Week 1 - SDL
For our SDl we were asked to do some research about the designers we are including in our pamphlet to help us understand the information we are presenting.
Joseph Churchward
Joseph Churchward is a New Zealand designer that has designed an impressive amount of typefaces in his career. He worked with the german company Berthold Fototype who distributed his fonts throughout the world. He passed away in 2013 so I found it incredibly interesting that he was a keynote speaker for this conference.
Below are some examples of his work:

Tumblr has been created wooo, so imma just start posting my OCs
Joseph Churchward
Basis: GWR 4300 No.5319
Bio: Built in 1917 for the GWR, Joseph (along with several of his siblings) was sent over to France as part of the Railway Operating Division. There he met Alastair, his best buddy, and Betty, an engine he fancies. Joseph worked in the Western Region all the way until his withdrawal in 1959, when he was purchased by the ORS
Joseph has a tendency to be a bit cheeky at times, but is strong-willed, and it takes a lot to break him. He is quick-witted and takes action swiftly without hesitation. He’s always ready to stand up for the smaller guys (especially Betty), and is willing to set aside his own safety for the sake of others.
He does sometimes have a bit of a short temper, but he is also smart enough to listen to the advice of the older, more experienced engines. He can also be seen as a big brother to smaller and younger engines like Jordy and Jami

WEEK 6- FILL THIS
One from Aotearoa Gerbrand - Why I choose Gerbrand
The reason why I choose Gerbrand is because of his roots and where he is now. From the stories he tells us, G started as a designer for gigs, small punk bands. I see myself where G was when he was younger. Right now I'm designing for 95bfm and during high school I designed posters for our high school gigs. and G's design progression reflects his roots. you can still see the inner punk in his designs though now it's a bit more professional and complex he never shies away from a challenge and experimentation and it never lacks his personality
Joseph Churchward - Why I choose Churchward The reason why I choose Churchward is that his fonts really speak to me. i never knew this man personally but his fonts tell a story of who he is and where he came from. just like G, his work shows who he is regardless of what kind of work he is doing. his adaptability and wide skill range in terms of font design are what I aspire to be. to his clients his fonts are just another bauhaus like font or another sanserif font that reflects their brand. but to him and to the people who knows his font shows his culture and the roots behind it
Two Must be practicing today -The design republic, Ian Anderson. Design Republic work is the aesthetic that I aspire to be these days. I love the clean design they make the playfulness and the vibrant colors while keeping it clean and edgy is just right up my alley. they have a goal of leaving a strong narrative to the audience and the client by using strategic thinking and problem-solving into their design. just like what they said in their About page "They want to provoke the desired response" which is something I believe I should also try and achieve for my designs.
Poppy design.
Chris Ashworth -show personality in their work -consistent style and language-because of his style all his work is always unique and irreplaceable -because of his Swiss gritty art style, he can be adaptable in both professional and grunge youth field -this order in the chaos he creates, he doesn't just make random crap he makes crap out of random
I want to achiev chaos and and legibility like chris ashworth
Historical Nam Jun Paike Petitbon WaReZ groups (special mention)

Week Three: Tutorial/SDL
aits WitThis weeks lecture was focusing on how to find good resources and where, the lecture was led by one of the librarians. Below are my notes from the lecture, including sources to go visit and how, and also how to know what is good and reliable.
In the tutorial we got into groups and began discussing our sdl task and who the designers we had been looking into were and how they are relevant to us. We all chose three of our ten each and placed it on a Miroboard and wrote how each of them are connected.
Class Activity: Finding Credible sources
Our in class activity/ SDL was to find credible sources using the resources shown in the lecture, we were given 4 topics and within those four are to chose five points to research and find a credible source for, referencing correctly as well.
1. Specific Techniques and craft

Collage
Mood board. (n.d.). Retrieved 4 August 2023, from http://www.bloomsburyvisualarts.com/bva-hub/encyclopedia-chapter

Cyanotype
Saska, H. (2010). Anna atkins: Photographs of british algae. Bulletin of the Detroit Institute of Arts, 84(1/4), 8–15. https://www.jstor.org/stable/23183243

Week 2: 20 Creatives
For our week 2 SDL, we were also asked to collect work from 20 creatives, with 10 specifically being from NZ.
International Creatives
NZ Creatives
Based on last week's event research, I researched 5 more international creatives. I then researched 10 New Zealand creatives who have worked with a variety of media and subject matter.
The international creatives were chosen based on their contribution to many significant art and design movements throughout history, and the NZ creatives' work are more diverse, focused on different media and subject matters, both internal and external.

Typografika heading for poster
My two developed designs for the poster heading (typografika) I tried to use some of the keynotes speakers own typography work as inspiration. Creating 3d/popout letter style that Joseph Churchward and Jessica hische used. I also incorporated the work of Nadine Chahine with the fading like look on one of her designs. While using this as inspiration I also unique flares to it to make it more original.

Joseph Churchward (foundry: Churchward Type) was born and raised in Samoa. He moved to New Zealand at age 13 and attended Wellington Technical College. There he concentrated on art and especially lettering. He then went on to work as a commercial artist at Charles Haines Advertising for 12 years before setting up Churchward International Typefaces in 1969. His first breakthrough was not long in coming. Berthold Fototype accepted several of his first typefaces for distribution and continued to add Churchward’s new designs to their catalogue for many years. He later went on to sign distribution agreements with D.Stempel AG, Dr Böger Photosatz GmbH/Linotype, Mecanorma-Polyvroom B.V and Zipatone. Churchward International Typefaces published a handful of original fonts in 1978 being the first and only company in New Zealand to publish original photo lettering. Now officially retired, he continues to create unique alphabets and has over 300 original faces to his name.
Verena Gerlach was born in Berlin and studied Visual Communication at Kunsthochschule Berlin Weißensee.
Shortly after finishing art school in 1998, she founded her own studio (fraugerlach) for graphic design, type design and typography. As well as all kinds of typographic print works and type design, Verena also art directed several video clips and worked on the typographic production for international contemporary artists.
Verena gives lectures and workshops about the type and graphic design all over the globe. She also works as a freelance book designer for different art book publishers.

I really admire Joseph's large collection of type as it is all so unique and different from each other. I also think it's cool how he has used different aspects of his cultures in his works reflecting on himself and where he's from.

Work in progress and note - Parent page and decoration
The meaning of selected alphabet and opacity
The parent page is a function similar to the paragraph style and helps manage the page background even though we only have two pages maximumly according to this project. There is a point out for the parent page on the brochure side. I played the contrast with Graphite Std and picked letters in each sub-page. These letters only remain in around 30~60% of opacity to prevent it will affect the displaying of content, which act as the supporting role at this stage. They are all containing meaning for content accordingly like below:
The reading order from up-left to right:
C and E for Conference pages.
J for Joseph Churchward.
T for Tobias Frere Jones.
V for Verena Gerlach.
N for Nadine Chahine.
C for Carol Twombly
V for Veronika Burian
J for Jessica Hische
J for Johnson Witehira
Double T for Timetable
M for Map
The actual view after applied the parent page
I lay out these selected letters backwards the images and contents and only play some overlay to others for the gradient differentiate with background colours. The advantage of Graphite Std is it contains some liner strokes for each letter and emphasises the grid at this stage. I randomly select the font size and opacity, then make them align to something and get involved in the entire brochure.
