#NationalDaughterDay was yesterday and it was difficult to see so many beautiful daughters-some which were born on or around when my Akari transitioned. I debated sharing this post bc angel babies are rarely talked about once the "time" has passed. However, I want to acknowledge my daughter- she was with me an eternity within 27 wks. I never knew her outside the womb but she taught me so much. How to love... how to heal. How to grow. I am forever grateful. On this day 9/26/2018, the night before my birthday, I found out that my life will forever change. I found out I was pregnant. Although, just several months later you would return to God. Black Maternal Health Week Part 1/2 - I remember during my pregnancy & post partum, one of my prayers was that I didn’t want to be a statistics (see below). I had to diligently do my part in taking care of myself & speaking up for myself & baby even when it wasn’t comfortable. . . Do you know what statistics I’m talking about? According to the @cdcgov the maternity mortality rate in the United States is 17.4 deaths per 100,000 live births. But by race, the rate for black women is 37.1 deaths per 100,000 live births compared to 14.7 for white women & 11.8 for Hispanic women. In fact for a black college educated woman, the death rate is 5 times worse than that of white women. (Let that sink in). . . Everyone who hears these stats should be alarmed & advocate for equal care regardless of socioeconomic status or class. The health disparities we see in the black community is unacceptable & most of these deaths are preventable. While we know that there are multiple & systemic factors causing the disaprities, there’s a lot we can do to bridge the gap starting with us being more assertive when communicating & advocating for ourselves, loved ones, patients, neighbors, mothers, sisters to receive the best care possible. Black people, women, mothers and most especially black mothers deserve better. . . It’s been a while

It’s definitely been a while I even shared anything!!

A lot has definitely happened in my life 6 years of attempting to get pregnant with no success. Close friends around me have had their kids. Meanwhile I have an empty nest with empty hopes and dreams.... [2 IUI] [2 IVF] [1 Miscarriage] I don’t know what more to expect. This has been very draining money wise but more than anything EMOTIONALLY. I will keep coming back to write to really let go of everything I have been holding back. It’s been a really journey for me....

Today is January 16th 2017. Almost a year since my husband and I decided we wanted to start a family. At that time, we began to wonder what the future had in store for us- planning trips earlier in the year in case I became pregnant, and thinking of names of our future son/daughter (all Game of Thrones themed, obviously). Little did we know just what was in store for us in the year to come. From smiling and side glances with the hubby when asked “when’s the baby coming”, to trying to fight back tears months later when asked the same question.

After months with no results and other issues I won’t get into here, I decided to check in with my doctor. Eventually, it was recommended my husband and I see a fertility specialist so we could start getting some answers. 

So here we are. Several procedures, LOTS of blood work (I’ve counted 5 times so far this month, I lost count on the times before), and frequent visits to the Medical Arts building later- I’m here to share my story. What they don’t tell you about having a baby- how sometimes, it’s not as easy as one may think.

What they don’t tell you- that the journey takes a toll physically and emotionally- that you will quickly learn how strong you are- how strong of a relationship you and your husband share (hopefully everyone is as lucky as I am to have a patient, positive husband who calms me every day)- how grateful you are for your calming husband- and modern medicine- how there are a lot of people who share in your story- and most importantly, attitude is everything. The process feels long quickly- the only thing you can do is stay hopeful, and take it one step at a time.

And that’s what my husband and I will continue to do- take this one step at a time and hope to one day write about our Game of Thrones baby.
