a man is but a man, whether he hoists his flag at the main-truck or his slacks on the main-deck. DICK. Ah, it’s a queer world! RALPH. Dick Deadeye, I have no desire to press hardly on you, but such a revolutionary sentiment is enough to make an honest sailor shudder.
also this
SIR JOSEPH. How came your captain so far to forget himself? I am quite sure you had given him no cause for annoyance. RALPH. Please your honour, it was thus-wise. You see I’m only a topman – a mere foremast hand – SIR JOSEPH. Don’t be ashamed of that. Your position as a topman is a very exalted one. RALPH. Well, your honour, love burns as brightly in the fo’c’sle as it does on the quarter-deck, and Josephine is the fairest bud that ever blossomed upon the tree of a poor fellow’s wildest hopes.

You know what show I really hope the ghosts put on while they were all together? HMS Pinafore. Everyone from Fanny onwards most likely knew it reasonably well already, either by cultural osmosis or from being a theatre gay, and for the rest it's probably the easiest operetta to pick up that's ever existed.
Tumblr media
I imagine it would have gone down something like this:
Josephine Corcoran- Kitty
Ralph Rackstraw - Thomas
Absolute no-brainers for the lead soprano and tenor. Ralph scores extra points for being one of the most dramatic and flouncy tenors Gilbert ever wrote. At one point he has a speech that's so flowery it's genuinely incomprehensible. Unfortunately his big aria is terribly dull (still in-character tbh) but both of Josephine's are brilliant. Especially "The hours creep on apace", where, having secretly accepted Ralph's proposal, she does waver a bit since, after all, he is a bit of a pleb.
Captain Corcoran - The Captain
Keeps the Pinafore ship-shape and Bristol-fashion. Would have a lovely father-daughter relationship with Josephine. Gets to be in lots of bangin' numbers, especially "I am the Captain of the Pinafore".
Captain: I do my best to satisfy you all -
Crew: And with you we're quite content!
Captain: You're exceedingly polite and I think it's only right to return the compliment.
Sir Joseph Porter - Julian
Marvellously smug and superior patter baritone who got to his lofty position via flattery and luck rather than merit. No direction needed.
Little Buttercup - Fanny
I think she would struggle playing someone who's meant to be lowly, but on the other hand she'd probably really get into every other aspect of the character, especially when she gets to drop mysterious hints all the way through, and dramatically reveal the twist at the end. (She also really reminds me of the mature student who played Little Buttercup for my university's Light Opera Society once, who was very definitely another repressed middle-aged horndog. Get it, girl.)
Cousin Hebe - Mary
Not much of a part, but I suspect getting Mary to concentrate on something like this for any length of time without going off on a tangent would be... tricky. Would be enthusiastic about helping Josephine and might have to be held back from headbutting Captain Corcoran when he tries to stop the elopement.
Dick Deadeye - Robin
Hunched, triangular bass Dick Deadeye growls his way through the opera causing chaos just... 'cos. Is far more perceptive than the Captain and has to really spell out that Josephine and Ralph are planning on running away together.
Bosun's Mate - Humphrey's head
Carpenter's mate and director - Pat
This probably required slightly delicate handling, since Pat is the better singer (and He is an Englishman is harder than it looks), but a) keeping rehearsals from descending into anarchy probably took all his energy and b) Humphrey might have been slightly grumpy being relegated to a really tiny role again. At least they both get to be in A British Tar is a Soaring Soul.
Chorus of sisters, cousins, and aunts - Humphrey's body
Carries the whole show on his back.

JOSEPHINE SCHUESTER
☆ FULL NAME: Josephine "Josie" Lily Schuester ☆ GENDER: Ciswoman ☆ PRONOUNS: She/Her ☆ AGE: 36 (March 9th, 1988) ☆ TYPE: Full sibling; solo (open to twin) ☆ HOMETOWN: Columbus, Ohio ☆ JOB: Music Therapy Professor; Music Therapist ☆ SCHOOL: PSU Alumni ☆ SEXUALITY: Lesbian ☆ FACECLAIM: Brittany Snow
ABOUT JOSEPHINE
Being the first born Schuester, Josephine always knew that she had large shoes to fill. Her parents expected a lot out of her without ever really pressuring her, but she still listened nonetheless. They'd enrolling her in acting classes, vocal lessons, dancing lessons and everything in between, hoping that she would follow in Will's footsteps. Josephine absolutely loved it. She loved being surrounded by music, to watch people move their bodies in sync with a rhythm, the way they brought characters to life. It all fascinated her, and she grew quite fond of the community. The issue, however, was the Josephine wasn't good at any of it. Will had hoped that the more classes that she took, that there would be an improvement. Unfortunately, that never came. What she had in enthusiasm, she lacked in talent.
Josephine continued doing what she loved, though - she was oftentimes cast as the chorus, or the character that didn't have a line in the school play. She was rejected, but she didn't mind - she wanted to be like her father, and she was going to continue working at it. Around the time when Josephine was a teenager, she came to the realization that she just simply had no talent. The firstborn of Will Schuester had zero talent. Embarrassing, but she embraced it anyway. She still saw how music had transformed people, the way her father took so much care in the people he'd taught - and how it could change their lives. It was essentially therapy, she'd thought.
Which is exactly why she declared her major as Music Therapy. She fell in love with the subject, and learning more and more about both psychology and music changed her whole world. She was good at something and that was all that mattered to her.
After college and starting her career, Josephine met Addy Corcoran. The two fell in love quickly, and for a while, their relationship felt like the one stable thing in Josephine's life. But work became more demanding and she found herself increasingly consumed by work. The long hours started to create a rift between her and Addy. Josephine struggled to separate her professional life from her personal one, and the constant stress led to more and more fights. Despite how much she loves Addy, Josephine finds herself repeating the same mistakes —working too much and not knowing how to balance her career with her relationship.
FAMILY BACKGROUND
The very epitome of theater kid himself, Will Schuester’s life was always going to be surrounded by performance. Unfortunately for him, marrying his high school sweetheart, Terri, turned out to be more sour than sweet, and when their relationship turned toxic, with Terri faking a pregnancy in an effort to keep him around, Will had to give up on his then-dream job of coaching a winning high school Glee Club for free to focus on his main Spanish teaching job. When news of Terri’s fake pregnancy came to light, Will filed for divorce, seeking comfort in the arms of his colleague, the school’s guidance counselor, Emma Pillsbury. The two wed in the year to follow.
Supported by his new wife—who made more than him financially anyway—Will decided to quit his job as high school Spanish teacher, and instead secure a space to open a performing arts studio. The studio and its classes growing in popularity quickly, Will was approached by a production company interested in making a reality show. Soon, The Schue Must Go On, a show focusing on the studio’s child performers with Will the adult face as the main teacher and owner, was born. It was supposed to be something of a filler show, but it gained followers quickly, and soon America was obsessed with watching bratty children compete against each other in their dance, voice and acting classes under Will’s guidance, his family shooting to fame in the blink of an eye.
As parents, Will and Emma can be described best as helicopter parents. They’re very over-protective, and try to be involved in every aspect of their children’s lives, despite how busy they are with The Schue Must Go On, which, somehow, is still going strong and has spawned many an off-shoot instalment. Will is an esteemed performing arts coach, and has appeared as a guest judge on various talent shows (AGT, The Voice, DWTS, etc.) alongside his role as head of his studio, and of the Schuester family.

Was that [JOSEPHINE LANGFORD]? Oh no no, that was just [SELLA PALPATINE], a [CANON CHARACTER] from [STAR WARS]. They are [TWENTY THREE] years old, use [SHE/HER], and [ARE] aware that they are not actually from Washington DC. Too bad they can’t stray from this city for long.
how long has your character been here
girl's been here for nearly 3 years now what in the world
what is your character’s job
she is the personal assistant to winter celchu ! she is also a full time student , enrolled the george washington university, but specifically corcoran school of art and design and getting a fine arts degree !!
where has your character been pulled from in their fandom
she’s pulled right after her brother killed her and the rest of her family. she’s having a ✨terrible time✨
has any magic affected your character
beyond bringing her back to life, no not at all ! she had died back in april 2022 but she’s good, she’s cool now. she also died back in summer of 2023, shoutout to jgy for that driving, but yeah, she’s fine now!
extra information
maig here with another hardheaded brat of a muse !! this time in the form of sella palpatine , sheev’s youngest sister. listen i’m so excited for her chaos you have no idea kldfjgkldf a blanket apology for her now thank u enjoy ( 2023 me coming in to say i still apologize for her and who she is as a person, BUT SELLA STANDS AS THE ONE PERSON TO HIT SHEEV PALPATINE SEVERAL AND LIVE THANK YOU )
the youngest daughter of sarra and cosinga palpatine, and twin sister of sion, she was always the picture perfect child. she saw the way her father threated her eldest brother, the way anyone speaking out against their father would invoke his anger, she spent most of her childhood watching and learning from her siblings, knowing that she would not be following in those same footsteps.
she was always the ‘yes ma’am’ ‘yes sir’ child, listening to anything and everything her father and mother would say, never speaking out against them. she would do everything in her power to be the perfect child. she never once would be at the mercy of her father’s anger.
but that didn’t mean that she ever agreed with her father or the path that he had chosen for her and her siblings. she was just cautious about if and when she spoke against it. if her siblings allowed it, she would rant and rave about wanting to run away, to be anything but a pawn for cosinga, until her voice went hoarse.
the late night conversations of her, red faced and crying, sitting in sabina’s room, begging to be anything BUT a palpatine, wishing that she could be free of the life she was being forced into was something she will always remember, even if things are different here. that stays with her.
while she didn’t agree with the way her father treated sheev, she couldn’t help but fear him in the same breath. she was the youngest, only a child for the most of their father’s tyranny, how in the stars was she meant to speak out or help?
very skilled in her social skills, having put a lot of pride in her ability to have many faces depending on who she was speaking to. but very few people got to see sella for who she was and not what she was supposed to be.
she saw the way her life was headed, the path her father wanted her to take, the arranged marriages for his political gain and was trying to do everything in her power to leave. to get far from their family as possible, but knew it would be a long game.
unfortunately, that plan never truly got off it’s feet as she and the rest of her family were killed by sheev.
being in dc, she’s very excited that she finally gets to have the life that she wanted all along. even if it’s a little different, and she’s been struggling with her identity, with the safety she feels her family is lacking, all of that– she is just happy to be somewhere where she can be just sella.
is currently dating allana solo, and most likely moving in together. they’re happy, she’s living the dream rn and doesn’t really know anything about the whole situation between the plapatines and the solos. to sella, she just thinks that sheev and leia are friends and that’s about it
goes by sella rhuno at work, to minimize the questions about being related to sheev since she knows he likes to keep the family sort of secret. as far as sella knows, he does have enemies in the city, and she was p convinced for a while that the jedi themselves were evil.
she’s doing better with that now, but is still p hesitant around the force and everything.
but the most important thing to know about sella is that she is the color pink personified, and has her entire family wrapped around her finger. her crying is the most dangerous weapon in the world, and her gf’s scary dog privilege card. if sidious is ready to murder just from his sister tearing up, there’s nothing sella can’t get away with.
also here’s information from when she was unaware
UPDATE AS OF 12/12/23
currently VERY in love with allana solo, full on sapphic space romeo and juliet vibes
is very aware of the fact that she is probably sheev's favorite sibling, even if he won't say it, she's given herself that title, and all the things that come with that.
that being said, it was a big part in a fight that she and sabina had, where she was basically called out for being easily bought and manipulated which... sab is right but sella didn't need the forced self reflection
she is currently struggling with the fight that she and sabina had, that resulted in her sister nearly killing her, and then later on in that same day, sella killed her gf allana, she thought she was a monster in the maze ok-- so rn it's just all around a bad fucking time for sella palpatine and she is closing herself off more than ever before
CONNECTIONS :
✩ co-workers
anyone who works in politics or in the white house !! sella goes around to a lot of meetings with winter and is dropping things off in a ton of different offices so she would easily see people around
✩ friends !!! pls !!!
she’s never really had them and would love to have some now , pls be her friend i promise she’s super fun !!
✩ classmates
she goes to georgetown so could easily run into other students during like core classes / if you’re an art student !!
✩ sw person who tells her the truth
sella currently goes by rhuno everywhere she goes, she knows that she’s supposed to keep her name a secret. but i think it’d be fun for someone to hear her mention palpatine, mention being his sister or something, or just straight up be like ‘yo that guys a dick’
please she’s so sheltered she has no clue who sheev grew up to become i think it’d be funny if someone finally told her who tf sidious is
she knows the basics from her brother but like?? in her head she doesn't actually think sheev was THAT bad. mainly cause sheev doesn't think he was that bad but ya know!! help!!

You say “drone” by Josephine Corcoran
Talk of war is dogging me today and putting me in that nebulous place where I am so benumbed it seems even my outrage is exhausted and nothing can surprise or shock me anymore.
Unsure what kind of poem might speak to me today, I went back to Anthony Wilson's collection of Lifesaving Poems, hoping something that saved him might save me also (we do seem to admire the same kinds of poetry). https://anthonywilsonpoetry.com/2011/06/07/lifesaving-poems-2/
Tumblr media
I am a word nerd in that I fall in love with certain words, and can happily wander the OED thinking about the history of how a word came to mean what it means, or have a discussion about all the different meanings a word can take in different contexts. "You say 'drone'" by Josephine Corcoran explores the word "drone" from music to machinery, from bees to boring public speakers, to arrive at "pilotless missile."
It feels like a conversation at a cocktail party, where the person the speaker is talking to (the one the reader is cast as in this poem) said "drone" maybe with no particular intentions, maybe just in shallow small talk. Or maybe "you" praised the technology. The poem doesn't tell us, but I definitely feel that the speaker was put on edge by the very word.
Agitated. Angry. The speaker rants bitterly (I hear bitterness in lines like "which does no work/but can fertilise the queen" "nobody listening" ). At first it seems like word play. Like "isn't it funny that this one word has so many meanings?"
The turn for me is in these lines:
at a party I was cornered in a kitchen            by someone saying teacher, engineer, doctor someone saying terrorist            the radio is saying people
All those definitions. All those titles that might be given to a person. A single person depending on where you're standing and how you know them might be any of these things, or even all of them at the same time. All these things "someone said" become the drone . . . the long low moan and the disconnected attack that doesn't see that which it kills.
Powerful. So glad I found this poem today.

Thanks to the heroic work of Catherine Corless, here are the names of the seven hundred and ninety-six children who died in a Tuam mother and baby home run by the Catholic Church in collusion with the government in Ireland, and whose bodies were thrown into a septic tank at the site pictured above.
This was one mother and baby home. There is evidence to suggest that we can expect similar results from the many other Irish mother and baby homes (and this is without talking about Magdalene Laundries).
I’m not putting any of this under a Read More link. I’m just not.

Too bad they can’t stray from this city for long.
how long has your character been here
she’s been here for the better part of a year and a half !!
what is your character’s job
she is the personal assistant to winter celchu ! she is also a full time student , enrolled the george washington university, but specifically corcoran school of art and design and getting a fine arts degree !!
where has your character been pulled from in their fandom
she’s pulled right after her brother killed her and the rest of her family. she’s having a ✨terrible time✨
has any magic affected your character
beyond bringing her back to life, no not at all ! she had died back in april 2022 but she’s good, she’s cool now. she did get tortured back to remembering (shoutout to rhiannon, you’re a real one) but yeah, she’s fine now!
extra information
maig here with another hardheaded brat of a muse !! this time in the form of sella palpatine , sheev’s youngest sister. listen i’m so excited for her chaos you have no idea kldfjgkldf a blanket apology for her now thank u enjoy ( 2022 me coming in to say i still apologize for her and who she is as a person, BUT SELLA STANDS AS THE ONE PERSON TO HIT SHEEV AND LIVE THANK YOU )
the youngest daughter of sarra and cosinga palpatine, and twin sister of sion, she was always the picture perfect child. she saw the way her father threated her eldest brother, the way anyone speaking out against their father would invoke his anger, she spent most of her childhood watching and learning from her siblings, knowing that she would not be following in those same footsteps.
she was always the ‘yes ma’am’ ‘yes sir’ child, listening to anything and everything her father and mother would say, never speaking out against them. she would do everything in her power to be the perfect child. she never once would be at the mercy of her father’s anger.
but that didn’t mean that she ever agreed with her father or the path that he had chosen for her and her siblings. she was just cautious about if and when she spoke against it. if her siblings allowed it, she would rant and rave about wanting to run away, to be anything but a pawn for cosinga, until her voice went hoarse.
the late night conversations of her, red faced and crying, sitting in sabina’s room, begging to be anything BUT a palpatine, wishing that she could be free of the life she was being forced into was something she will always remember, even if things are different here. that stays with her.
while she didn’t agree with the way her father treated sheev, she couldn’t help but fear him in the same breath. she was the youngest, only a child for the most of their father’s tyranny, how in the stars was she meant to speak out or help?
very skilled in her social skills, having put a lot of pride in her ability to have many faces depending on who she was speaking to. but very few people got to see sella for who she was and not what she was supposed to be.
she saw the way her life was headed, the path her father wanted her to take, the arranged marriages for his political gain and was trying to do everything in her power to leave. to get far from their family as possible, but knew it would be a long game.
unfortunately, that plan never truly got off it’s feet as she and the rest of her family were killed by sheev.
being in dc, she’s very excited that she finally gets to have the life that she wanted all along. even if it’s a little different, and she’s been struggling with her identity, with the safety she feels her family is lacking, all of that-- she is just happy to be somewhere where she can be just sella.
is currently dating allana solo, and most likely moving in together. they’re happy, she’s living the dream rn and doesn’t really know anything about the whole situation between the plapatines and the solos. to sella, she just thinks that sheev and leia are friends and that’s about it
goes by sella rhuno at work, to minimize the questions about being related to sheev since she knows he likes to keep the family sort of secret. as far as sella knows, he does have enemies in the city, and she was p convinced for a while that the jedi themselves were evil.
she’s doing better with that now, but is still p hesitant around the force and everything.
but the most important thing to know about sella is that she is the color pink personified, and has her entire family wrapped around her finger. her crying is the most dangerous weapon in the world, and her gf’s scary dog privilege card. if sidious is ready to murder just from his sister tearing up, there’s nothing sella can’t get away with.
also here’s information from when she was unaware
