Being Bud Cort
Always hold out for something better, that’s today’s lesson. I had four potential performing artists flagged whom I might have written about this morning but I could work up an enthusiasm for none of them — and I had already written about Joe Cook, Joseph Cawthorn, Albert Von Tilzer, Pearl Bailey, Jackie Vernon, Bobby “Wheezer” Hutchins, Warner Baxter, Arthur O’Connell, Phil Foster, Frank Tinney,…

MEA Weekend 2024
Wednesday, October 16, 2024
MEA Weekend is finally here! Conferences after school yesterday which made for a 13 hour day. Everything went well but it was exhausting. More conferences today during the workday but no classes for kids.
Celebratory cigar after I got home. Four day weekend lies ahead.
Finished my cigar shortly after Dale returned home from work. Headed to Lunds to pick up dinner.
We're doing a soberish October to limit our alcohol intake but decided to reasonably indulge tonight. I had an Old Fashioned and Dale had wine.
Watched the film White Zombie on TCM.
Although poorly received critically in its day the film was moderately successful especially for being a low budget independent film. Despite the poor acting quality the film recieved accolades for its stylistic and atmospheric cinematography. Bela Lugosi as the zombie master, "Murder" Legrande, and Joseph Cawthorn as the minister received better reviews than the other actors. White Zombie is considered the first full length Zombie movie. Despite its faults I found the movie to be fun and highly watchable. Notably the film utilized sets from other horror movies of the era including The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Frankenstein, and The Cat and the Canary.

Dread by the Decade: White Zombie
👻 You can support me on Ko-fi ❤️
★½
Plot: A man hires a priest to turn the woman who spurned him into a zombie.
Review: More listless than the zombies it claims to be about, White Zombie is a chore to sit through, all bland plot, flat characters, and overt racism.
Source Material: The Magic Island by William Seabrook Year: 1932 Genre: Occult, Supernatural Horror Country: United States Language: English Runtime: 1 hour 9 minutes
Director: Victor Halperin Writer: Garnett Weston Cinematographer: Arthur Martinelli Editor: Harold McLernon Composer: Abe Meyer Cast: Bela Lugosi, Madge Bellamy, Joseph Cawthorn, Robert W. Frazer
-----
Story: 1.5/5 - As contrived as it is bare, with characters devoid of personality, no scares, and an ugly misrepresentation of vodou and Haitian people.
Performances: 2/5 - No one has much to work with. Lugosi seems bored, often just reverting to his Dracula stare.
Cinematography: 2/5 - Little visual creativity.
Editing: 2/5 - No real flow.
Music and Sound: 1.5/5 - The sound quality is quite poor and the music is unmemorable.
Effects: 2/5 - Cheap and quite weak compared to its contemporaries.
Sets: 3.5/5
Costumes, Hair, & Make-Up: 2/5 - The brown and blackface is, sadly, the most memorable feature.

Trigger Warnings:
Blackface
Brownface
Racist portrayals of Haitians and the vodou religion

White Zombie (1932)
My rating: 4/10
Kind of weird how much this one still looks and feels like a silent movie - much more so than many of its contemporaries - and Lugosi is kind of fun as the world's most Hungarian Haitian (Frenchman? Whatever he's supposed to be), but overall this hasn't aged very well at all.

White Zombie (1932)
“Some 86 years later, White Zombie’s menace sticks. This isn’t the kind of movie you can shower off. It buries itself under our skin, just like one of Murder Legendre’s needles. And I like it that way.”
