Below is my ranking of the eight episodes from the 2024 ITV/Epix limited series, "BELGRAVIA: THE NEXT CHAPTER", the sequel to Julian Fellowes' 2020 limited series, "BELGRAVIA". Created and written by Helen Edmundson, the series starred Benjamin Wainwright, Harriet Slater and Toby Regbo:

(1.07) "Episode 7" - When gossip surrounding Clara, Lady Trenchard and Dr. Stephen Ellerby reach Frederick, Lord Trenchard's ears, the married pair engage in a bitter quarrel. This leads Clara to leave her husband. Frederick's business manager, Mr. Ross, discovers unsavory details about his employer's business partner, the Marquise d'Etagnac.

2. (1.05) "Episode 5" - Clara's fascination with Stephen's social circle leads her to make a daring choice, alarming her maid Davison. Frederick's younger brother, the Reverend James Trenchard, faces personal turmoil. And Frederick seeks involvement in the Marquise's new endeavor.

3. (1.06) "Episode 6" - Clara's older sister, Emily Dunn, questions her about a controversial painting she had posed for, fearing a potential scandal for their families. Meanwhile, Frederick proceeds with his investment in the Marquise's silver mine, but Ross starts to doubt her motives.

4. (1.03) "Episode 3" - The Trenchards travel to Maywood for the Duke of Rochester's birthday. Also, Clara conspires to repair Frederick and James' estranged relationship with disastrous results.

5. (1.08) "Episode 8" - In the finale, Frederick grieves over his estrangement from Clara. His butler Josiah Enright receives a letter that pushes Frederick to confront his past. Meanwhile, Clara and Davison adapt to life in the North, while the former suffers from homesickness.

6. (1.01) "Episode 1" - After a passionate courtship, Frederick and Clara marry. However, family secrets from Frederick's past, threaten the couple's newfound happiness.

7. (1.04) "Episode 4" - Reeling from James' surprise visit, Frederick immerses himself in work at the foundry. Meanwhile, Clara finds solace in a new circle of friends, introduced by Dr. Ellerby. A lonely James seek solace at a local steambath.

8. (1.02) "Episode 2" - Following an argument between Frederick and Clara, the former attempts to renew their relationship by taking her to Glanville, the Trenchard family's country estate. There, Frederick reveals some of his childhood's trials. Meanwhile, the Dunns take in Nell, a suicidal woman, as their maid.

An increasing number of Silicon Valley investors and Wall Street analysts are starting to ring the alarm bells over the countless billions of dollars being invested in AI, an overconfidence they warn could result in a massive bubble. As the Washington Post reports, investment bankers are singing a dramatically different tune than last year, a period marked by tremendous hype surrounding AI, and are instead starting to become wary of Big Tech's ability to actually turn the tech into a profitable business. "Despite its expensive price tag, the technology is nowhere near where it needs to be in order to be useful," Goldman Sach's most senior stock analyst Jim Covello wrote in a report last month. "Overbuilding things the world doesn’t have use for, or is not ready for, typically ends badly."

According to Barclays analysts, investors are expected to pour $60 billion a year into developing AI models, enough to develop 12,000 products roughly the size of OpenAI's ChatGPT. But whether the world needs 12,000 ChatGPT chatbots remains dubious at best. "We do expect lots of new services... but probably not 12,000 of them," Barclays analysts wrote in a note, as quoted by the WaPo. "We sense that Wall Street is growing increasingly skeptical." For quite some time now, experts have voiced concerns over a growing AI bubble, comparing it to the dot-com crisis of the late 1990s. "Capital continues to pour into the AI sector with very little attention being paid to company fundamentals," tech stock analyst Richard Windsor wrote in a March research note, "in a sure sign that when the music stops there will not be many chairs available." "This is precisely what happened with the Internet in 1999, autonomous driving in 2017, and now generative AI in 2024," he added.

Disability Divest: We Demand the Disability Establishment End Its Relationships with War Profiteers (July 1, 2024)

Hi friends and comrades,

This Disability Pride Month, please read and sign onto this letter to the disability establishment to divest and end its partnership with war profiteers and complicity with genocide and colonialism.

Some of us are affiliated with organizations in the US disability advocacy space, and some of us are not.

Many disability organizations and their leaders have been silent about the mass disabling event and genocide that has been happening since last October. Silence is complicity.

Several US disability rights organizations, which advocate for equal rights and treatment for disabled Americans, accept funding and have fostered partnerships with major war profiteers and weapons manufacturers including Northrop Grumman, Booz Allen, Boeing, RTX/Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, General Motors, and Google.

Disability rights organizations go even further than accepting money from war profiteers: they honor them with disability inclusion awards.

One example is the 2023 Disability Equality Index, presented by Disability:IN, awarded HP, Siemens, Barclays, Chevron, Intel, and 11 weapons manufacturing companies with the top score 100 of “Best Places to Work.” (All 16 companies are corporate partners with Disability:IN.)

Disability:IN is certainly not the only one doing this in the US disability establishment, and we see similar patterns with other national orgs as well. They take money from these war mongers and turn around and pay lip service to the idea of liberation and disability rights.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO BEFORE THE SHOW

open your ticket in the eventim.pass app before the show so that it is already downloaded on your phone

you have to enter the stadium as a group and the person who bought the tickets needs to show their ID

GETTING THERE

public transport to the stadium seems to be a bit messy so plan enough time for it (info on how to get there (you have to take an s-bahn and then a shuttle bus) can be found on the page I linked above)

enter the stadium from the entrance for your seats (see map linked on the site)

VOLKSPARKSTADION

bags aren't allowed to be bigger than 29,7cm (height) and 21cm (width and depth), there's no wardrobe where you can store a bag that is bigger than that so you will not be allowed to enter the stadium if your bag doesn't fulfill the requirements!

costumes should not obstruct other people's views and posters should not be larger than DIN A3

powerbanks are permitted but only as long as they're not bigger than your phone

you are not allowed to take any foods & drinks and umbrellas wih you

Conseguia fazer mais brincadeiras espontâneas e contar histórias sem pensar muito em como iria falar e no que deveria deixar ou não de fora, o que fez a viagem de volta passar ainda mais rápido. Ela estava tentando ignorar o fato de que teria que voltar para sua rotina - não que fosse insuportável, mas o fim de semana na mansão Barclay tinha sido revigorante o suficiente para ela ter sentido falta assim que entraram no carro para retornar à Londres. De maneira otimista e com um sorriso discreto no rosto, pensou que teriam mais oportunidades de repetir aquilo. Só quando os prédios familiares da rua de sua casa começaram a aparecer que a ficha caiu de verdade. Ela se despediu de Ethan e agradeceu pelos dias, e prometeu vê-lo no dia seguinte.

Assim que bateu a porta de casa, estando dentro do seu apartamento ainda silencioso (Sabrina não estava, pois ela iria pegá-la na casa da cuidadora apenas no dia seguinte), ela parou para olhar seu celular (olhar de verdade, e não só ignorar o que estava alí). Com uma ligeira careta, verificou ligações perdidas e quaisquer mensagens. A maioria era de sua mãe, com frequentes "cadê você?", como se ela não fizesse ideia de onde estivesse a filha, quando Clara mesmo já tinha avisado e o sr. Barclay ainda ajudou a confirmar que estava tudo certo. Mesmo de longe, Brianna ainda tentava controlar os passos da filha, e a mais nova percebia ligeiros surtos quando não conseguia ou quando Clara fazia tratamento de silêncio. Ignorar sempre foi a maneira mais efetiva de ter paz, com exceção, é claro, da distância física ao ter se mudado. Ainda assim, pensou que a curiosidade deveria ter muito a ver com a casa de determinada família na qual tinha passado o fim de semana. Brianna poderia achar, mas Clara não era boba. Ela imaginou que iria tentar ao máximo deixar a relação com Ethan discreta até para sua própria família, para que episódios como o fatídico pedido de casamento de Christopher não se repetisse (nota da autora: mal sabia ela......). A garota digitou rapidamente um "em casa" e guardou novamente o telefone no fundo da bolsa. Como já era fim de dia, trataria apenas de organizar o mínimo para o resto da sua semana.

Desde que acordou (antes do despertador sequer tocar), Clara estava com uma energia que ela não identificou exatamente de onde vinha. O dia, segundo seu horário, estava repleto -- e ela não admitiria, mas a ligeira ansiedade não era exatamente por isso, mas sim por rever Ethan, conforme combinado, ao final do dia. Ao adentrar no campus e seguir em direção ao seu bloco de aulas, procurou Julie na multidão pois tinha uma ligeira dependência emocional na garota (brincadeira) e ao achá-la, passaram boa parte dos primeiros tempos juntas. Na última aula, de escrita criativa, Clara ficou sozinha e se demorou na sala um pouco além do tempo organizando algumas ideias. "Clara, não vá se perder por muito tempo aí, tá bem?" recomendou seu professor pouco antes de ele mesmo recolher suas coisas e sair, deixando ela sozinha por alguns minutos. Ela não tinha percebido, e quando olhou seu relógio de pulso, no qual já indicava ser 17h30, deu um pulo. Estava atrasada.

Louis Tomlinson Gives Rockstar Performance At Forest Hills Stadium

Fans at Forest Hills Stadium couldn’t help themselves when they got the opportunity to get up close and personal with singer and heartthrob Louis Tomlinson on Saturday, July 29. Andrew Cushin and Giant Rooks opened for Tomlinson with dynamic performances that set the tone for the rest of the evening.

The former One Direction star created quite the stir when he took the stage in Queens for the last stop on the current leg of his ‘Faith In The Future World Tour.’ Tomlinson made a grand entrance rocking a black tank top and stunner shades after the rain came drizzling down right before he was about to go on. Luckily, the weather cleared up just in time and the English songwriter proceeded to sing hits from his latest solo album that dropped back on November 11 last year.

Performing ���High in California,” “She is a Beauty We Are World Class,” and “Out of My System,” Tomlinson had his passionate fan base holler and shriek throughout his entire set. Tomlinson’s magnetic energy made the atmosphere so sweltering that he had to pause in the middle of “All This Time” to help a fan who needed assistance in the crowd.

Staying true to his roots by not forgetting where he came from, Tomlinson also performed 1D megahits “Night Changes” and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go.” He also paid homage to English rock band Arctic Monkeys by singing the moody “505.” (The Arctic Monkeys will also roll through the area on September 8 and 9 for a highly anticipated tour of their own.)

Stacked Sandwich Shop (68-60 Austin St, Queens, NY 11375) made sure to keep the hungry stadium crowd properly nourished throughout the evening with delicious, jumbo-size Philly Cheesesteaks that had to be seen to be believed. Owner Danny Azzo was on hand with new menu items to feed into the excitement that Louis created.

“We recently introduced Mozzarella Sticks and Fries. It’s a hit,” Azzo said in an interview with the Queens Gazette. “We don’t do that in the shop because we traditionally make sandwiches, but that’s been really good for us, as is the cheesesteak. Our usual popular items include the Turkey Sandwiches.”

Before the night wrapped up, fans who were lucky enough to be near the barricade got the rare opportunity to touch their charismatic idol during the song “Silver Tongues.” Always a gentleman, Tomlinson happily greeted his supporters with a wide smile. Attendees in the front row lost control and proceeded to tear away at Tomlinson’s tank top in a frenzied scene that was reminiscent of the peak of Beatlemania during the 1960s.

Tomlinson proudly soaked up the moment like only a true rockstar could, and performed the rest of his concert shirtless. Unsurprisingly, fans in Queens were quite content with that particular parting visual. The “Bigger Than Me” singer will pick up his tour again on August 29 when he goes overseas to play at Barclays Arena in Hamburg, Germany. Tickets are on sale now for those who want to take an adventurous, fly away holiday.

After a year-long campaign against its premises by Palestine Action and local community groups, Barclays PLC has sold all of its shareholdings in Elbit Systems Ltd (ELST). Until recently, Barclays owned over 16,000 shares in Elbit Systems, Israel’s largest weapons company.

Starting just over one year ago, Palestine Action’s campaign saw activists undertake 54 actions against Barclays premises nation-wide. Smashing branch windows, spraying them in blood-red paint, many of these actions put Barclays sites out of operation for weeks, actions which sought to raise the costs associated with dealing with Elbit.

In the latest U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings, Barclays owned 0 shares in Elbit Systems Ltd (ELST) [1], down 16,345 since the previous filing, 15th May 2024, worth over $3,400,000 [2].

Until then, recent filings had showed Barclays’ Elbit shareholdings at record high quantities [3], having steadily increased from zero ten years ago. The most recent SEC filings and NASDAQ data record an immediate total sale of Barclays’ ELST shares [4], abruptly sold just when Palestine Action’s campaign hit them hardest.

Initial research published in July 2022 by Campaign Against Arms Trade, War on Want and Palestine Solidarity Campaign showed the bank held shareholdings worth over £1.5billion in companies complicit with Israeli apartheid [5]. Palestine Action adopted the campaign in October 2023 due to the bank’s investments in Elbit Systems — the group’s primary target. 

Palestine Action’s 11-month long campaign against Barclays reached its peak on 10th June 2024, when 20 branches had their windows smashed, drenched in red paint, in a co-ordinated nationwide overnight action with Shut the System[6]. Four days after, Barclays CEO CS Venkatakrishnan penned in the Guardian that the bank is concerned about “overall suffering” in the region, and is very accepting of the type of “peaceful protest” seen in multiple years of campaigning up until this year [7]. But, in a media campaign co-ordinated with former Defence Secretary Grant Shapps, Venkatakrishnan complained of Palestine Action’s disruptive actions against the bank [8]. 

Inadvertently, Barclays CEO affirmed Palestine Action’s strategy, which is to make the cost of dealing in genocide, occupation, and apartheid exceed the potential to profit from it. Throughout this year-long campaign, several activists were arrested. During questioning, police claimed that many actions caused damage between £250k to £500k in value. Most actions forced bank branches to close for weeks at a time, contributing to the financial disruption to the bank.

These actions were taken as part of Palestine Action’s four-year campaign against the premises of Elbit Systems, and against the financial and industrial partners which support them. Elbit Systems is a major supplier of the Israeli military, its contributions including the vast majorities of Israel’s drones [9], along with mortary munition and artillery rockets [10] currently being used in Gaza.

Weakened real already impacts prices as Trump effect looms

U.S. tariffs may deepen currency depreciation in 2025 but Brazil might mitigate impact if China responds favorably, economists say

The depreciation of the Brazilian real against the U.S. dollar is becoming more apparent in consumer prices, particularly for industrial goods. This trend could intensify in the coming months, as the real continues to depreciate, especially in the next year, with tariff policies promised by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump against China and other nations. Economists suggest Brazil has “buffers” to navigate this more uncertain and inflationary external environment, depending on China’s response and the domestic fiscal scenario.

Prices of exchange rate-sensitive industrial goods in Brazil’s benchmark inflation index IPCA, such as electronics and furniture, have risen 1.2% in the 12 months leading up to October, according to estimates by AZ Quest based on an exercise by Itaú Unibanco. This is the highest value since February 2023, when they rose 1.6%. On an annualized and seasonally adjusted quarterly moving average, these goods increased by 3.3%.

Since July, inflation for exchange rate-sensitive goods was around 2.5% annually, according to João Fernandes, an economist at Quantitas. In October, this figure jumped to 4%, the highest of the year, he notes. “Goods remained at very low levels throughout the year, with price drops at the beginning of 2024. Now, the dynamic has changed as the exchange rate effect takes hold.”

Roberto Secemski, chief economist for Brazil at Barclays, notes that the recent depreciation of the real “seems to be already affecting wholesale prices” and, as a result, certain prices not only of industrial goods but also of tradeable goods in the IPCA.
