Davis Cup: Croatia cruise into Finals Group stage despite doubles slip
Rijeka (Croatia), Feb 6 (IANS) Borna Coric fired Croatia through to the Davis Cup Finals for a fourth time after ending Austria’s hopes of a final day fightback in their 2023 Qualifier. Coric saw off Dominic Thiem 7-6(3) 6-2 in an hour and 45 minutes to prevent Jurgen Melzer’s visiting side from gaining any further momentum after Austrian doubles pair Lucas Miedler & Alexander Erler had recorded…

Hard one: Doubles predictions at Wimby??
Oh god, I’ve barely looked at the doubles draw 😬😬 I do not know the women well enough to make any kind of prediction for them so I’ll just stick to the men. Although, the men are fuckin wild, there’s a lot of new pairings and crazy rankings
Doubles is a hot mess and never goes how you expect so lets pull out some who I think will do well/could pull an upset -
1/ Bryan bros - Always a favourite going into any event. Mike is defending champ, although he has ditched Jack in favour of Bob but honestly? Bob has some serious movement despite being part metal now. I think they’re 7th seeding is mis-leading, they’re ones to watch for sure. Not to mention their 3 previous wins, and 3 other runner up slots, you’d be foolish to discount them
2/ A bit out there with Nicolas Mahut & Édouard Roger-Vasselin. Nico has obviously won Wimbledon before with Herbert, and in that very final (2016), they beat Édouard. They’re obviously a new partnership, but I think they could have a chance here, especially as doubles is always a wild one
3/ You know what? I’m gonna go really out there for this one: Leander Paes & Benoit Paire. Obviously, Benoit has never had a great time at Wimbledon in the doubles (never passed R1), but Leander? He’s won it (admittedly in 1999) and has a few mixed dubs wins too, as recently as 2015. And they’ve played together a few times in recent months, I think they could spice things up, especially if they face the number 2 seeds in round 2...
4/ It’s got to be said: Andy Murray & Pierre-Hughes Herbert. Obviously Pierre is an accomplished doubles player, with a career Grand Slam and a few grass titles under his belt, there’s no real question ability. But Andy? Only just coming back from hip surgery, he won the doubles at Queens and then went out R1 at Eastbourne - so a mixed bag of results. But lets not forget he won silver in the mixed doubles at the 2012 Olympics (so the colourful Wimbledon). Definitely a pair to watch
5/ Lets throw another seeded lot in here:  Oliver Marach & Jürgen Melzer. A relatively new pairing, but one to watch. Oliver has reached the final (2017) and Jurgen has won it before (2010 & 2011 mixed dubs). They both incredible players and could be a great duo, I don’t think they should be underestimated.
I think Wimbledon being best of 5 sets really throws a lot of the doubles specialists as, generally, they’re not used to playing long matches. It opens up the draw a bit to those who also play singles and are more acclimatised to the long 5-setters. There’s others I could have mentioned, but honestly? There’s no consistency in doubles. It truly is anyone’s game and I love it
Wimbledon give me the mixed doubles draw please

The rivalry is taking place in a round-robin format at The O2 Arena with the top two players in the individual group advancing to the semi-finals. Today saw the first round-robin games in Group Tokyo 1970 with Serbia's Djokovic up first alongside eighth seed Diego Schwartzman of Argentina.
Djokovic recorded a comprehensive 6-3 6-2 win, earning his 12th straight victory in opening matches at the tournament in the process. Schwartzman, creation his debut at the end of term event broke initial in the first set before Djokovic broke back. Djokovic broke again at 4-3 before closing out set one.
The world number one broke early in the second set before cruising to victory in one hour and 18 minutes. The day's second round-robin match saw a repeat of the ATP Paris Masters final from eight days earlier between Russian Medvedev and Alexander Zverev, the fifth seed from Germany. Medvedev triumphed from a set down to clinch that title but his victory was achieved in straight sets today as he triumphed 6-3 6-4.
Serving proved an issue for Zverev who hit four double faults in his opening two games and never found any momentum as he lost the first set 6-3. In the second set, Zverev was broken at 3-3 and as he was threatening to break back in the next game, Medvedev used the controversial tactic of a surprise underarm serve to win a point at 30-30 before taking the game and then serving out the set 6-3, as he took victory in one hour and 29 minutes.

Austria's Jurgen Melzer, who retired from the singles game at the end of the 2018 season, says he continues to play doubles because he still enjoys playing tennis.
In an interview to the ATP Tour website, the 38 year old Melzer says, “The reason I still play tennis is because I love the game. You don’t make that much money playing Challengers and playing ATP 250s in doubles, but I still love the game and I still have the feeling that I have it in me to win big tournaments like Hamburg [in 2019] and I think I would have regrets if I wouldn’t have done it. I still had the feeling I have something left. The sport has given so much over the past 20 years that why not continue? I’m happy I did it because now I’m in a position where I can play the big tournaments. I had a conversation with my wife and said, ‘Okay, I want to give it a shot [in 2019]. I want to give it a try until the French Open and if I have the feeling I can still win tournaments and win big tournaments, I’ll continue. Otherwise, I’d rather be at home with my son and my wife and do something else. She was okay with that and said, ‘Okay, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do and have no regrets.’ She used to be a swimmer, so she knows how it is to stop something you love doing.”
Melzer says it has been tough playing tournaments and being away from his family but hopes to improve his ranking and reduce his playing schedule in the coming months, "I played a lot of matches, have been away from home a lot. That makes it tough, having a family. But I knew that [last] year would be a more difficult year because you have to get back to where I think I belong and get the ranking back up. Once you can play the [ATP Masters] 1000 tournaments, maybe you can reduce the schedule a little bit. Obviously I couldn’t practise as much doubles when I was Top 10 in singles. I was with a very good partner at that time with Philipp Petzschner. It helped that we were best friends off the court. We clicked; we didn’t need to practise that much to be competitive. Right now I know if I want to stay, or if I want to get even higher in my ranking, I need to practise. I have to improve things to win tournaments week-in and week-out or being able to win tournaments."
The left-handed Austrian says he does not miss playing singles as he knew he was not fit enough to compete at the highest level when he decided to retire. "I can say with 100 per cent certainty that I don’t miss [singles] one day. I have picked exactly the right moment to stop. I was still in okay shape, I beat Milos [Raonic] in my last tournament and then had to retire, never played my last match, but that’s okay for me. I have done [singles] for a very long time and I have made my peace with it and I know I’m not good enough anymore. This is the reality you have to face after being on Tour for 20 years. We don’t get younger and there are only a few, like Roger, who can still do it at this age."
