My Take: So now many want to talk about Milwaukee's Juneteenth? And a message to the "outsiders" who questioned our Juneteenth celebrations.
As of right now, it’s the first day of Summer. But before I get to that, I want to talk about Juneteenth Day in my home city of Milwaukee. This year, we have celebrated 52 years of the occasion that was announced in 1865. Milwaukee has one of the longest-running celebrations of Juneteenth in the north. Everyone knows this. It’s not a secret that the city has been doing this for so long. If you…

Many of us are taught that slavery came to an end with the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, but for enslaved people in Texas, freedom didn’t come until June 19, 1865.
Swipe to learn about the history of Juneteenth, and why it’s a celebration of freedom, culture, and progress.

Juneteenth (19 June), or Emancipation Day, commemorates the day US troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the government had abolished slavery, more than two-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect on 1 January 1863.
The Emancipation Proclamation freed at least 3.5 million enslaved people in Confederate states (states supporting slavery) during the US Civil War (1861-65). Although Lincoln initially freed enslaved Africans so they could join the US military, the goalpost moved when he decided saving the Union (non-slaveholding states) meant abolishing slavery.
Many enslavers took refuge in Texas with their enslaved people, seeing it as a haven for slavery. As Union states gained the upper hand, many Black people gained freedom, but not those in Texas.
While local Juneteenth celebrations saw a resurgence in the late 20th century, US President Joe Biden made it a federal holiday in 2021.
Unfortunately, freedom did not come with reparations and equality. To this day, descendants of enslaved Africans suffer physical and mental ailments—such as high blood pressure and kidney disease, to name a few—are nine times poorer than their white counterparts, and Black men are four times more likely to be imprisoned than white men.
Could the payment of reparations for US slavery complete the memory of Juneteenth? Let us know in the comments.

Juneteenth aka Freedom Day.
Juneteenth is a centuries long, Black American commemoration day for the end of American chattel slavery, particularly for the ancestors who learned of their freedom in Galveston, Texas in 1865 — two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Although they're no longer in America and we're no longer culturally the same, Juneteenth is also celebrated by the Mascogos, the descendants of Seminole Indians who escaped America at the tail end of the Gullah Wars (1739-1858), in Nacimiento de Los Negros, Mexico.
Up until 1997, the American flag (sewn by Grace Wisher) was the only flag Black Americans waved during the parade and overall celebration. Since then there are only two other flags that are raised and waved: the official Juneteenth flag (made by Mr. “Boston Ben” Haith) and the Black American Heritage Flag (made by Mr. Melvin Charles & Mr. Gleason T. Jackson).
Red, white, and blue. Red, black, and gold. That's it. This is not a Pan-Africanism takeover day. Keep your colonizing ethnocide to yourself and reserve it for cleansing your shit.

Christopher Wiggins at The Advocate:
The Trump administration has removed federal recognition of Pride Month, Black History Month, Holocaust Remembrance Day, and other cultural observances, cutting off decades of recognizing marginalized communities within the federal government. A Defense Intelligence Agency memo obtained by NBC News orders the immediate pause of all agency-led commemorations, special observances, and employee resource groups, part of a larger effort to gut diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, or DEIA, programs across federal agencies. The directive follows executive orders Trump signed on his first day back in office, including “Ending Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Preferencing” and “Initial Rescissions of Harmful Executive Orders and Actions.” Federal holidays, such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth, will still be observed, but all workplace events, programming, and moments of recognition tied to these observances are now prohibited. [...]

Critics say Trump is sending a message that marginalized communities “do not count”
The administration’s decision has been met with immediate backlash. On MSNBC Friday afternoon, anchor and Washington Post opinion columnist Jonathan Capehart said the move sends a chilling message to federal employees and communities nationwide. “What it says to those employees is that the federal government, from the President of the United States on down, does not care about you,” Capehart said. “For someone to be able to walk into their workplace knowing that their agency, their bosses, acknowledge the fact that they’re African American or that they’re Jewish, or that they’re Native American or AAPI or LGBTQ, it makes that person feel welcomed and that their contributions are valued. And what we’re seeing from the president on down is that if you are not a white, straight, Christian, cisgender male, you do not count.”
Shame on the Trump Regime’s Defense Intelligence Agency for issuing a memo that erases recognition and halts commemorations for any non-white-focused holiday, such as MLK Jr. Day, Juneteenth, Black History Month, LGBTQ+ Pride Month, and Women’s History Month.

Yes, the US government will no longer observe Holocaust remembrance, among other days.
Just in case anyone was still pretending the new regime isn't Nazis, or isn't antisemitic just because they pretend to be "pro-Israel."

Also, to be clear: the executive branch cannot legally stop recognizing a holiday established by Congressional legislation. And It is your duty to continue to remember and honour these days and what they stand for, regardless of whether the government does so.
