked back; he threw for 3,015 yards, ODU ranked 47th in passing marginal efficiency, and, having played parts of only four games, Williams redshirted.
Ray Carlin-USA TODAY Sports
Steven Williams
With LaRussa gone, Williams will get the first crack at the job. Wilder and longtime coordinator Brian Scott aren’t putting all their eggs into one basket, though. They signed two JUCO transfers — former Michigan State four-star Messiah deWeaver and Stone Smartt, who threw for 2,700 yards (with 31 TDs to 3 INTs!) at Riverside CC in 2018 — plus a mid-three-star freshman in Hayden Wolff.
This should be a pretty exciting QB competition, and the winner will have to carry the offense. Of the five skill corps members with at least 75 intended touches (carries and pass targets) last year, only one returns: running back Kesean Strong.
Kesean Strong (1)
A bit player in 2015 and 2016, Strong saw the most intended touches on the team last fall, rushing 106 times with 29 targets. His success rate on those 135 plays was 43.7 percent, slightly above the team average of 42.6, so he is not without efficiency value. Sophomore running back Matt Geiger produced a 54 percent success rate, and a trio of tight ends (sophomores Keon White and Donta Anthony Jr. and junior Marcus Joyner) combined for a 58 percent success rate as well.
The Monarchs will need some big-play companions, however, after the loss of wideouts Jonathan Duhart and Travis Fulgham. Last year’s top four returning backup WRs combined for 16 catches and 191 yards in 2018. It’s basically seniors Darrell Brown and Hasaan Patterson and a truckload of true and redshirt freshmen.
Stinespring’s first ODU line is in the middle of a makeover as well. Of last year’s 60 line starts, ODU loses those responsible for 33 of them, including honorable mention all-conference center Nick Clarke. The left side (tackle Isaac Weaver and guard Tony Barnett) is experienced, and the rest of it is not.
Stinespring is in the middle of a late-career renaissance. He was maligned near the end of his stay in Blacksburg, but he oversaw an excellent James Madison run game and line in 2016 (the Dukes’ FCS title year) and 2017, and Maryland ranked 18th in Rushing S&P+ in 2018, his lone year in College Park. ODU’s run game has lacked a spark; adding Stinespring doesn’t hurt.
Defense
So here’s my attempt at positive spin regarding the loss of stud end Ximines: with him, ODU only ranked 103rd in sack rate (he had 12 sacks), 75th in stuff rate (he had 24.5!), and 90th in havoc rate (he had 19 percent of team havoc plays). And again, they were 119th in Def. S&P+. The Monarchs probably won’t get better at these things in his absence, but they don’t have a whole lot of room to get worse.
That wasn’t very positive, was it?
Well, how about this: Blackwell is a damn good coordinator. Here’s what I wrote in last year’s ECU preview:
In his last three years at Jacksonville State, the Gamecocks never allowed more than 20 points per game. Last year’s JSU defense was a damn masterpiece, allowing 15 points per game and 3.8 yards per play with a 21.2 percent havoc rate that would have ranked fourth at the FBS level.
ECU last year: 45 points per game, 7.7 yards per play, 9.9 percent havoc rate. Last in FBS on all three accounts. Getting Blackwell was a damn coup.
He didn’t work miracles at ECU, but the Pirates still made drastic improvements just to get to 101st in Def. S&P+. They attacked with occasional recklessness (24th in havoc rate, 22nd in stuff rate, 23rd in sack rate), and while they got torched quite a bit ... well ... they were getting torched the year before, too. At least last year they made some plays, too.
Ray Carlin-USA TODAY Sports
Lawrence Garner (34)
Without Ximines (and fellow end Tim Ward), the search for play-makers will be all-hands-on-deck. But at least there’s experience elsewhere.
Junior tackles Jeremy Meiser and Juwan Ross (combined: 24 tackles, 7 TFLs, 1.5 sacks) are back.
The top four linebackers return, including MLB Lawrence Garner, the team’s second-best havoc guy (9 TFLs, 5 passes defensed, 12 run stuffs).
The top three cornerbacks — junior Joe Joe Headen and sophomores Geronda Hall and Lance Boykin — are back, too. They were young last year but did combine for 19 passes defensed.
Geronda Hall (23)
Sensing ODU was falling behind from a talent standpoint, Wilder loaded up on JUCOs, signing 10 on defense — three linemen, three linebackers, four defensive backs. The three up front (end Elijah Golston and tackles Tyre Bibby and Blake Hehl) and two safeties (Harrell Blackmon and R’Tarriun Johnson) are probably the most important.
I’m confident in Blackwell figuring out some improvements, but the best news is that there are almost no seniors. The only ones who might play a role are linebacker Terez Dickerson and tackle Mufu Taiwo. Otherwise, whatever assets Blackwell discovers in 2019 will be scheduled to return in 2020.
Special Teams
ODU ranked 41st in Special Teams S&P+ last year, its best performance yet. Isaiah Harper was extremely efficient in the return game, and he’s gone, but the biggest strength was a lack of outright weaknesses.
Junior Nick Rice ranked 45th in field goal efficiency, and while punter Bailey Cate’s kicks weren’t long (39.7 average), they were high enough to prevent returns (4.3 average). This should still be a decent unit.

On September 28, Blackwell’s former employer (ECU) and Stinespring’s former employer (new ECU head coach Mike Houston) will come to Norfolk for a game that will set the table for the rest of the season.
ODU will almost certainly be 1-2 at that point, after a likely win over Norfolk State and likely losses at Virginia Tech and Virginia, so the ECU game will define expectations. Win, and ODU will likely be in the hunt for bowl eligibility (especially with a home win over WKU the next week). Lose, and it’s hard to figure out where to find five more wins.
This is an awkward time for ODU. Wilder built up a ton of goodwill, but athletic directors don’t like trying to positively spin three down years in a row, and boosters aren’t usually receptive to spin. Wilder probably needs more proof of concept soon, but after two dire years and then turnover, he’s in a youth movement.
Wilder inked nearly a lineup’s worth of JUCOs (a tactic that tends to have drawbacks a couple of years down the line), and he’ll need them to thrive if he wants a serious shot at seven wins or so. Otherwise, this lineup screams “pretty good in 2020” ... for a coach who might need to be pretty good in 2019.
