I have a question:

We all know that in a elvin marriage they choose the last name that has more distinction, (like how Della chose Aldens last name, because that was a "legendary" name, as said in chapter 22 of nightfall.)

and also what message a couple is trying to send. (like how Juline chose Keslers last name, because she was implying she is not ashamed of her husband,)

So, my question is, how do they choose a last name if neither of them are, prominent, per se?

And what if none of the both sides of the party is willing to use the others last name, or what if they both want to ditch their own last name all-together?

Do they have a choice about choosing a new last name if they wished? or would that be illegal?

And while i talk about last names, i also have to ask,

Do last names affect the match list? would it be true that since Fitz is a vacker, does he get people from other long legacies or just people that are his type?

We do not know much about the matchmaking system, other than the fact its used to give you compatible people--while some say the matchmaking system should be used as suggestions, many also say that they should be used to find your match--does it really matter what your beliefs are? are all the questions asked to find your type actually calculated in the final list, or does it come down to last names?

And another thought, do your own personal opinions affect the match list? not just in the questionnaire, but what if places such as wear you buy clothes, eat, where you live, your style of living (which can all be tracked by your registry pendant) affect it?

So, I'm curious, what are your thoughts on this?

So an AU where Mat isn’t Ta’veren and becomes our POV in the Black Tower.

Now the first dilemma I faced was how much Mat should be integrated into the main plot, especially given that the Black Tower isn’t created until book five. So here’s what I got so far input for what this goofy little guy should get up to is welcome.

So after Winter Night, Perrin, Rand, and Egwene go with Morraine and Lan leaving our non-Ta’veren ordinary guy Mat behind. Now Mat, not knowing the details, is quite upset because as far as he knows his two best friends just ditched him to go on an adventure without him. When Nynaeve goes after them Mat tries to tag along but Nynaeve very firmly sends him back home. However, Ta’veren or not this is still Mat Cauthon we’re talking about so he goes after them himself. He spends the rest of Eye of The World having narrow misses with the plot, running into Thom at Whitebridge after the Myrdraal incident and drags that poor man all the way to Camlyn only to discover that he once again missed his friends and now has no idea where they’ve gone.

In The Great Hunt we find Mat traveling with Thom and Dana as an apprentice Gleeman, until they meet up with Rand in Cairihan. Rand tells him about the the horn but leaves out the whole, he’s the dragon reborn bit. Now this version of Mat doesn’t believe he’s a hero but he also has yet to discover Consequences so he really wants to be one, so he immediately insists on joining Rand to find the horn of Valere. Rand tries the tried and true method of being the worst to your loved ones to drive them away for their own good but while it DOES upset Mat, you aren’t shaking him that easily especially since he’s already invited to that party Rand and friends needs to break into. Things end up going relatively the same from their and they all go to Falme, Mat gets a late reveal there that Rand is the Dragon Reborn, we have Seanchen problems and Mat is still the one to blow the horn of Valere.

The Dragon Reborn baby, in order to try and keep Mat safely out of the plot Rand convinces him to escort the girls back to Tarvalon. Now no one but Rand and Perrin know he blew the horn of Valere and at their urging Mat decides to keep it that way, but he quickly finds that when your a man and not Ta’veren or the known sounder of the horn of Valere you very quickly get bored of the White Tower. After spending some time gambling at every tavern in Tarvalon and training a bit with the warders and Gawyn and Galad, the girls give him the letter for Morgause and send him on his way no Armylin permission slip required. Things go pretty similarly as they do in the book, Mat picks up a depressed Thom, discovers a plot to kill the girl’s, gets some fireworks and breaks into the Stone, though he is now slightly less effective without his supernatural luck.

The Shadow Rising finds our boy Mat feeling severely put out and a bit helpless. The girls as usual were less then grateful for the rescue and Rand and Perrin are too busy to talk to him. He still goes to Egwene for advice and hears about the Red Stone Door and still goes through it, though this time he actually gets to ask his three questions before getting kicked out since there’s now only One Ta’veren in there. Mat’s still contemplating what his confusing answers mean when Rand pops out, and things continue from there as planned. This time however Mat does not go to the Wastes and instead joins Thom and Julin as unwanted bodyguards for Nynaeve and Elayne. Hilarity ensues. More importantly however during the Tanchico arc Mat starts considering the possibility of learning to channel. After all, the girls aren’t wrong about him not being much help against the black ajah without channeling. So using the scraps of information he has he tries to teach himself how to channel. But it’s not going so well. However once they reach Salidar he finds a certain someone who might be able to help with that…

In Fires of Heaven and onwards we get more of Mat feeling helpless to protect his friends and using his most powerful weapon, his puppy dog eyes, he gets Logain to grudgingly agree to help teach him though one problem is that Logain is gentled but Mat won’t let that stop him. Egwene shows up, Logain is de-gentled and Mat get’s the bright idea to take the bow healed Logain and head to the Black Tower. Mat proceeds to get tangled up in both the Black Tower sub plot and Elayne’s Succession plot line. He also finds Olver at some point. That’s all I got so far

Cultural context: in Brazil there's a big party that happens from June to August (it's called Junine/Juline/Augustine Party when it's not a quermesse) and it's common for churches to throw big parties that are called 'quermesses' and it's common to have A LOT of food, bingo, games, prizes and a bunch of other things. I always help on them at my parent's church and this year I'm responsible for the 'correio elegante' or, literally translating, elegant mail! You can buy cards and flowers to send to someone you're interested and we'll deliver it for you!

Kesler and Juline where cannonly childhood lovers, I think Juline had a temper and a hard time controlling her ability, and that Kesler was her alchemy tutor and wears dorky glasses similar to Milo Thatch.

I have so so many headcanons

Elves show affection with loved ones (best friends, family, lovers, etc) by pressing foreheads together. The longer it lasts, the deeper the affections are.

Friends and family will do it for about the same duration as a normal hug

Lovers and friendships that are beyond love will obviously last longer.

Also I love childhood lover trope and that is canon now, Shannon is wrong. They were childhood lovers. Juline nearly failed her mid-term so badly due to her somewhat newly manifested Froster abilities being affected by her emotions making the beakers freeze over. It was a whole thing.

Kesler and Juline had known each other for years, like years!

Kesler fell first, Juline phased through the entire planet falling for him

Juline has had a fascination with human stuff for ages. Kesler just thinks it's funky but if Juline's blabbering about floppy disks he doesn't care what a 'computer' is, she's talking and he's listening.

Juline has constantly cold hands, Kesler holds them to keep her warm

Kesler likes baking, its like alchemy but you can add as many tart berries as you want, say less

Eda makes awesome pastries, Juline makes...interesting soups

will you survive? Will you need an elixir? Is it moving or is it just the smoke giving you hallucinations?

Now onto Kesler

- as the youngest of his family, Kesler has at least three people telling him what to do at all times

- and none of them could agree

- he and his siblings were born more or less close in age (if you count close as 4-8 years)

- his youngest older sister was in Foxfire along with Kesler which means whenever Kesler had any trouble in class she was right there to both brag, and help (it was her job to be both unhelpful and very helpful, it's sibling law)

- Kesler got his love and knack for Alchemy from his grandfather who wasn't too shabby himself but Kesler was a natural

- he loves his siblings but hanging out with his grandfather doing random alchemy experiments was just their thing

- Kesler was terrible with Elementalism so much so his sister would occasionally take the long route to her classes to check on him in the Healing Room

- you could tell if Kesler Dizznee was within twenty feet of you if you could hear the tell tale sound of glass rattling in a bag

- he was in the same class year as Juline (I ignore canon) so when Juline Dizznee needed a tutor guess who was signed up as the sacrificial lamb

“Alden, congratulations on…genetics?” Edaline said; not quite sure where she was going with the sentence. 

Alden laughed. “Thank you very much, Edaline. Is your sister here?”

“Juline? You invited her, I'd assume she'd show up!” Edaline reassured Alden. “Have you seen Grady?”

Alden pointed over to the dance floor, where Grady was dancing with a girl in a pink gown. 

Before heading to the dance floor, Edaline asked Alden ”are you coming?” 

Both of them headed over to the dance floor, which was bathed in a soft blue light that poured from the chandelier, mixed with the moonlight from the massive windows.

“May I have this dance, Alden?” Edaline lent out her hand to Alden. Alden grabbed her hand and they waltzed. 

“You’re amazing at this,” Alden whispered to Edaline. 

Edaline blushed, “my father makes Juline and I take lessons.”

As the song ended, Edaline said “I’m going to find Grady now, you're a wonderful dance partner.” She smiled his way and left. 

“Did anyone tell you your jerkin looks beautiful in this lighting?” Grady smiled as he talked to a tall, black-haired elf, who was clearly not picking up on Grady's flirts. 

Seeing this hilarious attempt at picking up a guy, Edaline held back laughter as she said “Grady.”

“Oh, hi Edaline,” Grady said, his eyes widening upon seeing her in formalwear for the first time, “you look stunning,” he blushed. 

“Who were you talking to?”

“A mannn,” Grady smiled. “I don't think he was very interested in me, however.” Grady frowned and grabbed her hand. 

“Wanna dance?” He smiled and offered his hand. Edaline was flattered. She was not used to this much attention, she flew under the radar. She wasn't very used to dancing with guys, but she had offered to with Alden for some reason, and there was something about Grady, she didn't know if it was the lighting, his outfit, or something entirely, but she just couldn't resist.

“Of course, Grady!” Edaline grabbed his hand and led him to the dance floor.

Grady was a clumsier dancer than Alden, but way more energetic about it. He kept stepping on Edaline’s feet and apologizing, but kept dancing. Edaline was enjoying herself, even despite Grady stepping on her shoes constantly. 

“This is fun,” Grady yelled. Edaline noticed that he looked excited but a lot paler than when he entered the party. 

Its probably the lighting, she thought to herself. “Grady, are you alright?” 

“Never better! Unrelated note, where is Alden?” Grady asked Edaline, as if they hadn’t been together for five minutes. 

“I think he’s over there,” Edaline gestured to where Alden was, hanging out on the stairs and having a drink. 

Grady started to leave, then jerked around the last second. “You’re coming with!” 

Edaline felt herself moving. Whether she wanted to or not, she couldn't tell.

It's the Democrat media complex at work, though they’ve become more shameless since the Obama era. After Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in 2016, there was a conscious effort to disregard the truth to protect Democrats and help them no matter what. It’s the only explanation for the flurry of ethical and overall journalistic malpractice that we’ve seen, from the Russian collusion hoax to Hunter Biden’s laptop; we do not hate the media enough for their overt corruption. 

And now, NBC News is reporting through some unnamed Kamala Harris spokesperson that Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who the vice president selected as her running mate to appease the far-left elements of the Democratic Party, lied about his military record:

Tim Walz "misspoke" in a 2018 video circulated by the Harris campaign earlier this week that included the vice presidential candidate talking about his handling of weapons "in war," a campaign spokesperson said Friday.  The clarification comes after Republicans, led by veteran and vice presidential candidate JD Vance, have attacked Walz over his military record.  “Governor Walz would never insult or undermine any American’s service to this country — in fact, he thanks Senator Vance for putting his life on the line for our country. It’s the American way," the Harris campaign spokesperson said in a statement.  "In making the case for why weapons of war should never be on our streets or in our classrooms, the Governor misspoke. He did handle weapons of war and believes strongly that only military members trained to carry those deadly weapons should have access to them, unlike Donald Trump and JD Vance who prioritize the gun lobby over our children,” the spokesperson added.  The video clip of Walz's previous remarks shows him discussing gun control and referring to his own military background. “We can make sure that those weapons of war, that I carried in war, is the only place where those weapons are at,” Walz says in the clip posted by Harris’ campaign on Tuesday.  Walz's 24 years in the military included serving overseas and supporting forward units, but he was not deployed to a combat zone. 

So, isn’t this an admission of stolen valor? To compound this matter, CNN’s Laura Coates

interviewed Tim Walz's former Command Sergeant Major Doug Julin, who gave a damning interview, indicating that the Minnesota governor knew about his unit’s deployment to Iraq in late 2004, a good six-to-seven months of foreknowledge before turning in his retirement papers. It sure seems like the man cut and ran—literally.

hi yes i just wanted to say it's a joy to see another Ruewen stan (Grady and Edaline are my favorite characters and I a have to scroll for an eternity to find the slightest content on them their story is so devastating I LOVE IT.)

my dude, the ruewens are such complex and interesting characters. of course i stan them. and you're right, it's sad to see that people skip out on how fascinating they are. [warning: i rambled a l o t about them so i put my screaming under the cut.]

on a surface level, grady's the overprotective dad, but once you dive deeper, you see a lot more. you see that he used to be a signature problem child. you see that his ability messed him up in the head for a while. you see that it still haunts him today, even though it's been centuries since bronte pulled him off the wrong path - take the facility fight in nightfall, for example. when he tells sophie never again after she enhances him. you can see that while he has a reputation of being a father figure that's scary towards anyone that poses a threat to his kid(s), he's scared of himself, too. possibly more so than everyone else. you can see that instead of running away from himself, he stands his ground. he stays where he's needed. he's stubborn sometimes, like with how it took a while for sophie to convince him the black swan wasn't as bad as he thought, but he's open to change when he sees good reason. if he needs to change something about himself in order to be a better person towards the people he loves, he'll do it. he's also one of the only adults in this series that sees the kids as kids first, not soldiers. and so he's one of the only adults that'll throw himself in the front lines and shove the kids back, because they're kids and he's not and he can do it. he can do anything for them, because he's a dad and that's what good dads do.

edaline's a lot more complex than people realize at first glance, too. at first, we just think of her as the sweet mom. but she's a lot more than that. she's a sister. she's a sister to an ambitious froster that decided i don't care what the rules say, i'll love whoever i want. i think a lot of people forget that edaline watched pretty much all of kesline's early relationship in real time. she heard all the whispers and rumors. she saw all the turned backs and glares. and it seems safe to say that she held her sister's hand when kesler wasn't there to, right? and while it's clear that juline's definitely a lot more bold about how she expresses her emotions sometimes - take that time she bitch slapped forkle for not bringing dex back in book 1 (AS SHE SHOULD'VE), for example. we've never seen edaline go that far, but let's be real, she totally could. she's a talented conjurer whose limits seem to be pretty extensive - with sophie's enhancing, she was able to conjure away falling boulders before they hit the ground in book 5. while she was running. also, she's better than grady at wrangling literal dinosaurs. she may be soft-spoken and appear fragile from how grief over jolie wrecked her so thoroughly for almost twenty years, but she's strong. she's strong physically and mentally, on top of giving excellent hugs and being a good mom to anyone who needs it.

now, speaking of jolie - jolie is extremely underrated. i have to give shannon credit for fleshing out a character that died pre-canon well enough that it makes some of us readers, who don't even know her as well as the author because she gets very little page time, go insane over jolie's story nonetheless. jolie ruewen's reputation now is one of a tragedy; even her name means beautiful ruin, as was succinctly discussed here. but there was more to her story than its ending. she loved parties and dresses and cosmetics. she was scared of shadows, at least when she was little. vertina was her best friend, her ultimate confidant. she was a huge gremlin fan - which, of course, is where we start to get into the sadder parts of her story. she met brant when they were kids because they wanted the same gremlin, and they ended up being best friends. who shared custody of the gremlin, if i recall correctly. they were best friends who fell in love somewhere along the way. they loved each other enough that they were willing to push through the stigmas and rumors over them being a bad match, just for each other. they loved each other enough that they were willing to maintain a strong long distance relationship while jolie was in the elite levels. and they almost made it. they were going to get married - we see evidence of it in edaline's office (The Room Where Stuff Goes to Die, if that rings a bell), with all the butterfly themed wedding decorations. but then, of course, rebellion involvements between the two of them respectively mixed disastrously. jolie tried being a double agent between the black swan and the neverseen, and when she saw that the neverseen were destroying the person she'd fallen in love with, her efforts of pulling him out of the wreckage were rewarded by him burning her alive. killing her before she got the ending she deserved.

and all of the ideas i crammed into those three ridiculously long paragraphs aren't exhaustive of who they were as people. they only talk about the canon bits of them we see; they don't even include how they affect each other. how edaline still remembers all of jolie's favorite desserts, because she's a mother and mothers don't forget. how part of why grady is so protective of sophie, his second daughter, his second chance, is because he can't lose her like he lost jolie. how jolie had grady's hair and edaline's eyes. how they waited almost twenty years to turn jolie's room into something new, because it hurt too much to change anything about it back then. and then, of course, there's how sophie fits into it all - how she felt like she could never measure up to jolie for so long, how it seems like vertina will never care about her the way she cared about jolie (not that it seems like either of them mind that); how jolie cared about project moonlark even if she never met sophie, how sophie spent months trying to bring justice to a girl she never met, to a girl that all she really knew about was that she was loved and deserved better.

canon tells us a lot about the ruewens, but the ruewens are so fascinating that it doesn't feel like enough. which is where fanon should come in, but alas, it seems like us avid ruewen stans are few and far enough in between that we're gonna have to make the content we want ourselves.

Im SOO late to this party but here’s my two cents;

In Keeper it seems elves have a naming convention for siblings, (Tam Dai/ Linh Hai, Edaline Kelia/ Juline Kalea, Dex/ Lex/ Bex/Rex, Bianna Amberley/ Fitz Avery <- less so for them but u see where I’m going).

Brant Alger / Kenric Elgar.

It’s literally the exact same name with different spellings— which I don’t know… could just be a coincidence or it’s a way for Shannon to signal some kind of relation between characters. I personally choose to believe they’re brothers because there’s an really interesting parallel in the tragedy of both of their lives that is spurred on by inequality and societal rules. They also represent two very different ideologies of seizing change and power in the world.

Tinker has less of a connection but that’s because she has like three pages in flashback and has one known name 😭. But drawing from her description as a tall (the tallest elf she’s ever seen), red headed who is afraid of fire. Who else is tall, a red head and is probably afraid of fire now? Also she is described as having grey eyes. You know who has grey eyes? Brant .

Tinker obviously has some connection to a pyrokinetic, and when in doubt? Go for an angst heavy option. She’s a Black Swan agent who’s sent to investigate Jolie Ruewens death— only to find out it’s her own brother ? That’s crazy. Then her other brother gets killed by her brothers mentor? Even crazier. Maybe she goes into hiding in fear that what she knows would get her killed too. So many thoughts to be had,,, Fathdon siblings my beloathed 🫶

thinking abt how Edaline and Juline fall on the opposite sides of the same spectrum of "did i subvert those expectations of yours, S O C I E T Y"

you’re right they are rebellious in two different ways

while Juline did it intentionally she knew what was gonna happen when she married a talentless she knew what was gonna happen when she had children that where a bad match, while the triplets where definitely not intentional she didn’t treat them any different. she joined and eventually lead a rebel organization, Edaline was different.

she held those parties she was a noble socialite, she married the third match on her list, she was an emissary, she had one child like most nobles did, she held extravagant parties at her house in Sophie’s future bedroom. then her daughter feel in love with a talentless and she not only didn’t stop the wedding or disown her daughter. she helped her plan and make decorations she supported her daughter because she knew her sister went though the same thing then there was the fire and everything fell apart.

she took in sophie and supported her even when the council was trying to hurt her, she treated her like a kid something most adults in Sophie’s life seem incapable of doing. she was expected to support the council’s decisions but she didn’t, she was expected to not treat her sister in a bad match like family but she does (even if we don’t get to see it much) she doesn’t do the things she’s expected too and i love it.

they’re both rebels Juline’s rebellion is much more in your face and Edaline’s is quieter and something you wouldn’t expect because she’s a noble

Elven Wedding Headcanons Part 2

the last post was more about the technical parts of getting married, this post is more focused on the ceremony. disclaimer: i am a white christian who has only been to white christian weddings but this is how i imagine elven weddings would look.

the actual weddings?

they’re a LOT

brides don’t typically wear white

and grooms in black

they wear whatever colors they want (although most couples tend to stay away from green)

the biggest tradition is wearing the family circlets during the ceremony and reception

they’re passed down through the family

i guess it's not necessarily down

but through the family

it’s also equally common to have a wedding party versus not

most couples choose one person each to help them through everything

but they’re not always a part of the wedding then

some couples choose to have a large wedding party

it really depends on the couple

for example

grady and edaline didn’t have a wedding party but they chose kesler and juline to help them through the big day

but alden and della had a large wedding party

and neither is unheard of

elvin weddings are super duper uper sparkly

additionally if former councillors get married then the council is basically required to attend

honestly the ceremony can look however the couple wants

they just need an officiant and vows

otherwise it’s totally up to them

most couples do rings and they are usually VERY nice rings

but it’s not always the case

the reception is a whole thing though

it’s very common to change into another outfit for the reception

for guests and the newlyweds

there’s always dancing that goes on for hours

and food as well

wedding gifts are a huge thing

it's rude to show up without a gift

sometimes there are light shows

and sometimes there are other cool displays of wealth and power often utilising abilities

you know how over the top the midterm celebrations are? now just apply that level of intense celebration to a wedding

the elves do a lot

there’s always a big draw to the ceremony

the couple often chooses to wait and reveal what last name they’ve chosen until the reception

elven wedding ceremonies start in the morning and the reception might not end until three or four in the morning if not later

there’s always so many people

the couple usually goes to bed long before the party ends but that’s not uncommon

guests know that the bride and groom might leave before they do

and no it’s not to consummate the marriage

elves aren’t weird like that

it's just a long day and they're tired

elven newlyweds are typically granted one to two weeks off work

in order to take a honeymoon or to just relax and spend time with their new spouse

honeymoons are different in the lost cities

because you can go anywhere anytime

with a leaping crystal or teleporting

but elves don’t usually take time off from their jobs seeing as how they have infinite lifespans and infinite money

it fits in when it fits in

it does kind of raise the questions of “why would the elves go on vacation?”

and “where would they go?”

but that’s a whole other thing

anyways

the one-two weeks off are called the “post-marriage vacation”

it’s up to the couple to decide what to do with them

after which they return to their jobs and whatnot with their new last name

•Grady and Edaline sneaking into a masquerade party together, laughing and dancing and having the best time even though they’re not supposed to be there. Eda is worried they’ll get caught, but Grady reassured her that even if they do it won’t matter since the experience was amazing.

Elwin and Kesler were probably actually good friends - they might’ve seemed like they grew apart due to little to no interaction in the series - but I bet they binge the Star Wars movies every weekend together
