Happy National Ice Cream Month! President Reagan declared July National Ice Cream Month and July 15 (the third Sunday in July) National Ice Cream Day in 1984. Here are some sweet documents from our holdings. 🍦🍨

Patent file for ice cream confection known as “Eskimo Pie.” (NARA ID 1404539)

This is the January 1922 patent of the now-iconic Eskimo Pie, an ice cream bar covered in chocolate. It was invented by Christian K. Nelson and the patent was co-assigned to Russell Stover.

Good Humor Truck. (NARA ID 5916725)

Harry B. Burt created the Good Humor Bar, a chocolate-covered ice cream bar on a stick. To grow his business, he operated this Good Humor Truck that circulated until the 1970s.

“Good Humor” Ice Cream Suckers Ad (NARA ID 5916723)

This Good Humor ad served as evidence in Good Humor Corporation of America v. The Popsicle Corporation of the United States and Joe Lowe Corporation. It was generally understood that Good Humor and Popsicle were distinct products. In 1925, the companies reached a licensing agreement that stated Popsicle could make products under 4.5 percent butter fat as a form of sherbet, although that term had no official definition. When Popsicle made a “Milk Popsicle” in 1931 containing 4.48 percent butter fat, Good Humor sued. Who won the heated competition? Find out in Prologue.

This photograph shows the mask worn by "The Beast Of Jersey."

Edward Paisnel was born on November 27, 1925, in Jersey, Channel Islands. Little is known about his early life, but he appeared to live an unremarkable existence. He married Joan Paisnel, who ran a children's home on the island, and was known in the community as a family man who would often play Santa Claus for local children during the holidays. This public persona stood in stark contrast to the horrors he would later unleash on the island.

Between 1960 and 1971, Paisnel committed a series of brutal attacks on women and children in Jersey. His modus operandi was chilling—he would break into homes at night, wearing this grotesque homemade mask and disguising his appearance with wigs and old clothing. He often donned nail-studded wristlets, which he used to subdue his victims.

The victims, ranging from young children to women in their 30s, were often sexually assaulted after being bound and gagged. Paisnel's ability to evade capture for over a decade, despite the best efforts of the Jersey police, earned him the moniker "The Beast of Jersey." His crimes sparked widespread fear, with residents living in constant dread of the next attack.

The Jersey police launched an extensive manhunt to capture the elusive predator. The police were puzzled by the attacker’s ability to evade detection and the apparent randomness of his crimes. Despite numerous leads and a growing profile of the perpetrator, Paisnel remained at large for years.

His luck finally ran out on July 10, 1971, when he was arrested not far from his home. That evening, Paisnel was spotted driving erratically and failed to stop at a police roadblock. This reckless behaviour caught the attention of the officers, who pursued him and eventually stopped his car. Inside, they found a number of disturbing items that confirmed their worst fears: a homemade mask with deformed features, a wig, and various items of clothing that matched descriptions provided by Paisnel's victims.

In November 1971, Edward Paisnel stood trial for 13 counts of assault, rape, and sodomy, as well as several counts of indecent assault on women and children. He was found guilty and sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Mark enters the dining hall, which was now all decked out for the End of The Year party instead of being set up for lunch, with streamers hanging from the ceiling supports and balloons wrapped around the pillars. Music blares through the speakers and the students take to the dance floor, while the rest of the students mingle at the refreshments table or the chairs set up throughout the room.

His eyes scan the room, searching for the six familiar faces that he's come to love over the past nine months. He's able to spot the group through the crowd, but one bright smile seems to be missing: yours. Where he usually finds you messing around with Allen and Hyuck, or gossiping with Julie and Minnie, or maybe even catching Jiwoong up on the latest TikTok trends, you were nowhere to be found. Mark found himself stepping closer to his friends, sending them a soft smile with a wave.

“Mark! Finally,” Donghyuck draws out, pulling the older man into a tight hug.

“Yeah, yeah. I didn't take that long,” Mark responds, rolling his eyes. Once again, he scans the room, searching for you as hard as he can. “So, uh, where's Y/N?”

Donghyuck and Allen send each other a quick look, quite impossible for Mark to ignore. “She was with us a little bit ago, but ran off to talk to Jaehyun and Jungwoo,” Allen explains, a comforting smile playing on his lips.

“When you say a little bit ago, I'm guessing right as I walked in?” Mark laughs, but deep down inside, he feels a pang shoot through his heart.

“Markie, come on,” Donghyuck tells him, sighing. “You should really try to find her and talk.”

“Hyuck's right,” Allen starts. “I think a good talk is all you guys need. She wants to talk too, she's just a little scared, that's all.”

Jiwoong comes up to his side, resting his arm across the boy's shoulders. “You just gotta take a deep breath, okay?” He says calmly, with a sweet smile. “We believe in you, man. We believe in you both.”

“Hey, if I go talk to her, you gonna introduce me to your little boyfriend?” Mark teases, noticing the way Jiwoong's ears turn bright red as he hides his embarrassment with a laugh.

“Sure, sure,” Jiwoong softly lets out, letting go of him to go and talk to Minnie.

“I think we saw those three over by the refreshments table,” Allen tells Mark, eyes searching for your tall brother and friend. “You go find her, we'll be right here when you finally kiss and make up.” With that, he sends a wink his way and gives him a gentle shove towards the other side of the room.

Mark lets out a soft laugh before he continues his way to the refreshments table. He eyes the table up and down, looking for any sign of you, Jaehyun, or Jungwoo. He finally locks eyes with your brother, sending him a sweet smile as he makes his way towards him.

“Mark, my guy, looking sharp tonight,” the older man comments, reaching out to dap him up. “You just missed Y/N, her and Jungwoo just left for the bathroom.”

“Ah, come on, man,” Mark starts, shaking his head. “Who said I'm looking for your sister? Maybe I want to talk to you, we don't talk enough.”

A sly smile grows on Jaehyun's face, “yeah, because you'd rather talk to my sister.” He teases, chuckling. “It's fine, man. Would rather it be you than any other guy on campus.”

His cheeks burn at the man's comment, trying to cover the red tint with his hands. “You should try to find her, talk a bit or something,” Jaehyun continues, patting Mark's shoulder. “Meanwhile, I'm going to go find Jungwoo, make sure he doesn't get into any trouble.”

With that, he steps away from the refreshments table and towards the bathrooms. Mark takes a deep breath, anticipating the inevitable chat he's going to have with you. He's about to follow Jaehyun, breaking away from the same table, when a hand tangles with his and pulls him back into a tight hug.

“Markie, oh my gosh,” the person squeals, the familiarity of their voice ringing through Mark's ears. They pull back, smiling brightly at the boy.

“Karina, wow, uhm, hi,” Mark mutters, confused but still sending a small smile back. “Shouldn't you be with Hendery? Where's he at?”

“He's with some other girl,” she scoffs, rolling her eyes. Her smile is quick to return, though, as she starts to tug Mark towards the dance floor. “Soooo, you should totally dance with me. I'm just so beaten up by the break-up with him, I need some Markie time.”

Mark digs his heels into the floor, stopping the both of them in their tracks. Karina turns back to look at him with furrowed eyebrows, “What's up?”

“Karina, I don't think it's wise to go right back to your ex after you broke up with him,” he tells her gently, releasing his arm from her grasp. “Besides, I was about to go find Y/N, so if you'll just let me-”

“Mark, I love you,” she blurts out with haste. She doesn't even wait for the boy to reply before she continues, “if I'm being honest, I wasn't all that happy with Hendery. I wanted to be with you the whole time, I was just scared that you wouldn't want me back, so I didn't really want to sabotage a good relationship.” She pauses, staring up at Mark with sparkling eyes. “Please, Mark, let's try this again.”

Mark is speechless, mouth agape at the sudden confession. He's about to step away from the girl, tell her she's just confused, when he finally spots you amongst the crowd. You're standing not too far away from them, watching everything go down. Karina's eyes follow Mark's line of sight, catching you standing there as well.

“Don't tell me you still have feelings for her?” She asks, crossing her arms in front of her chest.

“What are you even talking about, Karina?” Mark questions, furrowing his eyebrows. He wants nothing more for you to join him by his side, but you're disappearing back into the crowd before he can say anything to you. He moves to chase after you, but once again, Karina grabs onto his hand.

“Don't act stupid, and definitely don't assume that I'm too stupid to notice the way you look at her,” Karina continues, sighing. “The way you've always looked at her.”

“Listen, I really don't want to talk about this with you,” Mark tells her, trying to escape from her grasp.

“What? Like you're going to talk about this with her?” She asks. “Because you two have been so good at communicating recently.”

When he stays silent, she continues to speak. “I always knew you had a thing for her, but I went out with you anyway,” she starts, finally letting go of his hand when his struggle begins to die down. “I don't know, I guess I thought I would be able to win you over. But, no matter what, you still looked at her like she hung all the stars in the sky.” She pauses, looking away and avoiding his eyes. “When I started talking to Hendery, I thought I might be able to get your attention finally. If I was able to break up with you and start paying attention to another man, then maybe, just maybe, my feelings would be reciprocated.”

“Karina,” he lets out, so quiet the blaring music almost drowns it out.

“Why couldn’t I have all your attention?” She questions, finally locking eyes with him. “Why does she have to be on your mind all the time? What did I do wrong?”

“You did nothing wrong, honest to God.” He answers, taking a deep breath. “It was all me, I tried to distract myself from her and ended up just hurting you. And I’m sorry, I was blinded by my own feelings, and I shouldn’t have used you to make myself feel better.”

Karina sends him a small smile, nodding in agreement. “Yeah, you are in the wrong, huh?” She asks, letting out a light laugh. Before she can continue, microphone feedback rings throughout the large room, causing the two to wince as they cover their ears.

“Y/N Jung, what on Earth are you doing?” They can hear the Dean call out as you step onto the small stage at the end of the room.

The rest of the study group soon join Mark and Karina in the middle of the dance floor, watching you shoo the Dean away, moving around the stage to escape him. “This cannot be good,” Julie whispers to everyone, the music dying down in anticipation of what you were possibly planning to say.

“Oh, Jesus Christ, what am I doing?” You mutter to yourself, but the microphone still picks it up, and it softly sounds through the speakers on either side of the stage. Your eyes wander through the crowd, finally finding Mark in between all of your classmates. A soft smile falls on your lips, and he’s quick to return it. Before you know it, the three words you’ve been avoiding for weeks are tumbling out of your mouth before you can stop yourself. “I love you,” you speak into the microphone, soft gasps echoing through the room. You notice the way his eyes widen, but you continue. “Mark Lee, I love you.”

The Dean instantly stops in his tracks, intrigued by the student’s sudden confession. Johnny joins him by his side silently, holding a bag of popcorn and offering the Dean a handful. Meanwhile, the rest of the study group stands behind Mark with mouths wide open, taken aback by your outburst. Their eyes dart back and forth between you and Mark, who seem to be frozen in his spot.

Donghyuck elbows Mark, a little too hard as Mark lets out a small ‘ow,’ before the man remembers the situation at hand. He looks back up at you, slowly inching through the crowd, avoiding all of the eyes that follow his every movement. You step down from the stage, passing the microphone back to the Dean, who was now shoveling popcorn into his mouth alongside Johnny.

He finally meets you in the middle, smiling softly down at you as he takes your hands in his. The embarrassment hits you right then and there, looking into his eyes and seeing all of your classmates in your peripheral vision. “God, you really did make me wait too long for this shit,” Mark told you quietly, head reeling from the sound of your giggles. “I love you so fucking much, man.”

“Wow, ‘man?’ So romantic,” you comment, rolling your eyes playfully.

“Just shut up and kiss me already,” he replies, already leaning in. His hands break away from yours, finding their way down to your waist to pull you the rest of the way.

When his lips finally meet yours, you're too enamored by the vanilla flavor that invades your senses to hear your friends hooting and hollering. “Those are my fucking parents, y'all!” Donghyuck shouts, laughing alongside Allen.

Mark shies away from the kiss, and both his lips and cheeks are tinted a nice red color as he stares down at you, twinkling in adoration. He becomes aware of his surroundings, remembering that you're quite literally in the middle of all of your classmates. “Let's get out of here, okay?”
