Information on some of my favorite Girlsies !!! For sillies !!!

(working title was me infodumping about girlsies under the excuse that it is relevent to the event)

I don't have the energy to go through & update this post at the moment, but @thegroundsofbrooklyn has a post here that has more info on the UK Brooklyn Girls !!!

Starting out with our number one, the original girlsie: Charlie (Hard Promises) !!!

Charlie was the original love interest for Jack in Hard Promises, and she was a newsie !! Her story was that she was living in a house of prostitution with her aunt (with her aunt trying to shield her from as much as possible to stop her from going into that life / being exposed to it) and she was planning to (and did!) go with Jack to Santa Fe at the end.

I know that whether or not Smalls is a girl is up to interpretation but I am interpreting her as a girl & including her in this list (same with Sniper).

Smalls is a Bronx newsie (as implied by her yelling so's da Bronx during Brooklyn's Here), but she's still allowed in Manhattan (hence being there for KoNY in some versions), so she's probably allowed to wander around on her own.

According to Liana Hunt, she lives in a family with at least one parent and a ton of brothers who all work to support them, so she's sort've eager to be one of the boys in that sense — she's also super tough.

Talls !!! (Broadway) (Manhattan / Possibly The Bronx):

Talls was Caitlyn Caughell's newsie whenever she was on for that track. I have no information on her besides the fact that she was played by Caitlyn Caughell & is probably a play on her height of some kind — + also being a play on Smalls. Smalls & Talls <3

Sniper !!! (Tour) (Manhattan / Possibly The Bronx):

I'm going to be mixing in other backstories for this because as far as I'm aware Sniper's the only newsie on that list with a backstory that isn't from their actress ? + she has more involvement in the show when she isn't a girl so I'm going off that

But according to Alex Wong — Sniper's last name is Wah, and she's the daughter (son in this backstory but it's okay) of Sam Wah, who owns the laundromat above Jacobi's (the sign of which can be seen in the pre-uksies Jacobi scenes). She's named after her 'incredible aim' with a slingshot.

In certain versions, she's one of the scabs, the last one to throw down her papers, and the one to go 'Ah, what the hell? My father's gonna kill me anyway!' in the proshot. In the tour, she was also the one to yell so's da bronx.

Puddles !!! (Tour) (Manhattan / Possibly The Bronx):

Puddles is in the same group as Talls in the sense that there is like no canon lore about her & there isn't even any information besides her name and the fact that she was played by Melissa Steadman Hart during the tour. However she has the cutest nickname and deserved to be included in this list.

Marriott! Buttons !!! (Marriott) (Manhattan):

According to Adrienne Storrs, the actress for Buttons, she's been a newsie for three years. Her parents are poor Italian immigrants that don't speak English, so she works to support them. She was convinced to start selling Newspapers by JoJo after being caught pickpocketing on the street.

Buttons & JoJo are best gal pals, she sees Specs as a younger brother figure (she's always looking out for him), and Race and Albert are her favorite people to joke around with!

She has (had?) a rich boyfriend that went to jail for forgery a bit before the strike, so she's a little heartbroken during it, but she's 'continuing to live her life and she has the best newsie friends'.

She has a really positive mindset in general.

She also (along with JoJo) checked Katherine out when she walked into Jacobi's and later taught her how to Irish dance during KoNY with JoJo !!!

Marriott! JoJo !!! (Marriott) (Manhattan):

According, once again, to Adrienne Storrs, JoJo (who's real name is Josephine) is 'one tough cookie'. She was originally a pickpocket, but Jack found her and took her under her wing for ten percent of her earnings when she was almost twelve. She was one of the original newsies in the Manhattan group, and after three years she started seeking out other girl newsies (& that's when Buttons came along !!). She's been a newsie for about five years, 'not too far behind how long Jack had been selling'.

She has an Irish father and a Romanian mother and they were circus artists that came to America with P.T Barnum in the 1870s. She was born in 1882 (making her seventeen at the time of the strike) and she was raised around a circus.

Rafaela (Marriott) (Brooklyn):

Once again, according to Adrienne Storrs, Rafaela's parents moved from Spain to Puerto Rico in the 1880s and she was born there in 1885. They moved to New York City when she was five and she's very close with her brothers, who were six and eight at the time. All three children became newsies at the same time, being expected to work as much as their parents did.

She didn't go to school, she taught herself how to read and speak English, using her time as a newsie as a teaching device. She's super tough, and she had to grow up really fast. She 'has a strong sense of community with her family and fellow Brooklyn Newsies'.

Joey (Marriott) (Brooklyn):

You guessed it, information yet again from Adrienne Storrs!

Joey is Racetrack Higgins' cousin, and she's super positive. She's also secretly a really good fighter.

Hildy (Marriott) (Brooklyn):

You'll never guess where this info is from.

Hildy is German, and her parents own a sausage shop, and she likes to get into trouble.

Honorable mention to Nancy, Hazel, and Muriel from Newsies Jr.

I don't have the energy to read through all of newsies jr rn to find out which lines they have, however I can tell you off the top of my head that they are very supportive of Katherine and probably also on the younger side (because. Newsies Jr. Obviously).

Spot Conlon (UK) (Brooklyn):

Using Lillie-Pearl's backstory for Spot here, because Clarice never got the opportunity to share hers if she had one :(

Lillie-Pearl's backstory for Spot is that her parents were Irish and African American immigrants living in Seneca Village.

Spot in Uksies is very close with Davey !!! According to Lillie-Pearl, she doesn't call him Davey, she calls him David, and in her cameo description she added 'making rhymes with Davey' into her list of things she enjoyed. She is also very close with her girls (obviously), specifically Lucky & Stray, who she did the handshake with depending on what point in the show it was. She also liked Race, depending on the day.

(She also probably isn't on awful terms with most of the Manhattan newsies, especially if they're girls.)

Lucky (Newsies UK) (Brooklyn):

Lucky doesn't have a lot of canon lore too her HOWEVER I can tell you that she used to do the handshake with Spot back when she existed, was called Tops for some performances, AND her real name is Eliza !!! She also interacted with Scope a lot during The Rally.

Mack (Newsies UK) (Brooklyn):

Mack's real name is Jeanie MacDonald, but she shortened it down to Mack because she didn't like her name.

She's a Scottish immigrant whose family moved to the U.S (just North of New York) to start a farm, but a plague of locusts destroyed the farm, so they had to move into the city for work.

She couldn't stand being stuck in their one bedroom cramped apartment, so her father suggested that she take up work as a Newsie.

Splint (Newsies UK) (Brooklyn):

Splint's arm is in a Splint !!! For some mystery reason that definitely isn't because Bobbie's hand was injured at the time of the first preview. Definitely not.

She doesn't appear after The Rally, which is because — according to Bobbie — she falled down & died :( (Bobbie needed 2 be there as Hannah)

Also her real name is Splinty McSplint.

(Bobbie also said that if she were to have a love interest it would be Buttons.)

Scope (Newsies UK) (Brooklyn):

I have no canon info about Scope besides the fact that she has the world's cutest pigtails and hung around Lucky at The Rally a lot :(

Ritz (Newsies UK) (Brooklyn):

Ritz' real name is Rita, and her nickname comes from ritz crackers and also Lucy's last characters name !! That's all the canon info we have on her as far as ik :(

Stray (Newsies UK) (Brooklyn):

Stray's nickname comes from her feeding all of the stray animals of New York !!!

She is related to Specs in some way (probably siblings, considering the fact that Sam & Immie are).

She becomes a Bowery Beauty when she's older, and her real name is from a newsgirl turned dancer but Immie doesn't remember who that is — the closest I got in my research is Lillian Russell, who wasn't a newsgirl but yk close enough.

**Character Expo**

I've been playing DAI since it came out in 2014. I can't even begin to recall the number of complete playthroughs I've made. There have been A LOT!! I had a huge folder of save files and screenshots, but lost it in a HDD failure. Luckily I had some of my faves backed up on a separate drive. I thought I'd post some of those Inquisitors here:

Uriah Lavellan - modded Elven Circle Mage playthru - not Dalish - born in Kirkwall Alienage, magic manifested at age 6, sent to the Gallows, transferred to the Ostwick Circle as an apprentice - lived there until the circles disbanded. Believes he is the Herald of Andraste. Rode the Bull. Took the power from the Well of Sorrows.

Assan Lavellan - Archer Tempest - Romanced Cassandra, convinced her to rebuild the Seekers. Leliana became Divine Victoria.

Kataar Adaar - Pyromancer and Knight Enchanter, doesn't believe in Gods - though he helped Cassandra become the Divine because he believed in her. My all time fave DAI character. He's my canon Inquisitor.

Ash Adaar - Warrior Reaver - romanced Cassandra, Celene rules Orlais with Briala (reconciled them).

Asharaas Adaar - Warrior Reaver - fell for Dorian. Also doesn't believe in Gods. Never claimed to be the Herald. Gaspard is Emperor, but Briala is the power behind the throne.

Ashkost Adaar - Warrior Champion - fell for Josephine's gentle grace and dueled Lord Otranto for her hand. (I love that duel) Chose the Templars over the Mages and made Vivienne the Divine.

Kathas Adaar - (I used a mod that gave him multiplayer Saarebas magic in sp so he had some really cool magic, unfortunately it would crash if you tried to enter Redcliffe/Hushed Whispers quest so that meant he had to do Champions of the Just, the Templar quest. I like it, though, because of Ser Barris. And Calpernia.) He did disband the Templar order and had them join the Inquisition as free allies, though. And through the Choose Your Divine mod, Leliana became Divine. Kathas romanced Dorian, and punched Solas. At the end of Trespasser, he told Solas he would stop him.

Verush Adaar - Warrior Reaver - romanced Cassandra, let Celene die and made Gaspard emperor of Orlais, exiled the Grey Wardens (cus Cassandra said to send them away), Left Blackwall in jail when the truth of who he was and what he did came out, allied with the templars, Cassandra became Divine.

Sataareth Adaar - Rogue Assassin - romanced Dorian. Very minimal in recruiting, said No to Bull (because Ben-Hassrath) and Vivienne(due to her views on magic) Also did not recruit Blackwall. Doesn’t like Solas. Doesn’t believe in Gods or religion. Freed the mages at Redcliffe. Chose Gaspard as sole Emperor of Orlais. Leliana will be Divine.

Azure Adaar - Mage, didn’t specialize (due to an Unlock Specs mod.. he used them all) Romanced Josephine. Vivienne made Divine

Akasha Adaar - Archer Assassin - never finished her playthrough, she made it to Skyhold, was romancing Blackwall, made it through Wicked Eyes, Wicked Hearts and then I got bored so I created a new character and never went back to her. Don't have the save files any more.

Alexander Trevelyan - Archer Tempest - Dorian romance, made Celene, Gaspard and Briala work together for the betterment of the Empire, freed the mages, allied with the Wardens, Leliana is Divine.

Jace, Jacoby and Vaughn Trevelyan - Warrior, Rogue, Mage, romances were Josephine, Cassandra and Cullen (used the Bi Cullen mod). IIRC, Jace went the Templar route while Jacoby and Vaughn went the mage route. The mages were freed, and Templar order became allies of the Inquisition. Ser Barris became Knight-Commander. The Grey Wardens also became allies of the Inquisition. In 2 of those pt's, Leliana became Divine and the other was Cassandra. In all 3, Celene, Gaspard and Briala were made to work together.

Kesh Cadash - she's one of 2 dwarves I've ever played. Never played a male dwarf in Inquisition and probably never will. LOL Kesh - she's a little cutie - Dual Daggers/Assassin - romanced Blackwall - tried to convince him that even those that have lived a life of crime can better themselves (after all she did, given her background with the Carta), she reconciled Celene and Briala, allied with the Templars, and allied with the Grey Wardens. She made Vivienne Divine.

Orana - This was a head-canon playthru. Orana was not from the Dalish or from Clan Lavellan. She was an npc plucked straight from Dragon Age 2. Orana is the elven slave Hawke can save while helping Fenris track down Magister Hadriana during Act 2. My head-canon for this one was that Hawke sent her to the Divine Conclave at the Temple of Sacred Ashes in his stead as his spy. And she ends up with the mark on her hand. I wrote a good bit of a short fanfic about her becoming the Herald of Andraste. So in the image of her that I posted, Varric is giving her the side-eye because he knows who she is and he's waiting until Cassandra is out of earshot to ask her why Hawke thought sending her here was a good idea.

Estelle Trevelyan- My head-canon for her is that she sought something more for herself than joining the Chantry as many in her family had. She asked to be allowed study at the University of Orlais, but that was denied to her. So she ran away and ended up joining the Qun, becoming one of the many viddithari. Her Besrathari (trainer) was called Meerad, and by the time her training ended, he named her Asaara. Despite the fact that she had left her noble family behind, she headed to the Conclave as Estelle Trevelyan in order to gather information. What she wasn't expecting was to end up with a magical mark on her hand and everyone calling her the "Herald of Andraste."

Mirisa Lavellan - My head-canon for her is that her mother was Dalish, but left the clan and dallied for a time with a city born elf. Mirisa's mother returned to the clan a few years later with Mirisa in tow. Soon after returning to Clan Lavellan, her mother passed away and Mirisa found herself in the care of her aunt. Her upbringing was rough because she never felt like she belonged. Despite this, she became one of the best hunters the clan had. She volunteered to go to the shem Conclave instead of them sending their first.

LUST MOUNTAIN TREE RAKSURA:

Brief background story:

In the process of moving to a different mountain-tree, due to a horrible fire decimating the last one, a Fell flight took advantage and attacked. Many of their warriors were killed/injured in the resulting fight. In the confusion two of their clutched sister queens and some arbora were stolen. After the grief and trauma of these series of unfortunate events, the entire court suffers from a difficulty to clutch, with still-birth being common.

In 1761, the women of Tenco defended their town. One of them, Josephine Jacobi armed herself and joined the fray. Other women imitated her and fought. Animated by their example, the defenders repelled the besiegers.

Several women fought at the battle of Borgo in 1769 on the side of the Corsican patriot and military leader Pasquale Paoli. Magistrate and memorialist Salvatore Viale described them as armed with rifle and knife, sharing the perils of war with their husbands.

Among them was Rosanna Franschetti-Serpentini who fought alongside her husband, an officer. She was dressed in male attire and “always well armed”. She was nicknamed “the heroine” or “our captain”. Rosanna notably defeated a French officer in hand-to-hand combat (since French troops had landed in Corsica after Genoa sold the island to France). When she saw that her side had to retreat, she freed her captive and said: “Remember that a Corsican woman overcame you and gave you back your sword and freedom”.

Boy Meets World Masterlist

“Albie? Honey, you have to come out eventually,” JoJo insisted, standing just beyond the door to Albert’s bathroom.

Race was leaning against the wall beside her, a smirk on his face as he knew nothing good would stem from this. Albert was a good writer and a good journalist, but this story was bound to be something else.

“Don’t wanna! Second thoughts!” Albert shot back.

His best friend snorted.

JoJo glared at him. “Come on, babe, we won’t laugh,” she promised.

“You’re not seein’ what I’m seein’!” Albert sounded upset. But Race could only laugh.

JoJo gestured for him to say something. So he pushed himself from the wall and sighed, knocking on the door. “Come on, buddy, you’re gonna write an article that means somethin’!” he encouraged, trying his best to be light even though he knew something was bound to go wrong. “You’re gonna make a difference in the lives of guys n’ girls everywhere!”

“You’re not seein’ what I’m seein’!”

Rolling his eyes, Race tried again. “Come on, Al. How bad a girl can you be?”

Finally, the door clicked open. And Albert walked out. Race tried his best to keep a straight face, but the ridiculousness of his best friend outweighed the blond boy’s want to spare his feelings.

Albert was dressed in a short, purple button up dress that was about two sizes too small for him, a stuffed bra and a pair of big, white high heels. His red wig barely covered his head and the red nail polish he wore was sloppy and uncalculated as was the bright red lipstick he wore. Race couldn’t help but laugh.

JoJo was covering her lips, hiding her own amused smile.

“How bad?” Albert asked.

“Bad, bad,” Race stated, looking the other boy up and down.

“I knew it…” Albert shifted on his feet, looking down and taking an insecure breath. “I… I look fat…” he said, clearly upset.

Still, all Race could do was laugh. “Fat is the least a’ your problems, babe.”

Glaring at his best friend, Albert turned to his girl. “Jo?” he asked, gesturing to his wig and makeup.

His girl crossed her arms over her chest and shrugged, trying not to be quite as mean about it. “Maybe it’s just not a good color for you?” She didn’t know what else she could say. If she was being honest, it was a little funny.

Looking between the two most important people in his life, Albert shifted uncomfortably before trying to go back and hide in the bathroom.

But his girl and his best friend grabbed his arms. “No no no, come on, baby, you can do this,” JoJo encouraged turning the boy back around. “It’s just all about how you present yourself!” She brushed her perfect curls behind her, gesturing out to the room. “Go on, Albie, present yourself.”

With a big breath, the boy faked a smile and tried to walk like he thought any normal girl would.

Race had to bite his lip to keep from bursting out with laughter.

When Albert returned to them, he looked at both of them. “Was that alright?”

Straight faced and straight toned, all Race could reply was, “Not even on a desert Island.” JoJo glared at him again so Race sighed. “Look, Al, you're missin’ the obvious! Girls glide more n’ that. They’re more at ease. Ya gotta let it flow,” he instructed, trying his best to help, knowing that this article was important.

He knew it was important.

“That’s pretty on the nose, Racer,” JoJo replied with a mischievous glint in her eye. “Why don’t you uh… show Albert how it’s done.”

Never one to back from a challenge, Race scoffed and walked across the room daintily. It was subtle and calm and just right. But when he got back, he saw the look in their eyes. “What?” All they had to do was smile at him before he was shaking his head. “Oh no… no no no no no no no…”

Race poked his head out and looked around the corner of their usual hallway, clad up in a blond wig and a perfectly well done makeup job, courtesy of one miss Josephine Jorgette De La Guerra. Bangs fell down in his face and curls fell around his neck. It was irritating.

His best friend pushed him out into the hallway with ease. Race gaped back at him, reaching to adjust the pencil skirt that JoJo insisted he wear. It was scary how well it fit him.

He could practically feel the eyes on him. “Why are they all lookin’ at me?” he hissed at his best friend who wrapped an arm around his shoulders.

“Tony, I don’t want ya ta take this the wrong way, but… you’re kind of a babe,” he admitted.

Race smiled and shrugged shyly. “Really?”

“Yeah…” Albert laughed. “Ya want me ta carry your books for you?”

“I get that?! Yeah!” the other boy replied eagerly, handing his friend his books that didn’t fit in the purse that JoJo said most girls used instead of backpacks because it looked more feminine.

Together they walked to their lockers, Race almost tripping. The boots he wore covered most of his legs, only cutting off towards the knee. The black tights did the rest. “Why are you carrying his books?” JoJo asked, turning from her locker.

“Well, we’re tryin’ ta create the illusion that Racer’s a girl… I thought this would help,” Albert explained.

Crossing her arms over her chest, JoJo looked up at him. “You never offer ta carry my books…” Albert stuttered before turning and handing Race’s books back to him, not answering his girlfriend. So JoJo just shook her head, focusing her attention on her best friend. “So, Tony, how does it feel ta be wearin’ tights?”

“Not Tony,” the boy corrected.

“Oh, he’s right. He needs a girl’s name.” JoJo turned to Albert for help.

The redhead nodded. “Okay, this is easy… how about Janet?”

Race shook his head. “No no no, not Janet,” he stuttered out, a bit shy and self conscious still. He shouldn’t be walking around like this. He didn’t want anyone to figure it out.

“What possible difference could it make—?”

“Hey, Albie!” JoJo cut him off, studying her friend. A smile spread on her face. “You’ve thought about this, haven’t you?” she asked the boy.

Race slowly shrugged, not meeting his friend’s eyes. “A little…”

“And what name have you thought about?”

The blond paused, looking around, already afraid of being judged. “Um… R-Ramona…” he responded.

JoJo grinned. “I love it.” She elbowed Albert in the guy before he could say anything else, knowing Race was already insecure.

Just as Race might’ve said more, a couple of teachers came rounding the corner from the cafeteria. Kloppman at the head of them, talking with Jacobs and Jack walking with Plumber behind them.

Three of them walked past without a word.

“Mornin’, guys,” Jack greeted with a smile, caught up in whatever conversation he was having with his girlfriend.

Race ducked his head down with a smile.

Jack went to keep going, but paused after what he’d seen registered in his mind. He froze in his stride, taking in a deep sigh and biting his lip before turning to Katherine. “Excuse me, Love?” She just nodded, squeezing his hand before continuing on down the hall, catching up with David. Then he spun back around and walked back over to the child he knew so well. Race didn’t look up at him, thinking maybe he’d leave. But Jack just stayed, shoving his hands in his pockets and offering the kid a tight smile. “Ya know… Racer… if ya need ta talk about anythin’, ya know where ta find me,” he tried, almost joking, not quite sure what to say.

Race managed a smile. “It’s for an article, Jack. It’s just for an article…” he insisted.

“Hey, hey, I ain’t here ta judge, dollface,” Jack countered, unsure of what else he could say. He could hear Albert laughing at the nickname. Race was clearly embarrassed. “Just… just know that I’m here, alright?”

“It’s just for an article!” Race hissed again.

Jack put up his hands in surrender. “Okay, sweetheart… Whateva’ you say.” With a playful punch at Race’s chin, the man was off down the hall.

Race rolled his eyes, turning back to his friends and seeing them snickering behind him.

But something else caught Albert’s attention. “Okay, okay! Target approaching,” he whispered. Race looked up to see Gerard walking down the stairs.

JoJo caught his attention. “Hey! Gerard, Dev said you two went out on Saturday,” she said, trying to make conversation.

Gerard walked to her, but his gaze trailed over to Racer who shyly averted his gaze to the ground. “Uh… yeah… we did… hey,” he greeted, clearly not interesting in a conversation and clearly more interested in letting his eyes linger over Race’s body. Race did not appreciate it. “I’m Gerard…”

“Gerard, this is Ramona,” Albert introduced immediately, a big goofy grin on his face.

“Ramona…” the taller, much bigger boy repeated. “I’ve never seen you around here. Are you new in school?”

Race forced himself to smile and nod. “Yeah… yeah, it’s like I’m a whole new person,” he replied. He didn’t have to change his voice much, knowing it was already slightly high pitched. But he spoke quietly, trying to hide the nerves.

This all felt slightly familiar.

“Well, uh… listen… if you want, I could take you to Jacobi’s and tell you what teachers to avoid… that kind of thing…”

Race glanced back at his friends. JoJo seemed to sense his anxiety but Albert just kept on grinning, nodding his head. “Um… yeah… yeah, that sounds nice…”

“Well… I’ll see you then…”

With that the boy walked away. And Race turned back to his friends. Albert wrapped an arm around his shoulder. “Way ta go, Racer!” he grinned. “Ya got the date!”

But Race still looked uncomfortable. “What is it?” JoJo asked.

Race just shook his head. “I… I got nothin’ ta wear…” he replied, turning back to his locker.

Albert snorted.

But Race bit his lip as he dug around in his locker.

He could do this.

“I can’t walk home like this…”

“Oh c’mon, Race, ya look fantastic!” Albert joked, sitting on his own bed with his arms wrapped around his girl.

“Al, I’m serious!” Race yelled, getting a little more worked up than he should’ve. “I need an extra set of clothes!”

“Alright! Alright!” Albert laughed, standing to his feet and searching for some clothes that his friend could wear. He wanted to get the makeup off of his face. He wanted to get a pair of pants back on and then he wanted to crawl in a whole and never be heard from again.

Albert handed him some sweats and pinched his cheek before going back to sit with JoJo.

Race tried to smile at them as he went back into Albert’s bathroom to change.

He ripped the wig off of his head the second the door was shut and let it fall to the ground as tears filled up in his eyes. He turned the sink on and cupped his hands under the faucet splashing the water on his face. When he looked up, the makeup was still there, only starting to run down his face.

That’s when he began to scrub at his face a bit more violently, holding back the sobs by swallowing hard. He didn’t dare look at himself again until he was sure it was all off. His eyes stung a bit as some mascara surely ran down into them. He looked up to find his own face again. He ripped the dress he wore off of him.

He was supposed to be happy. They’d gotten a good article.

But he never wanted to talk to another guy ever again.

He just wanted to hide somewhere for a while.

He didn’t want to go home.

But he didn’t have a choice.

He never had a choice.

HERE ALL ALONE is a total installation of sound and video art by Swedish artist Anders Weberg. It takes up the entire 2000m2 area of ‘the white factory’ at Nørrebro, what used to be an enzymes factory but is now closed down. The installation unfolds through large-scale audio and sound installations, and other visible and invisible installations involving surveillance cameras, push notifications and “old” media devices. Walking through the factory, the audience will experience various intuitive, embodied encounters with the installations that mirror how we engage with the world in a mediated reality increasingly conditioned by surveillance, feedback from invisible computing and overlays of virtual realities. The ambient installation of sound and video art in the white factory at Nørrebro finds its grounding in a current condition: A time of growing alienation, social exclusion, insecurity and rising fear of anyone other. A reality in which recent violent events have enhanced the actuality of a fear-focused world. We find ourselves here, in the abandoned enzymes factory, confronted with the feeling of being in an emotionally desolated world — all alone. Inside the factory, a fragment of the city is transitioned from the world of the concrete, productive and real into the realm of the fictional. The artist Anders Weberg invites us to explore the factory through various aesthetic entry points that confront the dystopian consequences of a fear-focused reality. He takes us behind the material surface of the factory and underneath an emotional skin of our cultural condition. Here, we are confronted with anxiety, fear and alienation, however not without hope that these emotional conditions can be cured. The aura of a factory once producing medicine for curing us physically and psychically mirrors a potentially curative emotional response to our uncanny status quo, which we are invited to explore while immersed in the responsive audiovisual installations. The exhibition raises the overall question: How do we deal with being actors in a culture of decaying trust and increasing alienation? Terry Hands, Director Known for Hits and ‘Carrie,’ Dies at 79

Terry Hands, a British director who led the Royal Shakespeare Company in England and in the 1980s took several productions to Broadway, including a well-regarded “Much Ado About Nothing” and the notorious musical flop “Carrie,” died on Tuesday. He was 79.

Theatr Clwyd in Wales, where he was artistic director for 18 years, retiring after directing a final ��Hamlet” in 2015, posted news of his death. The location and cause were not given.

Mr. Hands was with the Royal Shakespeare Company for almost a quarter-century, joining it in 1966 to run Theatregoround, an outreach program. In 1978 he became joint artistic director with Trevor Nunn, and from 1986 until his departure in 1990 he was the company’s chief executive.

One highlight of his tenure there was his work with the actor Alan Howard, whom he directed in an ambitious staging of Shakespeare’s “Henry IV, Part 1,” “Henry IV, Part 2” and “Henry V” at Stratford-upon-Avon in 1975, with Mr. Howard starting out as Prince Hal in the first play in the cycle and growing into the title character in “Henry V.”

Another noteworthy pairing came in the 1980s, when Mr. Hands directed Edmond Rostand’s “Cyrano de Bergerac” and Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing.” Derek Jacobi and Sinead Cusack starred in both, as Cyrano and Roxane in the first and as Benedick and Beatrice in the second. Mr. Hands moved both productions to Broadway in 1984, running them in repertory.

“A few wrong notes and ‘Cyrano de Bergerac’ could become this year’s Mel Brooks parody,” Frank Rich wrote in his review in The New York Times. “But Mr. Hands has perfect pitch. This director’s virtuosity is as impressive as his star’s.”

As for “Much Ado,” Mr. Rich called it “an iridescent reverie, as delicate as the wind chimes that shimmer in Nigel Hess’s exceptionally beautiful score.”

“Cyrano” earned three Tony Award nominations and “Much Ado” seven, with Mr. Jacobi’s Benedick winning him the best-actor prize. Mr. Hands was nominated for best director for that production, and his lighting design for each production — he often did his own — was also nominated.

“Doing this in America is obviously a gamble,” he told The Times in 1984 when the two plays were about to open. “Pleasing people in New York is not easy, and Broadway is a sudden-death street.”

He received confirmation of that in the most brutal of ways in 1988, when his production of “Carrie,” a musical based on Stephen King’s horror novel about a high school girl with telekinetic power, traveled to Broadway.

With music by Michael Gore, lyrics by Dean Pitchford and a book by Lawrence D. Cohen, the show had had a rocky start at Stratford-upon-Avon, but Mr. Hands, who directed, took it to New York anyway. Critics were unkind, to say the least. Mr. Rich, singling out a scene involving the slaughter of a pig, invoked another famous Broadway flop.

“Only the absence of antlers separates the pig murders of ‘Carrie’ from the ‘Moose Murders’ of Broadway lore,” he wrote in his review.

“Carrie” closed three days after it opened and has been something of a theatrical reference point — and not in a good way — ever since. Mr. Hands, though, who during his Royal Shakespeare tenure had pushed to expand that company beyond its comfort zone, had known that failure was a possibility and had embraced the challenge.

“You can’t deny that any show that begins with menstruation in the high school shower and ends with a double murder is obviously taking a risk,” he told The Times a few months earlier. “But that’s the attraction, too.”

Terence David Hands was born on Jan. 9, 1941, in Aldershot, England, southwest of London, to Joseph and Luise (Kohler) Hands. He attended the University of Birmingham and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 1964 and becoming a founder of the Everyman Theater in Liverpool.

His time at the Royal Shakespeare Company was punctuated by battles over public financing that ultimately wore him down.

“I’m haunted by the specter of endless revivals of ‘Peter Pan’ to pay for endless revivals of ‘Peter Pan,’” he told The Associated Press in 1990 shortly before he left, referring to the J.M. Barrie play that has been a Christmas perennial.

He expressed the hope that his successor would escape the burden of “having to spend three-quarters of the day raising, saving or making money.”

After leaving the Royal Shakespeare he worked as a freelance director until 1997, when he responded to a call from Theatr Clwyd, in northeastern Wales, which was on the verge of closing. He became its artistic director, bringing some stability to the finances and building a supportive audience.

“He saved the theater from closure — this is actual truth, not hyperbole — and protected it from ongoing public funding cuts,” Tamara Harvey, the theater’s current artistic director, said in a statement.

Mr. Hands’s marriages to Josephine Barstow in the 1960s and Ludmila Mikaël in the 1970s ended in divorce. In 2002 he married Emma Lucia, a director, who survives him, along with a daughter from his second marriage, the actress Marina Hands; and two sons, Sebastian and Rupert, from a relationship with Julia Lintott.

In 2015, as he was directing his final production for Theatr Clwyd, The Daily Post of North Wales asked him to name the highlights of his tenure there.

“Maybe one highlight is last year we played to over 200,000 people,” he said, “which, for a small theater up a hill surrounded by sheep, is an achievement.”

Jean Martin Ely (age 84) of Owensville, Missouri passed away Sunday, April 15, 2018 at 11:49 p.m. from complications due to pneumonia. She was surrounded by her family and friends and was holding the hand of her Granddaughter Tarese Nicole Schoffstall. Jean was born Nov 21, 1933 in Barre, Vermont to the parents of Herbert Lewis MacLeod and Doris Lillian Barton. Herbert MacLeod’s parents were Alexander MacLeod and Annie McAuley. Doris Barton’s parents were Fred W. Barton and Marietta Martin. Jean was the only child. Jean’s first job was bookkeeper at the Rock of Ages Granite Quarry in Graniteville, Vermont. She worked with her dad who was the foreman and engineer at the Quarry. Her dad taught her how to fish and ski; they enjoyed skiing the slopes of Stowe, Vermont. She was a Music of Arts major at Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina in the 1953-54 school year. Jean worked at Bell Telephone selling telephones and as a switch operator. It was while working at Bell Telephone that she would be introduced to Raymond Ely (previously passed December 6, 2003). Jean started playing the piano at 12 years old. Her mom thought it was best that she learned from an accomplished teacher, even though she herself played the piano for the local church. Jean’s first piano teacher was Josephine H. Perry who was known for the piano piece she authored and played, “Hail Vermont” which became the State song. In the late 1940’s Jean would play piano and chimes for the First Presbyterian Church of Barre, Vermont and for special events. Throughout the 1950’s she would play the piano as her mom played the organ for the First Presbyterian Church of Graniteville, Vermont. She married Raymond Oliver Ely on October 30, 1959. Together they had 5 children; Mark Raymond Ely, Gary Lewis Ely, Glenn Scott Ely, John Eric Ely and Dorinda Jean Ely. John and Dorinda are twins. As a dependent wife of an active duty member of the Unites States Army, they were stationed at multiple posts: Fort Lee Virginia, Augsburg, Germany, Fort Sill, Oklahoma and finally Fort Leonard Wood in 1966 where they retired. Jean played the piano for the First Christian Church, Buckhorn Baptist Church, Waynesville Baptist Church and First Baptist Church, Waynesville until 2008. She gave piano lessons to numerous children and young adults throughout that period. Jean lost her only daughter (Dorinda Jean Ely) to leukemia in December 1970. Dorinda was only five years old. Jean never left the area because the connection with her daughter and the location she was buried. Jean enjoyed communicating through music. She would use any opportunity to share her talents with her friends and family. Jean’s finger warmups would always start with the Missouri Waltz following a quick step into the Boogie Woogie. Jean lived a life full of happiness and made many memories with those who loved and cherished her most. She was thankful for the life her Lord and Savior had blessed her with and, above all, wanted everyone to know that without God we would be nothing. Her family and friends will greatly miss her witty humor and beautiful smile, but find peace in knowing she is right where she has always longed to be; in her forever home. Jean leaves to cherish her memory, her Children: Mark Raymond Ely and wife Linda, Gary Lewis Ely and wife Sandy, Glenn Scott Ely and wife Crystal, and John Eric Ely and wife Christina. Grandchildren: Dustin Lane, Tarese Nicole Schoffstall and husband Brian, Paul MacLeod Ely, Nathan Scott Ely, Rachel Mariah Saladino and husband Billy, Zachery Alexander Ely, Joshua Dean Ely, Dorinda Michelle Ely, Brandon Scott Ely, Devon Raymond Jacoby-Ely, Lauren Elisabeth Ely, Ryan Scott Ely, Paige Analiese Ely, Landon Scott Ely, and Caden Scott Ely. Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2018 in the Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville / St. Robert with Brian Schoffstall officiating. The songs “Amazing Grace” and “Because He Lives” were played. Serving as escorts were Mark, Gary, Glenn, John, Nathan, Brandon, Ryan, Joshua, Zach and Devon Ely. Burial followed in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery of Waynesville, Missouri. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Jean Ely and may be left at the funeral home.
