Series finale: The Staircase (created by Antonio Campos, 2022)
It's a smart series about a crime story and, increasingly so, about the making of the former. It started growing on me, probably as soon as Collette's character dies, again, on the titular staircase. The first time, happening at the end of episode 2, shocks, as it is horribly gruesome, upsetting, and fascinating. The finale brings everything to a climax, complicates it, and then meanders. Binoche, Posey, and Collette are standouts, amazing at communicating their convoluted relationship with the protagonist.

Sophie Turner has joined the cast of the HBO Max series "The Staircase"
Turner joins previously announced cast members Colin Firth, Toni Collette, Parker Posey, Juliette Binoche, and Rosemarie DeWitt.
The eight-episode series is based on the docuseries of the same name as well as various books and reports about the case of Michael Peterson (Firth), who was accused of murdering his wife, Kathleen (Collette), in 2001. He claimed she died after falling down the stairs at their home, but police suspected he bludgeoned her to death and staged the scene to look like an accident.
Turner will play Margaret Ratliff, one of Michael Peterson’s adopted daughters.
“The Staircase” was picked up to series at HBO Max in March. It is written and executive produced by showrunners Antonio Campos and Maggie Cohn. Campos will also direct six of the eight episodes. The series is a co-production between HBO Max and Annapurna Television.

further thoughts on my tv priorities watchlist
killing eve, derry girls, grace and frankie, lucifer: i do not feel ready for these to have ended so i have not watched their conclusions yet which means that in my world they have not in fact ended
prodigal son: see above but with premature cancellation angst added in so i just...really have not
hacks, the marvelous mrs. maisel, succession: new seasons i refuse to watch until i rewatch the full shows first so i can better enjoy the next installments
under the banner of heaven, the staircase: i’m not actually a huge fan of true crime but after [a decade in utah | seeing the same story on csi] i remain fascinated by [fundamentalist mormons | the idea of tragedy versus pattern] and let’s face it i was sold at [andrew garfield | colin firth AND toni collette AND parker posey AND juliette binoche AND rosemarie dewitt]
gentleman jack, stranger things, the crown: shows i used to love and don’t feel nearly as attached to now but i will watch the new seasons anyhow
hawkeye: determined to get through it for hailee steinfeld and florence pugh, but the pilot was such a slog i still haven’t tried
the great: liked what i saw when i watched with my best friend, but when i meant to carry on alone after that i got distracted and never went back
once and again: saw this decades ago and don’t remember it so i want to get to the end but it’s so slow, it feels endless. i’m only halfway through i think
xena: i am very familiar with this one, having loved one musical episode as a teenager and then lived with a huge fan of the show for 15 years--but despite multiple attempts i’ve never seen it all at once, all the way through
maid, minx, kenobi: literally watching for a single cast member and i think that’s very sexy of me
underground, the alienist: literally watching for two cast members which obviously is doubly sexy of me
zoey’s extraordinary playlist: i’ve seen musical numbers from this show and loved them but noped out of the pilot five minutes in. i’ll give it an actual chance this time
abbott elementary, better call saul, school of chocolate: tumblr talked me into these
mrs. america, the first lady: historical women with meh reviews but i don’t care because look at the casts
only murders in the building: leander told me to watch this so i will
criminal minds, sense8: leander loves these so i might too
home before dark, our flag means death: hello to things i love in show form
reservation dogs, what we do in the shadows, moon knight, the umbrella academy: there’s no one thing drawing me to these but they’re praised by critics and fans alike so i’ll give them a shot
#i can't update my shows page :( which i wanted to do before posting this#(i've got the code all ready but i am still waiting for javascript approval)#so i'm just putting these rambly tv things out there anyway#on the advisement of leander except it took me an extra day because then i spent last night researching internet stuff#television fanatic#2022 tvpg

In The Staircase Episode Eight,” America’s Sweetheart or: Time Over Time,” directed by co-creator Antonio Campos, Sophie Brunet (Juliette Binchoe), and Michael Peterson’s (Colin Firth) adult children let go of their fantasy of him. On February 24, 2017, Jean-Xavier Lestrade (Vincent Vermignon) conducts an interview with Michael that he promises to show Sophie sometime in the future. Afterward, the author officially pleads guilty in court via the Alford Plea. Candace Hunt Zamperini (Rosemarie DeWitt) reads a victim impact statement revealing that she still holds anger toward Michael. The only person there to support Michael outside of his defense lawyer David Rudolf (Michael Stuhlbarg), is his French editor girlfriend Sophie, who’s excited to start their new life in Paris. All the adult children check in with each other through text.
During Michael’s Alford Plea, His eldest son Clayton Peterson (Dane DeHaan) spends the day with his family. Next, Margaret Ratliff (Sophie Turner) works on the pre-production of her documentary, then flies in to watch the dance performance her little sister Martha Ratliff (Odessa Young) choreographed. Finally, Todd Peterson (Patrick Schwarzenegger) spends the evening with his mother, Patty Peterson (Trini Alvarado).
Meanwhile, Sophie packs up the Durham apartment while Michael watches himself on the television. They start fighting when the author says he doesn’t want to move to Paris. Sophie sees through Michael the minute he brings up needing to be there for his absent children. The French editor leaves the apartment forever when Michael reveals that he never loved her. Back in the hotel, Jean-Xavier plays his last interview with the author to Sophie. Sophie realizes she never knew Michael.
During the December 2011 pre-trial hearing, David successfully argues that Michael deserves a re-trial because the prosecution used misleading evidence to convict him. Michael’s big brother Bill Peterson (Tim Guinee), ex-wife Patty, Sophie, and all the adult children come to Durham to support him. The author is freed from prison until the new trial date. Unfortunately, the holes in the supposed “ideal” family come out during their celebratory night. Todd is now the family screw-up, and Michael relies on Clayton for anything he needs. During the dinner, the author feels overwhelmed eating in a Mexican restaurant for the first time in ten years. Michael emotionally withdraws from Martha after she brings up a queer character from one of his novels. He snaps at birthday girl Margaret, who picks a cheesecake for dessert in a Mexican restaurant.
On December 7, 2001, miserable Kathleen Peterson (Toni Collette) reaches out to her sister Candace for help though sadly, they don’t really “hear” each other. Michael emails Kathleen a peace offering, including tickets to a sold-out Christmas ball. Later, he comes home to a happy Kathleen dressing in a ball gown to loud cheerful music. The two of them make love on her dressing room table. During the ball, Michael and Kathleen drink, dance, and enjoy each other’s company all evening.
Hours before Kathleen’s death, Michael rents America’s Sweetheart, directed by Joe Roth from Blockbuster, then checks on her soaking in the bath. She laments that they can’t afford to travel to Aruba or Paris. Michael half-jokes that they can afford pasta and Blockbuster. About an hour later, Kathleen laughs joyfully as she and Michael watch the hokey romantic comedy. Todd checks in on them before heading out to a party with a friend. After the movie, Kathleen listens to some voicemails, including one from an employee named Helen. She needs to check a presentation before her trip to Toronto.
Kathleen calls Helen, then realizes she left her work laptop at the offices. She asks Helen to email the presentation to Michael. He comes into their kitchen. Kathleen tells Michael that she needs to check his email for the presentation. Michael talks her out of reviewing the presentation into the morning. The sequence appears to re-tell the murder until Kathleen and Michael lounge next to the pool. Kathleen talks to Michael about what is happening in their adult children’s lives in 2017, including how Caitlin has a baby. Kathleen emotionally tortures Michael in his fantasies. The Staircase Miniseries ends with Michael sitting up in bed alone in 2017.
SOPHIE’S RECKONING
Michael reveals part of his true self to Jean-Xavier and Sophie through a recorded video interview. The sequence starts with a crying Sophie walking to her car in a dark parking lot. Jean-Xavier’s recorded voice asks Michael why he wanted to talk to him. Michael’s voice-over says ‘baseball.’ Then a cut to a lit-up hotel hallway with Jean-Xavier’s voice repeating the word baseball. He tells Michael not to worry about the time. Finally, cut to Jean-Xavier and Sophie watching the interview on his laptop in a hotel room. Michael speaks about how as a young boy, he fantasized about a neighborhood girl and one of his little league teammates. These sexual dreams made Michael realize that he was attracted to both genders.
The future author knew he had to hide his bisexuality based on his father’s horrific reaction to his sexuality. First, Michael’s father caught him and his teammate experimenting. The author tears up on camera as he talks about his father’s violent response to his queerness. Then, Michael returns to the story about listening to classical music with his mother alone in his father’s car. Though now Michaels reveals he had a black eye when he first discovered the power of classical music. After that, the author knew it was safer to lie, perhaps explaining why he hides significant facets of his life from everybody who cares about him.
Jean-Xavier turns the volume up on his laptop. Sophie lounges on the couch with a guarded expression on her face. Recorded Jean-Xavier asks about what Michael has been holding back all this time. There is a close-up on Michael’s face as he blinks back tears. He never told Kathleen about his bisexuality. This revelation contradicts what Michael said during the filming of the documentary. Sophie shakes her head in frustration. Tears slide down Michael’s face when he explains that he could never fully reveal himself to Kathleen. Sophie’s face withers in pain when he talks about how lying seems okay if you get away with it. Recorded Jean-Xavier asks Michael if he killed Kathleen. The author denies murdering her.
When Jean-Xavier presses pause on the interview, Sophie turns away from the screen in disgust. The characters speak French for the rest of the scene. Finally, the editor sputters out that Michael lied about everything. Sophie looks puzzled as she slowly realizes that she doesn’t know Michael. Jean-Xavier tries to excuse the author’s behavior by saying maybe he is trying to stop deceiving everybody. Sophie stands up, moving away from the couch. She faces Jean-Xavier from across the table. Sophie breaths in and out, trying not to cry. The director explains that he doesn’t know how to react to the interview. Jean-Xavier stares into Sophie’s eyes when he says that she will be happier without Michael in her life.
Sophie cries as she tries to get her friend to say that her ex-boyfriend couldn’t have killed Kathleen. She couldn’t live with herself if she helped get a murderer out of prison. Jean-Xavier muffles back tears as he shakes his head. He can’t reassure Sophie because he doesn’t know the truth. So, they must sit with the fact that Michael may have murdered Kathleen.
LAST THOUGHTS
The Staircase miniseries ends with more questions than answers. Michael’s innocence or guilt regarding Kathleen’s murder remains a mystery. Everybody involved in the case has their own story, but we don’t know the truth. However, we know that Michael’s lies and manipulations isolate him from those who love him. Perhaps the best punishment is that the author lives alone in Durham, surrounded by questions about what happened to Kathleen on December 9, 2001. Let us know what you think of the miniseries in the comments below.

The cast of HBO Max’s crime drama The Staircase continues to grow, as Deadline reports that Juliette Binoche has joined the series and will star alongside Toni Collette, Colin Firth, Rosemarie DeWitt.
RELATED: Toni Collette Joins Colin Firth in HBO Max’s Crime Drama The Staircase
Based on Jean-Xavier de Lestrade’s true-crime docuseries and various books and reports on the case, the limited series explores the life of Michael Peterson, his sprawling North Carolina family, and the suspicious death of his wife, Kathleen Peterson. In 2001, Peterson was arrested for the murder of his second wife after he had claimed that she died after falling down the stairs at their home due to consuming alcohol and Valium. However, the autopsy report refutes Peterson’s claims because it concluded that she died from sustaining multiple injuries, including blows to the back of her head with a blunt object.
Binoche’s character is currently unknown, with Deadline reporting that it’s being kept under wraps for the time being. However, the star-studded cast continues to grow, and it looks as if HBO is hoping this will another in a long line of hit dramas that reach massive levels of success.

À noter également la participation de Rutger Hauer, qu’on avait pu voir dans “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” (2017).
A voir …

INTRODUCTION
In The Staircase Episode Six, “Red in Tooth and Claw,” directed by Leigh Janiak, Michael Peterson (Colin Firth) reckons with the fact that he will spend the rest of his life in prison. At the same time, Sophie Brunet (Juliette Binoche) investigates the wild theory that an owl killed Kathleen Peterson (Toni Collette). “Red in Tooth and Claw” begins in 2017 with Michael preparing to take an Alford Plea with his defense lawyer David Rudolf (Michael Stuhlbarg). Michael officially taking the Alford Plea will mean that he is admitting that the prosecutors have enough evidence to prove to a jury that he is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt of murdering Kathleen while maintaining his innocence. Therefore, he will be a free man. However, the episode ends with Michael unsure if taking the Alford Plea is the right thing to do because he will be admitting some form of guilt over Kathleen’s death.
In 2007, Michael and Sophie wait patiently to hear back about his second appeal. Michael works out, reads books, writes romantic letters to Sophie, and spends time with her during prison visits. Sophie ends her marriage to her absentee husband. She flies back in forth between Paris and Durham. Sophie shares custody of her son with her ex, rents a home in Durham, edits a narrative feature and visits Michael in prison. Michael lashes out at David when his defense lawyer shares that his second appeal failed. The former author becomes a broken-down man when he realizes that he will be spending the rest of his life in prison.
Michael’s former neighbor Larry Pollard (Joel McKinnon Miller), tells Sophie that he thinks an owl killed Kathleen. At first, the French editor thinks that Larry is bonkers, but he convinces her that his theory is credible. Next, they dig into Kathleen’s case files and footage from the docu-series to find proof of the owl’s involvement. Eventually, Sophie and Larry find two feathers to go with the theory that the bird’s talons caused all the injuries on Kathleen’s face. Finally, the editor argues her case in front of the pathologist Dr. Deborah Radisch (Susan Pourfar), who agrees to check her body for signs of an owl attack. First, however, the doctor needs Caitlin Atwater’s (Olivia DeJonge) permission to exhume Kathleen’s body.
During Thanksgiving 2001, Kathleen takes Michael and Caitlin to her sister Candace Hunt Zamperini’s (Rosemarie DeWitt) home for the holidays. Kathleen and Candace fight the entire visit leading to a tense Thanksgiving. Martha Ratliff (Odessa Young) figures out she is queer during her Thanksgiving in San Francisco. Margaret Ratliff (Sophie Turner) spends the holiday in Rhode Island with her biological mother Elizabeth Ratliff’s sister Margaret Blair (Deena Wade), a.k.a. Aunt Blair, and her brother-in-law Steven Blair (James Healy Jr). Margaret calls Martha to tell her some upsetting news that she learned from Aunt Blair, but her younger sister is so joyful over the phone that she can’t break the news.
FAMILY SECRETS
On Thanksgiving 2001, Margaret learns something that destroys the way she sees her family. Margaret and Aunt Blair sit at the dining room table looking over old family photographs while Uncle Steven watches football in the living room. The two women share some smiles while looking at photos of Elizabeth Ratliff and discussing her life. Aunt Blair shows Margaret a picture of her and Martha when they were very little. The sisters were hanging out at the beach with her and Uncle Steven. Aunt Blair tells her the photograph was taken when the sisters spent the whole summer in Rhode Island. Margaret questions why her father (Michael) would send her and Martha to spend three entire months with her aunt. Aunt Blair checks to make sure Uncle Steven is focused on his game, then blows up her niece’s world.
Aunt Blair explains that Michael’s ex-wife Patty Peterson (Trini Alvarado) couldn’t handle raising her sons and the Ratliff sisters. As a result, Patty handed custody of the girls over to her and Uncle Steven. Margaret is shocked since nobody told her anything about living with her aunt. Aunt Blair says that Michael took the girls back because he didn’t like that they were being raised religiously. The eldest Ratliff sister scoffs, resting her head in her hands. Four years later, Michael wanted to return Martha to Aunt Blair because of her behavioral issues. Aunt Blair tells Margaret that he wished to keep custody of her, essentially splitting the two sisters up. However, she refused to only take in Martha. Margaret can’t believe that her father wanted to split the two of them up. Tears well up in her eyes, realizing that Michael’s loving parent routine isn’t real.
Why did Margaret work so hard to help create Michael’s defense when she knows he is a liar? Perhaps the eldest Ratliff still feels loyal to her father because he ended up keeping the sisters together. On the other hand, maybe Margaret supported Michael to keep Martha from knowing the truth. She could also believe that Michael isn’t capable of murder even if he manipulates people.
LAST HOPE
Sophie hangs all her hope of living happily ever after with Michael in Paris onto the Owl Theory. She spends “Red in Tooth and Claw” researching case files and footage to find proof that an owl killed Kathleen. Sophie feels so excited when the pathologist agrees to examine Kathleen’s body for signs of an owl attack but instantly nervous when Dr. Radisch explains that she needs permission to exhume the body. The phone call with Caitlin to gain that permission goes as well as can be expected.
Caitlin is typing away on her laptop in the dark when her cellphone starts to buzz. She answers the flip phone. Sophie asks if it’s Caitlin Atwater, and the younger woman confirms her identity. The French editor introduces herself, then explains she thinks that the defense’s theory about how Kathleen died is incorrect. Sophie sits at her dining room table in Durham. The French editor’s half-put-together puzzle is sprawled on the table in front of her. Caitlin doesn’t understand what Sophie is trying to say. She doesn’t even know that the editor worked on The Staircase.
Sophie asks if they can meet up in person. She can’t get her thoughts out. Maybe she realizes that she shouldn’t be asking Caitlin to exhume her mother’s body. Caitlin asks Sophie to tell her everything over the phone because she is too busy to meet. The French editor explains she has a theory that could answer all the questions about what happened “that night.” Then there is a reenactment of the owl attack on the Peterson’s lawn and Kathleen dying alone on the staircase.
The French editor cries as she tells Caitlin they need to exhume Kathleen’s body to confirm the Owl Theory. Sophie asks for the daughter’s permission to find that evidence. Caitlin yells at Sophie about why she would ask her to dig up her mother’s grave. The editor begs Caitlin for a chance to prove Michael’s innocence. The daughter shouts that she sleeps well at night, knowing that Michael will die in prison. She angrily hangs up the phone. Sophie holds back tears as she hangs up her phone. She destroys the half-put-together puzzle, frustrated that her last hope of being with Michael is gone. Without the body, the pathologist can’t change Kathleen’s cause of the death because she can’t be sure that an owl killed Michael’s late wife. Sophie’s love will be trapped in prison forever.
