No one speak to me. I watched dinner in America and I will never recover.
Simon and patty are the most romantic thing ever to me (next to Daniel and Armand but that’s a different thing)
THEY MATCHED EACH OTHERS FREAK. Simon never talked down to or like patty was stupid. He explained things in his own brash as fuck way, but he never took that ‘oh she’s a little slower then others’ tone. Because yeah patty is intellectually disabled, but that doesn’t mean she’s stupid or should be treated like she’s not an adult.
Like her parents circled jobs that didn’t require customer or any personal interaction, she’s an adult but they still infantilize her so much they don’t want her going to a rock show with her friends. Simon sees that yeah she’s a little disabled but she’s not stupid, and he won’t let anyone talk to her like she’s a child.
He actively defends her and yells at others who try it, like with his family, with the track dudes, even when patty herself asks if she’s the R slur, he lovingly aggressively tells her to never speak about herself like that.
Simon sees patty for who she is, who he saw in her poems, the girl who for 2 years has been sending him letters that made him feel seen.
Patty sees Simon for who he is, for the first time both of them have someone who sees them. Who understands them, who matches their freak and isn’t embarrassed or ashamed by them.
I just I love them okay

I don’t know how people keep missing the point in ‘Dinner in America’.
Patty isn’t “weird and quirky” she’s ND. And it’s ok if you don’t like Simon’s character because we’re not really supposed to. The point is that no matter what disability you have or how you are as a person there’s ALWAYS someone out there who’s gonna love you. Simon didn’t water himself down and Patty loved him that way and he made sure to always reassure her and never made her feel “dumb” or too much. They remained the same only now they had each other.
I need more movies like this, it was so fun and comforting. Kyle gallner and Emily skeggs did an amazing job and made the characters feel so real and intimate.
