snow miser in general is so funny to me. like we’re first introduced to him by santa casually being like “yeah he and his brother might kill jingle and jangle” like he deals with this every week ?? then snow miser’s laughing hysterically over his brother trying to kill jingle and jangle, so we assume he’s some terrifying elemental demigod, but then when we finally get to meet him in full mrs claus intoduces him as “the big ham” and he sings us a funky little show tune, and then calls mrs c “sugar plum” and “my little icicle”, then calls his brother “hot dog”, “hot head”, and many more nicknames. and don’t even get me started on 2008 snow miser because that’s a whole separate post.
#can you tell I’m fucking fixating#anyway I just love him#a year without a santa claus#a miser brothers christmas#snow miser#dick shawn#juan chioran#christmas#rankin bass

Cartoons of the Great White North: Grossology
This installment of CotGWN was requested by @fluffyglass
Grossology is a Canadian animated series produced by Nelvana Limited. It aired from 2006 to 2009.
General Plot: The show stars brother-and-sister duo Ty and Abby Archer, who are agents of the Bureau of Grossology, a superspy agency dedicated to dealing with all things gross. Every episode, a gross crime occurs and Ty and Abby, along with their lab worker friend Lab Rat, rush to solve it.
When described like that, the show seems formulaic and dull. However, they go above and beyond with delivering unique and interesting plots that you wouldn’t find in any other show. How many cartoons have episodes that involve the main character being immune to a mind-controlling nanobot epidemic because of their excessive earwax?
Characters: The main characters are Ty, Abby, Lab Rat, and the Director, who make up the Bureau of Grossology. The show also has a crapton of villains, but the main ones are Insectiva, Sloppy Joe, and Lance Boil.
Ty and Abby are really fun characters. They bounce off each other well, and do great individually as well. Lab Rat is a smart character, and he’s really funny. The Director, however, is a pompous fool who is in, like, the wrong-est position ever. He’s terrified of anything even remotely gross, and I hate every second he’s on screen.
Insectiva is an interesting villain. She’s amazingly wild, and fun to watch in action. Sloppy Joe is pretty funny, and I like how he can occasionally be a genuinely good guy. Lance Boil is wonderfully evil, and it’s great to see what scheme he’ll cook up next.
As for the other characters? Paige’s entire personality is “b*tch”, Naomi’s entire personality is “love interest”, Andy is basically every stereotypical nerd in every cartoon ever...Roger was a really interesting antagonist, but he didn’t really have enough time to be a fantastic villain. I could go on, but we don’t have all day.
Animation: The animation is pretty par for the course for mid-2000s flash animation (wait, was this show Flash or ToonBoom?). The animation tends to be stilted and jumpy. with occasional bursts of fluidity. What really makes this show’s animation stick out is the style. There are lots of jagged edges and bizarre body shapes, which really helps with the “gross” aspect of the show and makes it unique.
Voice Acting: Krystal Meadows as Abby, Michael Cohen as Ty, and M. Christian Heywood as Lab Rat all do great jobs with their roles and make them likable. Melissa Altro fits perfectly as the alpha b*tch Paige. The villains especially are fantastic; Lili Francks as Insectiva, Juan Chioran as Lance Boil, and Lyon Smith as Pinkeye in particular really bring their characters to life and make them memorable.
Overall Verdict: Grossology is a pretty great show. Well-written with a great cast and unique style. It’s a shame that it’s so underrated.
General Plot: 9/10
Characters: 8/10
Animation: 6/10
Voice Acting: 8/10
Final Score: 31/40 (Great)

So here's Juan Chioran, a classically-trained opera performer singing as an evil cartoon pimple-man about destroying Christmas. Beyblade fans, you'll know him best as the original voice of Doji. Grossology was a fun time. Our Christmas episode "Let Them Eat Fruitcake" was especially fun.

I am not a fan of the musical in general, and I especially dislike the 1972 film version of "Cabaret", so it was with great reluctance that I went to see this particular staging at the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake this past weekend.
Reader, I am impressed.
I'm hard pressed to think of the last time that I was so moved by a piece of stagecraft. As presented here, the show was dark in the extreme, nuanced, and filled with fine, subtle performances. In short, it's everything the film is not.
Deborah Hay as Sally Bowles could teach the cloying Liza Minelli a thing or two -- as she plays Sally we can see what a great big loser the character is. A deeply sad loser, but a loser nonetheless, just as she was in Christopher Isherwood's original novel. Juan Chioran is just creepy as the emcee, made more creepy by the fact that he has a fabulous singing voice. Indeed, there wasn't anyone in the show I could point to who gave a less-than-good performance.
Someone told me that the difference is all in the staging. Could be. This is based on Sam Mendes' version from a few years back, and all of the sentimentality has been cut out, including some especially icky songs, and the pace is brisk. Whatever the reason, it works.
I'm not going to run out an see "South Pacific" or anything. But I won't be as generally dismissive of musicals any more. This old dog can still learn a thing or two

I'm really confused right now. Whenever I hear Wurst's voice, I can't help but compare it to the Director in Grossology. But, the voice actor Paul O'Sullivan died in 2012, so it's not him. I just wish I could figure this out.
Its Juan Chioran. He was the voice of Brackus in Di-Gata Defenders and he's a regular at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario.
