Hellooooo, I saw the reaction of seventeen to black widowš„ŗ, I could ask you for a second part of that reaction, what would they do when accompanying you on the set, would they talk with the rest of the cast, would they record you or I don't knowš
ooo yall love supportive Seventeen!~ I don't blame y'all. Sorry this took awhile.
Sure I'll do my best <3 In case yall didn't see the black widow one: x
-> S. Coups:
Seungcheol would blend in to the producers of the movie where he watched. He would NOT want to bring any kind of attention to himself because this was your moment. He wanted to watch you in your element and would be staring at you with such love and pride. He would hug you in between scenes and constantly compliment how you executed scenes. He was the bestest and most perfect partner to bring to filming days.
-> Jeonghan:
Jeonghan would come to filming days as a surprise. He'd have your favorite bouquet of flowers and would order a food truck to come. He wouldn't talk much to the cast because he is a bit more shy but anyone would just know how proud of you he was. He would be smiling at you every time you were acting or just standing on the set. He was so proud of you. <3
-> Joshua:
Oh so boyfriend. That's Jisoo. He would be smiling at you from the background as you slayed every line and would be shocked by the dialogue even if he already knew the script because he helped you with lines shortly before you started to film. He was friendly with the rest of the crew and other actors but he was there for you. Everyone knew that. He was so proud of you.
-> Jun:
Jun would be like a fly on the wall when you were being filmed. He would be monitoring you the whole time and his face would be very similar to how he was while watching the Spell MV. Once certain scenes were finished though he would be all smiles and would tell you how amazing you were. He was your biggest fan and everyone with half a brain cell knew it.
-> Hoshi: (Ok so this is going to be very niche but y'all know im a swiftie/carat atp lmfao just hang with me for a second.)
Y'all know how Travis Kelce looks at Taylor Swift when she's performing or anything like that? Well, that would be Soonyoung with you. He would be staring at you with so much pride and would just have such a soft smile on his face. He would observe everything and would constantly swoon when you would come over to him in between scenes. He was your biggest fan and you along with everyone else knew it.
-> Wonwoo:
I feel like Wonwoo would be fangirling because he was on a Marvel set. Sure he was proud of you but he would just be so into the sets and the plot. If you were to be like "you like Marvel more than me," he would just scoff and say "you are literally Black Widow, I love you the mostest," or he would tease you by saying "depends on the day." Either response would cause your to roll your eyes and kiss his cheek. Overall, I feel like he would be such a supportive partner on set. He'd make sure you were hydrated. If you were sleepy he'd offer his shoulder during breaks. Just so perfect.
-> Woozi:
Even though Jihoon is more comfortable in his own home or studio, he would be at the set whenever he could be. He wanted to show you support just like you did for him. He'd be in the shadows but you would know when he was there. He would be smiling and taking pictures of you. He was just so proud of you doing what you loved and oh my god seeing you in your element was just so precious to him. He enjoyed when he could come to set.
-> DK:
On days Seokmin came to visit you on set, you would feel like a superstar. He would be so soft because this was your moment and not his. He would be watching you kick ass and just would feel so emotional seeing his baby be in her element. During takes, he would constantly compliment you and he would help you with lines if you asked. He was there for you. So many of the crew just found him so precious and would think you both were goals.
-> Mingyu:
Oh this beefcake of a MAN would have his phone out and take so many behind the scenes photos and videos of you acting. Mingyu often would tell you how proud of you he was but he showed every time he came on set. He also became basically part of the crew family. He knew all the directors and so many of the crew staff by name. When he came on set, everyone was so in love with him and his charms but his heart eyes were always directed at you, his precious lil actress.
-> Minghao:
Minghao is one of the members that goes to other members solo or group shoots to show support so naturally he would be at your shoots as well. He would be similar to Jihoon and be in the shadows but during breaks he would be near you and complimenting you. His whole attention would be on you and he just had so much pride toward you.
-> Seungkwan:
Seungkwan would treat your filming days like they were the most fun things ever. He was your personal cheerleader and your happy little pill. No matter the scene, he had such a proud smile on his face and would constantly tell you that you were doing such an amazing job. He would always have an extra iced americano on hand. Some of your coworkers would tease and call him your "assistant" instead of your boyfriend which he'd just joke back and say "isn't that the same thing basically?" lmfaoooo.
-> Vernon:
oh boy Hansol would be cheesing the whole time. When I said he would be there every step of the way I mean it. He would be basically besties with set designers and on first name basis with the director. If people had no idea who Hansol, they would assume he was working on set because that's how often he was there.
-> Dino:
Chan would be your biggest hype man ever. When you got done acting a scene he would have a bottle of water ready for you and would massage your shoulders and shit. He would constantly compliment you and would just feel so much pride. He'd also text his members things like "this movie is going to be the best." He was just so so so proud of you.

List of Official/Official-Adjacent Pacific Rim Media
Here's a list of Pacific Rim media for y'all Pacific Rim fans who want to check out as much of it as possible!
PACIFIC RIM (2013 FILM) Usually considered the primary text of this franchise. Pacific Rim fans mostly agree it's good.
PACIFIC RIM NOVELIZATION BY ALEX IRVINE The novelization of the 2013 film. The book's writer, Alex Irvine, had texts from Legendary Pictures work with, but some of the information was outdated. Furthermore, the book has a cynical, smug tone and comes off like it's written for the type of audience who thinks CinemaSins is actual media criticism. The only thing it's really good for is for scraping out lore, but it's full of contradictions and occasionally uses outdated lore, so you have to compare/contrast it with other materials.
TALES FROM YEAR ZERO Authored by Travis Beacham, this comic explores the origins of the PPDC and the Jaeger program. It's interesting for lore, but story-wise, it might not be engaging if you aren't into Travis Beacham's particular romantic storytelling tastes. Also, if you're a puritan who gets offended when main characters are kinda fucked up people, this isn't for you.
TALES FROM THE DRIFT Authored by Travis Beacham, this comic tells the haters-to-lovers story of Duc and Kaori Jessop, pilots of Tacit Ronin. Mildly interesting for lore, and another romance-oriented story. (Beacham loves those.)
PACIFIC RIM: MAN, MACHINES, & MONSTERS The official artbook. Has some interesting information and lore, though it also contains a few typos and references outdated worldbuilding.
TRAVIS BEACHAM'S TUMBLR After Pacific Rim's release, Travis Beacham answered many fans' questions. While he was often cryptic and straight-up refused to answer certain questions for fear that he'd spoil a future story, he still provided quite a bit of insight. You can visit his old blog at travisbeacham.tumblr.com
PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING Largely panned by fans of the original film. Partway through production, the sequel to Pacific Rim was handed off to another director, and many plot elements were hastily changed with little to no regard for the rich worldbuilding developed by Travis Beacham and Guillermo del Toro, or even story coherency. The film never gives really your brain space to breathe, so it's very difficult to follow the story. Moreover, it misses the thematic and allegorical tones of the first movie, and lacks its occult influences. Overall, it's a hollow followup to Pacific Rim.
PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING NOVELIZATION BY ALEX IRVINE Fundamentally, it's the same story as Pacific Rim: Uprising. The upside is that Alex Irvine's writing is significantly improved, and the story is much easier to follow in novel format. The downside is that you don't have John Boyega's acting talent.
PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING JUNIOR NOVELIZATION BY BECKY MATHESON It's more or less the same as above, but edited down for a younger audience.
THE ART AND MAKING OF PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING The PRU artbook. I've never read this one, so I couldn't tell you what's in it aside from the very obvious.
PACIFIC RIM: AFTERMATH A prequel comic to Pacific Rim: Uprising written by Cavan Scott, Aftermath tells two stories: one focuses on Jake Pentecost and his relationship with his father; the other on what happened to Hannibal Chau and Joshua Griffin (one of Vulcan Specter's pilots) after the kaiju war. The comic makes excellent use of the lore, and the stories are great.
PACIFIC RIM: AMARA A prequel comic that focuses specifically on Amara Namari. I have mixed feelings about it; the mini-Jaeger designs were great but I felt that the actual storyline was a little melodramatic. I dunno, read it for yourself and see what you think.
PACIFIC RIM: ASCENSION A prequel novel to Uprising by Greg Keyes, this story gives life and focus to many characters who didn't get a lot of attention, including the Kaidonovskys and the cadets. Mako Mori is given the narrative respect she deserves, and Hermann Gottlieb's characterization is top-notch. The author makes use of the lore provided by Legendary Pictures to weave a rich and fascinating narrative that puts the actual Uprising film to shame.
MAKING OF/BEHIND THE SCENES VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE There's a number of videos out there on YouTube, which you can find by searching up.
PACIFIC RIM CONCEPT ART There's quite a lot of concept art out there. You can start here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, or search Pinterest or whatever search engine for Pacific Rim concept art.
PACIFIC RIM: THE BLACK A cash grab produced by Netflix, The Black disregards Pacific Rim's rich worldbuilding and follows bland, generic cartoon protagonists through a bland, generic cartoon plot loosely - loosely, mind you - based on the films. It tries to be dark, but it has all the skill of a sixteen year old edgelord about it. Also, the production values are nonexistent. You will miss absolutely nothing worthwhile by skipping over it. If for some reason you really want a Pacific Rim story where child soldiers are framed as a good thing, just read Pacific Rim: Ascension. If you want dark, watch Pulp Fiction or From Dusk 'Til Dawn. If you want a story where somebody makes a religion out of turning people into monsters, watch Midnight Mass or play/watch a no-commentary playthrough of Resident Evil 4 or 8. If you want an AI that looks after two stranded children, watch 3Below. Seriously, there is nothing The Black does that something else doesn't do infinitely better. "But most of these aren't Pacific Rim stories-" Wrong. Any story can be a Pacific Rim story if you're not a coward. And just about anything is a better Pacific Rim story than The Black.
PACIFIC RIM: BLACKOUT Prequel comic to Pacific Rim: The Black. Haven't read it, but it's written by the same guy who wrote Aftermath so it's probably a sight better than The Black.

Newish Comics:
Action Comics #1072: I am enjoying following the path of both of these stories, but I'm getting the vibes that I need some things to start happening soon, rather than stacking up more mystery boxes.
Still delighted by Kenan and Kon's antics though. The decision to team them up continues to pay off.
Detective Comics #1090: look, have we seen the premise of Thomas helping characters he probably shouldn't have, as a doctor, and that leading to disaster down the track before? Yes. Am I going to enjoy the parallels again anyway? Also yes. Get Leslie into this plot, Tom Taylor, for some support for Thomas' tendencies.
Nightwing #119: My first thought here is how nice it is to see a run that's picking up smoothly from the last one and where the writer is fully indoctrinated on Dick/Babs flirting from the Dixon days. It's got potential and so far I don't mind the characterisation.
Absolute Wonder Woman #1: I think this is probably going to end up my favourite title from the Absolute line. The art was beautiful and full of character, and I really loved the characterisation of Circe in this, and how she moves from indifferent to a mother. "How you fall in love with a child is by raising it." gaaaaaaah I had those words still ringing in my head last night as I was supervising bathtime and teeth brushing.
Green Arrow #17: and we finally get this book handed off from Joshua Williamson. First half was more tidying up of the Absolute Power mess (without much real resolution, but we all need to move on from that plot), but the new run with Chris Condon looks like it has some promise. I'm happy to go with it for the second.
The Flash #14: Skartaris time! I still need to actually get to the point where I understand what the current timeline of Skartaris is from Flashpoint onwards, because my personal understanding is that Travis should be DEAD DEAD DEAD but yet he's still around. I suspect this is because nobody at DC actually cares about Warlord lore enough to make this a problem, aside from Mike Grell, who at this point is in 'sure, that art proposal sounds fun to draw' life stages.
Anyway, the concept of the Wests all going to Skartaris for some family bonding time is hysterical (by both definitions) and I eagerly await to see how Spurrier handles adapting it for an audience who isn't already used to Skartaris oddities. The fact we have floating Ancient Atlantean buildings in the art is a very promising sign to me, though.
Zatanna: Bring Down The House #5: This was a good conclusion to the story. It's been very much Black Label levels of existing in its own continuity, and I respect how it was put together. I do wonder how much of Tamaki's insistence on how she characterised and centred rabbits in the run is influenced by and in opposition to that classic picture of Giovanni Zatara from The Books of Magic #3 with the dead rabbit.
Batman: The Brave and the Bold #18:
I really liked the art in Doubt. It was quite effective.
The Constantine and Streaky team up remained completely unnecessary but oh well, not written for me.
Reflections was an interesting team up! I wouldn't have put M'gann and Jackson together (actually I just realised this was probably influenced by YJA, carry on), but they do both have interesting placement in their narratives of Xebel v Atlantis and White v Green Martian. Wish the story had leant a bit more into that outsider narrative from the villain to try and convince them.
Why do we have a random Harley Quinn story from nowhere in the continuity? anyway.
Robin Season is uh not particularly good Tim and Damian characterisation (in that the one-upmanship competition doesn't really feel how the two of them compete?) but it's full of interesting background detailing for indications of setting.
The Warlord #73: This week for our second trip to Lost World of Skartaris, we're starting out strong as Travis is still trapped in the bondage tree from last week.
Terrible bondage peril! Over a fire!
Only to be further attacked by flying dinosaurs of some description!
Thanks for the art, Dan Jurgens.
We spend 6 pages of this comic with Travis trying to escape from the tree vines clinging to him, while also fighting the dinosaurs. We have never been more back.
In terms of the plot that doesn't involve tying Travis up in perilous situations, we're still tracking down the plague unicorn. The unicorn dies in a swamp, the gang figure out that Scarheart, our non-Skataran speaking friend from another dimension probably drank magical healing water from a pool which is why he doesn't have Unicorn Plague, and they go off to get some to heal everyone who's sick. Shakira gets better and falls immediately for Scarheart. They decide to hang out with the group of travellers who speak to animals and leave the main story group for a bit.
Also Travis uses up all his bullets, yet again. I must assume he just has a supplier in Skartaris by now who's worked out how to make ammunition.

i was tagged by @ambernotember for a writers wrapped, a little different to the normal year of writing that i just posted!
favourite story you worked on in 2024: my favourite, other than the one i mentioned in my previous post, would have to be it's nice to have a friend; this was my first fic on a rarepair that i've been thinking about for a long time, and it was so exciting to create something people had never really thought about.
favourite character that you wrote in 2024: i really really loved creating an omc, phoenix, from my tommy begins fic. he was just such a fun one to build, and he has a very elaborate backstory that's never explained inside the fic... just. sm fun
favourite scene you worked on in 2024: hands down it would have to be the eddie diaz/travis montgomery scene in chapter 14 of heartbreak to the third degree!
favourite piece of inspo you used in 2024 (i.e. song, movie, etc): pretty much any song on my tevan breakup playlist was used as fuel for my fics, but the big one would be wildfire by joshua bassett.
favourite line or lines you've written: these from my eddie mcd series
He just wants his dad back. For Prom. Graduation. To move him into his college dorm and pretend he isnāt crying when Christopherās not looking; to give him advice that he wonāt take, but he should; to wrap his arms around his son when some girl breaks his heart, really breaks his heart and makes him want to cry like a child again. To be super annoying at his college graduation and take ten billion pictures of him with his diploma in terrible lighting, and to sit in the front row of his wedding and get a little too drunk at the reception. And the little moments, too; watchingĀ telenovelasĀ and making dinner and facetiming their family back in Texas and visiting his motherās grave on sunny weekends. Hell, Christopher would take five more minutes with his father if it meant another world-class screaming match, where Eddie brings up Shannon and Chris brings up Kim and Josh tries and fails to mediate it all, because it would be his dad. It would still be his dad, with the mustache that looked like something from a porn website and an ill-fitting grey t-shirt that heās been wearing as a pajama top since Christopher started school. He would take that. He would take anything if it meant his dad was here.
writing piece or accomplishment you're proud of: in 2024, i completed a month-long challenge within the 31 days for the first time!!! completing whumptober was so satisfying and defo smt i'm proud of.

2000 Followers Celebration!!!
& Fallout Alphabet Poll End Results!
Hey all, so the secret is out! (Kinda) But all these past polls have been the prelude to my 2K Followers Celebration BONANZA. (That's not the official title, I just wanted to use the word BONANZA).
Anyway, a HUGE, MASSIVE thank you to every single one of you folks who are a part of this little community and who've supported me and my fanfiction writing journey for the past few years (which is crazy that it's been that long, omg.) But I love and appreciate you all SO MUCH and am absolutely baffled that I've made it to this. I thought 100 was crazy, then I thought 1K was crazy and then it just kept on going! Ahh, I'm just so so so glad that there's a thriving Fallout community out here of amazing writers, artists, and fans that are still so involved š
I don't know what I would do without this space, so thank you all for being a part of it <3
ANYWAY (x2) Here are the final results to all 22 polls that I posted, with more event details just below!
So I've posted the 1st place winners, 2nd place, and then a 3rd "runner up" position that will only be filled by non-companion npcs, just to give them a chance to shine, and me a chance to write for some folks I'm not as used to. For the purposes of the 2k event, I will only be using the 1st place winners for the 'prompts' (which I'll explain in another post), and then a few of the 2nd placers and (almost) all of the runner ups will be used in ANOTHER upcoming event that I'm going to start prepping for (because I'm an insane person).

Okay here is the final list of all the books Iāve finished this year! (since it doesnāt look like Iām going to get anything finished or even started this week.)
I tend to not finish things if Iām not enjoying them (two exceptions on this list because sometimes I am spiteful), so I liked all of theseābut the ones in bold are those I particularly loved (I only bolded one per series or it would just be a wall of The Murderbot Diaries lol).
LGBT+ books read: 48
wlw books read: 22
trans/nb books: 17
Iām very happy with my year in reading. I hit my new yearās goal of 52 books finished. And I read a lot of things that I really fucking loved. Lots of robots. LOTS of scifi/fantasy sapphics which I am SO happy about. Some good horror, some good fucky āromancesā. A lot of things written in response to the Trump era or written during 2020 lockdown.
I also enjoyed partaking in online book fandom for the first time in possibly ever! Especially Murderbot fandom, which is very active and creative and lovely.
(If you followed me for my bookblogging, thank you for enduring my Thai BL vroom vroom omegaverse brainrot. It will not be stopping anytime soon.)
For 2024, I am going to keep my goal at 52 books and save any extra time I have for rereading old things.

In conversation with Frank Iero of L.S. Dunes
BYĀ EM MOOREĀ INTERVIEWSĀ 9 HOURS AGO
June 30th, 2023
In 2022Ā L.S. Dunes, made up of Frank Iero, Travis Stever, Anthony Green, Tim Payne, and Tucker Rule, introduced themselves to the world on their outstanding debut albumĀ Past Lives. Recently, the band headed into the desert to record a couple of new tracks at the legendary Rancho De La Luna studio in Joshua Tree, California. Filmmakers Nick and Pat Demarais joined them in the studio to document the recording process and their documentaryĀ Limitless SkyĀ will be released in several parts on YouTube in the coming weeks. The first song from this session, āBenadryl Subredditā was released last week along with a music video that answers the question, āWhat if Anthony Green was an ice cream man?ā. L.S. Dunes will be putting out their 7-inch featuring "Benadryl Subreddit" and "Old Wounds" on September 1 via Fantasy Records and will beĀ touring North AmericaĀ starting in July, including dates on theĀ Sad SummerĀ touring festival.
Punknews editor Em Moore caught up with guitarist Frank Iero over Zoom to talk about recording new songs, getting out of your comfort zone, the importance of creativity, the magic of monster movies, and so much more. Read the interview below!
youtube
You recorded two new L.S. Dunes songs - āBenadryl Subredditā and āOld Woundsā - at Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree, California. How did you decide where to record?
I think that the first thing that came into frame for us was where we wanted to record. It had been something that Tucker and I had talked about a lot for a long time. It was always a studio that held such mystique. We loved some of the albums and projects that came out of there and we'd seen the documentaries online. I think our paths had maybe crossed here and there with Dave, who owns it, but never in a working environment. We were able to give him a call and be like, āHey, this is the time frame when weāre gonna be free. Do you happen to have an opening?ā It just so happened that Rancho was free and were like, āOh my god, thatās amazing!ā Someone at our label had mentioned that Alex Newport was also building a studio out in Joshua Tree and if we wanted this could be a one-stop shop for us if we also wanted to work with Alex. Alex has been on my radar for a while too, heās someone I had wanted to work with for years. So we gave him a call and he happened to be free the same weekend. It felt like lightning was striking at that moment. [laughs] Sometimes the Universe tells you, āThis is what you should be doingā and sometimes the Universe tells you, āThatās not happeningā. This was one of those instances where I felt like the stars were aligning and it happened to work out. Then we started to write. For me, it was like, āWhat do I imagine this setting sounding like? What do I wanna play in this setting?ā Thatās how āBenadryl Subredditā came about.
The desert vibes.
Yeah! The desert at night I feel like is fast-moving and semi-dangerous and colder than you would think it would be. [laughs]
And full of scorpions.
[laughs] Of course, yes. That goes without saying.
You are also releasing a documentary about your time recording at the studio calledĀ Limitless Sky. How did that come about?
Since it was a place we wanted to record at and be a part of for so long it was one of those things where we were like, āWe need to capture this memory in case it never happens againā. We were introduced to Pat and Nick Demarais who are amazing artists and filmmakers. Theyāre super, super talented. We saw some of their reels and stuff like that and ended up hitting it off perfectly when they got there. So much so that we ended up doing the video for āBenadrylā with them as well. [laughs] I feel like that kind of thing is you either love the documentarians and film crew who are with you or you hate them and never want to do it again. This was one of those times where we were like, āOh man, we really like having them aroundā. They were seen when they needed to be seen and not seen when they donāt need to be seen and they capture great stuff. I feel like they did such a wonderful job encapsulating the experience.
Part one of the documentary is actually out now and Iām so excited for people to see it because itās just so beautiful. I feel like somehow they made us seem interesting, which is weird. [laughs] I feel like if you love music and you love the process then itās a great documentary for you. If you donāt really give a shit about that and you just want to see something beautiful and be a fly on the wall for something and hear a bit of a story, it works in that way too. It came out way better than I ever thought it was going to be honest because Iām a little trepidatious about that kind of stuff like, āDo people really want to see behind that curtain?ā People will say yes but sometimes they donāt. Like, āI thought this was fun but itās really boringā. [laughs] You have to make it interesting without manufacturing drama or anything like that and I think they did a really great job.
Itās so good when it is what it is and youāre not trying to make stuff happen.
I feel like weāre in this world right now where everybody is trying to manufacture content and that can be a bit daunting and make you feel really weird. But when it happens naturally and you capture this lightning in a bottle, thatās the best-case scenario. It just so happens that everyone in this band really likes hanging out with each other so thereās a lot of that on camera. We have a group Zoom call every week with Brigitte, our manager, to go over whatās happening or things that we need to do, and half the call is her going like, āAlright, alright! Can you stop laughing and joking around for a minute? I have to get to this one thingā. We canāt, itās really fun. I like being in this band a lot.
youtube
Youāve mentioned how L.S. Dunes has an energy to it thatās different from anything youāve ever worked on or bands youāve been in. How would you describe this energy?
I guess the best way to describe it is creative energy. Iām not trying to discount other bands that Iāve been in but this is by far the most creative band. With other projects and with other bands youāll tend to run into this thing like, āAlright, thatās cool but letās table that and weāll come back to it. Weāll see. I donāt know if thatās the right vibe or if thatās the song we want to work on right nowā. Sometimes that works for other bands. For our band, everything gets chased and everything gets worked on. Itās one of those things where everybody loves playing so much. I love the craft of coming in and writing a song with people and seeing where it goes. You canāt be great all the time but you can make something. Sometimes thatāll lead you to something great and sometimes that leads you to a lesson. I just love playing and everybody in this band loves playing. I think the life force that runs through this band is creativity and weāre always making something new, whether thatās recording a demo or writing a new riff or going over old stuff or reimagining old stuff. It doesnāt stop. I love doing that so much and sometimes I feel like I tire out other bands that Iāve been in by doing that but this band doesnāt ever get tired. Itās like the Puppy Bowl! [laughs] Itās kinda like that but with a lot less shit on the floor.
Iām glad thereās less shit on the floor. Iād be concerned if there was more. [laughs]
Me too. [laughs]
For the first album,Ā Past Lives, you recorded remotely but you recorded these two songs in person. What was it like to go from recording separately to recording in person?
It was great! There are some studios you go into and itās almost like a hospital. Itās very sterile and everything has a place. Rancho is like if you took a studio and kinda exploded it in a house. The control is here, thereās amps and guitars everywhere, Daveās cooking for you and youāre tracking, someoneās coming out of the house, and Chunk the dog is jumping up on your lap. Itās very much a family vibe and you feel like youāre a part of that family. I think itās one of those situations where you go in and you fucking love it or you fucking hate it. Itās like sensory overload. So with that, it was perfect for us because we donāt give a fuck. [laughs] Weāre just there to have fun and make something cool. I think if youāre in that vibe without the outside stressors of, āItās gotta be perfect! Itās gotta be greatā it works really well. Itās never going to be perfect but it can be great if you relax a little bit and have fun and thatās really what it was for us. It was awesome. It was really nice to all be in the same room. It was hard for us to focus and not just be fucking around 27/4. It was like, āWe actually have work we have to do!ā [laughs] Not just to play with the dog and touch every guitar in the room. If I had to describe my heaven, that would probably be it. [laughs]
Bring Chunk on tour.
I donāt know if Dave would be cool with that. I have quite a few of my own that if they wanted to come, that would be sick. Heās just the perfect size, he fits into a bunk nicely. [laughs]
Thatās how you decide what dog to adopt.
Yes! I did bring a chihuahua on tour once and she had a good time. Sheās still alive. Sheās almost 15, itās crazy. I think thatās because of tour. I think the longevity gets in there. [laughs]
Do you have a preference between recording remotely or recording in person?
I was with Will Yip the other day and I told him thatĀ Past LivesĀ is probably my favourite sounding record that Iāve ever done in any band as far as sonics are concerned. I didnāt just say this to make him feel good because I really, truly mean this. Listening all the way through I think he did a fantastic job. Itās my favourite sounding record and that was a remote record. I didnāt know going in if I was going to have such a good time doing that because it felt weird. Getting to record with this band with everybody in the same room was great. Thatās what Iām used to so I enjoy that as well. I gotta say there was a lot less stress doing it remotely though. Each have their benefits and it just depends. Thereās so many factors that go into making a record or any kind of recording. It depends on whoās in the room at the time, what amp youāre using, if itās on the fritz, what about the power - is it clean? Thereās so many factors involved. We could do another remote record and it could sound like shit, I have no idea.
I think that they both have their place and I think especially in a band like this where everybody has such crazy schedules. Everybody is so busy doing things and I love that! When youāre in such a creative band like this and youāre out doing other creative things, youāre bringing that creativity back and forth. Itās like a conduit, it just keeps going and going and going. It makes me inspired. I wouldnāt change it even though it can get frustrating.
How would you describe your songwriting process?
Varied. [laughs] Itās funny, I feel like youāll get asked that question a lot because people wanna know what the formula is when you write a song and there is none, really. Thereās a demo that we just finished where Tucker recorded a drumbeat and I ended up getting inspired by that and I wrote a song to that. Thereās no wrong way and thereās no right way. It could start with one person sending a riff through. āBenadrylā started with a guitar riff that I sent through and that verse-chorus thing, that big chunk. The b-section came a little bit later. But once you get inspired, you send that over. If Tucker is home he can put something together really quick and send it your way. We still write pretty much all remotely. Iām at rehearsal right now. So today when we have breaks, Iām sure weāre going to jam on stuff and something will come out. Thatās happened before but thatās more rare because weāre never around each other, unfortunately.
Youāve mentioned that doing things that scare you and that get you out of your comfort zone is very important to you musically and otherwise. What helps you get out of your comfort zone?
Thatās easy, Iām always uncomfortable. [laughs] Sometimes a song will come through and itās like, āAlright, I know I can do this. This works. Itās something Iāve done beforeā. Sometimes a song will tell you where you wanna go. I think the hard part is trying to forget about that like, āThis is the easy way. Throw that out and see where you can go if you had to do something differentā. Thereās different exercises that I like to use where you try to take an instrument like a guitar and be like, āHow would I play this if I never played it before? What if I wanted to play it as if it were a percussion instrument? What if I wanted to try to make a new song out of it?ā That helps sometimes.
Sometimes if I have writerās block and I want to write a song Iāll be like, āI have to write a song but it has to have two chords for a verse and it has to have six chords for a chorus. How do I solve that puzzle?ā If I put myself in a box and I start to figure out ways to problem solve, that can help me crack through. Itās like trying to stand on one foot, it leaves you uneasy and you donāt know how to solve that problem just yet but it gets your brain working. I love doing shit like that. Thereās a recording process I want to try where you get three or four friends and you go into a room and record in a very specific way for a weekend. That kind of stuff to me is scary and uncomfortable but at the same time is so inspiring. You canāt get mad at what comes out of it because youāre putting these constraints around it like fighting a kangaroo with one arm tied behind your back. Thatās crazy! Why would you do that? But at the same time why the fuck not!? Just do that.
Thereās a way!
Thereās always a way! I never want to hear the word ānoā when it comes to creativity, it pisses me off. If I have an idea donāt tell me ānoā right off the bat without trying it or figuring it out first. Letās try to figure it out! At the end it of it, it might be impossible but at least weāve exhausted every possibility. Then youāve already been creative and youāve figured something else out so there might be something new to jump to.
What would you say to somebody whoās having trouble getting out of their comfort zone?
Youāre not trying hard enough! [laughs] I think in a creative mind, itās not that hard to get out of that zone. Iāve been on this earth for quite a while and Iāve done a lot of things but thereās still so many things that I havenāt done or tried or exhausted. When you feel like youāve done it all or you know everything, thatās probably when the learning process should really start. Thereās so much out there! So much to learn and so much to try. You donāt know everything no matter what.
My friend Ray Toro was in town and he came to my house the other day and we were hanging out and talking about different picking techniques. Normally Iāll hold it this way whereās there very little of the pick still sticking out but if youāre trying to get your picking quicker if you turn it on its side and only use this part of your knuckle. It forces your wrist into this really unnatural, very strange position. Heās learning āCliffs of Doverā. Thatās something that heās always wanted to try and heās been working on it for months to really try to play it properly like the way a jazz musician would play it. No hammer-ons, no slides, just picking every note and trying to up the BPMs at which you can pick. Heās one of the greatest players that Iāve ever met and that Iāve ever had the pleasure of playing with. Heās an incredible, incredible player and he was like, āI think I want to take some lessons soonā and I was like, āThatās so cool!ā Thereās such a wealth of knowledge out there. If you want to become enlightened in your craft and you really love your craft thereās so much more you can do. Thereās so much out there, man.
Sometimes people get lost and overlook all the possibilities.
Sometimes weāre our own worst enemies with that kind of stuff. We really say, āItĀ hasĀ to be this way because this is what I doā and itās like, āNo, man, no. You gotta open your mind a little bitā.
The poppies from the cover ofĀ Past LivesĀ play critical roles in your videos for āBenadryl Subredditā and āGrey Veinsā. How would you describe the power of the poppies?
As a power source, an energy source. It can be used in good ways and in bad ways, a lot like anything. If you think of something as positive as love, that concept and that feeling can be really good if done and if used in a good way but it can also be negative if used in a bad way. That line between love and hate is so fine. The poppies are representative of the members of the band. Theyāre representative of the creativity and the energy and power behind our creativity and our minds.
Both of the videos also contain a lot of Easter eggs. In the āGrey Veinsā video, you have the āGhost of Youā combat helmet in there. Which Easter egg are you the most proud of?
[laughs] That video was really fun to make. It took a very long time. We made the city and a very talented young lady named Kelly Harris made the costumes. Coming up with the concept and the different vignettes that we could film to make this world feel believable was quite the undertaking. We filmed it in this old VFW hall and you would never know because itās all in miniature. We were moving the little Lego pieces with string and trying to get them to seem like they were moving on their own. My Good Eye did such an amazing job. Me and Tucker were there for fucking 36 hours straight just moving shit and building shit. It was really, really awesome. It was really, really fun to make.
As far as Easter eggs, thereās so many! Thereās the keytar from āMedicine Square Gardenā which is the final summoning of the rock ānā roll power that comes down and destroys Blobby. Thereās a couple of my sonās toys that made it into the world of the Lego people. My dog tags that my wife and I made when we first started dating are in there. The āGhost of Youā helmet is in there. Itās one of those things where it started from this crazy idea of, āI wanna make a Japanese monster movieā. Iāve always wanted to do it and Iāve pitched that idea probably 30 times. [laughs] This was the first time where I was told, āYeah, you can make thatā. So it was pretty awesome.
Youāve mentioned that monster movies were a big part of you and your dad bonding when you were younger. What did it mean to you to have your kids involved in the video?
Itās awesome! I think theyāre getting to the age now where theyāre more interested in that stuff. Back in the day, I made a video with them for āBest Friends Foreverā which was a song my daughters wrote and they were in the video. It was more like, āHey, listen, Iām going to make a video for the song that we didā and they were like, āOkā and I was like, āYouāre going to be in it!ā and they were like, āOkā. [laughs] I donāt know if they were conscious of what was happening. This was more like they knew. In the video for āBenadrylā my daughter Cherry and my son Miles were in it. Lily is very studious so she told me, āDude, I canātĀ notĀ go to school that day. I have a test coming up. I have two Spanish tests coming up and I canāt miss itā so I was like, āAlright, I get itā. She turned me down but Cherry and Miles were more than happy to skip school to be in the video and eat ice cream all day. [laughs] I think Lily got 108 in four of her classes, in every class sheās in she has A+s. She got her sense of humour and her stomach from me and she gets all her smarts and good looks from her mom.
What do you feel like the connection between music and monster movies is?
For me, itās just the two things that I grew up loving so much and both of the things that I connected with my dad about. I think early on if you were to ask me, āWhat do you wanna be when you grow up?ā the first answer was always, āI wanna be in a bandā. Then people would be like, āYou probably wonāt succeed in that, you need aĀ realĀ job. What else do you wanna do?ā and I would say, āI wanna make monster movies!ā Thatās what I was always interested in. On the weekends, I would go hang out with my dad and we would bee-line it to Palmer Video and he would let me rent whatever I wanted so weād have a stack of monster movies. Then I would go see his band play and watch monster movies all night. Thatās how we spent our weekends. If we didnāt go to rent the movies then we would go to the library and get books on the movies. I actually have one of those now. There was a series of books that told the story of Frankenstein or any of the old Universal Monsters and had stills from the actual film in it. Books about monsters, movies about monsters, and then Iād go see his band play. It was rad! Thatās how I grew up. I had little to no interest or aspirations for anything else. Maybe skateboarding later on but I broke my ankles doing that and I realized that wasnāt for me. [laughs] I couldnāt play guitar if I broke my wrists so I put that to the side, I would just mall grab, I think.
You gotta have priorities.
Yeah! Thatās the thing. If youāre a handsome actor then you canāt get hit in the face. If youāre a musician like I am, a clumsy musician, then you canāt skate and play.
L.S. Dunes will be playing on the Sad Summer touring festival and will be playing headlining shows in the US and Canada starting in July. What are you looking forward to the most about these shows?
Oh man, if you think about it, this is kind of our first US headline tour after Sad Summer. Weāve done limited runs on the East Coast and the West Coast but this is the first time weāre actually getting to do a full loop. Iām looking forward to playing the record and playing new songs. Iām looking forward to playing with Pinkshift and Teen Mortgage and PONY. Iām just looking forward to hanging out with my friends and making music. Honestly, thatās what itās all about for me.
The band recently put aĀ Pride-themed poppy T-shirtĀ up for pre-order with all of the proceeds going towardsĀ The Trevor Project. What does this organization mean to you?
I think theyāre a great organization. I think theyāre helping kids and they have their priorities straight. Itās always hard when picking charities and making sure theyāre vetted and are doing the right thing. The Pride shirt is something I donāt want to take full credit for because that was really a passion project from Tucker. He kept saying, āI really wanna do this for Prideā and I thought it was a great idea. The design came out fantastic and if you can make something cool and help people then itās a win-win. Iām really happy it all came together.
What are you listening to now?
I like that Sweet Pill record that just came out a lot. Thereās a grindcore band from New Jersey called Come Mierda which is basically āeat shitā in Spanish who I think are fucking great. The new Gel record is fantastic! I like that band a lot. Militarie Gun has put out a new great record. The new MSPAINT is great too. I really like Teen Mortgage and Iām digging the new stuff by Pinkshift. Thereās a band from Texas called Glare that I think is really, really cool. Iām always looking for new stuff!
I think sometimes we fall into this ditch of only listening to the same shit that we listened to when we were teenagers and I know a lot of people do that. I think itās cool. Thereās a comforting thing about that. Iāll never turn off a Nirvana record or a Smashing Pumpkins record and Bouncing Souls and Black Flag will always be on. But itās nice to hear newer bands and to see what else is coming down the pipe. I really do enjoy finding new artists. I think itās inspiring and thereās so much cool music out there.
Gotta keep up with it.
Much to my wifeās chagrin about my record collection. It keeps growing. [laughs] Thereās a lot of really cool, really interesting underground newer black metal thatās going on thatās fucking amazing. I think Vide is amazing, Spectral Wound is doing great stuff. Sunās Journey Through The Night is fantastic. Thereās so many great bands. Lamp Of Murmuur is unreal.
Are you still involved in the punk scene in New Jersey?
I donāt know if Iām involved, no oneās coming to me like Iām on the board of anything. [laughs]I was actually doing a session on Sunday otherwise I wouldāve been at the Emperor show in Brooklyn. I love going to shows. Itās hard sometimes when you tour as much as I do and when youāre in the studio and stuff like that, sometimes on your night off you just want to chill. tās funny because when youāre on tour the first things you look around for are music stores, record shops, and shows in town if you have a night off. Iām always down to see something. I think the older I get Iām more at the bigger shows as opposed to the VFW halls and things of that nature. Iāve been lucky enough to catch bands like Incendiary at festivals that weāre playing which is awesome. I feel very fortunate to be able to catch bands like that but Iām always a big proponent of if you like a band you have to see them in their natural habitat and go see the show. I wish I was able to catch Drug Church the last time they were around here but schedules are fucked. Their new single is great.
What does the future hold for L.S. Dunes?
I have no idea! [laughs] It definitely holds new recordings and new music. Itās just a matter of finding time to do it and I canāt wait because I fucking love being in this band. Itās so much fun. Itās one of the greatest experiences Iāve ever had. Iāll do this until the day I die. Itās so much fun.

Newish Comics:
Batman #148: so I read it again and honestly? Still reasonably happy with where this ties things off. It's rushed but Zdarsky manages to use a range of characters (who are the same ones he was focusing on in Gotham War anyway). Excited for the new storyline once we get back on track after Absolute Power.
Birds of Prey #10: I love how much fun they've been having with costume design in this series.
So this is pulling from some interesting and unexpected inspiration places. I'm still trying to get a handle on everything that Kelly Thompson wants to reference, but while Velvet Tiger is a fascinating archive-pull, what more notable to me is I just realised she's framed the Cass and Barda friendship on very similar grounds as the Cass and Basil Karlo friendship. Which is quite a reference to use! It's actually a really neat little marriage up of preboot Cass with Rebirth Cass, hanging onto a nice note.
The Boy Wonder #2: it's the Jason issue! I. Hmmm. Don't necessarily agree with all of Juni Ba's characterisation of Jason here, but that's fine, because it's an interesting interpretation. I did have a little snort at giving Jason glowing green eyes, because it's so very imposed by magic, and it's hmmm an interesting fillip in what people could actually do with Post Lazarus Pit Syndrome if they actually cared about anyone else's dip in the pit and the array of side effects it has had. Sadly... (like, a magic user sending Jason back into the state he was in immediately after coming out of the pit, while actual Pit Madness takes him over for a couple of minutes? And Jason fighting as it wears back off? Fascinating idea! Absolutely not how fandom usually approaches it).
Shazam! #12: Finally we get some more Pedro, Eugene and Darla action. Also nobody loves Hoppy like Josie Campbell loves Hoppy, but I am here for the way she writes this rabbit.
So this is actually quite interesting in terms of the posited distance between Billy and the Captain, because how much they are the same person and how much they are separate people varies between runs and universes. This feels like it's leaning into the way Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam! treats them as two completely separate personalities who can keep secrets from each other.
I also have an impression, from how Campbell writes about this, that she has some experience or connection with fostering and wards of the state, given the way she keeps characterising it for the kids. It's just...really centred on the children's experiences themselves.
The Warlord #55: This week in Skartaris, Travis, Shakira and Tara come across Aram Al Ashir in the middle of a siege on a neighbouring castle as they travel back to Shamballah.
Ashir has his usual effect on the women of the party.
(Ashir was negotiating an arranged marriage to Tara for political reasons about 15 issues ago, if you forgot)
Travis decides to get involved in Ashir's little war because he's the Warlord.
The decision of how to approach the siege is honestly one of the funniest versions of the Trojan horse I've ever seen. Let me break this down for you:
No way.
The castle gets suspicious:
...it's all a distraction as they attack around the back! This is incredible! I am incredulous it worked!
And then by the end of the issue Shakira wanders off to have other adventures, Travis and Tara get back to Shamballah, and we once again highlight that Joshua is still alive and bopping around the background of the books.
(Look how much he's grown!)
