Mother’s Day
Tumblr media
Motherhood is a job that’s frequently exasperating and ever-changing. Moms do not get days off, do get generous pensions, nor do they take handsome salaries. Instead, the rewards they receive come in the forms of necklaces made from elbow macaroni, sticky kisses, and the pleasure of seeing their kids grow up to become healthy and happy adults and that is probably not an adequate compensation so then give your Mom a special gift or an extra hug this special Mother’s Day.
MOTHER'S DAY HISTORY
Tumblr media
The celebrations go back into the ancient times when the Romans and the Greeks held festivity just in honor of those mother goddesses Cybele and Rhea. However, the untimely Christian festival called as “Mothering Sunday remains as the current precursor. This European custom fell on the 4th Sunday in Lent. Lots of people believed the faithful will come back on this moment to the “mother church”— the key church nears the house for that special service. This Mothering Sunday tradition changes over time into the more secular holiday wherein the kids would give flowers to their mothers and some other kind of gifts. This tradition would blend in the American Day for Mother’s in year 1930s and 1940s.
The American poet and author Julia Ward Howe, wrote “The Battle Hymn of Republic,” turned to be the editor of the Woman’s Journal, this magazine is widely-read suffragist in 1872. During this time, she wrote the “Appeal to womanhood all throughout the world,” that would be called as the Proclamation of Mother’s Day. The document asked the women to battle for world peace next both to Franco-Prussian War and Civil War. Howe then launched the failed attempt to begin the “Mother’s Day” commemoration on June 2. After two decades, Howe suggested the celebration of Mother’s Day every July 4. It failed to start also, but set a stage for the future attempt.
Then Anna Jarvis successfully set off Mother’s Day right after her mother known as Ann Reeves Jarvis, passed away in 1905. Jarvis take note that Mother’s Day must have the “solo possessive,” so every family may honor their own mother — as a resist to every mother. Jarvis, who neither had children nor married, organized the first ever official celebration of Mother’s Day in May 1908. The Philadelphia department store landlord known as John Wanamaker lent the financial support to this cause. That similar month thousands of individuals attended the Mother’s Day event in one of the Wanamaker’s stores.
Jarvis then soon lobbied to create the Mother’s Day be included in the national holiday — recommending the prominent Americans to unite the effort. Then in 1912 many churches, states, and towns have adopted the Mother’s Day as a yearly event. Jarvis started also the International Association for Mother’s Day. President Wilson soon established the 2nd Sunday of May as the Mother’s Day celebration in 1914 and Hallmark start selling the Mother’s Day cards during the early 1920.
Jarvis’ love affair in this holiday that she worked really hard to begin did not last, that she finally grew to resent the commercial appeal. As greeting cards and florist companies start to cash in, Jarvis soured on the thought of the national day — urging the people to stop on buying cards, candies and flowers. Jarvis use most of her wealth hiring attorneys in filing lawsuits against those groups using the word “Mother’s Day.” She tried to convince the federal administration to take it out from the calendar.
TIMELINE OF MOTHER'S DAY
1868 - Started with a Peacemaker – Toward fostering companionship between mothers during those times of Civil War, Ms. Ann Jarvis starts the day of ‘Mother’s Friendship’ moment.
1908 - Continue the Legacy – The daughter of Ann, Anna Reeves Jarvis established the day of observation to give honor to her mother.
1914 - Making this day Official – Next with the founding of the 2nd Sunday of May as the day for Mother’s by Anna Jarvis, the President Woodrow Wilson passed the law to make this day be included in the national holiday.
2018 - Mom Dearest – About $23 billion had been spent on dinners and gifts on Mother’s Day.
GLOBAL TRADITION AND HISTORY
Tumblr media
In most countries, the Mother's Day is the observance taken from the celebration as it has progress in the US, promoted by companies like "Mr. Wife LTD" someone that saw benefit when it became famous. As adopted by some cultures and countries, the holiday has diverse meaning it is associated with the different events like legendary, religious, or historical and is being celebrated on diverse dates also.
In some cases, states already had existing festive honoring motherhood, and the celebrations then adopted some of the external characteristics from US holidays like the giving of carnations and some others are presents to their mothers.
The extent of these celebrations differs greatly. In some states, it is potentially unpleasant to one's mother to not mark Mother's Day. While in some others, it is that little-known festive celebrated mainly by the immigrants, or being covered by media as the taste of foreign cultures.
Religion
In some habitual branches of Christianity, this holiday is strongly link with revering with the Virgin Mary. While in some Catholic, Anglican and Lutheran homes, families have the exclusive shrine on their house altar devoted with the Virgin Mary, the Blessed Mom. In lots of Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches, an exclusive prayer service is being held to give honor to Theotokos Virgin Mary.
While in Islam, there’s no concept about Mother's Day, but Quran teaches their kids should give concern to love their mothers over their father.
And in Hindu tradition, the Mother's Day is being known as "Mother Pilgrimage Fortnight" or "Mata Tirtha Aunshi" and is being celebrated in states with the Hindu population, particularly in Nepal, where the mothers are being honored with a special food. The holiday is then observed during new moon day during the Baisakh month like April or May. This celebration had been based on the religion of Hindu and the pre-dates are the creation of that US-inspired celebration through at least some centuries.

Remembering the "The King of Cool", this week will be 39 years since his death. Here are some lesser known facts about the star to go with my colourised version of a rare candid picture taken in 1960 by Larry Barbier
Terence Steven McQueen died on November 7th, 1980, after surgery to remove tumors in his neck and abdomen, he was 50 years old. Nicknamed "The King of Cool", his antihero persona was developed at the height of the counterculture of the 1960s, and made him a top box-office draw during that decade, and the 1970s. McQueen received an Academy Award nomination for his role in The Sand Pebbles. His other popular films include The Cincinnati Kid, Love With the Proper Stranger, The Thomas Crown Affair, Bullitt, The Getaway, and Papillon, as well as the all-star ensemble films The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, and The Towering Inferno. In 1974, he became the highest-paid movie star in the world, although he did not act in films again for four years. McQueen was combative with directors and producers, but his popularity placed him in high demand and enabled him to command large salaries.
Some lesser known facts about "The King of Cool"
His father, William McQueen, was a stunt pilot for a barnstorming flying circus who left McQueen's mother, Julia Ann six months after meeting her.
Dyslexic and partially deaf due to a childhood ear infection, McQueen did not adjust to life with his stepfather who beat him to such an extent that at the age of nine, he left home to live on the streets. Soon he was running with a street gang and committing acts of petty crime.
At age 16, McQueen volunteered to serve on a ship bound for the Dominican Republic. Once there he abandoned his new post, eventually being employed in a brothel; afterwards, McQueen made his way to Texas, and worked as a roughneck, a carnival barker and a lumberjack.
In 1947, McQueen joined the United States Marine Corps where he was promoted to private first class, he focused his energies on self-improvement and embraced the Marines' discipline. McQueen served until 1950, when he was honorably discharged.
McQueen competed in weekend motorcycle races at Long Island City Raceway and purchased the first of many motorcycles.
McQueen played the top-billed lead role in 1963's The Great Escape, the notable motorcycle leap was done by his friend and fellow cycle enthusiast Bud Ekins, who resembled McQueen from a distance.
1968's Bullitt, one of his best-known films featured an unprecedented (and endlessly imitated) auto chase through San Francisco. Although McQueen did do the driving that appeared in closeup, this was about 10% of what is seen in the film's car chase. The rest of the driving by McQueen's character was done by stunt drivers Bud Ekins and Loren Janes.
After 1974's The Towering Inferno became a tremendous box-office success, McQueen all but disappeared from the public eye, to focus on motorcycle racing and traveling around the country in a motor home and on his vintage Indian motorcycles. He did not return to acting until 1978.
McQueen was offered the lead male role in Breakfast at Tiffany's, but was unable to accept due to his contract.
McQueen expressed interest in the Rambo character in First Blood when David Morrell's novel appeared in 1972, but the producers rejected him because of his age.
Director Steven Spielberg said McQueen was his first choice for the character of Roy Neary in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. McQueen told Spielberg that he could not accept the role because he was unable to cry on cue
McQueen designed a motorsports bucket seat, for which a patent was issued in 1971
McQueen flew and owned, among other aircraft, a 1945 Stearman, a 1946 Piper J-3 Cub, and an award-winning 1931 Pitcairn PA-8 bip, flown in the US Mail Service by famed World War I flying ace Eddie Rickenbacker.
Jay Sebring had invited McQueen to the party at Sharon Tate's house on the night when Tate and four others were murdered by members of the Manson Family. According to McQueen, he invited a girlfriend to come along but she instead suggested an intimate night at home.
McQueen had an unusual reputation for demanding free items in bulk from studios when agreeing to do a film, such as electric razors, jeans, and other items. It was later discovered McQueen donated these things to the Boys Republic reformatory school, where he spent time in his teen years.
McQueen developed pleural mesothelioma, a cancer associated with asbestos exposure for which there is no known cure, he thought that his illness was a direct result of massive exposure while removing asbestos lagging (insulation) from pipes aboard a troop ship while he was in the Marines
McQueen remains a popular star, and his estate limits the licensing of his image to avoid the commercial saturation experienced by other dead celebrities. As of 2007, McQueen's estate remains one of the highest-earning dead celebrities.

The #MeToo men are getting their comeback tours. The women they hurt won't be.
Tumblr media
Just months after they were publicly exposed, the men of #MeToo would like to announce that they've served their sentences on their time out stools, and are ready to return to the playground.
The list is long. Garrison Keiller, accused of "dozens of offenses" over a period "of years," plans to bring back two of his radio shows, and public access to his past shows have been reopened. (Oh, and he's on tour.) Meanwhile, Matt Lauer, who not only harassed women but also allegedly assaulted at least one of them, has reportedly left his Hamptons mansion-cell and is ready to rejoin society — he's been seen lunching in Manhattan. Mario Batali is supposedly "eyeing his second act" after reportedly abusing multiple women over the years, whether by harassing or physically groping them.
These men who've done lasting damage are already being embraced by audiences unwilling to hold them accountable in the first place. Left out of the narratives are the women they hurt, many of whom lost their careers or left their industries as a result of the abuse. Those women don't have the luxury of "returning" to public life. And they won't be getting a fawning Hollywood Reporter profile anytime soon.
SEE ALSO: Men in Hollywood launch campaign to support sexual assault survivors
It's infuriating, and hard to ignore as a spate of "redemption stories" hit the papers. Louis Faranda, executive talent producer for Caroline's comedy club, told The Hollywood Reporter that Louis C.K. would likely return to the comedy scene within a year, "making fun of his mistakes." Eileen Koch, founder of public relations company Eileen Koch and Company, doesn't think C.K. needs to wait that long, according to the article—as long as he gives a sincere apology. Meanwhile, Batali's restaurants continue to draw impressive crowds and his fans still stop him on the street to ask for selfies.
other things we've recently learned: charlie rose is v lonely without female staffers to harass (also "brilliant") and people have Helpful Advice for louis ck to "joke" about jerking off onstage again https://t.co/zrkOl0mFHY
— Talia Lavin (@chick_in_kiev) April 17, 2018
Glenn Thrush, the New York Times reporter accused of going after young women and spreading misinformation about them when they didn't return his advances, was punished for his alleged misdeeds by ... getting a different dream job at the Times. The poor man is now relegated to covering the federal housing beat. Imagine.
Let's not even look at the audiences lining up for  Bill Cosby's latest comedy splash.
What we do need to do is look for the women who were hurt by these men, whether directly or indirectly. Most of the time, they've left the public stage altogether. While Matt Lauer was busy collecting his $20 million a year salary — even as he reportedly harassed women and sent one to the hospital — his female coworkers were forced out of their jobs. Lauer was reportedly responsible for helping to oust Ann Curry, his female cohost on Today, after she served for 10 years on the show. Both Tamron Hall and Natalie Morales lost their jobs during Lauer's uninterrupted, unearned reign.
"Curry felt that the boys’ club atmosphere behind the scenes at Today undermined her from the start, and she told friends that her final months were a form of professional torture," CNN's Brian Stelter wrote for the New York Times Magazine. "The growing indifference of Matt Lauer, her co-host, had hurt the most."
None of these women are back on air, and they're certainly not getting effusive write-ups.
They're not alone. Dana Min Goodman and Julia Wolov, who both accused Louis CK of sexual misconduct, said speaking up about the comedian forever damaged their professional reputations. Gretchen Carlson claimed she was fired for refusing Roger Ailes' sexual advances. She hasn't been on the air in two years.
Actress Tara Subkoff, one of Harvey Weinstein's many victims, said it was "impossible for me to get work as an actress after this."
Weinstein, meanwhile, just sold his New York City townhouse for a cool $20 million, no bigs.
There's debate to be had about when at least some of these men can return to public life, if at all. But we should be far more concerned with how readily forgiveness has been granted to them — and how sparingly it's proffered to women convicted of far lesser crimes.
Hillary Clinton has still never been forgiven for her email server mismanagement, while Donald Trump secured the presidency after mocking the disabled, calling for a Muslim ban, and allegedly assaulting or harassing upwards of 20 women. She'll never live down her "deplorables" comment, never be forgiven for failing to visit Wisconsin, and is still being forced to reckon with her "unlikeable personality." She's not even running for anything!
It took like twenty years for people in showbiz to forgive Winona Ryder for having shoplifted that one time https://t.co/zMUsSV1aVA

And, as a political comparison, how are Sean Spicer, Reince Priebus, and Corey Lewandowski, a trio of men a trio of men who ceded their integrity for the chance to eat steak at the White House, doing, you ask? Mighty fine, thank you! All three of them have enjoyed their newfound glory as Visiting Fellows at Harvard's prestigious Kennedy School.

Sean Spicer also had a special guest appearance at least year's Emmy's.
Tumblr media
If there's anything the past two years have taught us, it's that forgiveness is a gift offered far too readily to America's most privileged. Charlie Rose will be just fine, playing tennis and hiding out eating buttermilk chicken in his mansion. Louis CK can get another job. I'm confident some children's birthday party company, somewhere, would be glad to have Sean Spicer on board as their official Easter Bunny.
Too bad we're not lifting up the women who did nothing wrong in the first place.
