OPERA DE NUIT - “KAREN LLOYD”

You know, I’ve always been highly sympathetic to the whole Goth thing. I seem to have attracted a lot of friends who are into it, over the years. I guess sometimes it’s more about commitment to a particular aesthetic and sensibility, as its own virtue, moreso than it is about belonging to the same specific subculture. When it comes to fashion, I wear a more monochromatic and architectural version of the New Wave and New Romantic styles, full of semi-ironic formalwear and vintage statement pieces. On the weekends I go for a watered down industrial, rivethead sort of thing. I like to look unapproachably tomboyish in some heavy boots, sunglasses, and an esoteric band t-shirt.

As for music, well, you probably already know a bit about that if you’re here. I love gloomy, melancholy music, but the fact that I more or less need a major electronic instrument in a song to get into it has rendered most of the historical pantheon of “trad” Goth music off limits to my ears. I was happy to find the darling Opera de Nuit recently, who have combined meandering, mopey Goth sentiment with a strong synth line. (And they’re serving a look, too.) 

I suppose they could be considered a “post-punk” sounding band, but it’s hard for me to say stuff like that when I remember post-punk meaning something very different. We used to just call all the music that came around slightly after punk, in the late 70s and early 80s, “post-punk.” Y’know, because it’s literally...after punk. Nowadays it seems to just mean, “anything that sounds like Joy Division.” But I guess language changes, right? Even if the proliferation of terms like “sophisti-pop” to unite and distinguish past musical styles that weren’t grouped together in their time, let alone by such names, rubs me the wrong way sometimes. Even Steve Strange didn’t want to be called a “New Romantic.”
