"Once she'd landed the part, he suggested she watch some classic Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy movies such as Woman Of The Year and Without Love that made much of the sexual frisson between the two actors.
'He thought they'd be useful in understanding the rhythm and pace of a relationship between a male and female lead, and they were...'"
(from this great article in the Daily Mail: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2301099/Doctor-Who-falling-spell-new-assistant-Jenna-Louise-Coleman.html). It's true, the chemistry between Hepburn and Tracy was really compelling, and I can see why Matt Smith suggested it.
Tumblr media
But I'd like to suggest another famous couple that gives me Eleven/Clara vibes--and this couple is English. That's John Steed and Emma Peel, played by Patrick McNee and Diana Rigg. Watch their episodes and you might see a similar vibe going on.
Tumblr media
They definitely tended to play it like there was "something going on" between the two characters, much like Smith and Coleman treated Eleven and Clara's relationship. At least, IMHO. ^_^

News From Yesteryear
June 1, 1933 – 90 YEARS AGO
Excerpt from the Pearl River News
NUDIST GROUP FORM CAMP IN ROCKLAND CO. — People Seek Camp Said to Be Located in Ladentown, N.Y.
In the New York Evening Journal last night a story about nudists of the Eastern States was featured on one of the back sections. To the surprise of many people it said that a colony was to be found in Rockland County, where Thomas L. Farley, brother of Postmaster General James A. Farley is Sheriff.
This caused the question to come into hundreds of minds. “Where is the nudist colony?” Wires were busy and everyone was calling friends in Ladentown. They heard it was out there. People living in Ladentown said “No, it isn’t here, it is in Pomona.” People in Pomona said, “No, it is someplace else.”
The big question was where to find the colony and how to get there.
According to information today, the camp is located in Ladentown section and is under the direction of Herman Soshinski and has been open for the past two weeks. Its exact location is being kept secret but entrance into it is not difficult as long as the seeker obeys the rules or “doing like the Romans do” when they arrive.
There are about 100 members in the local colony. Most of them are from New York City. It is said, however, that there are about 24 nudists of Rockland County who are either attending the league now or are on the lookout for it.
The Rockland County colony is under the direction of the American Gymnosophical Association, a national organization. Three years ago the camp was located in Ladentown in different quarters, it was raided by Sheriff John McNee. The people arrested were brought before Judge Pincus Margulies on charges of disorderly conduct and were each fined $5.
The camp was discontinued for the year and in 1931 and 1932 was located in Ironian [sic], N.J. This year Leader Soshinski brought his flock back to Rockland County in a different location. They have a swimming pool and grounds where they can carry on athletic activities and other body exercises.
It could not be learned whether they were living in cabins or tents, but it was said that they are well housed. Whether there will be an effort made to raid the camp this year is not known. Efforts are being made to keep the location as secret as possible in order that those in the camp can get the most out of the warm weather and sunshine for the remainder of the summer if possible.

Sense and Sensibility, at Arts Club Brings Today's Sensibilities to Jane Austen
On stage at the Arts Club Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage, until April 2, 2023, Sense and Sensibility by writer Kate Hamill adds a bit of modern perspective to the Jane Austen classic tale of love, marriage, wits and class. Gossip, intrigue, scandal, impropriety are at the forefront of director Rachel Peake's production, mixed with the typical emotional restraint of Regency England. First greeted by Shizuka Kai's creative set, made up of embroidery hoops highlights the expectations, and burden, imposed upon ladies of English society. Sarah Cantuba, Nyiri Karakas, Amanda Sum, and Janet Gigliotti (l-r) in Sense and Sensibility, 2023: set design by Shizuka Kai; costume design by Jacqueline Firkins; lighting design by Itai Erdal; photo by Moonrider Productions for the Arts Club Theatre Company As the story begins, Costume Designer Jacqueline Firkins wraps the villagers in garments printed with handwritten notes, as their loose tongues catch us up to the plight of the Dashwoods; recently widowed, Mrs Dashwood and her three daughters Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret, who are being put out of their home by the new heir, their half-brother and his snob of a wife. Reflecting today's insatiable appetite for scandal and intrigue, the 'gossips' cleverly appear throughout the play to help move the story along, without them, the play would be even longer than its 2.5 hours. The scene changes are also creatively fast-paced as the company rolls and slides the set furniture along with the performers between locations. The subject of much of the gossips gaze centers upon Elinor and Marianne, played by Nyiri Karakas and Amanda Sum respectively. The only two cast members to not appear as more than one character, Karakas and Sum carry the heavy burden of Elinor and Marianne's emotional and turbulent love lives. Karakas brings the level-headed, propriety expected of elder-sister Elinor, who pines for the love of unavailable Edward Ferrars (Kamyar Pazandeh). Meanwhile Sum's Marianne, a modern thinking girl who cares little for what's expected of her, is an emotional roller-coaster torn between two suitors; the vibrant, and unscrupulous Willoughby (Jay Clift) and staid, honourable Colonel Brandon (Abraham Asto). Aided and abetted though their trials and tribulations; Sarah Cantuba as younger sister Margaret Dashwood, Janet Gigliotti as Mrs Dashwood, as well Andrew McNee as cousin Sir John Middleton, Emma Slipp as his drunken wife, and Nora McLellan as his meddling, mother-in-law Mrs. Jennings. With a cast filled with many actors so skilled at comedy, their delivery and timing keep the play from being weighed down by the lovelorn, balancing laughter along with the wails of heartbreak. While Sense and Sensibility is long, the creative direction and precisely choreographed set changes keep up a quick pace, sure to appeal to those who enjoy a period drama (with some scene-stealing comedy). Sense and Sensibility plays at The Arts Club Theatre Company's Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage, 2750 Granville Street, until April 2, 2023. Details and tickets online at artsclub.com

It saddens me that in our culture, a man who has one marriage and is devoted to his wife is looked upon by some as weird while another man, one who openly admits in his autobiography to compulsive infidelities can be seen as a role model.
Patrick McGoohan was happily married for 58 years. I find that inspiring. Many other actors of his time made their relationships a low priority. One actor I can think of off hand married three times, his sexual predilections leading to divorces. McGoohan was willing to be seen as odd. He didn’t care, and in the end, he lived in a marriage of strength and depth. I find that uplifting.
Resistance to kissing a woman who is not your wife is not being “weirdly scared” of women. It is, in fact, a natural reaction. I wouldn’t want to kiss any man besides my husband and I wouldn’t want a job that forced me to do so. But what if I liked my job? As an actor, there are many roles you can perform that don’t include love scenes and I think McGoohan’s critical accolades would attest to that.

Steed & Mrs. Peel make a cameo in a 1988 issue of “Superman”. Byrne’s likeness of Patrick McNee isn’t quite there, but that’s a damn good Diana Rigg. I bought the issue when it came out, but I hadn’t seen “The Avengers” at the time and so didn’t think anything about the characters.

I learned from Alan McNee's book The Cockney Who Sold the Alps: Albert Smith and the Ascent of Mont Blanc that Albert Smith and the cartoonist John Leech were old friends who knew each other from their days in medical school, and Smith called Leech "Jack"—which summoned Garrick Club resident mean girl Douglas Jerrold, who snarked: "Leech, how long is it necessary for a man to know you before he may call you Jack?"
There's just something really funny about calling your old friend Jack, and this bitch swoops in like "um his name is LEECH >:("
Victorian etiquette notwithstanding, if I was John Leech I think I would also want to be addressed as Jack instead of LEECH.
