Inquiring minds are asking about my headcanons! I will absolutely provide but first let me also highly encourage y'all to read these tags (and the AO3 tag generally) – because part of what I love here is these two weirdos have so much going on there is A Lot to explore

First of all I do think they could fix each other! Most of my fic explores that premise, either in a literal 'Jopson with a gun could save Irving's life' canonverse way or in a 'Jopson would not put up with Irving's internalized homophobia, and Irving would not put up with Jopson's self-denial' coffeeshop/BDSM AU type of way

I also think they could make each other worse, and push each other to unhealthy lengths – I'm rotating @voyage-of-the-porn-spreader's tag about having Crozier as a mother-in-law because yeah just imagine marrying into (gestures with great respect and affection) whatever the hell is going on between Jopson and Crozier! It can be great, it can be terrible, this is what makes a fictional relationship wildly interesting, no??

Verse Info: Good and Faithful (or, a polite haunting) 

The Story - 

( Good and Faithful, Codifier )      -     In which Jopson died just before the 1839 expedition. He tends to avoid discussion of how it actually happened, but in any case he had just accepted the stewardship position and had been counting on those wages to pay the doctor for his mother’s treatment, and needed to ensure that she and Avery would be reasonably comfortable in his absence.  

Being that he had neither time nor inclination to be dead, and truthfully not quite even realizing he was dead, Jopson simply collected himself and carried on as usual, under the impression that the whole incident was simply a minor dizzy spell.

The issue, of course, with continuing to pilot one’s corporeal form with a severed connection between body and ghost, is that it’s somewhat akin to clutching a bedsheet in front of yourself while standing outside in a hurricane. And in addition to keeping hold of that bedsheet, you also have to hang up the rest of the laundry on the lines, and avoid letting your neighbors see that you’re out in a hurricane in nothing but a bedsheet still trying to finish your laundry, because odds are your neighbors will have Questions about this type of behavior. 

Fortunately, Jopson had always been quick to catch on to things so it was with only a minor bout of sudden collapses and fits of uncharacteristic clumsiness that he mostly got the hang of the situation before setting sail, and for the most part was able to avoid any trouble. 

Avoiding trouble lasted until a point about halfway through the expedition, when he very nearly frightened Captain Crozier into a similar state by forgetting to shiver. Or keep up a pulse. This almost led to a rather tender moment indeed as Crozier was quite unhappy to see him Dying, but this was abated by admitting to already having been quite dead from the beginning and thus unchanged in status despite what ought to have been a lethal case of hypothermia.

All in all, Crozier was actually rather more amenable to the idea of having a dead steward than he’d thought ten minutes prior, and all continued as normal. 

However

Once the Franklin Expedition begins

( Oh Dear, My Heart/The Moon Plays Host ) 

It turns out that keeping hold of the proverbial bedsheet is a lot more challenging under certain conditions, and there are only so many ‘fainting spells’ that can be got away with without arousing suspicion, and that the presence of a strange magic in the air tends to have interesting effects on ghosts improperly connected to the mortal plane.

It further turns out that this arrangement creates a bit of an impasse when faced with soul-devouring creatures. They are used to tackling a body and pulling the soul from it. The soul simply moving out of the way is not generally expected, and is regarded as highly inconvenient. 

Or, 

Jopson is a ghost during the Franklin Expedition, which is fine, except that improperly tethered ghosts start to get a little bit creature-y the longer they drift in seemingly-cursed landscapes trying to reject their souls like a bad transplant. Also, at night, Jopson can see the crew’s Dead still wandering the ice.

🍌 - Who is someone that makes them feel uncomfortable? How do they handle interactions with this person? What is the source of the discomfort?

🍎 - What is a hobby or interest that they would be distressed over losing access to? I.e a dancer who breaks their leg for months, etc. How would they cope?

(I was going to ask how organised her is, but we know he's numbered and lined up every rivet in the ship's hull ;))

🍌 - He isn't super comfortable with Silna, just due to the circumstances of her arrival and the fact that she's an unknown/unexpected entity.

Otherwise, it's less any specific people who make him uncomfortable, and more situations/behaviors. He doesn't much care about social status, so it's not a matter of feeling inferior to anyone, but he's also very aware of the perimeters of his role (whether self-assigned or otherwise designated) and tends to struggle when those perimeters are interrupted, such as when his position as Steward starts to become increasingly irrelevant.

For the most part those same perimeters are what he actually uses to deal with discomfort. He keeps up a professional distance and is highly selective about with whom to shorten it.

Although when the perimeters are well and truly disrupted, rather than professionalism he'll hard-swerve the other way into just not giving a damn, like with Hickey and the "Shot Smaller Hawks" interaction.

🍎 - i mean him being obsessed with his job is a meme but also for him the literal worst part of the scurvy/lead poisoning/starvation was getting to where he couldn't work, and getting to the point where there was nothing he could do to feel useful. Any verse or au where anything prevents him from doing his job, he's absolutely looking for any alternative activity like .... can't be up and about? he's doing enough knitting/sewing for a small village. Can be up and about but use of hands is limited for some reason? he's running messages or smthn. Best timeline of the Jopving fic he's thoroughly charming Irving's great grandmother and helping her with a quilt. He's got to be doing something most of the time.

( and you are...Correct about the organizing XD It's the fact that he remember how many bottles of whiskey without even pausing to think about it for me XD )
