MONET Technologies, a joint venture launched by Softbank and Toyota to provide on-demand mobility services eventually with an autonomous module bus, has five new partners.
Five Japanese automakers including Isuzu Motors, Suzuki Motor Corp., Subaru, Daihatsu and Mazda will each invest 2% in the venture. Softbank and Toyota each own 35% of the company. Honda and Toyota’s truck-making unit Hino each have 10% ownership.
The venture launched in September aims to launch an on-demand mobility service with buses and cars in Japan next year. Toyota’s autonomous vehicles — based on its e-palette vehicle that debuted at CES 2018 — will eventually become a central piece of the service.
The e-Palette electric vehicle has a modular interior that is designed to allow for it to be used for a variety of services including shuttling people, packages, even mobile food preparation.
The venture involves more than simply investing capital. The automakers are also sharing data. Datasets are essential to build a mobility-as-a-service platform with autonomous vehicles, according to MONET President and CEO Junichi Miyakawa.
Earlier this year, Toyota began piloting an on-demand bus service that lets people order a ride via an app. The pilot was being conducted in the Ohara district within Toyota City. The venture also conducted a demonstration project involving a multi-purpose shuttle for Fukuyama-shi Hattori school district.

(NASDAQ: AVAV), today announced its successful completion of the first HAWK30 solar-powered high-altitude platform system (HAPS) test flight on September 11, 2019 (PT) at the NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center (AFRC) in California. HAWK30 is designed to serve as a stratospheric telecommunications platform system for delivering next-generation global connectivity.
After achieving NASA’s requirements for ground and range safety, on September 9 (PT) HAPSMobile received a limited flight release from NASA’s Airworthiness and Flight Safety Review Board to conduct a test flight of the HAWK30 aircraft in restricted airspace at AFRC.
After operations at AFRC, HAPSMobile plans to transport HAWK30 to the Hawaiian island of Lanai. HAPSMobile will accelerate preparations to perform stratospheric test flights at Lanai in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2020.

The most important prognostic factor in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is neck metastasis, which is treated by neck dissection. Although selective neck dissection (SND) is a useful tool for clinically node-negative OSCC, its efficacy for neck node-positive OSCC has not been established. Sixty-eight OSCC patients with pN1–3 disease who were treated with curative surgery using SND and/or modified-radical/radical neck dissection (MRND/RND) were retrospectively reviewed. The neck control rate was 94% for pN1–3 patients who underwent SND. The five-year overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) in pN1-3 OSCC patients were 62% and 71%, respectively. The multivariate analysis of clinical and pathological variables identified the number of positive nodes as an independent predictor of SND outcome (OS, hazard ratio (HR) = 4.98, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.48–16.72, p < 0.01; DSS, HR = 6.44, 95% CI: 1.76–23.50, p < 0.01). The results of this retrospective study showed that only SND for neck node-positive OSCC was appropriate for those with up to 2 lymph nodes that had a largest diameter ≤3 cm without extranodal extension (ENE) of the neck and adjuvant radiotherapy. However, the availability of postoperative therapeutic options for high-risk OSCC, including ENE and/or multiple positive lymph nodes, needs to be further investigated.

Toyota, SoftBank team up to develop self-driving car services
TOKYO (Reuters) – Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) and SoftBank Group Corp (9984.T) said they will team up to develop car services that rely on self-driving technology, such as hospital shuttles, as they envision a future in which fewer people drive their own vehicles.

The partnership between Japan’s top automaker and its most influential tech giant shows that even big well-funded players fear being left behind in the race to develop autonomous and connected cars.
“SoftBank alone and automakers alone can’t do everything,” said Junichi Miyakawa, chief technology officer at SoftBank Corp who will be CEO of the new company. “We want to work to help people with limited access to transportation.”
The announcement adds to a slew of deals and discussions aimed at sharing costs and securing expertise that has resulted in myriad pairings between global automakers, ride-hailing companies as well as major tech firms.

Honda Motor Co Ltd (7267.T) said on Wednesday it would invest $2.75 billion and take a 5.7 percent stake in General Motors Co’s (GM.N) Cruise self-driving vehicle unit, in which SoftBank is also an investor.
On the same day, Daimler AG (DAIGn.DE) and Renault (RENA.PA) said they may expand their cooperation to batteries, self-driving vehicles and mobility services.
Toyota and SoftBank’s new venture will start with 2 billion yen ($17.5 million) in capital, with SoftBank owning just over half of the business.
It will be called MONET, short for mobility network, and potential car services could include meal deliveries, shuttle buses as well as vehicles that offer onboard medical examinations, they said.
While both firms have been independently developing technologies for self-driving vehicles and car sharing, and each have investments in ride-hailing firms Uber Technologies [UBER.UL], Grab and Didi Chuxing, this is first time they have come together.
“We are trying to take traditional car making into new fields,” Toyota President Akio Toyoda told reporters. “We realised that Softbank shares the same vision when it comes to the future of cars, so it’s time that we partner together.”
Toyota, which has been mainly developing automated driving and artificial intelligence technologies in-house, expects the future will include convoys of shuttle bus-sized, self-driving multi-purpose vehicles used, for instance, as pay-per-use mobile restaurants and hotels.
It has been developing a service called “e-Palette” based on this concept. Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O), Didi, Uber and Pizza Hut are early partners in the project, and Toyota has said it plans to use the service to ship athletes and guests around during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
MONET will roll out an autonomous driving service using e-Palette by the second half of the 2020s, the companies said.
SoftBank will provide technology to collect and analyze transportation data to ensure cars are efficiently dispatched when and where they’re needed, they said.
SoftBank has its own autonomous vehicle unit, SB Drive, which has been developing self-driving technology for buses.

Toyota, SoftBank setting up mobility services joint venture
TOKYO — Japan’s No. 1 automaker Toyota Motor Corp. and technology giant SoftBank Group Corp. are setting up a joint venture to create mobility services in what they called a “united Japan” effort” to face global competition.
The venture, Monet Technologies Corp. is meant to be running by the end of March. It will work on on-demand vehicle services, food deliveries and hospital shuttles with onboard medical exams, the companies said Thursday in a news conference at a Tokyo hotel.
“This may look like an unusual combination,” SoftBank’s executive in charge of technology, Junichi Miyakawa, acknowledged, referring to the odd-couple union of an old-style manufacturer like Toyota with a relative newcomer like SoftBank. The energy and telecoms company’s past tie-ups have tended to be with overseas startups.
“But Japan must compete with the rest of the world. That is why we are shaking hands today,” Miyakawa said after shaking hands with his counterpart at Toyota, Shigeki Tomoyama.
Tomoyama said the joint venture will deliver services that combine Toyota’s manufacturing know-how with SoftBank’s technology prowess, which includes the Internet of Things, IoT, technology.
The services will roll out in Japan first, but a global expansion is in the works, the companies said.
Toyota is developing autonomous vehicles in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Monet plans to roll out a business featuring autonomous vehicle services by the second half of 2020, they said.
Automakers around the world are forming tie-ups in the race to develop the next-generation of transportation, such as self-driving cars.
Earlier this week, Toyota’s Japanese rival Honda Motor Co. said it was investing $2.75 billion in GM Cruise, an autonomous-vehicle unit run by General Motors Co. of the U.S.

Toyota and Softbank form Monet mobility company, plan autonomous services

The new company, to be called Monet Technologies, will be established before the end of 2018 with a 50.25-percent ownership by Softbank and the remaining 49.75 percent by Toyota. The two companies plan to spend only about $17.5 million initially but will increase this depending on the success of the venture. Softbank, which has more than $100 billion of assets under management and is considered the world’s biggest tech fund, is the same company that in May invested $2.25 billion in self-driving car company Cruise, which currently is tied with General Motors and Honda. Softbank is also a major investor in several of the world’s most popular ride-hail services including Uber, Didi and Grab. The latter, which is based in Southeast Asia, received a $1b investment from Toyota in June. Toyota e-Palette self-driving electric mobility concept As for the new company Monet, whose name is a portmanteau of “mobility” and “network,” it will initially offer a ride-hail service in Japan for several public agencies and partner companies. However, as early as 2020, Monet will launch an autonomous delivery service based around Toyota’s e-Palette, a self-driving shuttle bus that was shown in concept form earlier this year. Possibilities include demand-focused just-in-time mobility services, such as meal deliveries vehicle where food is prepared while on the move, hospital shuttles where onboard medical examinations can be performed, mobile offices, and many more. While Monet is expected to initially offer these services in Japan only, the plan is to expand globally. “Softbank alone and an automaker alone can’t do everything alone,” Junichi Miyakawa, Softbank’s CTO who is also head of Monet, said in a statement. “It is better to work together.
