hehehehhe what r the deadly sins of each of the Give Me Away characters?
Starting easy: Liz and Robin r lust, Joshua is pride if either of those need explaining, go listen to the podcast
Thalia also gets to be lust bcuz theyre too well adjusted and the only thing that rlly fits any of the sins is that they wanna fuck Noa and Jade a little bit
Jamie is every sin, at once, BUT if i have to choose one, it's gonna b envy shes so jealous of how everyone views her younger sibling as mature and smart while everyone thinks she's a fuck up
Graham, Graham my bbgirl, his sin is greed or pride
For greed: He wants to have the joy of getting a second and doing what feels like his lifes work and he wants to avoid the emotional backlash from the ppl he loves, but he can't have both
For pride: Him refusing to let Joshua speak at points in the beginning and being initially hesitant to say things how Joshua would say them bcuz he views Joshua as too harsh! Bcuz he believes his morality is superior to Joshua's he limits Joshua's autonomy (good thing for humanity (elon musk), but Joshua's not a fan)
Morgan is wrath! She gets so judgey so quick and fights abt it and it's pretty reasonable tbfuckingh, but it doesn't make her the nicest person
Travis is oooooh boy, independently his sin is sloth, he doesn't act for anything he wants, then feels miserable for not getting it (think the Morgan & Travis "I will let u fuck me" "uh no sorry I can't for uhhhhhh reasons scene"), but with the influence of Parker and Liam his sin is envy all the way he's jealous of everyone who got the things he never did and he's acting on it
Parker and Liam's combined sin is gluttony, they overfeed themselves on pain and power, dining on it with no concern for others (tho tbh a good amount of the sins could fit these bastards)
Brooke and Deidre r pride, they think their methods r the correct ones, the superior ones, and that they have it right, ofc compared to Joshua they kinda r, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hellooooo, I saw the reaction of seventeen to black widow🥺, I could ask you for a second part of that reaction, what would they do when accompanying you on the set, would they talk with the rest of the cast, would they record you or I don't know😘
ooo yall love supportive Seventeen!~ I don't blame y'all. Sorry this took awhile.
Sure I'll do my best <3 In case yall didn't see the black widow one: x
Tumblr media
-> S. Coups:
Seungcheol would blend in to the producers of the movie where he watched. He would NOT want to bring any kind of attention to himself because this was your moment. He wanted to watch you in your element and would be staring at you with such love and pride. He would hug you in between scenes and constantly compliment how you executed scenes. He was the bestest and most perfect partner to bring to filming days.
-> Jeonghan:
Jeonghan would come to filming days as a surprise. He'd have your favorite bouquet of flowers and would order a food truck to come. He wouldn't talk much to the cast because he is a bit more shy but anyone would just know how proud of you he was. He would be smiling at you every time you were acting or just standing on the set. He was so proud of you. <3
-> Joshua:
Oh so boyfriend. That's Jisoo. He would be smiling at you from the background as you slayed every line and would be shocked by the dialogue even if he already knew the script because he helped you with lines shortly before you started to film. He was friendly with the rest of the crew and other actors but he was there for you. Everyone knew that. He was so proud of you.
-> Jun:
Jun would be like a fly on the wall when you were being filmed. He would be monitoring you the whole time and his face would be very similar to how he was while watching the Spell MV. Once certain scenes were finished though he would be all smiles and would tell you how amazing you were. He was your biggest fan and everyone with half a brain cell knew it.
-> Hoshi: (Ok so this is going to be very niche but y'all know im a swiftie/carat atp lmfao just hang with me for a second.)
Y'all know how Travis Kelce looks at Taylor Swift when she's performing or anything like that? Well, that would be Soonyoung with you. He would be staring at you with so much pride and would just have such a soft smile on his face. He would observe everything and would constantly swoon when you would come over to him in between scenes. He was your biggest fan and you along with everyone else knew it.
-> Wonwoo:
I feel like Wonwoo would be fangirling because he was on a Marvel set. Sure he was proud of you but he would just be so into the sets and the plot. If you were to be like "you like Marvel more than me," he would just scoff and say "you are literally Black Widow, I love you the mostest," or he would tease you by saying "depends on the day." Either response would cause your to roll your eyes and kiss his cheek. Overall, I feel like he would be such a supportive partner on set. He'd make sure you were hydrated. If you were sleepy he'd offer his shoulder during breaks. Just so perfect.
-> Woozi:
Even though Jihoon is more comfortable in his own home or studio, he would be at the set whenever he could be. He wanted to show you support just like you did for him. He'd be in the shadows but you would know when he was there. He would be smiling and taking pictures of you. He was just so proud of you doing what you loved and oh my god seeing you in your element was just so precious to him. He enjoyed when he could come to set.
-> DK:
On days Seokmin came to visit you on set, you would feel like a superstar. He would be so soft because this was your moment and not his. He would be watching you kick ass and just would feel so emotional seeing his baby be in her element. During takes, he would constantly compliment you and he would help you with lines if you asked. He was there for you. So many of the crew just found him so precious and would think you both were goals.
-> Mingyu:
Oh this beefcake of a MAN would have his phone out and take so many behind the scenes photos and videos of you acting. Mingyu often would tell you how proud of you he was but he showed every time he came on set. He also became basically part of the crew family. He knew all the directors and so many of the crew staff by name. When he came on set, everyone was so in love with him and his charms but his heart eyes were always directed at you, his precious lil actress.
-> Minghao:
Minghao is one of the members that goes to other members solo or group shoots to show support so naturally he would be at your shoots as well. He would be similar to Jihoon and be in the shadows but during breaks he would be near you and complimenting you. His whole attention would be on you and he just had so much pride toward you.
-> Seungkwan:
Seungkwan would treat your filming days like they were the most fun things ever. He was your personal cheerleader and your happy little pill. No matter the scene, he had such a proud smile on his face and would constantly tell you that you were doing such an amazing job. He would always have an extra iced americano on hand. Some of your coworkers would tease and call him your "assistant" instead of your boyfriend which he'd just joke back and say "isn't that the same thing basically?" lmfaoooo.
-> Vernon:
oh boy Hansol would be cheesing the whole time. When I said he would be there every step of the way I mean it. He would be basically besties with set designers and on first name basis with the director. If people had no idea who Hansol, they would assume he was working on set because that's how often he was there.
-> Dino:
Chan would be your biggest hype man ever. When you got done acting a scene he would have a bottle of water ready for you and would massage your shoulders and shit. He would constantly compliment you and would just feel so much pride. He'd also text his members things like "this movie is going to be the best." He was just so so so proud of you.

List of Official/Official-Adjacent Pacific Rim Media
Here's a list of Pacific Rim media for y'all Pacific Rim fans who want to check out as much of it as possible!
PACIFIC RIM (2013 FILM) Usually considered the primary text of this franchise. Pacific Rim fans mostly agree it's good.
PACIFIC RIM NOVELIZATION BY ALEX IRVINE The novelization of the 2013 film. The book's writer, Alex Irvine, had texts from Legendary Pictures work with, but some of the information was outdated. Furthermore, the book has a cynical, smug tone and comes off like it's written for the type of audience who thinks CinemaSins is actual media criticism. The only thing it's really good for is for scraping out lore, but it's full of contradictions and occasionally uses outdated lore, so you have to compare/contrast it with other materials.
TALES FROM YEAR ZERO Authored by Travis Beacham, this comic explores the origins of the PPDC and the Jaeger program. It's interesting for lore, but story-wise, it might not be engaging if you aren't into Travis Beacham's particular romantic storytelling tastes. Also, if you're a puritan who gets offended when main characters are kinda fucked up people, this isn't for you.
TALES FROM THE DRIFT Authored by Travis Beacham, this comic tells the haters-to-lovers story of Duc and Kaori Jessop, pilots of Tacit Ronin. Mildly interesting for lore, and another romance-oriented story. (Beacham loves those.)
PACIFIC RIM: MAN, MACHINES, & MONSTERS The official artbook. Has some interesting information and lore, though it also contains a few typos and references outdated worldbuilding.
TRAVIS BEACHAM'S TUMBLR After Pacific Rim's release, Travis Beacham answered many fans' questions. While he was often cryptic and straight-up refused to answer certain questions for fear that he'd spoil a future story, he still provided quite a bit of insight. You can visit his old blog at travisbeacham.tumblr.com
PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING Largely panned by fans of the original film. Partway through production, the sequel to Pacific Rim was handed off to another director, and many plot elements were hastily changed with little to no regard for the rich worldbuilding developed by Travis Beacham and Guillermo del Toro, or even story coherency. The film never gives really your brain space to breathe, so it's very difficult to follow the story. Moreover, it misses the thematic and allegorical tones of the first movie, and lacks its occult influences. Overall, it's a hollow followup to Pacific Rim.
PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING NOVELIZATION BY ALEX IRVINE Fundamentally, it's the same story as Pacific Rim: Uprising. The upside is that Alex Irvine's writing is significantly improved, and the story is much easier to follow in novel format. The downside is that you don't have John Boyega's acting talent.
PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING JUNIOR NOVELIZATION BY BECKY MATHESON It's more or less the same as above, but edited down for a younger audience.
THE ART AND MAKING OF PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING The PRU artbook. I've never read this one, so I couldn't tell you what's in it aside from the very obvious.
PACIFIC RIM: AFTERMATH A prequel comic to Pacific Rim: Uprising written by Cavan Scott, Aftermath tells two stories: one focuses on Jake Pentecost and his relationship with his father; the other on what happened to Hannibal Chau and Joshua Griffin (one of Vulcan Specter's pilots) after the kaiju war. The comic makes excellent use of the lore, and the stories are great.
PACIFIC RIM: AMARA A prequel comic that focuses specifically on Amara Namari. I have mixed feelings about it; the mini-Jaeger designs were great but I felt that the actual storyline was a little melodramatic. I dunno, read it for yourself and see what you think.
PACIFIC RIM: ASCENSION A prequel novel to Uprising by Greg Keyes, this story gives life and focus to many characters who didn't get a lot of attention, including the Kaidonovskys and the cadets. Mako Mori is given the narrative respect she deserves, and Hermann Gottlieb's characterization is top-notch. The author makes use of the lore provided by Legendary Pictures to weave a rich and fascinating narrative that puts the actual Uprising film to shame.
MAKING OF/BEHIND THE SCENES VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE There's a number of videos out there on YouTube, which you can find by searching up.
PACIFIC RIM CONCEPT ART There's quite a lot of concept art out there. You can start here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, or search Pinterest or whatever search engine for Pacific Rim concept art.
PACIFIC RIM: THE BLACK A cash grab produced by Netflix, The Black disregards Pacific Rim's rich worldbuilding and follows bland, generic cartoon protagonists through a bland, generic cartoon plot loosely - loosely, mind you - based on the films. It tries to be dark, but it has all the skill of a sixteen year old edgelord about it. Also, the production values are nonexistent. You will miss absolutely nothing worthwhile by skipping over it. If for some reason you really want a Pacific Rim story where child soldiers are framed as a good thing, just read Pacific Rim: Ascension. If you want dark, watch Pulp Fiction or From Dusk 'Til Dawn. If you want a story where somebody makes a religion out of turning people into monsters, watch Midnight Mass or play/watch a no-commentary playthrough of Resident Evil 4 or 8. If you want an AI that looks after two stranded children, watch 3Below. Seriously, there is nothing The Black does that something else doesn't do infinitely better. "But most of these aren't Pacific Rim stories-" Wrong. Any story can be a Pacific Rim story if you're not a coward. And just about anything is a better Pacific Rim story than The Black.
PACIFIC RIM: BLACKOUT Prequel comic to Pacific Rim: The Black. Haven't read it, but it's written by the same guy who wrote Aftermath so it's probably a sight better than The Black.

Newish Comics:
Batman #148: so I read it again and honestly? Still reasonably happy with where this ties things off. It's rushed but Zdarsky manages to use a range of characters (who are the same ones he was focusing on in Gotham War anyway). Excited for the new storyline once we get back on track after Absolute Power.
Birds of Prey #10: I love how much fun they've been having with costume design in this series.
So this is pulling from some interesting and unexpected inspiration places. I'm still trying to get a handle on everything that Kelly Thompson wants to reference, but while Velvet Tiger is a fascinating archive-pull, what more notable to me is I just realised she's framed the Cass and Barda friendship on very similar grounds as the Cass and Basil Karlo friendship. Which is quite a reference to use! It's actually a really neat little marriage up of preboot Cass with Rebirth Cass, hanging onto a nice note.
The Boy Wonder #2: it's the Jason issue! I. Hmmm. Don't necessarily agree with all of Juni Ba's characterisation of Jason here, but that's fine, because it's an interesting interpretation. I did have a little snort at giving Jason glowing green eyes, because it's so very imposed by magic, and it's hmmm an interesting fillip in what people could actually do with Post Lazarus Pit Syndrome if they actually cared about anyone else's dip in the pit and the array of side effects it has had. Sadly... (like, a magic user sending Jason back into the state he was in immediately after coming out of the pit, while actual Pit Madness takes him over for a couple of minutes? And Jason fighting as it wears back off? Fascinating idea! Absolutely not how fandom usually approaches it).
Shazam! #12: Finally we get some more Pedro, Eugene and Darla action. Also nobody loves Hoppy like Josie Campbell loves Hoppy, but I am here for the way she writes this rabbit.
So this is actually quite interesting in terms of the posited distance between Billy and the Captain, because how much they are the same person and how much they are separate people varies between runs and universes. This feels like it's leaning into the way Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam! treats them as two completely separate personalities who can keep secrets from each other.
I also have an impression, from how Campbell writes about this, that she has some experience or connection with fostering and wards of the state, given the way she keeps characterising it for the kids. It's just...really centred on the children's experiences themselves.
The Warlord #55: This week in Skartaris, Travis, Shakira and Tara come across Aram Al Ashir in the middle of a siege on a neighbouring castle as they travel back to Shamballah.
Ashir has his usual effect on the women of the party.
Tumblr media
(Ashir was negotiating an arranged marriage to Tara for political reasons about 15 issues ago, if you forgot)
Travis decides to get involved in Ashir's little war because he's the Warlord.
The decision of how to approach the siege is honestly one of the funniest versions of the Trojan horse I've ever seen. Let me break this down for you:
Tumblr media
No way.
The castle gets suspicious:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...it's all a distraction as they attack around the back! This is incredible! I am incredulous it worked!
And then by the end of the issue Shakira wanders off to have other adventures, Travis and Tara get back to Shamballah, and we once again highlight that Joshua is still alive and bopping around the background of the books.
Tumblr media
(Look how much he's grown!)

⟢ be patient! doing card and chart readings takes time, but card readings are usually easier, so they are likely to be answered first in comparison to chart readings. i am seeing every request and will get to it!

2000 Followers Celebration!!!
& Fallout Alphabet Poll End Results!
Hey all, so the secret is out! (Kinda) But all these past polls have been the prelude to my 2K Followers Celebration BONANZA. (That's not the official title, I just wanted to use the word BONANZA).
Anyway, a HUGE, MASSIVE thank you to every single one of you folks who are a part of this little community and who've supported me and my fanfiction writing journey for the past few years (which is crazy that it's been that long, omg.) But I love and appreciate you all SO MUCH and am absolutely baffled that I've made it to this. I thought 100 was crazy, then I thought 1K was crazy and then it just kept on going! Ahh, I'm just so so so glad that there's a thriving Fallout community out here of amazing writers, artists, and fans that are still so involved 😊
I don't know what I would do without this space, so thank you all for being a part of it <3
ANYWAY (x2) Here are the final results to all 22 polls that I posted, with more event details just below!
So I've posted the 1st place winners, 2nd place, and then a 3rd "runner up" position that will only be filled by non-companion npcs, just to give them a chance to shine, and me a chance to write for some folks I'm not as used to. For the purposes of the 2k event, I will only be using the 1st place winners for the 'prompts' (which I'll explain in another post), and then a few of the 2nd placers and (almost) all of the runner ups will be used in ANOTHER upcoming event that I'm going to start prepping for (because I'm an insane person).

Okay here is the final list of all the books I’ve finished this year! (since it doesn’t look like I’m going to get anything finished or even started this week.)
I tend to not finish things if I’m not enjoying them (two exceptions on this list because sometimes I am spiteful), so I liked all of these—but the ones in bold are those I particularly loved (I only bolded one per series or it would just be a wall of The Murderbot Diaries lol).
LGBT+ books read: 48
wlw books read: 22
trans/nb books: 17
I’m very happy with my year in reading. I hit my new year’s goal of 52 books finished. And I read a lot of things that I really fucking loved. Lots of robots. LOTS of scifi/fantasy sapphics which I am SO happy about. Some good horror, some good fucky “romances”. A lot of things written in response to the Trump era or written during 2020 lockdown.
I also enjoyed partaking in online book fandom for the first time in possibly ever! Especially Murderbot fandom, which is very active and creative and lovely.
(If you followed me for my bookblogging, thank you for enduring my Thai BL vroom vroom omegaverse brainrot. It will not be stopping anytime soon.)
For 2024, I am going to keep my goal at 52 books and save any extra time I have for rereading old things.

One Shot/One Song #3 - Yoon Jeonghan
Tumblr media
Stubborn Souls
Yoon Jeonghan x Reader
Inspired By:  Foolish Pride – Travis Tritt
Summary: Jeonghan’s hiding a secret that proves to be the death of your relationship. Both of you are too proud to admit you were wrong. Who will be the first to let go of their ego and save your love?
Word Count: 4,053
Genre: angsty, a little hope at the end
Warnings/Contains: mild arguing, nothing too triggering (I hope!)
You don’t even remember why you started arguing to begin with. But you do know that you’re sick of it. The last few months all you and Jeonghan have done is bicker. Something has changed and he isn’t the same man you fell in love with.
“All we do anymore is fight!” you exclaim. “No matter what I say, you always have to have the last word; you always have to be right. You’re overbearing and it’s suffocating!”
“Maybe I should just leave. Then you’ll be able to breathe.”
“That’s not what I meant Jeonghan, and you know it!”
“But isn’t it?” He stands up and walks toward the door. “There’s not much room there for interpretation.”
His hand is on the door. “Where are you going?” you shout.
“I’m giving you room to breathe.” He opens the door and walks out.
Four months have passed since your breakup. Four of the hardest, messiest, and loneliest months of your life. You spend your nights crying into your pillow, fighting off the urge to break down and call him. You’ve told yourself that you’re not going to be the one to give in. You won’t be weak. It leaves you miserable, but you can’t find a way to let go of him. So, you relive every painful memory.
You call Jeonghan over and over, frantic to hear his voice after he walked out. But he doesn’t answer. He doesn’t answer all afternoon. He doesn’t answer all evening. And he doesn’t answer all night.
The next morning, he walks in as if nothing happened.
“Where have you been?” you scream at him. “You don’t even have the decency to pick up your phone!”
“You said you were suffocating, but you’re the one smothering me.” His composure angers you.
“I was worried, Jeonghan! You just walked out; you should have told me where you were going!”
“I didn’t want to be overbearing.” He draws out the last word, digging his knife deeper into your heart.
“Jeonghan, that’s not fair.” you whisper. You hang your head as your eyes cloud with tears. You don’t want him to see your hurt. He doesn’t need any more fuel to add to his fire.
“I didn’t realize we were playing fair, dear.” His voice is smooth as silk, laced with acidic sarcasm.
You feel utterly defeated. This is not the Jeonghan you know. This is a complete stranger.
“You know what?” you finally mutter, your chest aching with sadness. “I don’t wanna play anything, anymore. You win. The competition’s over.”
You turn and walk toward the bedroom. When you close the door behind you, your knees buckle, and tears flood your cheeks. You bury your head in your hands and sob. You can’t play his game anymore; it’s too exhausting.
Joshua had taken you in after the breakup. He was a friend to both of you, so you should have declined his offer, but in your disarray, you needed something familiar. And that’s where you’ve been since. You still can’t bring yourself to find your own place, it would make the breakup too final.
“Y/N?”
You’ve been staring into space when Joshua’s voice pulls you back.
“You really should eat something,” he suggests.
“I’m just not hungry.” You manage half a smile.
He reaches across the table and takes your hand. “You can’t go on like this, Y/N.”
“I know, Shua,” you sigh. “I just need a little more time. I’ll get over him soon. I know I will.” You’re ashamed that you’re still pining after Jeonghan, considering what happened between you.
“You don’t have to get over him, Y/N. You still love each other. It’s obvious to everyone except the two of you.”
“Even if that’s true, I can’t go back. Not after everything. Not after he…”
“I know he hurt you. He wasn’t thinking straight. It didn’t mean anything. If you would just talk to him, you’d find out the truth.”
“Why should I? All that comes out of his mouth are lies. He doesn’t know what the truth is.”
Jeonghan wakes you up when he crawls into bed. You look at the clock. Practice should have been over hours ago. He slides his arms around you and pulls you close to him, burying his face in your hair.
“How was practice?”
“Brutal,” he mumbles.
In a few minutes he’s snoring, but you’re unable to go back to sleep. You slide from the bed and tiptoe to the kitchen for a glass of water. The counter is cluttered with Jeonghan’s things, he must have just thrown everything out of his pockets. He didn’t even bother to plug up his phone. You shake your head; sometimes he can be so lazy.
You pick up the change and throw it into the money jar on the counter. You hang up his keys and throw away the receipts and gum wrappers. When you go to pick up his phone, it buzzes in your hand. You’re surprised to see a text from Cheol this late at night.
“If you walk out of practice like that one more time, I won’t let it go. This is becoming ridiculous. It’s going to take time to get back in shape. You have to be patient. You can’t just give up.”
What does he mean ‘walk out of practice?’ And one more time? How many times has this happened? Most importantly, why is it happening?
When Jeonghan comes into the kitchen the next morning, you kiss him on the cheek just like every other morning and ask him if he slept well. He runs his fingers through his hair and nods. As you’re making his breakfast, you ask him about the night before.
“You got home so late, Hannie. Did you have an extra-long practice?”
He nods again. “The new choreography is tough so it’s going to need a lot of work.”
“And everything’s going well?” you ask. “With your elbow, I mean.”
“Of course, Y/N. Everything’s fine. I’m not the one who needs the extra practice.”
You turn back to the stove to finish making breakfast. You never imagined that Jeonghan could lie straight to your face and not even blink.
Six months have now passed since your breakup. Joshua’s been nothing but helpful and understanding. He’s never tried to get rid of you or told you to get your own place. He’s fully supported all of your decisions and he’s been an amazing friend. But you know it’s time to move on. It’s the only way you’re going to be able to let Jeonghan go for good.
You’re scrolling through ads for apartments when your phone buzzes beside you. It’s Joshua. He left the sheet music for their new song on the piano at home. Cheol is on edge already so he needs you to bring it by the company as soon as you can before Cheol finds out and loses it. Another text immediately follows.
Jeonghan isn’t here. He’s with the doctor checking his elbow.
Your heart drops at the thought of going to the company. You haven’t even set foot on the same street since that night. Your mind races at the thought. Another text.
Please, Y/N. I wouldn’t ask you if I wasn’t desperate.
He’s been so good to you, you can’t say no. You owe him. You close your eyes and swallow hard. Putting on your shoes, you fight against the urge to run in the opposite direction. You owe Joshua.
You want to try one more time. You and Jeonghan have been together too long to throw everything away. He agreed to meet you. It must mean he feels the same.
You pause before walking through the door of the practice room where he asked to meet. Your heart is pounding; you take a deep breath to steady yourself. You know the man you love is still in there somewhere, you just have to find a way to get to him.
When you open the door, the lights are dim, except for a spotlight in the corner of the room. It takes a second for your eyes to adjust to the darkness, but when they do, that’s when you see her.
You’ve made it all the way to the front door. Maybe you should text Joshua to meet you outside. No, you have to do this to start getting over Jeonghan. You won’t spend the rest of your life fixated on a man who only cares about himself. You deserve more than that. You’re worth more than that. You hold your head high and push through the door. The staff smile at you and wave. You head up the stairs to meet Joshua.
When you step off the elevator, you hear raised voices. The boys are always loud and playful, and the thought makes you smile. You miss this. As you walk further down the hall, you can hear that in fact, the voices aren’t at all playful.
The first one you hear is Jeonghan, and you freeze. He wasn’t supposed to be here.
“I’ll be damned if I’ll crawl!” he cries. Someone is pacing back and forth.
The second one belongs to Joshua. “Who’s to blame doesn’t matter! You’re destroying both of your lives with your foolish pride! Just apologize; it would be so simple!”
“She’s better off without me. I was a piece of shit boyfriend, and now I’m a piece of shit idol too. Looks like it’s my destiny.”
“Damn it, Jeonghan!” Joshua hisses. “I know you still love her. You’re using that as an excuse because you feel vulnerable with everything happening right now.”
“Vulnerable?” His laugh is cocky, and you can imagine the smug smile on his face.
“If you lose her,” Joshua continues, “you’ll lose your best friend, your lover, and your everything. And if you don’t fix this soon, you won’t have anything left.”
He barrels through the door, and his eyes widen when he sees you standing there. He’s about to say something when there’s a loud crash behind him. You both look up to see Jeonghan wringing his hand and cursing under his breath. There’s a hole in the wall beside where he’s standing and a look of utter devastation on his face.
You’re a block from your apartment when it starts pouring rain. By the time you reach home, you’re drenched. You look up and standing under the awning is Jeonghan.
“What are you doing here?” you ask.
“Y/N, you look like a drowned rat!”
“Did you come here for a specific reason, or just to point out the obvious?” You huff at him and roll your eyes.
“Uh, actually, I came here to tell you something.”
“Well, can we go inside first? As you so kindly pointed out, I’m drenched.” You start to walk past him to the stairs, and he grabs your hand.
“Wait, Y/N. Just let me say this.”
Crossing your arms, you sigh. “What is it?”
“I like you.”
“Oh.”
He chuckles awkwardly. “Is there anything else you could say? I’m starting to feel a little self-conscious.”
“Jeonghan, I…it’s just…this isn’t a joke, is it?”
His eyebrows furrow, his look turning serious. “No, it’s not a joke, Y/N. I really like you.”
“You promise you’re not just teasing me?”
He grins widely. “I promise.”
Unexpectedly, you feel timid. You’ve imagined this scenario a million times, but never in your wildest dreams did you think it would become reality. And in your imagination, you’re so much more confident.
“Y/N?”
“I…I like you too, Jeonghan. Very much.”
He laughs again, but all the awkwardness is gone. He takes your hand and pulls you back out into the rain.
“Jeonghan! What are you doing?!”
“Celebrating!”
He’s beaming. He wraps his arms around you, picks you up, and spins you around. He looks at you, an adoring smile on his face. You slide out of his arms to the ground, and he pulls you close. The rain drips down your face, and you close your eyes. You can’t help but smile as his lips meet yours.
You’ve been in bed for the last hour, but you haven’t been sleeping. You haven’t been able to get the look on Jeonghan’s face out of your mind. You’ve tried to erase it with happy memories of the two of you, but you can’t stop your heart from breaking at the grief in his eyes.
There’sa soft knocking on your door. It opens a crack, and Joshua peeks his face around the edge. “Are you asleep Y/N?” he asks in a soft voice.
You sit up and invite him in.
He looks at you pitifully. “Are you okay?”
You nod.
“You don’t have to be strong with me, Y/N.” He pauses. “He wasn’t supposed to be there. When he showed up, I lost it. That’s how we ended up yelling at each other.”
“I would have had to see him sooner or later.” You sit quietly for a minute. There’s something else he wants to say, but he’s hesitating. “What is it, Shua?”
“He still loves you.”
“You don’t hook up with random trainees if you love someone,” you reply bitterly.
“That’s not what happened.”
“You’re defending him?!” You’re appalled.
“I’m not defending him! What he did was wrong. But if you just talk to him, you’ll find out everything’s not exactly as it seemed.”
“Her tongue was in his mouth, Joshua. It doesn’t get much clearer than that.”
You want to close your eyes, but you can’t look away. You want to run, but your feet are rooted to the ground. You can’t believe the man standing in front of you is the same Jeonghan you thought you knew.
She’s clinging to him for dear life and his hands are all over her. If she was any closer, they’d fuse into one being. She kisses the side of his neck, and that’s when he looks at you. There’s no remorse, no guilt in his eyes, only emptiness.
Eleven months have now passed. You can’t find a way to take a single step forward; you’re stuck in an endless cycle of love and loathing.
So Joshua’s invited some of the guys over in an attempt to cheer you up. You agreed it might be good to see some warm, familiar faces. Since you avoid the company, you rarely get to see any of them. Joshua swears they all miss you.
And once everyone’s crowded into the tiny apartment, you realize he’s right. The sound of their voices laughing and the warmth their presence exudes makes your heart happy. You smile a real smile for the first time in months. When everyone needs more drinks, you head to the kitchen to grab another round.
Someone’s left the door to the patio open. The air is getting colder as it gets dark, so you cross the room to shut it. For the second time that week, you’re taken by surprise to hear Jeonghan’s voice. This time, it’s over FaceTime. Dino must have slipped onto the patio to talk to him so you wouldn’t get upset.
“Hyung, just apologize,” he implores. “Tell her it didn’t mean anything.”
“It didn’t mean anything! I’m disgusted with myself for even thinking that was the right way to make her forget me. And that I actually did it? I can barely look at myself in the mirror.”
“Then tell her that!” Dino pleads. “Tell her that you were wrong. You shouldn’t have hidden the truth from her. Tell her you still love her.”
Jeonghan’s voice is full of sadness. “I can’t Dino. I hurt her too badly. I was crazy to push her away, and now she can’t forgive me. She doesn’t love me anymore. I still love her, but it’s too late to go back.”
You can’t listen anymore. You pull the door shut. When it slams, Dino jumps and turns around. He sees you standing there, and his eyes are filled with pity.
“Go ahead and leave, I couldn’t care less.”
Jeonghan’s words tear at your heart. How could he have changed so much in such a short time? Or maybe this is who he really is, and you’ve been blind to the truth. You don’t try to hide your tears this time. He’s going to torture you no matter what.
With your suitcase in your hand, you head for the door. Before you walk out, you look at him one final time.
“Has everything between us been a lie? Did you ever really love me?”
For just a moment, something akin to regret flashes in his eyes. He quickly hardens his look and, crossing his arms, he turns away from you. “No, Y/N. I don’t love you.”
You quietly close the door behind you and slip away. There’s nothing left for you there.
Dino’s the last one to leave the apartment. As you say goodbye at the door, he pauses.
“So, you heard everything, huh?” You nod. “Please, Y/N. Don’t be like him. Don’t be stubborn and let your love die for the sake of your pride. He needs you.” He envelops you in a tight hug, then says goodbye.
His words echo in your mind. He needs you. Something bigger is going on with Jeonghan than anyone is saying.
You crawl into bed and pull your covers close around you. Does it really matter anymore who was to blame? You heard him say that he still loves you. There’s a chance that you could fix what happened if you just let go of your ego and talk to him. How much would it really hurt you to just give in and talk to him? And how much will you be hurt in the long run if you don’t try everything in your power to break through his walls?
Before you can talk yourself out of it, you grab your phone and text him.
Can we talk?
Your heart pounds as you wait for a response. It feels like an eternity, but it’s only five minutes before your phone buzzes with his reply.
Can I come over now? Please.
You swallow hard. You’re scared to hope. But he wouldn’t ask to come over just to reject you again. The Jeonghan you love isn’t that heartless.
“No peeking, Y/N!” Jeonghan whines. He doesn’t want his surprise to be ruined.
He holds your hand tightly as he leads you down the hall. You’re just glad to finally be out of the bedroom. He made you stay in there all afternoon while he and Mingyu were conspiring together.
He finally stops. “Okay, Y/N. Open your eyes.”
The first place you look is at him and he’s beaming with pride. You follow his gaze. Candles are lit all around the room and a huge bouquet of flowers is the centerpiece of a beautifully set table.
“Mingyu helped me cook dinner,” he informs you as he pulls out your chair. “I hope it’s edible,” he adds with a chuckle.
“Jeonghan, I’m sure it’s wonderful, but what’s the occasion?”
He sits down beside you and takes your hand in his. “I know we’ve only been seeing each other for a little while, but…”
His face flushes scarlet and he pauses. You squeeze his hand letting him know you’re listening.
“I wanted everything to be special the first time I told you…the first time I told you…that I love you.”
You can’t stop the smile that’s slowly spreading across your face. That he would put in so much effort to make such a simple moment special completely melts your heart. You’re absolutely smitten.
“I love you too, Jeonghan.”
You’re sitting outside the apartment when Jeonghan walks up. Joshua’s already gone to bed, and you didn’t want the doorbell to wake him.
“Hi.”
The softness and familiarity of his voice sends a surge of warmth through your chest. It’s been a long time since you heard any trace of gentleness in his words. “Can we take a walk?” he asks.
You stand up to accompany him and the two of you walk in silence for a while. It’s awkward, but it’s a start. It’s chilly on the street, and you shiver. You only have on a hoodie; you weren’t sure what to expect.
“Are you cold, Y/N?”
You shake your head. “I’m okay.”
He gestures to a nearby bench. “Do you want to sit?”
You take a seat on the bench, turning your body to face him. It’s obvious there’s so much you both want to say, but neither one of you knows where to begin. With your pulse pounding in your throat, you make the first move.
“Are you okay, Jeonghan?” You look into his eyes and they’re full of devastation.
“I’m really not.” He’s finally ready to tell the truth. You slide closer and take his hand in yours. You don’t need to say anything, you just need to listen. His words come pouring out like a flood.
“I’m so sorry, Y/N. I was wrong. I treated you terribly and I wouldn’t blame you if you never forgive me. My behavior was atrocious. I should have told you the truth from the beginning instead of trying to push you away. But I was terrified your opinion of me would change, and I thought it would be better for you if I just let you go. I couldn’t stand the thought of letting you down.”
“My love for you is not that fickle, Jeonghan.”
He hangs his head in shame. “I know that. Now.”
“Why did you try to push me away?” you ask. He’s quiet for a few minutes before he musters enough courage to speak again.
“When I hurt my elbow, at first, I just laughed it off. I was convinced it wasn’t a big deal. But it hasn’t healed the way I thought it would.” His shoulders sag.
“You told me that everything was fine. Why did you lie?”
“I pushed myself too hard. I needed to recover so I wouldn’t let you down. But I only made things worse. I couldn’t do what I used to, and I wasn’t getting better. It was too hard to accept that I couldn’t immediately bounce back, so I was going to give up. And I thought that you wouldn’t love me anymore if I couldn’t be an idol. I wouldn’t be able to give you the life you deserve, and…I was ashamed.”
“Being less than perfect would never have let me down, Hannie.” You stop yourself. You want to tell him that it’s what he did to push you away that let you down. But that doesn’t even matter anymore.
“Go ahead and say it, Y/N. I deserve every bad thing you could say about me.”
“We both know what happened, Jeonghan, so there’s no need to relive the past. It’s too painful and it won’t do any good to berate you. It’s obvious that you regret what you did.”
He reaches for you but hesitates. His hand drops and he hangs his head. “I do, Y/N. I regret it more than you could ever know. If I could go back in time, I never would have lied to you, or pushed you away, or…or…”
You put a finger to his lips to keep him from saying anything else. You’ve replayed that scene in your mind enough times, you don’t need another reminder. Gently, he covers your hand and draws it to his chest.
His voice falls to a whisper. “It didn’t mean anything Y/N. I haven’t seen or talked to her since. I only care about you.” Looking up at you with expectant eyes, he says, “I only love you.”
Your heart pounds in your throat. It’s all you’ve wanted to hear for the past year. This is the real Jeonghan. This is the man you love. You reach out to touch his cheek, and his eyes close at the contact.
“And I only love you, Yoon Jeonghan.”
“Can you ever forgive me, Y/N?”
“I can’t go back to the way things were like nothing happened.”
He frowns. “I know, but do you want to? Go back to the way things were, that is.”
You can tell he’s nervous to hear your answer. “More than anything.”

In conversation with Frank Iero of L.S. Dunes
BY EM MOORE INTERVIEWS 9 HOURS AGO
June 30th, 2023
In 2022 L.S. Dunes, made up of Frank Iero, Travis Stever, Anthony Green, Tim Payne, and Tucker Rule, introduced themselves to the world on their outstanding debut album Past Lives. Recently, the band headed into the desert to record a couple of new tracks at the legendary Rancho De La Luna studio in Joshua Tree, California. Filmmakers Nick and Pat Demarais joined them in the studio to document the recording process and their documentary Limitless Sky will be released in several parts on YouTube in the coming weeks. The first song from this session, “Benadryl Subreddit” was released last week along with a music video that answers the question, “What if Anthony Green was an ice cream man?”. L.S. Dunes will be putting out their 7-inch featuring "Benadryl Subreddit" and "Old Wounds" on September 1 via Fantasy Records and will be touring North America starting in July, including dates on the Sad Summer touring festival.
Punknews editor Em Moore caught up with guitarist Frank Iero over Zoom to talk about recording new songs, getting out of your comfort zone, the importance of creativity, the magic of monster movies, and so much more. Read the interview below!
youtube
You recorded two new L.S. Dunes songs - “Benadryl Subreddit” and “Old Wounds” - at Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree, California. How did you decide where to record?
I think that the first thing that came into frame for us was where we wanted to record. It had been something that Tucker and I had talked about a lot for a long time. It was always a studio that held such mystique. We loved some of the albums and projects that came out of there and we'd seen the documentaries online. I think our paths had maybe crossed here and there with Dave, who owns it, but never in a working environment. We were able to give him a call and be like, “Hey, this is the time frame when we’re gonna be free. Do you happen to have an opening?” It just so happened that Rancho was free and were like, “Oh my god, that’s amazing!” Someone at our label had mentioned that Alex Newport was also building a studio out in Joshua Tree and if we wanted this could be a one-stop shop for us if we also wanted to work with Alex. Alex has been on my radar for a while too, he’s someone I had wanted to work with for years. So we gave him a call and he happened to be free the same weekend. It felt like lightning was striking at that moment. [laughs] Sometimes the Universe tells you, “This is what you should be doing” and sometimes the Universe tells you, “That’s not happening”. This was one of those instances where I felt like the stars were aligning and it happened to work out. Then we started to write. For me, it was like, “What do I imagine this setting sounding like? What do I wanna play in this setting?” That’s how “Benadryl Subreddit” came about.
The desert vibes.
Yeah! The desert at night I feel like is fast-moving and semi-dangerous and colder than you would think it would be. [laughs]
And full of scorpions.
[laughs] Of course, yes. That goes without saying.
You are also releasing a documentary about your time recording at the studio called Limitless Sky. How did that come about?
Since it was a place we wanted to record at and be a part of for so long it was one of those things where we were like, “We need to capture this memory in case it never happens again”. We were introduced to Pat and Nick Demarais who are amazing artists and filmmakers. They’re super, super talented. We saw some of their reels and stuff like that and ended up hitting it off perfectly when they got there. So much so that we ended up doing the video for “Benadryl” with them as well. [laughs] I feel like that kind of thing is you either love the documentarians and film crew who are with you or you hate them and never want to do it again. This was one of those times where we were like, “Oh man, we really like having them around”. They were seen when they needed to be seen and not seen when they don’t need to be seen and they capture great stuff. I feel like they did such a wonderful job encapsulating the experience.
Part one of the documentary is actually out now and I’m so excited for people to see it because it’s just so beautiful. I feel like somehow they made us seem interesting, which is weird. [laughs] I feel like if you love music and you love the process then it’s a great documentary for you. If you don’t really give a shit about that and you just want to see something beautiful and be a fly on the wall for something and hear a bit of a story, it works in that way too. It came out way better than I ever thought it was going to be honest because I’m a little trepidatious about that kind of stuff like, “Do people really want to see behind that curtain?” People will say yes but sometimes they don’t. Like, “I thought this was fun but it’s really boring”. [laughs] You have to make it interesting without manufacturing drama or anything like that and I think they did a really great job.
It’s so good when it is what it is and you’re not trying to make stuff happen.
I feel like we’re in this world right now where everybody is trying to manufacture content and that can be a bit daunting and make you feel really weird. But when it happens naturally and you capture this lightning in a bottle, that’s the best-case scenario. It just so happens that everyone in this band really likes hanging out with each other so there’s a lot of that on camera. We have a group Zoom call every week with Brigitte, our manager, to go over what’s happening or things that we need to do, and half the call is her going like, “Alright, alright! Can you stop laughing and joking around for a minute? I have to get to this one thing”. We can’t, it’s really fun. I like being in this band a lot.
youtube
You’ve mentioned how L.S. Dunes has an energy to it that’s different from anything you’ve ever worked on or bands you’ve been in. How would you describe this energy?
I guess the best way to describe it is creative energy. I’m not trying to discount other bands that I’ve been in but this is by far the most creative band. With other projects and with other bands you’ll tend to run into this thing like, “Alright, that’s cool but let’s table that and we’ll come back to it. We’ll see. I don’t know if that’s the right vibe or if that’s the song we want to work on right now”. Sometimes that works for other bands. For our band, everything gets chased and everything gets worked on. It’s one of those things where everybody loves playing so much. I love the craft of coming in and writing a song with people and seeing where it goes. You can’t be great all the time but you can make something. Sometimes that’ll lead you to something great and sometimes that leads you to a lesson. I just love playing and everybody in this band loves playing. I think the life force that runs through this band is creativity and we’re always making something new, whether that’s recording a demo or writing a new riff or going over old stuff or reimagining old stuff. It doesn’t stop. I love doing that so much and sometimes I feel like I tire out other bands that I’ve been in by doing that but this band doesn’t ever get tired. It’s like the Puppy Bowl! [laughs] It’s kinda like that but with a lot less shit on the floor.
I’m glad there’s less shit on the floor. I’d be concerned if there was more. [laughs]
Me too. [laughs]
For the first album, Past Lives, you recorded remotely but you recorded these two songs in person. What was it like to go from recording separately to recording in person?
It was great! There are some studios you go into and it’s almost like a hospital. It’s very sterile and everything has a place. Rancho is like if you took a studio and kinda exploded it in a house. The control is here, there’s amps and guitars everywhere, Dave’s cooking for you and you’re tracking, someone’s coming out of the house, and Chunk the dog is jumping up on your lap. It’s very much a family vibe and you feel like you’re a part of that family. I think it’s one of those situations where you go in and you fucking love it or you fucking hate it. It’s like sensory overload. So with that, it was perfect for us because we don’t give a fuck. [laughs] We’re just there to have fun and make something cool. I think if you’re in that vibe without the outside stressors of, “It’s gotta be perfect! It’s gotta be great” it works really well. It’s never going to be perfect but it can be great if you relax a little bit and have fun and that’s really what it was for us. It was awesome. It was really nice to all be in the same room. It was hard for us to focus and not just be fucking around 27/4. It was like, “We actually have work we have to do!” [laughs] Not just to play with the dog and touch every guitar in the room. If I had to describe my heaven, that would probably be it. [laughs]
Bring Chunk on tour.
I don’t know if Dave would be cool with that. I have quite a few of my own that if they wanted to come, that would be sick. He’s just the perfect size, he fits into a bunk nicely. [laughs]
That’s how you decide what dog to adopt.
Yes! I did bring a chihuahua on tour once and she had a good time. She’s still alive. She’s almost 15, it’s crazy. I think that’s because of tour. I think the longevity gets in there. [laughs]
Do you have a preference between recording remotely or recording in person?
I was with Will Yip the other day and I told him that Past Lives is probably my favourite sounding record that I’ve ever done in any band as far as sonics are concerned. I didn’t just say this to make him feel good because I really, truly mean this. Listening all the way through I think he did a fantastic job. It’s my favourite sounding record and that was a remote record. I didn’t know going in if I was going to have such a good time doing that because it felt weird. Getting to record with this band with everybody in the same room was great. That’s what I’m used to so I enjoy that as well. I gotta say there was a lot less stress doing it remotely though. Each have their benefits and it just depends. There’s so many factors that go into making a record or any kind of recording. It depends on who’s in the room at the time, what amp you’re using, if it’s on the fritz, what about the power - is it clean? There’s so many factors involved. We could do another remote record and it could sound like shit, I have no idea.
I think that they both have their place and I think especially in a band like this where everybody has such crazy schedules. Everybody is so busy doing things and I love that! When you’re in such a creative band like this and you’re out doing other creative things, you’re bringing that creativity back and forth. It’s like a conduit, it just keeps going and going and going. It makes me inspired. I wouldn’t change it even though it can get frustrating.
How would you describe your songwriting process?
Varied. [laughs] It’s funny, I feel like you’ll get asked that question a lot because people wanna know what the formula is when you write a song and there is none, really. There’s a demo that we just finished where Tucker recorded a drumbeat and I ended up getting inspired by that and I wrote a song to that. There’s no wrong way and there’s no right way. It could start with one person sending a riff through. “Benadryl” started with a guitar riff that I sent through and that verse-chorus thing, that big chunk. The b-section came a little bit later. But once you get inspired, you send that over. If Tucker is home he can put something together really quick and send it your way. We still write pretty much all remotely. I’m at rehearsal right now. So today when we have breaks, I’m sure we’re going to jam on stuff and something will come out. That’s happened before but that’s more rare because we’re never around each other, unfortunately.
You’ve mentioned that doing things that scare you and that get you out of your comfort zone is very important to you musically and otherwise. What helps you get out of your comfort zone?
That’s easy, I’m always uncomfortable. [laughs] Sometimes a song will come through and it’s like, “Alright, I know I can do this. This works. It’s something I’ve done before”. Sometimes a song will tell you where you wanna go. I think the hard part is trying to forget about that like, “This is the easy way. Throw that out and see where you can go if you had to do something different”. There’s different exercises that I like to use where you try to take an instrument like a guitar and be like, “How would I play this if I never played it before? What if I wanted to play it as if it were a percussion instrument? What if I wanted to try to make a new song out of it?” That helps sometimes.
Sometimes if I have writer’s block and I want to write a song I’ll be like, “I have to write a song but it has to have two chords for a verse and it has to have six chords for a chorus. How do I solve that puzzle?” If I put myself in a box and I start to figure out ways to problem solve, that can help me crack through. It’s like trying to stand on one foot, it leaves you uneasy and you don’t know how to solve that problem just yet but it gets your brain working. I love doing shit like that. There’s a recording process I want to try where you get three or four friends and you go into a room and record in a very specific way for a weekend. That kind of stuff to me is scary and uncomfortable but at the same time is so inspiring. You can’t get mad at what comes out of it because you’re putting these constraints around it like fighting a kangaroo with one arm tied behind your back. That’s crazy! Why would you do that? But at the same time why the fuck not!? Just do that.
There’s a way!
There’s always a way! I never want to hear the word ‘no’ when it comes to creativity, it pisses me off. If I have an idea don’t tell me ‘no’ right off the bat without trying it or figuring it out first. Let’s try to figure it out! At the end it of it, it might be impossible but at least we’ve exhausted every possibility. Then you’ve already been creative and you’ve figured something else out so there might be something new to jump to.
What would you say to somebody who’s having trouble getting out of their comfort zone?
You’re not trying hard enough! [laughs] I think in a creative mind, it’s not that hard to get out of that zone. I’ve been on this earth for quite a while and I’ve done a lot of things but there’s still so many things that I haven’t done or tried or exhausted. When you feel like you’ve done it all or you know everything, that’s probably when the learning process should really start. There’s so much out there! So much to learn and so much to try. You don’t know everything no matter what.
My friend Ray Toro was in town and he came to my house the other day and we were hanging out and talking about different picking techniques. Normally I’ll hold it this way where’s there very little of the pick still sticking out but if you’re trying to get your picking quicker if you turn it on its side and only use this part of your knuckle. It forces your wrist into this really unnatural, very strange position. He’s learning “Cliffs of Dover”. That’s something that he’s always wanted to try and he’s been working on it for months to really try to play it properly like the way a jazz musician would play it. No hammer-ons, no slides, just picking every note and trying to up the BPMs at which you can pick. He’s one of the greatest players that I’ve ever met and that I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing with. He’s an incredible, incredible player and he was like, “I think I want to take some lessons soon” and I was like, “That’s so cool!” There’s such a wealth of knowledge out there. If you want to become enlightened in your craft and you really love your craft there’s so much more you can do. There’s so much out there, man.
Sometimes people get lost and overlook all the possibilities.
Sometimes we’re our own worst enemies with that kind of stuff. We really say, “It has to be this way because this is what I do” and it’s like, “No, man, no. You gotta open your mind a little bit”.
The poppies from the cover of Past Lives play critical roles in your videos for “Benadryl Subreddit” and “Grey Veins”. How would you describe the power of the poppies?
As a power source, an energy source. It can be used in good ways and in bad ways, a lot like anything. If you think of something as positive as love, that concept and that feeling can be really good if done and if used in a good way but it can also be negative if used in a bad way. That line between love and hate is so fine. The poppies are representative of the members of the band. They’re representative of the creativity and the energy and power behind our creativity and our minds.
Both of the videos also contain a lot of Easter eggs. In the “Grey Veins” video, you have the “Ghost of You” combat helmet in there. Which Easter egg are you the most proud of?
[laughs] That video was really fun to make. It took a very long time. We made the city and a very talented young lady named Kelly Harris made the costumes. Coming up with the concept and the different vignettes that we could film to make this world feel believable was quite the undertaking. We filmed it in this old VFW hall and you would never know because it’s all in miniature. We were moving the little Lego pieces with string and trying to get them to seem like they were moving on their own. My Good Eye did such an amazing job. Me and Tucker were there for fucking 36 hours straight just moving shit and building shit. It was really, really awesome. It was really, really fun to make.
As far as Easter eggs, there’s so many! There’s the keytar from “Medicine Square Garden” which is the final summoning of the rock ‘n’ roll power that comes down and destroys Blobby. There’s a couple of my son’s toys that made it into the world of the Lego people. My dog tags that my wife and I made when we first started dating are in there. The “Ghost of You” helmet is in there. It’s one of those things where it started from this crazy idea of, “I wanna make a Japanese monster movie”. I’ve always wanted to do it and I’ve pitched that idea probably 30 times. [laughs] This was the first time where I was told, “Yeah, you can make that”. So it was pretty awesome.
You’ve mentioned that monster movies were a big part of you and your dad bonding when you were younger. What did it mean to you to have your kids involved in the video?
It’s awesome! I think they’re getting to the age now where they’re more interested in that stuff. Back in the day, I made a video with them for “Best Friends Forever” which was a song my daughters wrote and they were in the video. It was more like, “Hey, listen, I’m going to make a video for the song that we did” and they were like, “Ok” and I was like, “You’re going to be in it!” and they were like, “Ok”. [laughs] I don’t know if they were conscious of what was happening. This was more like they knew. In the video for “Benadryl” my daughter Cherry and my son Miles were in it. Lily is very studious so she told me, “Dude, I can’t not go to school that day. I have a test coming up. I have two Spanish tests coming up and I can’t miss it” so I was like, “Alright, I get it”. She turned me down but Cherry and Miles were more than happy to skip school to be in the video and eat ice cream all day. [laughs] I think Lily got 108 in four of her classes, in every class she’s in she has A+s. She got her sense of humour and her stomach from me and she gets all her smarts and good looks from her mom.
What do you feel like the connection between music and monster movies is?
For me, it’s just the two things that I grew up loving so much and both of the things that I connected with my dad about. I think early on if you were to ask me, “What do you wanna be when you grow up?” the first answer was always, “I wanna be in a band”. Then people would be like, “You probably won’t succeed in that, you need a real job. What else do you wanna do?” and I would say, “I wanna make monster movies!” That’s what I was always interested in. On the weekends, I would go hang out with my dad and we would bee-line it to Palmer Video and he would let me rent whatever I wanted so we’d have a stack of monster movies. Then I would go see his band play and watch monster movies all night. That’s how we spent our weekends. If we didn’t go to rent the movies then we would go to the library and get books on the movies. I actually have one of those now. There was a series of books that told the story of Frankenstein or any of the old Universal Monsters and had stills from the actual film in it. Books about monsters, movies about monsters, and then I’d go see his band play. It was rad! That’s how I grew up. I had little to no interest or aspirations for anything else. Maybe skateboarding later on but I broke my ankles doing that and I realized that wasn’t for me. [laughs] I couldn’t play guitar if I broke my wrists so I put that to the side, I would just mall grab, I think.
You gotta have priorities.
Yeah! That’s the thing. If you’re a handsome actor then you can’t get hit in the face. If you’re a musician like I am, a clumsy musician, then you can’t skate and play.
L.S. Dunes will be playing on the Sad Summer touring festival and will be playing headlining shows in the US and Canada starting in July. What are you looking forward to the most about these shows?
Oh man, if you think about it, this is kind of our first US headline tour after Sad Summer. We’ve done limited runs on the East Coast and the West Coast but this is the first time we’re actually getting to do a full loop. I’m looking forward to playing the record and playing new songs. I’m looking forward to playing with Pinkshift and Teen Mortgage and PONY. I’m just looking forward to hanging out with my friends and making music. Honestly, that’s what it’s all about for me.
The band recently put a Pride-themed poppy T-shirt up for pre-order with all of the proceeds going towards The Trevor Project. What does this organization mean to you?
I think they’re a great organization. I think they’re helping kids and they have their priorities straight. It’s always hard when picking charities and making sure they’re vetted and are doing the right thing. The Pride shirt is something I don’t want to take full credit for because that was really a passion project from Tucker. He kept saying, “I really wanna do this for Pride” and I thought it was a great idea. The design came out fantastic and if you can make something cool and help people then it’s a win-win. I’m really happy it all came together.
What are you listening to now?
I like that Sweet Pill record that just came out a lot. There’s a grindcore band from New Jersey called Come Mierda which is basically “eat shit” in Spanish who I think are fucking great. The new Gel record is fantastic! I like that band a lot. Militarie Gun has put out a new great record. The new MSPAINT is great too. I really like Teen Mortgage and I’m digging the new stuff by Pinkshift. There’s a band from Texas called Glare that I think is really, really cool. I’m always looking for new stuff!
I think sometimes we fall into this ditch of only listening to the same shit that we listened to when we were teenagers and I know a lot of people do that. I think it’s cool. There’s a comforting thing about that. I’ll never turn off a Nirvana record or a Smashing Pumpkins record and Bouncing Souls and Black Flag will always be on. But it’s nice to hear newer bands and to see what else is coming down the pipe. I really do enjoy finding new artists. I think it’s inspiring and there’s so much cool music out there.
Gotta keep up with it.
Much to my wife’s chagrin about my record collection. It keeps growing. [laughs] There’s a lot of really cool, really interesting underground newer black metal that’s going on that’s fucking amazing. I think Vide is amazing, Spectral Wound is doing great stuff. Sun’s Journey Through The Night is fantastic. There’s so many great bands. Lamp Of Murmuur is unreal.
Are you still involved in the punk scene in New Jersey?
I don’t know if I’m involved, no one’s coming to me like I’m on the board of anything. [laughs]I was actually doing a session on Sunday otherwise I would’ve been at the Emperor show in Brooklyn. I love going to shows. It’s hard sometimes when you tour as much as I do and when you’re in the studio and stuff like that, sometimes on your night off you just want to chill. t’s funny because when you’re on tour the first things you look around for are music stores, record shops, and shows in town if you have a night off. I’m always down to see something. I think the older I get I’m more at the bigger shows as opposed to the VFW halls and things of that nature. I’ve been lucky enough to catch bands like Incendiary at festivals that we’re playing which is awesome. I feel very fortunate to be able to catch bands like that but I’m always a big proponent of if you like a band you have to see them in their natural habitat and go see the show. I wish I was able to catch Drug Church the last time they were around here but schedules are fucked. Their new single is great.
What does the future hold for L.S. Dunes?
I have no idea! [laughs] It definitely holds new recordings and new music. It’s just a matter of finding time to do it and I can’t wait because I fucking love being in this band. It’s so much fun. It’s one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had. I’ll do this until the day I die. It’s so much fun.

Newish Comics
Batman: The Brave and the Bold #17: oh, we are recanonising Officer Down immediately before going into All Along the Watchtower? That's...a choice. Not necessarily a bad one, but hmmm it very much positions Harvey Bullock (though while recanonising it we've now made the hit go awry, so hmmmmm).
The Leap Day story was fine, it felt like a Batman fill. I don't care for the Constantine team up with Streaky but that's normal for me. Billy seemed sort of young in the diner story, but it was a cute team up (though Basil Karlo, you know there's a perfectly fine team name for Clayfaces, it's the Mud Pack, why were you reaching for 'The Clay Team').
The Man-Bat story made me emotional, especially in that Kirk says he's still very separated from Francine.
Action Comics #1069: These were...fine. I did have to laugh that Rowell's conclusion to 'is it unethical to report on yourself' was 'we're both somewhat unethical and are going to do it anyway'.
The Flash #13: This remains a very good Wally West comic. I did squint at Linda saying she went through labour three times, but I think this is meant in terms of the nonsense surrounding the twins' pregnancy involved her to first miscarry and then give birth to the twins. That or she's counting active labour/delivery for the twins separately.
I'm excited for Skartaris. I presume we're also time travelling somewhat given Travis appeared alive in the dream scene, but also I'm fully aware that nobody actually remembers Travis did actually die and Joshua's now the Warlord. Unless there's further developments beyond that that I haven't sussed out yet.
Green Arrow #16: I love your confidence in Connor, Ollie, but's he's still like...top 10 living fighters, not the 'greatest fighter the world has ever seen'. (I did enjoy the little smirk on Connor's face from his very first panels that was very 'you are underestimating me').
Also still so very bored with this extremely obvious triple cross. I presume we will finally get around to the payoff in Absolute Power #4. (Let Cissie and Sienna go home)
Outsiders #11: This has been an interesting comic. I'm still not sure how much of a difference it would have made to label this 'Planetary'. What I enjoyed was Kate and Luke getting some page time. I'm unconvinced that what we need is an Authority reboot centred around the Bats (I cringed at the "Lucius Fox to be the Doctor! Luke Fox to be the Engineer!" stuff) but I don't hate the idea of an Authority reboot, especially if they give it teeth. If you're doing the Authority can I have Jack Hawksmoor mentoring Cameron Kim instead thanks.
Zatanna: Bring Down the House #4: the art on this title remains super pretty. It's really an interesting rewrite of Zee's history
The Warlord #69: This week in the lost land of Skartaris, everyone is finally heading back to the present from Wizard World.
Of course, it goes wrong.

bahahahhahahahahaha oh Dan Jurgens you clearly didn't have any decent reference images
The best bit, beyond the incredibly tall buildings in the middle of the water of Circular Quay, or the surprise mountains coming out of the water around Kirribilli, or the fact that Blues Point Tower is apparently 3x taller than it actually is (while still being an eyesore) is that Travis and Shakira have ended up in a future where, to my eye, Fort Denison was never constructed on Pinchgut Island.
This means nothing to anyone not heavily steeped in history of the settlement of Sydney but just trust me that it is very VERY funny in terms of what it means that Travis is just lying there on the rocks.

That's because even in this weird badly photoreferenced Sydney, Shakira, you are currently on what's essentially one of the most desolate rock islands in the centre of the harbour and from that sun it looks like if the fort was actually still there it would be closed for the day.
You might get to see Benny the seal though.
They then proceed to walk on water to get to the city, because even if this WAS on the north shore of the harbour they clearly aren't walking to Chatswood.
Travis finds the city to be incredibly empty and wonders if the Cold War suddenly got hot in his absence. But then! Travis gets jumped by some of Abe Saffron's boys and girls in a deeply amusing conglomeration of 80s fashion and space age dressing. So glad to see recognition of Sydney's underworld in an American comic. (They don't specify they're working for old Abe but you know. I can read into these things)
So they proceed to walk south in Australia heading for Melbourne so they can fly or sail to Antarctica and the hole to enter the centre of the earth. It's racist in places and has a farm that's raising wombats and I cannot take any of it seriously, but I am so amused.
