THIS WEEK’S EPISODE OF NXTB (Next X-Treme Tumblr Blorbo)

THE JOHNNY LAWRENCE CONCERT

As one of the biggest heels in NXTB and the rest of ABW, Johnny Lawrence (Cobra Kai/The Karate Kid) decided to troll the audience tonight. Instead of wrestling, he held an acoustic guitar “concert” in which he sung “crowd-pleasing” songs such as:

Happy Birthday Maggie Bell, born 12th January 1945 in Glasgow.

Sometimes the music industry and indeed the people who buy the music can be fickle, if ever there was a voice that screams out quality and deserves to be recognised commercially it is that of Maggie Bell’s

Her career began in the mid-60s as the featured singer in several resident dancehall bands. She made her recording debut in 1966, completing two singles with Bobby Kerr under the name Frankie And Johnny. Bell then joined guitarist Leslie Harvey, another veteran of the same circuit, in Power, a hard rock outfit that evolved into Stone The Crows. This earthy, soul-based band, memorable for Harvey’s imaginative playing and Bell’s gutsy, heartfelt vocals, became a highly popular live attraction and helped the singer win several accolades. Bell’s press release at the time insisted that she would loosen her vocal chords by gargling with gravel!

Harvey, who was Bell’s boyfriend at the time, was tragically electrocuted on stage in 1972. The band, still rocked by his death, split up the following year.

Bell, now managed by Peter Grant, embarked on a solo career with Queen Of The Night, which was produced in New York by Jerry Wexler and featured the cream of the city’s session musicians. The anticipated success did not materialize and further releases failed to reverse this trend. The singer did have a minor UK hit with ‘Hazell’ (1978), the theme tune to a popular television series, but ‘Hold Me’, a tongue-in-cheek duet with B.A. Robertson, remains her only other chart entry. Bell subsequently fronted a new group, Midnight Flyer, but this tough, highly underrated singer, at times redolent of Janis Joplin, has been unable to secure a distinctive career and can still be seen on the blues club circuit. Her interpretations of songs such as Free’s ‘Wishing Well’ and Lennon / McCartney’s ‘I Saw Her Standing There’ are excellent. Bell’s greatest asset remains her uncompromisingly foxy voice.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Scott McKenzie, the singer-songwriter best known for his association with John Phillips and the 1967 Summer of Love anthem “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair),” the sonic tract that called 1000s of young people to California.

 

Phillips (who played on the track with The Wrecking Crew) wrote the song to appease authorities concerned that hippies would overrun the Bay Area for the Monterey Pop Festival. Peace and love prevailed. The song has been used in several films and was a theme for the Prague Spring Czech uprising in 1968. That same year, McKenzie’s next Top 40 hit “Like an Old Time Movie” (also written and played by Phillips) segued with McKenzie writing “What About Me” for Anne Murray (her first hit single).

 

Like many artists circa 1960, McKenzie morphed out of doo-wop and became a folkie, joining the New York folk scene that beget The Mamas & The Papas. Phillips initially invited McKenzie to join that group but he declined, saying he didn’t want “the pressure.” Years later McKenzie joined a road version of The Mamas & The Papas in 1986. Concurrently, the Phillips-McKenzie team joined Mike Love and Terry Melcher to create the huge Beach Boys hit “Kokomo.”

 

The evergreen “San Francisco” remains McKenzie’s best-known work (he passed from Guillain-Barre syndrome in 2010). The pitch:

Rinnie wants the politicians to stop ignoring the religious terrorism just because it’s inconvenient. Nathaniel wants to get back home with the cure for his dying queen. Neither anticipated getting stabbed and nearly blown up.

The brutally honest pitch:

Rinnie doesn't want to be bored so she ends up chest deep trying to prove a connection between missing clergy and the terrorists. Her stubbornness contributes to this. Nathaniel and his buddies are stuck in a foreign country because someone wants them stuck there. They just don't know it.

It's a book about group of people who chose themselves. And a goddess who needed a chosen one but couldn't risk sinking too much power into any one person so she had several mini chosen ones who agreed to rise to the challenge.

This is a story of choice. Of choosing to do the right thing despite the obstacles. Of choosing to side with your friends or your family. Choosing your path because it's what you believe and not turning back.
