After (2019)

If After were worse, it would be a “better” movie. This Twilight knockoff is nowhere as awful as they get, which means it never quite reaches the level of being "so bad it's good". It's a near miss considering the weirdly chaste romance and the loopy scenarios threatening to keep its lovers apart.

On her first day of University, Tessa (Josephine Langford) meets Hardin (Hero Fiennes-Tiffin). They couldn’t be more diametrically opposed but she's drawn to the tattooed, moody bad boy. She has a boyfriend, Noah (Dylan Arnold). Her mother insists she’ll be throwing her life away if she pursues this new hottie instead of him. Everything tells her they don't belong together but will she listen?

You’ll know something’s amiss from the opening credits. “Wattpad Productions”? As in the website where you post fan fiction? Yes. This film is based on a novel that began as a One Direction fan fiction. Not that there’s anything wrong with fan fiction - you enjoy what you like the way you want to - but there’s a certain… quality associated with someone so inspired by their love of a boy band they need to pen a book.

The worst thing about this movie is how derivative of other works it is and how predictable this makes the plot. When the overly rebellious-looking Molly (Inanna Sarkis) invites Tessa to join in a game of truth-or-dare and she asks “What is the wildest place you’ve had sex?” you know Tessa will reveal she’s a virgin. How could she not be when she’s currently dating Noah? The guy shows her so little affection I wouldn’t blame you for thinking they're siblings. In my headcannon, he's secretly an old man whose mind has been transplanted into a highschooler's body. I don’t know where the series is headed but I’m pretty sure he’s like a Ken doll - just smooth down there. Same applies for Tessa’s new college bestie, Landon (Shane Paul McGhie). His only purpose is to emphasize how much of a “bad boy” Hardin is by comparison.

Speaking of which, I’m not going to judge Hero Fiennes Tiffin too much on his performance as the love interest -the script is just awful - but he’s not very good in it. Every time you spot him brooding on his rooftop you’re supposed to think “he’s so tortured inside… I hope she can fix him”. Instead, you’ll mutter “Give me a break”. He’s a teenager’s idea of what a bad boy is like, which means he’s got tattoos and a shady past… but he doesn’t drink and loves to read classical litterature. Oh, and he “doesn’t believe” in love. This nonsense might fly with teenage girls but the rest of us will see right through it.

If you're lucky, you'll find After comically but unintentionally amusing. At one point, Tessa’s mom (played by Selma Blair) comes at her daughter. “You’ll ruin your life if you get with him. I knew I shouldn’t have allowed you to stay in this room that reeks of pot!” Tessa refuses to give up the relationship with Hardin “Then, you’re cut off!” her mother screams. Now with no money to pay for rent or food, she’s forced to move in with her scandalous boyfriend. Good job, mom! That’s the second big dramatic moment (the first was when Tessa had to break up with Noah). The final one comes later in the movie when wait for it we learn Hardin began dating Tessa… on a dare. Wow! Bet you didn’t see that coming. What’s more surprising is how few times we see the characters at school or how surprisingly modern the sex scenes are. At least I can give the movie credit for that second one.

The best thing about After is that its sequel is so out there (in terms of romantic dramas) that it becomes a fascinating wreck. To properly enjoy just how ridiculous it is, you need to see this introductory chapter. As far as backhanded compliments go, this is as low as it gets, but After is the kind of movie that will eagerly accept it. (March 18, 2021)

After months of waiting, After Everything, the fifth and last film in the After series, is currently showing in US theatres and will shortly be on Prime Video in the UK. Hardin (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) sets out to find Tessa (Josephine Langford) and win her back in Lisbon, Portugal; in this last movie, He also encounters his former flame Natalie (Mimi Keene) and deals with his book publisher. It's a fantastic moment to binge-watch the other After films as the show finishes—can you believe it's over? There are how many films? In what sequence should you see them? Fanfiction typically finds its way from the internet to books to movies, much as 50 Shades of Grey, inspired by Twilight or The Love Hypothesis, which emerged from Star Wars. These romances can be exciting, given their visual material and minor editing. See this blog for the After Movies In Order of release date and where they fit in the chronology to go further into the After series and grasp what happened when. What are the After Movies In Order? Based on the series of After novels penned by Anna Todd, the After films are a set of films. Starting on Wattpad's social storytelling platform in 2013, Todd started penning the stories that would eventually become After, somewhat inspired by Harry Styles. Todd created three After volumes on Wattpad after uploading a fresh chapter of After every day for almost a year. Then, in 2014, the show was transformed into a new series. Released in 2019, the first After film chronicles the relationship between Tessa Young (Josephine Langford) and Hardin Scott (Hero Finnes Tiffin), who start their romance during Tessa's first year at university. Later films looked at the ups and downs of their relationship. After Movies In Order and by Release Date The After Film series consists of five films; the first, After Movies, was released in April 2019, and the fifth and last, After Everything, was released in September 2023. After (2019) The first After movie came out on April 12, 2019, and was also the narrative's starting point. Susan McMartin, Tamara Chestna, Tom Betterton, and Jenny Gauge wrote the script for this edition; Jenny Gauge also oversaw the project. Here, we meet our protagonist, Tessa, Josephine Langford, a young woman headed off to college in Washington (a standard setting following the popularity of Twilight). She meets Hardin (Hero Fiennes Tiffin), a friend of her flatmate and a typical lousy boy; the couple starts their turbulent relationship once she gets there. Though they are both from England and have tattoos, Hardin himself doesn't resemble Harry Styles personally. That's about how far the links run. After We Collided (2020) October 23, 2020, saw the release of the second film in the series and the second to be produced following our crash. Here, we keep tracking the dramatic highs and lows of Tessa and Hardin's relationship as the two work through the momentous revelation afterfirst the film's conclusion. Working with Mario Celaya, Anna Todd, and Roger Kumble (Cruel Intentions), the script contains contributions this time from the filmmaker. The franchise begins to veer towards its roots here, with advantages and drawbacks. On the one hand, it's fantastic entertainment; everything is hammed up to 1000, whether your viewing is for the romance or to chuckle. On the other side, you must be somewhat tolerant of repetition since the whole story revolves around Tessa and Hardin's happiness for a day; his anger results in their fighting, their time apart, and their reconciliation. After We Fell (2021) After We Fell, set for October 22, 2021, comes next. Sharon Soboil writes this screenplay; director Castille Landon also arrives on location. This picks up exactly where After We Collided left off ends, and Tessa's father re-enters her life. He is homeless and invited to stay with them for a bit. Tessa is also moving to Seattle in response to a job offer, which distances the pair literally and symbolically. Much of the action focuses on Hardin finally realizing how badly he abuses Tessa and working to control his rage problems. Hardin's handling of Tessa is one of the primary causes of the series' controversy. In an interview with Refinery29, author Todd says, "I'm not creating novels to be a good example… That is simply the narrative I am recounting. At last, as is customary at this time, the film closes with a startling revelation of Hardin's family. After Ever Happy (2022) September 7, 2022, saw the release of the penultimate series part, After Ever Happy. With Sharon Soboil and Castille Landon returning, this represents the first time a director and screenwriter returned for a second round. Starting from the major reveal in After We Fell, we witness the fall-out and inevitable breakups that result. About which, Hero Fiennes Tiffin tells Entertainment Weekly, Tessa moves to New York City, and Hardin ultimately gets sober and visits Alcoholics Anonymous. Hero Fiennes Tiffin says this leads Tessa to "get closer to being that best version of herself." As they always do, when they get back together, they find that some of their differences have faded, and they begin to reconnect. Tessa sadly finds something startling that causes her to call off their relationship entirely. After Everything (2023) After Everything marks the end of the entire series with a September 13, 2023, publication date, Castille Landon keeps her directorial run but also wrote the screenplay this time; strangely, this is the first film in the series not derived from one of the original books. Hardin is here resolved to get Tessa back, but she is as determined to go on from him. Hardin contacts his first love, Nathalie, to atone and attempt to get better personally. Although it's an odd decision to stray from the source material for the conclusion, the producers know their target audience and the films have always catered to fans, whether keeping things the same or altering them. PS: One of the reviews mention that the film misses its target demographic. Do you think it misses its mark? Or are there still environments that High Schoolers still aren’t able to speak up when there is harassment? Or maybe even had no idea some things are actually harassment?

To chyba nieodparte połączenie u młodego chłopca, który jest również konwencjonalnie przystojny. Rzuć dziewczynę z sąsiedztwa z podręcznikiem dobre zachowanie i ambicję, aby jej matka była dumna. Kiedy ci dwaj spotykają się w filmie, publiczność wie, czego się spodziewać. Idealnie, że zabierze element niespodzianka, ale to pisanie tych znaków, które prowadzą do inwestowania.

Tiffin jest w najlepszej formie, przedstawiając nieprzewidywalność Hardina w mierzonych tonach. Łatwo jest mu zakorzenić się, nawet jeśli nie robi tego, co należy. With each Twilight knockoff I see, I have to give the original more credit. At least Stephenie Meyer conjured exciting things like vampires and genuine danger. After is a notch below the 50 Shades movies.

On her first day of University, Tessa (Josephine Langford) meets Hardin (Hero Fiennes-Tiffin). They couldn’t be more diametrically opposed but she's drawn to the tattooed, moody bad boy. She has a boyfriend, Noah (Dylan Arnold). Her mother insists she’ll be throwing her life away if she pursues this new hottie. Everything seems to indicate the two of them getting together would be wrong… but is it?

I’m not going to say a good story can’t begin as a Wattpad fan-fiction about One Direction members Harry Styles and Zayn Malik… but this film does nothing to prove otherwise. From the beginning, you know you’re in for a laugh when you see Tessa’s boyfriend. Don’t spot him right away? That’s because you’ve seen more suited lover material in a glass of milk. He’s a goody-goody so bland you think he’s Tessa’s brother until she says otherwise. If he returns in the upcoming sequel, he’s got even less of a chance than Jacob did in Breaking Dawn Part 2.

The next fantasy we meet is Hardin. He's trying so hard to be a bad boy you'll chuckle. The man delivers every line as if one wrong word will cause the world to end. At night, he broods by the window or gazes longingly at the moon. You've got him figured out in an instant, meaning you know exactly what Tessa is like too. Everything is so over-the-top and manufactured.

So much of After is blatantly obvious and obviously wrong. The school the characters attend is not a real school, it’s just an excuse to bring these people together. The friends Tessa meets are clearly there to fill time with their own side love plots, to deliver exposition on what makes Hardin so dangerous or to be brought up again in the sequel as romantic rivals or alternate lovers for Tessa. It feels like a young-adult romance mad lib, but one filled out by a teenage girl who refused to give silly words and instead opted to be as serious as possible. Upon hearing that her daughter has broken up with her milk toast high school boyfriend and moved in with Hardin (who comes complete with tragic backstory), mom cuts off her daughter’s funds. It seems awfully harsh but how else are we supposed to understand how much the world doesn’t want our couple to be together?

All you need to know about After is the tagline on the poster. ‘After’ your first, life is never the same. If you groan, this movie isn’t for you. If your heart swoons, you’ve probably already read all five books in this romantic saga. If you chuckle, get some friends together and spring this one upon them. It's so bad you can easily have a good time. (November 8, 2019)
