Fall Brings More TV Series and Spending to New York
$1.2+ Billion for the Season; $2.4 Billion to-date in 2018
During the next two months, new television shows and new seasons of returning shows will be added to the viewing lineup, including at least 19 new and returning series shot in New York that represent more than $1.2 billion in estimated New York spend and an estimated 80,000+ hires. Add in the shows already airing this year and the total climbs to 55 shows that have either applied, or plan to apply, to the New York State Film Tax Credit program. The 55 shows represent an estimated $2.4 billion in New York spend – up almost 31 percent compared to the same period last year—and more than 142,000 hires—up 30 percent from 2017.
Seven of the 19 programs rolling out this fall are new seasons of returning shows, 10 are new series and two – Season 2 of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan (Paramount/Amazon) and Season 6 of Ray Donovan (Showtime)—moved to New York after shooting previous seasons in Los Angeles and Montreal. Returning shows include several long-running network favorites: Season 9 of Blue Bloods (CBS), Season 20 of Law & Order: SVU (NBC), Season 5 of Madam Secretary (CBS), Season 3 of Bull (CBS), Season 4 of Blindspot (NBC) and the second seasons of cable and streaming hits The Deuce (HBO) and Iron Fist (ABC/Netflix).
New shows premiering this fall include a mix of network and streaming series: from CBS, three new shows Tell Me A Story, FBI and God Friended Me—and one reboot, the return of popular 1990s sitcom Murphy Brown; from NBC, New Amsterdam and Manifest; and from Netflix, Maniac and The Good Cop. Lifetime is launching You and Showtime will offer the limited series, Escape at Dannemora.
“TV has embraced New York, and New York has embraced TV,” said producer Jonathan Filley (Succession, The Blacklist, Elementary). “The business has changed so much in recent years. Whether you’re working in broadcast or streaming content, we’re telling stories that are bigger now, longer, stories that run over eight, 10 or more episodes. And New York is made for that, it’s a truly international city, with such a diversity of cast and crew, great range of locations and great tax breaks. “
Even shows that don’t shoot in New York come here to do post production. Six shows that post in New York – four returning and two new—will premiere this fall: Season 9 of The Walking Dead (AMC), Season 4 of Fear the Walking Dead (AMC), Season 2 of both Mars (National Geographic) and The Good Doctor (Sony /ABC), and the first season of both One Dollar (CBS) and The Purge (SyFy). These six series represent an estimated $8.8 million in New York spend.
Last year, Governor Cuomo extended the film tax credit program through 2022, giving television producers the confidence to continue shooting here. By the end of 2017, New York had set a new record with 70 series applications representing an estimated $2.8 billion in New York spend and almost 150,000 hires. With four months left in this year, pilot applications and renewals are continuing—clear signals of the continued strength and contribution of television series production to New York’s media industry.

Posted @withregram • @thedailyjaws 47 YEARS AGO TODAY principal photography began on Jaws. Martha’s Vineyard summer residents Jeff Kramer (Deputy Hendricks) and Jonathan Filley (Tom Cassidy) acted alongside Roy Scheider. South Beach was chosen as the location for the early morning discovery of Chrissie Watkins’ remains and the Jaws saga was just beginning.
