In all of the books I’ve read that have the main character liking someone unattainable, the character I’ve resonated most with is Lara Jean like Josh 1. Respects women 2. Likes to read 3. summary: you like josh, a lot, but don’t want to jeopardize your friendship with both him & lara jean

“So, are you going to tell me who you got for secret Santa?” Lara Jean smiles at you, in hopes to finally crack the secret you had been keeping for weeks.

“Lara Jean!” You exclaim with a laugh, “it’s secret Santa for a reason.”

Josh walked up behind you and Lara Jean, raising an arm to wrap around you. “She’s gotta point, Lara Jean.”

She frowns, “you’re both no fun. I told you mine.”

“You chose to tell us,” you say.

Josh raises his eyebrows, nodding in agreement, with that same smile on his face.

That smile...

“See you ladies later,” Josh calls out, walking backwards with a wave before turning down a hallway to his class. Your eyes linger, for a moment longer than you realize, because you feel Lara Jean nudge you with her elbow.

She smirks, “you weren’t staring at Josh, were you?”

“What—no,” you feel your face start to heat up, feeling your heart start to pick up pace.

“You’d be cute together,” she shrugs, ponytail swishing behind her as she walks into her next class.

Lara Jean’s words replayed throughout your head all afternoon.

“You’d be cute together.”

You had met Josh through Lara Jean, quickly warming up to him. He was sweet, almost overly so. Doing nice things for you, unprompted, that flustered you. His smile full of sunshine as he looked at you.

It didn’t take long for a crush to form, but you never said anything - for Lara Jean’s sake, but also because he had broken up with his long-time girlfriend Margot only a year ago. It had to be too soon for him.

Lara Jean has offered you a ride to the party held at Christine’s house. Hence, Peter picked you up. Christmas music blared through the car, laughter following as Peter sang-along, yelling the lyrics as loud as he could.

You three were the last to arrive, everyone else already gathered in the living room.

“About time,” Christine gushed, “we can finally get to the part we all came for - presents!”

The present you held in your hands was given to Lara Jean, the shock on her face evident.

“Now you know why I couldn’t tell you!”

She smiled, “I love it.”

Peter had gotten you, handing a bag that had a book you’d been wanting to read forever. “Lara Jean helped me out...”

You grinned, thanking them both.

The party went on and everyone mingled, everyone but Josh you noticed.

He had slipped away.

You excused yourself from the conversation you held with Lucas and wandered down the hall. It was lined with Christmas lights and garland, red bows in between each droop. Your eyes were transfixed on the decorations, you hardly noticed the figure sitting outside.

He glances behind him when you open the patio doors, smiling softly.

“Hey.”

“Hey.”

You wrap your arms around yourself, “it’s freezing out here.”

“Yeah, it is.” He answers, almost absentmindedly.

“Why are you out here?” He doesn’t respond, so you walk over closer to him.

“I was hoping that I would get you for secret Santa,” Josh confesses, after you sit down next to him on the patio steps. His arms fold over his knees. You don’t look over at him, but you feel his gaze on you.

“Why?” You ask, shifting slightly to face him better.

“I thought,” he pulled out a wrapped present, it was red wrapping paper with a bold glittery gold bow on top. It wasn’t perfectly wrapped, but the care that been put into it was obvious. “That it would be less awkward to give you a present that way, but then I thought ‘screw it’ and here we are.”

He hands the present to you, fingers trailing over yours slowly before dropping to rest in his lap again.

You take a moment to admire the wrapping once more, finger trailing over the lines and contours. His eyes are trained solely on you. It makes you nervous. Being in this close proximity with him and yet, it’s thrilling. Finally you begin to carefully tear away the wrapping, hands glossing over the smooth cover of a box.

“Open it,” his voice is hushed, nervous as he leans in.

It’s a simple necklace, a circle with your initial hanging delicately from it.

“Do you like it?”

“I love it.” Your voice is hushed, in awe of the delicate pendant.

His smile is full of sunshine then, and you feel yourself warm at the sight, “I’m glad.”

“You didn’t have to get me a present...”

“I wanted to,” he reassures you. “Here, let me help you put it on.”

His fingers are cold against your neck, a shiver running down your spine. You look down at the shining jewelry, a blush running up your cheeks.

“It’s beautiful, Josh, really.” You smile at him.

“You’re more beautiful,” his smile hasn’t gone away, but it’s softer now full of something you can’t quite believe...

“Thank you,” you look away, not knowing how to respond.

“I’ve always thought you were beautiful,” he continues, “from the day Lara Jean introduced us to now. I really like you.”

You turn to face him, disbelief spelled across your features. He smiles, albeit nervously, and grabs your hand.

“Would you go on a date with me?

“I’d love to,” you grin, laughing when he brings you in for a hug.

“How does right now sound?”

“Now?”

“Yeah, we can sneak out and no one will notice.”

Despite your hesitation, you do. You leave with Josh, creeping out the back yard and to his car, completely unaware of the eyes peeping from behind the living room curtains.

“I told you he would ask her out.”

“Pay up.”

“I can’t believe you guys bet on this.”

Josh is Margot’s boyfriend, but I guess you could say my whole family is a little in love with him. It’s hard to say who most of all. Before he was Margot’s boyfriend, he was just Josh. He was always there. I say always, but I guess that’s not true. He moved next door five years ago but it feels like always.
