Svaneborg Kardyb — Superkilen (Gondwana)

Danish drums-and-keys duo Svaneborg Kardyb build songs like The Necks in time-lapse. Their miniature dioramas of tone are built using tesselating patterns of repetition on a handful of instruments. Before you know it, the music has evolved in subtle ways, arriving somewhere unexpected. Take the opening title track, for example. Nikolaj Svaneborg’s Wurlitzer plays against the dappled tones of a synthesizer arpeggio, while Jonas Kardyb’s hard-punching drums drive and punctuate proceedings. Round and round the song goes, patiently and hypnotically, Kardyb gradually filling the stereo space with more cymbal strikes and drum fills, until the whole track bursts forth into an ecstatic chord change. It’s masterful stuff.
As well as the title summing up the power of the duo’s modus operandi, “Cycles” is another mighty standout. This time they’re joined by Portico Quartet member Milo Fitzpatrick on double bass and Maria Martine Jagd on violin. As the Wurlitzer and drums lock into mesmerizing interplay, bass gently fills out the low end, then scribbly violin playing agitates the song towards a gently elated climax. Later in the tracklist, “Tide” matches the title track and “Cycles” for inventiveness and lightness of touch, the Wurlitzer blooming forth in ripples of echo as Kardyb lays down an amazing shuffling rhythm in 7/8. Closer “Arendal” is also excellent, moving the duo into slower, darker territories reminiscent of the mighty Bohren & Der Club of Gore.
It’s quite telling that these four standouts on Superkilen are also the longest tracks. Svaneborg Kardyb clearly benefit from wringing all the goodness they can out of their limited but potent ingredients. For this reason, the middle section of the album lags a bit, dominated as it is by shorter, less developed pieces that establish a pleasant vibe but don’t evolve in such satisfying ways. The piano melodies on “St Pancras” and “Udsigten” sound like they could be an inoffensive backdrop to a refined cafe scene; “Balancen” acts more as an interlude than a song in its own right; and though “Vakler” builds a formidable head of steam thanks to some thunderous drum-playing from Kardyb at its climax, that’s about all the song offers.
Despite these reservations, Superkilen is an essential listen for the stellar heights it reaches during its most transcendent moments.

Svaneborg Kardyb are Nikolaj Svaneborg - Wurlitzer, Juno, piano and Jonas Kardyb - drums, percussion a multi award winning duo from Denmark, where they won two "grammys" at the Danish Music Awards Jazz 2019: New artist of the year and Composer of the year. 
Drawing on Danish folk music and Scandinavian jazz influences, including Nils Frahm, Esbjörn Svennson and Jan Johansson's landmark recording Jazz På Svenska, their music is an exquisite and joyful melding of beautiful melodies, delicate minimalism, catchy grooves, subtle electronica vibes, Nordic atmospheres and organic interplay, all underwritten by the sheer joy of playing together. Over Tage (over roofs) is their third album, following Knob (2019) and Haven (2020) and marks their debut for Gondwana Records a label noted for working with artists such as Mammal Hands, Portico Quartet and GoGo Penguin whose music, like that of Svaneborg Kardyb delights in exploring the fertile spaces between genres. For the duo it is their most serious and thoughtful record to date. "It may be our strongest and most honest record so far. Doubts and uncertainty were kind of the foundation for the sounds of the album but there is also hope and lots of uplifting moments and we're very pleased with how it came out." And it is that mixture of elevation and thoughtfulness, honesty and intimacy that makes the music of Svaneborg Kardyb so special and Over Tage such a joy to listen to. The world awaits. Svaneborg Kardyb’s Tiny Desk (home) concert was recorded in the countryside of Djursland, Denmark. “You have to drive for a while on a gravel road, and then you come to a lovely old house surrounded by hills and a stream on one side and a very flat landscape on the other, where you can see 10 miles away,” the band wrote to us, describing the location of the shoot. It’s this place that inspired Svaneborg Kardyb’s second album, Haven. “‘Haven’” (means garden in Danish). Haven celebrates places we like to be,” the duo writes.
The Danish jazz duo is composed of Nikolaj Svaneborg — on the Wurlitzer, synthesizer and piano, and Jonas Kardyb — on drums and percussion. Their instrumentation set-up is untraditional, with the drums and keys facing each other, a position that they play in on stage just as they do in Jonas’ kitchen and living room here. They open up their set with the title track from Haven, which begins with a quiet melody over an effervescent loop. The sound mimics the shimmy of leaves in the breeze.
This concert is the soundtrack for lying beneath a tree canopy and watching the sun illuminate each leaf, seeing the veins clearly as the sun makes its way down to reach each branch. Immersing yourself in nature is grounding, which is reflected in Jonas’ last line describing their (home) concert: “The countryside reminds you that it is lovely to place both feet in the grass.”

the general direction of this world turns from our Creator as people learn to go along with it, with so many things that go against the truth in Love and the way we were made. we don’t even belong to ourselves but people naturally want to rule their own life, albeit as temporal as it is. being “true” to yourself doesn’t mean that you are actually being True in Love that is illuminated to us (God is Love) who has revealed the path of Light and rebirth, first through the Jews, and then to all of us. the Scriptures point out our errors (our sins) against God and also the way back to Love.
and Love has promised to restore the purity, the innocence and Justice to beautiful earth.
A grand end of time (A new beginning)
and so we see (in grace) that we need a new True nature. we need rebirth of the heart (spirit) to see clear (through baptism eyes)
this is the only path of Light into the eternal (through the Son)
could a human heart (spirit) ever be purchased with any amount of earth’s veins of silver or gold?
no. it can only be done through the veins of sacred blood flowing through the Body of earth’s Creator (and it is finished)
this is the point of our treasure.

out of all of this world’s religious thoughts and spiritual rituals, there is but a single path of Light that actually leads the heart to True Life.
if you have the Son you have discovered the very Breath of Life, and if you do not then you do not have eternal life. all that you have is this imperfect world to look forward to and the Judgment to come.
this is True illumination.

Debutalbumet fick utmärkelserna Årets jazzkomponist och Nytt jazznamn av Danish Music Awards. Vi instämmer i hyllningarna; Svaneborg Kardybs minimalistiska och elektroniska atmosfärer är konstnärligt intressanta, men även tillgängliga för en bred publik. Med en fin publiknärvaro, ett elastiskt och organiskt samspel är detta en kväll att se fram emot. Nikolaj Svaneborg - Würlitzer, synthesizer, piano, Jonas Kardyb - drums, percussion.
Kadi Vija Key Project
Kadi Vija Key Project skapar en gåtfull, cineastisk stämning, som om Kaurismäki hade filmatiserat ett manus av Tove Jansson. Ensemblen centreras omkring den egensinniga finsk-estniska sångerskan Kadi Vija (f 1985). Egentligen är vokal instrumentalist en mer korrekt beskrivning, då hon använder rösten som ett instrument. På albumet Ugly Beauty är de vokala insatserna uteslutande ordlösa. Vi möter henne denna kväll med sitt senaste projekt, Kadi Vija Key Project, bestående av en spännande line up med några av Finlands främsta musiker. Debutalbumet Roaming In The Contemporary Society To Make Peace With It fick ett varmt mottagande “Kadi Vija is like a rare instrumemt” (Helsingin Sanomat).

Camille Bertault - lördagen den 11 september kl 20.00
Jazzsångerskan Camille Bertault gick från att vara en inhemsk angelägenhet till ett internationellt utropstecken när hennes kombinerade sång och scat-version av John Coltranes Giant Steps blev ett viralt utropstecken 2015.
Coltrane-tolkningen Là Où Tu Vas hamnade sedermera på den Parisfödda sångerskans album Pas De Géant som - tillsammans med egna texter till klassiker som Bill Evans Very Early, scat-version av Bachs Goldberg-variationer och tolkningar av George Brassens - tog jazzvärlden med storm 2018.
På senaste skivan Le Tigre har Bertault tagit ett helhetsgrepp om text och musik och skrivit och arrat i stort sett allt material. Steely Dans Michael Leonhart, som Bertault även jobbade med till Pas De Géant, har producerat. Med fötterna kvar i jazzen och visan lutar den nya skivan mer åt såväl funk som brasiliansk musik i sin alldeles egna blandning. Trots en eftertänksam och introspektiva sida finns det hos Camille Bertault alltid utrymme för musikaliska klacksparkar och en utsträckt tunga åt all form av tungfotad självupptagenhet. Liksom samtida svenska jazzsångerskor som Amanda Ginsburg har Camille Bertault också en självklar förankring i visa.
Oavsett genre sätter Camille Bertault en personlig färg på materialet, och nya skivan visar att hon är mycket mer än en virtuos scat-improvisatör. Till Fasching kommer Bertault med pianisten Fady Farah, basisten Christophe Minck och Minino Garaï, percussion.

Their debut album, Knob, was one of my favourite albums of 2019, and this new release offers more melodic dub-jazz and atmospheric building. For fans of Bremer/McCoy and Hvalfugl, with touches of Matthew Halsall and Mammal Hands.
