On this day in 1921, John Severin was born. Severin attended the High School of Music & Art in New York City with Harvey Kurtzman, Will Elder, Al Jaffee and Al Feldstein. He was one of the founding cartoonists of Mad magazine (then a comic book), but of course became more famous as the MVP artist at Cracked, for 45 or so years. Severin could draw anything (though he rarely delved into superheroes) providing art for EC’s war comics, Marvel’s fantasy and monster titles, Sgt. Fury, Warren magazines, countless western comics, and other publications.
