This was a really tough drawing for some reason haha. Gal is just too gorgeous to capture easily I suppose! As a coordinator they definitely put a lot of focus on fashion and being cute which carries over to their appeals. They’re kind of a diva as well but tbh so many coordinators are.

Unless it’s a popular pairing or one I see a decent amount of content for I don’t like I don’t usually consider a ship a NOTP if I don’t ship or find it weird. Juri is lucky she is truly my OG fankid. My #1, she was created first before anyone else, so her place in my heart is near and dear. Will never retcon.

Because when I tell you that had I made this verse now, Volo/Lucas would, without question, be the endgame I would go with, no matter how messy and complicated it ended up being.

I've maybe said something similar about Lance/Ethan before when compared to Silver/Ethan, but this isn't even that situation. That was more of an "I like them equally" situation and I was shocked how a side ship (Lance/Ethan) I made on a whim for narrative reasons could rise up to rival the ship (Silver/Ethan) I was always most invested it. Thus why I've slowly swung back the other direction and am more invested in giving Silver the happy ending.

But VoloRei compared to Barry/Lucas? That's no contest. VoloRei is like, specifically designed to be what I like most in a ship. There's a reason Isshu trumps all other Pokemon ships for me, and it's related to hero/villain dynamics being what I like most in a ship. Which even Isshu is tame as far as hero/villain ships go, but they still count. Hero/rival is the similar but very tame substitute that scratches a similar itch, but when I can get the real thing...

Anyway, Clingy is truly the centerpiece this verse was built around so it's not possible to retcon it. Whatever bone of the skeleton Clingy is is too important. Pull it and the whole thing collapses. But this is why I'm going extra insane about VoloRei at the moment and it probably won't stop. So like, fair warning.

Like it's bad enough I've pondered "what if Barry were to die at some point tho..." which I'm not doing. But if I've started down that line of thought...

Legit I'm over here like "It's okay Juri and Colm, I may ship your mama more with another man than with your actual papa, but I promise I won't break up your family." Being the OG fankids is all that's stopping me.

Fankid Week Day 5: Relationships/Romances

Being the third wheel in your traveling group sure is tough...

Introducing the Sequel Trio! These three are the protagonists of the second part of the L&L story, picking up where Emery, Gavin, Renato, and Tipha left off. Essentially they’re the clean up crew for after the big final battle, haha. This pic is probably the best way I could have introduced them since it sets the tone for their dynamic and overall story perfectly.

Morgan (in blue) is Emery’s younger brother and Ash & Paul’s son. He’s an aspiring coordinator who is working to overcome his stage fright to become a top coordinator. While he doesn’t dress as flashily as Emery, his tastes are very similar to hers, which is evident in his contest outfits and appeals, leaning more towards the “emo” side of things rather than “goth-punk” however... it’s certainly a Look, that’s for sure.

Gal (short for Galath, in red) is the baby of the Ethan/Lance/Whitney family and is Lance/Ethan’s child by blood. Like Morgan, they’re a coordinator and a fairly prominent one as well. They first started traveling with the group to mentor Morgan, but the two fairly quickly end up dating. They consider themselves the Leader because they’re two years older than Morgan and Leo despite having no idea what they’re doing most of the time. 

Leo (short for Lionel, in green) is Reggie & Maylene’s youngest and Morgan’s cousin. He and Morgan set out on their journey together, but once Gal joined up... he became the third wheel. He doesn’t mind too much though since he’s got other things to worry about. Like his Prinplup trying to murder him in his sleep. Or how he knows that once he challenges the Elite Four he’s going to have to battle both his mom and his uncle.

They’re kind of a ragtag meme disaster crew but I adore them!!

Penelope, my Johtochampionshipping (Lance x Ethan) fankid, who’s more of a Huntershipping fankid at heart, but anyway...

Lance ends up dying in a ‘tragic accident’ before she’s born, and Silver eventually ends up becoming her stepparent.  Unlike her older brother who can’t stand him, Penel actually does get along with Silver and comes to view him as her father.  This is probably helped by the fact all she knows of Lance comes from stories she hears while growing up, whereas her brother, Hale, actually does remember Lance to some extent.

Penel is one of the few fankids that doesn’t have any traveling companions.  She occasionally joins up with her cousin, Ina, who she considers her best friend, but for the most part travels as a solitary trainer.

What's up with Siegfried? I see him pop up a lot in posts, and I'd love to learn more about him.

So the issue with Sieg is he falls into the category of a character who’s too baby for me to think about, since developing him means I inevitably have to decide what other fankids are doing once they’re in their 30 (which like, I’ve done, but that doesn’t mean I want to flood the blog with fangrandkids). He’s also more just an extension of his parents' story than having much of a story in his own regard. A byproduct of me thinking about how things would go with Lance and Ethan once they’re finally reunited post Team Cross stuff. Baby that was born while the two were living quietly on some isolated route in Johto while Lance is slowly recovering.  

Unlike Civello though (the Silver/Archer son) who also only exists as a byproduct of me continuing his parents story, Siegfried has a bit more development since I’ve thought about him in What-If AUs.  AUs where the Team Cross thing never happened to Lance and he and Ethan continued their relationship together (Civello doesn’t get this treatment since I really can’t see Silver getting with Archer barring the very specific scenario that popped up in Mainverse without me realizing it was going that direction. So he doesn’t exist in any other AUs I’ve thought about). So Sieg has some actual development because of these AUs, and I can kind of extrapolate what I would do with him if I were to develop him in MainVerse.

In What-If AUs, I see him as being about 3-4 years younger than Penel, just to follow the age gap between Hale and Penel. Since Lance and Ethan were deliberate in how they were spacing their children. He’s very much the coddled baby of the family, being the only omega sibling adding to this. Sieg is more like Ethan than his two older siblings, mostly since I wanted him to contrast how Hale and Penel have more “harsh” personalities. Friendly and energetic. He’s also not very battle oriented, being more of a Pokemon breeder. But in Blackthorn, this mostly just means he looks after some of the baby dragon Pokemon. Tends to the Dragon’s Den and the Pokemon there once he’s a bit older. Not necessarily a shrine maiden per se, but that’s kind of the vibe I have for him once he’s older. Tends to the Dragon Shrine alongside looking after some of the Pokemon there.  He’s not likely to inherit any major position in the clan but still would have his role to play in things.  There would likely also be talk of an arranged marriage for him with someone prominent in the clan, but whether this would come to anything or not I never decided.  But Lance (and Ethan by extension) tends to go along with what the clan heads want in AUs where nothing happens to Lance, since Lance is prone to compromising with the elders even on things he disagrees with. Mostly since this contrasts how Clair reacts in Mainverse after her cousin “dies” and she takes over. She very much does not compromise with the elders on things she disagrees with and is a lot more bullheaded, since how they treat Ethan after the fact rubs her the wrong way (I’m getting off topic tho, so back to Sieg).

In Mainverse, as Lance doesn’t return to Blackthorn past the occasional visit, none of the above applies.  Past the part about Sieg being a friendly and energetic person.  He ends up sheltered early on since his parents are living more isolated, although Ethan takes him out to visit various people and places frequently enough it’s not like he never sees anyone else. Bonds a lot with the Pokemon in the route the family lives in, very friend to all woodland creatures esque. While I never decided on where exactly they settle, I was picturing it as one of the earlier routes closer to New Bark, so the Pokemon there are the gentler types. But back to the part about why I don’t develop him much, since Hale is roughly 20 years older than him, any amount of development for Sieg means I gotta decide what Hale and Penel are up to.  And while I have vague ideas what that would be (Hale probably eventually takes over as clan head in Blackthorn, he and Casimir marry, they have a kid or two, they shake things up in the clan so the elders that are still around kind of regret pushing for Hale as the next heir) this means I end up thinking about them more than I do Sieg. Since Hale (and now Casimir who is roped into this) have a lot of other characters they’re connected to, I then feel I need to think about all of those characters.  So mostly I just don’t think about Mainverse Sieg very much since there’s other characters I feel I need to develop first during that timeframe.  He’s just chilling as Ethan’s unintentional midlife crisis baby while Lance is dealing with all his PTSD from Team Cross stuff.

One prototype character from Gen 2 who has no information on them but I can use for my own purposes is Gama. Which on one hand, is a bit of a nonsense name, but they’re maybe the prototype dragon type Gym Leader. Hard to guess since nothing exists for them info wise but the name. But I’ve always needed another Blackthorn clan member who takes over the Blackthorn Gym once Clair becomes the Champion. This dude for sure exists, I’ve just never bothered to come up with a name for him (he’s also the same dude the Elders try to set Ethan up with after Lance dies). So sure, he can be Gama!

Admittedly I haven’t thought about him much other than in relation to Ethan. Whereas Lance (and even Clair to a degree) does internalize a lot of the more conservative teachings of his clan, he’s still open to different viewpoints and ways of thinking. Helped by how his travels have broadened his horizons and introduced him to different ways of looking at things. He’s still stubborn deep down (I always think about how the guy resorts to violence when faced with people he deems as evil. That Hyperbeam at the Team Rocket Grunt left an impression), but I think he, when it comes down to it, is a reasonable person. It’s why despite the dodgey aspect of him and Ethan as a couple, I think they could make things work. Lance never wanted to control Ethan or even have them fall into that traditional alpha/omega couple dynamic. He valued how Ethan was capable of being strong and independent. Even if it does lead to some go between with Lance as the mediator between Ethan and the Clan Elders. Ultimately there was tension in the clan about how much free rein Lance gave Ethan.

(There’s tension with Clair/Lyra too but I tend to see it that Clair is viewed as a bit of a lost cause by the elders. She’s the stubborn hard to control one whereas Lance has always been more willing to go along with what they wanted. I don’t want to say he was groomed by them to lead the clan a certain way, but they def raised him with a certain vision in mind on the proper way he should act. And with both of his parents dead, they did have a hand in how he was raised. Clair is the spare heir so had more freedom between the two of them). But Mr. Gama Blackthorn? That guy has bought into a lot more of the clan teachings so while he’s probably a fine enough Gym Leader, would not have been a good husband for Ethan. Controlling type of guy. I do think Clair would have enough influence that she could have mediated things to an extent, had Ethan agreed to marry the guy. But ultimately wouldn’t have gone well. Even when I try to think about a route where Ethan stays with the clan, it seems like Clair and Lyra would eventually stage an intervention at some point and try to get him to take the kids and run. Or even just get him to move in with them? Those two would have to be completely out of the picture for a route where Ethan never leaves (cause he kinda would get trapped in this scenario). Or I guess a less rebellious Clair could tip things that way as well? But even then, if Lyra is around, Lyra won’t stand for it.

Let’s pretend Ethan does somehow stay though. In such a route, I think Hale still hates his stepdad, as that’s a running theme for him. Although it’s probably more justified in this route since his mom is visibly unhappy and even his stepdad is only really looking out for him out of obligation. Hale may be the heir, but Gama would have an obvious preference for any of his own biological children he would have with Ethan. Of which there would for sure be at least one. Alpha son cause I think it would further complicate things with the family and how Gama has a clear favorite.

Gama isn’t a direct cousin of Lance and Clair, but a 2nd/3rd cousin or something from a different family branch. Age wise, he’s right around Ethan’s age. This is purely speculation, but the only information that can maybe be assumed about prototype game Gama is they were possibly a young Gym Leader. Like child/early teens young. This comes from one of the earlier beta sprites for Clair looking like a child (or at least being quite a bit younger than final Clair). And if Gama went on to become Clair, it stands to reason the character might have been meant to be a child prodigy of sorts. So I like the idea of maintaining this which would mean Gama is right around the same age as Ethan. Plus or minus a year or two in either direction (I think it would be funnier if he were a bit younger, but I’m fairly sure that with my timeline being what it is, same age works better).

This probably is also why he’s a bit more stuck in his mindset. Young enough he hasn’t had the time to branch out and expand his world view. Which who knows, maybe Ethan would be able to work with the guy and get him to lighten up by traveling around with him. No reason I couldn’t spin things in a way where they work out for the better. But as they’re never meant to be, no reason to speculate on that. And when I speculate on “what ifs”, it tends to be “bad ends” not alternate “good ends.”

Thinking about Gen 2 always gets me thinking about my boys (Ethan and Silver) and how I’m forever torn on if Ethan/Lance is kinda iffy but ultimately not a big deal in terms of how it would be viewed in universe or if actually, it’s kinda fucked up and even in universe is viewed as such by multiple people (still not by Blackthorn and like half of Johto tho cause they’re pretty deep into the “traditional” mindset of gender roles and such). Like really could go either way in terms of how omegaverse worldbuilding would make that whole thing be viewed (and it being kind of ambiguous was the point for me, as what is omegaverse if not kind of fucked up when examined in how it would likely affect worldbuilding. Although I do lean towards, in Johto at least, the relationship is fine, if unconventional). But regardless, was thinking more on how Silver views the whole thing and why he has extra reason to be angry/feel betrayed about it.

So honestly when I built the initial story for Johto, I forget it was a thing that Silver trains in the Dragon’s Den postgame. So I didn’t factor in the possibility that he might view Clair and/or Lance in a bit of a mentor like role due to training under them. And now PokeMas has been really pushing the Mentor Lance thing so while I’m still kind of iffy on that, there is something to the idea he looks up to the two a bit. Like sure, he’s still tsun about it so will never admit he looks up to them, but deep down he admires them both. Both exemplify strength and seem to be living by their own ideals, not being pushed around by how others think they should live (little does Silver realize…)

I also think Silver’s developing crush on Ethan would be kind of obvious to those around him. Not Ethan, of course, but I can see it being something multiple characters would pick up on (Lyra knows for sure). At the very least, it would be clear that, to Silver, Ethan is someone he cherishes. His closest friend. With how Johto is the more conservative region though, I can also see that factoring in to perhaps some characters wouldn’t actually pick up on the crush. Since, afterall, what’s two omegas being touchy feely with each other other than a really close friendship. Like maybe even for Silver, it takes him a while to realize his own feelings due to both him and Ethan being omegas. Rationalizes that maybe this is what deep omegan friendship feels like? Not like he’s ever had another close friendship to be able to compare his relationship with Ethan to.

So I think it’s hit or miss if Lance and Clair pick up on this. Plus not like Silver is going to get super heart to heart with either (probably lets things slip though. I actually like the idea he confides more in Clair due to both being on the hotheaded side. Would actually rib each other sometimes). Plus Ethan is away from Johto for a while, since I’ve always seen it that he travels for years at some point postgame and then comes back to Johto All Grown Up. And timing wise, it just so happens to coincides with the drama Lance is going through with the elders in Blackthorn.

So yeah, Silver is already struggling/in denial about his feelings for Ethan, but then to learn there’s a whole arranged marriage thing brewing between Lance and Ethan and both parties are genuinely considering going along with it??? Silver is pissed. And feeling betrayed, especially by Lance. While he’s never confided in the man about his feelings for Ethan, subconsciously he would expect Lance to know. And how dare he make a move on the person he has feelings for. Whatever positive feelings Silver might have had for Lance have just been thrown out the window. He’s also appalled Ethan is even considering it. Like not even just because of the age difference, but Ethan even considering an arranged marriage at all is appalling to him. Why would he settle for that when he can make anything he wants of his life. Ethan is so strong, afterall. He doesn’t need to resort to being some omega house-spouse to some alpha just to get by.

But Silver also isn’t originally from Johto. So he doesn’t have that “raised in conservative Johto” mindset influencing him the way it sways how Ethan views the situation (aka nowhere near as harshly as Silver views it). Plus, for all of Team Rocket’s flaws, I’ve always seen it that they’re rather progressive in terms of gender roles. Silver being an omega was never going to be a factor in him one day taking over Team Rocket, had things with the group not gone south. He was always in line as the next heir. So while I can see Silver having a bit of a complex about being an omega (but that’s due to daddy issues more than anything), he wasn’t raised with the mindset it was a setback. Which would factor in to the idea of settling for marrying some alpha in a “traditional bonding ceremony” being extremely off putting to him. Old fashioned and not in a good way.

Which in a sense, makes the fallout with Ethan and Silver all the more tragic. Since had the two stayed close during the initial courtship and early years of Lance and Ethan’s marriage, maybe it would have changed the outcome of things. But also all of this is why I think about how keeping the idea of Ethan and Lance getting back together way down the line seems kind of cruel. To Silver at least. Cause I think he’s the one more in the right in this situation.

Like in the context of omegaverse and how Johto’s culture works in this verse, Lance/Ethan ultimately was fine. They had their ups and downs and omegaverse nonsense was def swaying things, but could have made things work and been happy. But after Lance “dies” and Ethan spends years with Neo Team Rocket and eventually marries Silver, would this not shift his own viewpoint on things? I don’t think he’d come to resent Johto’s culture and would still think of his late husband fondly, but would he not come to see Silver’s side of things more?

I guess it just comes down to whether I want Ethan to be in the wrong or not. Both have an appeal. But since it’s epilogue stuff anyway, don’t have to come to as strong of a decision on the ultimate outcome of that plotline. Can just be the two endings! Which is the True Ending is still up in the air.

On a side note regarding how Silver views Clair, I feel he’s still pissed off at her initially (guilty by association as Lance’s cousin), but he chills out with time. Clair was the one who stood up for Ethan against the Blackthorn Elders after Lance’s death and helped him leave (for those that don’t feel like reading my old posts, essentially the elders wanted to marry off Ethan to another prominent member of the clan to keep him as “part of the family.”). Plus Clair and Lyra’s relationship pisses him off less since wasn’t an arranged marriage situation. Was Clair once again ignoring the elders and marrying someone out of love (if Lyra has questionable tastes in alphas that's on her). So I think those two do reconcile with time and work together to protect the Johto/Kanto regions. Clair as the one in “the light” as the new Champion and Silver in “the shadows” as the head of Neo Rocket.
