Pianist Pablo Held showed early promise by winning three Young Jazz Musician competitions in Germany, the first when he was just 13. He then went into august company playing with the WDR Big Band and trumpeter Manfred Schoof.

On Forest of Oblivion, his first as a leader, Held shows just why he has been such a strong presence. He plays with a subtle urge for nuance, letting his music glow. Just as certainly, he can turn up the beat and turn in a satisfying performance.

Held's compositions mark the influence of the romantic European tradition, but he also turns his ear and mind to Ravel, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock and Bill Evans. All mark their presence in his tonality and harmonic conception.

Held enunciates his music with flair, aided by empathic bassist Robert Landfermann and drummer Jonas Burgwinkel . The trio works with a consonance that adds to the dynamic, both in the subtle and energetic essays of the compositions. The interaction is seen to advantage on the improvised "Interlude," where the trio constructs a glacial edifice before it gets a more pronounced dimension. Held resolves the initial spaced-out motifs with a shower of crystalline notes that blend in with the rhythm that Burgwinkel stirs with the brushes. As for Landfermann, he lays back and bows his bass, an anchor for the other two.

The delicate title track finds Held in a reflective mood, playing with spatial deliberation. He does stop to inject repeated notes, and for a brief but welcome prance that lights up the path. His take on Wayne Shorter's "Ana Maria" is tantalizing; a point of view that pays homage to the melody, and keeps the emotion tugging even as he reinvents the progression. In doing so, Held stamps his credentials as a thinker and improviser.

"Phasen" throws in a pleasant surprise, evolving into charged bop after a sedate opening. The atmosphere is electric, with crisp drumming, a roiling bass line and a jubilant cascade from the piano, before it all comes back to the quiet.

Held prefers delicate climes but his ability to move away convincingly make him a talent to watch.

Next up in our week of new signings are the German master musicians and adventurous spirits of the Pablo Held Trio. I recently stumbled upon a Jazz trio called Madusa Beats. 

This trio and Nik Bartsch’s ronin are the only people Ive come across so far that use prepared piano in a Jazz context. 

The trio sounds as if they use a relatively free basis for their compositions, drawing on music such as free Jazz. Yet there are points where the trio suddenly feel very together. It begins with a particularly Cage-esque introduction that leads into a very chaotic improvised sound. The keyboard player also uses a small analog synth that adds to the peculiarity of this disjunct, off-kilter jazz. 

This is delving into the sound world that I’m working around in the B section of a composition I mentioned in a previous post. The direction given being gradual free improvisation on Am9, leaving it more up to the players than the composer or arranger.

Drei Virtuosen agieren wie aus einem Guss

JAZZKONZERT Das international beachtete Pablo Held Trio gastierte im Foyer des Theaters.

Der weltweit bewunderte US-Gitarren-Star John Scofield hat nicht nur mit dieser Band gespielt und mit ihr eine Platte veröffentlicht, er hat sie auch ganz impulsiv bei einem Konzert in Dortmund zu Beginn des Jahres über den grünen Klee gelobt. „Das ist es, warum ich Musik mache“, hat er dem Publikum mitgeteilt, weil es nämlich solche Musiker gebe wie die des Pablo Held Trios. Im Foyer des Stadttheaters war das Trio jetzt auf Einladung des Jazzklubs Krefeld zu hören, bei dem ausverkauften Konzert stellte es seine Klasse unter Beweis.

Sie sind ja noch so jung. Aber der Pianist Pablo Held (geboren 1986), der Kontrabassist Robert Landfermann (1982) und der Schlagzeuger Jonas Burgwinkel (1981) spielen nun schon seit zehn Jahren zusammen, das ist auch im Jazz eine außergewöhnlich lange Zeit. Und man hört es, wie sehr sie sich als Band Erfahrung im musikalischen Umgang miteinander erarbeitet haben, ihr Zusammenspiel bewegt sich auf einem irrwitzig hohen Niveau.

Wie die Musiker da immer wieder fließend vom A-Tempo-Spiel ins Rubato gleiten und wieder zurück, das alleine ist schon bemerkenswert. Wie alle drei aufeinander hören, jeder auf jeden reagiert, wie sich dadurch bis in die feinsten Strukturen hinein alles verzahnt und zu einem gemeinsamen Atmen wird, ohne dass die individuellen Stimmen verloren gehen – grandios.

Nach zwei Jahren Zusammenarbeit, so Held zu Beginn, habe man sich entschieden, vor Konzerten keine Absprachen über den Programmverlauf mehr zu treffen. Man könne jetzt aus einem Repertoire von 40 bis 50 Stücken schöpfen, aber was dann letztlich erklinge, entscheide sich intuitiv.

Der also auch in dieser Weise einmalige Abend im Theaterfoyer hatte für die Zuhörer vielleicht nicht die Expressivität zu bieten, die das Trio mit John Scofield zelebrierte. Ganz nah am Publikum, nicht auf der Bühne, sondern vielleicht nur einen Meter vor der ersten Stuhlreihe platziert, pflegte das Trio hier einen transparent-vielschichtigen kammermusikalischen Ansatz.

Stilistisch agiert das Trio postmodern, fußt also auf der Tradition des Modern Jazz, sucht aber auch den Crossover mit Fusion einerseits, freier Musik andererseits, ohne jedoch diese Einflüsse auszustellen. Alles hat es seiner eigenen Sprache anverwandelt, dieses Trio hat sich eine unverwechselbare Klangwelt erschaffen. Als Zugabe interpretierten die Musiker ein Rachmaninoff-Stück, die Auseinandersetzung mit weiteren Komponisten der sogenannten E-Musik findet sich auch auf „Recondita Armonia“, der neuen CD der Band.

Pablo Held, wurde 27. Dezember 1986 in Herdecke in ein musikalisches Elternhaus hinein geboren. Vater und Mutter spielen beide Klavier. Held hat an der Musikhochschule Köln Jazz studiert und das Studium mit Auszeichnung abgeschlossen. Held hat bereits weltweit konzertiert, mehrere hochrangige Preise gewonnen und gilt als „Aushängeschild“ des neuen deutschen Jazz.

Verfolgst du die aktuelle Jazz-Debatte?

Ja und nein. Zuerst ja. Aber nach einer Zeit sind mir ein bisschen die Konstruktiven Ansätze verloren gegangen. Ich hatte den Eindruck, dass sich jeder über jeden ereifert, ohne dass der tatsächliche Wille da gewesen wäre, etwas zu verändern. Dazu muss man zu einem gewissen Konsens kommen, den man anschließend gemeinsam stark macht. Eine gute Sache finde ich beispielsweise die Initiative der UDJ und hoffe, dass sie zu einem wirklich Handlungsfähigen Organ heranwächst.

Hälst du sie für überflüssig oder notwendig?

Notwendig. Sie kann allerdings durch zu vieles "um sich selbst drehen" überflüssig werden.

Mich haben, wenn überhaupt, subjektive Meinungen, die nur aus der Motivation heraus geäußert wurden, für sich selbst einen Vorteil rauszuschlagen und nicht zur Besserung der Gesamtsituation zu führen, geärgert.

Sollte diese Debatte eher intern geführt werden oder muss man versuchen, diese in eine größere Öffentlichkeit zu tragen?

Zunächst intern – und dann, wenn es einen Konsens gibt, damit zum Beispiel durch die UDJ an die Öffentlichkeit, um somit an die Politik heranzutreten.
