I got to get this off my chest about that After series.

I see so many people ( I believe mostly preteen girls who never had any real life relationship experiences, way to go, Todd) defend Hardin and Tessa with ' It's a realistic relationship with ups and downs!'

Keep in mind, this is what Todd has portrayed as cute, romantic and totally normal / forgivable:

Violently beating people up, breaking things and screaming when you feel slightly jealous

Burning down homes

Coercing a girl to make a sex tape with you and somehow not suspecting at all that your douche friends would put it on the internet ( Yes, Hardin was to blame for that, what did he think was going to happen?) and THEN saying ' I'm sorry' with absolutely NO sign of genuine remorse about it

Stalking your ex

Writing and publishing an entire book about you and your partner without your partner's consent, AFTER she finds out about it and leaves you because of it

Also... and this may be a nit pick, but I think it shows how manipulative and controlling Hardin is...every time he says, ' I did this for " US" ' or something along those lines, he's clearly not saying it because he cares about her. He's only saying it as a way to keep himself in her business and her life. He never sees her as an individual person and never seems to care about her life outside of him. She only matters if he attaches himself to her.

....In fact, it seemed like every time she WAS trying to live her life without him, he'd get angry at her about it and call her ' selfish'. Gaslighting her much?

And before you say, ' But she never meant to actually romanticize it!', then why on this green earth did the last movie end with them married with kids and living supposedly ' Happily Ever After?'

THAT'S LITERALLY ROMANTICIZING.

If you want 'realistic', then expect this couple ( Yes, Tessa too, because although she's not nearly as bad as Hardin, she's problematic, too ) To fight and throw things in front of their kids and be absolutely crap parents.

That was 98% of their relationship before they got married, why would being married suddenly magically change that?

And it pains me to see so many young girls respond to Hardin like he's the ultimate perfect dream man, because he's AWFUL.

Confession: the first two after movies aren't that bad. As long as you don't think of it as romance but more so smutty drama. Like ridiculous, dumb drama. But still slightly entertaining to watch drama.

Kinda like how Vc Andrews books are like entertaining drama. But more dark. But to be fair in the books I heard there's some fun dark drama with Tessa's mom and dad I wish they added that more in the movies. Plus I have a soft spot for Trevor. Trevor is my baby boy. Love him

Plus I love the Tessa and Molly fight in the second movie. It's so funny lol 🤣. The other movies, yeah. Can't watch them.

I suffered through 100 chapters of After - the Harry Styles fanfiction that was published and made into 5 films by Anna Todd - so you don’t have to.

This week on The Confession Club we discuss the Wattpad fanfiction ‘After’ and unpack why Tessa and Hardin’s relationship is so toxic. We discuss why we hate Hardin and don’t like Tessa, the romanticisation of toxic relationships and the effect this has on real life relationships.

The problem with this book and the sequels is that there is no acknowledgement that the relationship between Hardin and Tessa is toxic and Hardin is emotionally and psychologically abusing Tessa. As a result this series, which is marketed at 13-16yr old girls finish the book with the idea that this relationship is romantic and something to aspire to - it’s not. This leads to girls getting into toxic relationships which is unhealthy and dangerous. We discuss this on this weeks episode of The Confession Club and much more.
