chapter 41

warnings: swearing, pregnant reader, past homophobia and transphobia from Dan
AN: since the last few episodes haven’t sparked any ideas, here’s one from a rewatch
Dan and I had returned to work a few weeks later, glad to be rid of the smell. We had to come back into the city anyway for another mandatory check up. Carrying the new ultrasound print out, I headed towards Abby’s chambers. I smiled as she ushered me in.
“hey.” I said, handing her the print out. “Brought you the new one.”
“Thanks!” She said. “Oddly enough, I do feel like this is my sibling. The way Dan and I go at it sometimes.” I nodded as I sat down. “So glad to be back in the city?”
“a bit.” I shrugged. “I mean like Dan says, Brooklyn always felt a bit like an escape room.” Abby laughed and shook her head.
“Of course he would.” She said. “Any thought about what you want?”
“don’t tell Dan but I think he’d be an amazing girl dad.” I said softly, rubbing my stomach. “He doesn’t care of course. Long as it’s healthy. And I agree. But deep down, I want him to have a little girl of his own.” Abby smiled at me before Julianne came in.
“Oh. I’m sorry.” She said, glancing at the two of us. “Am i interrupting something?” I shook my head as I got up.
“no not at all.” I said, smiling at her. “I was just leaving.” I waved her protests off as I headed towards the cafeteria.
“(Y/N)!” Dan called, making me turn with a smile. He came over and kissed me softly before looping my arm through his. “I take it she liked it.” I nodded.
“I think she’s already fitting right in to the role of a big sister.” I said as I laid my head on his arm. Dan hummed before pressing a kiss to my head.
“Dan?” I furrowed my eyebrows as I looked up at him. “Dan fielding?”
“Charlene?” Dan asked, turning around and looking at the woman walking towards us. He broke into a smile and walked over to hug her. “It’s been years. Holy shit you look good.” He held her at arms length as he looked her over.
“look at you!” Charlene laughed. “A beard. Really?” Dan rolled his eyes as he wrapped an arm around her to walk her over to me. “It doesn’t suit you at all.”
“say what you want but my spouse likes it.” Dan winked at me and I felt my face heat up before I looked away. “(Y/N), this is my friend from college. Charlene.” I took her offered hand and smiled at her.
“You must have really had a hard time with this one.” I said, watching as Charlene gave Dan a knowing look.
“I’ll say. I could barely keep up with him.” Charlene teased. Dan turned red and rubbed the back of his neck.
“don’t. They’ll get the wrong idea.” Dan said, playfully glaring at Charlene.
“what? It’s true.” She said, putting her hand on his arm.
“Charlene. Im serious. They don’t know.” Dan groaned. I fixed him with a look.
“don’t know what?” I asked, raising an eyebrow at him. Dan ran a hand down his face.
“just tell them would you?” He muttered, glancing at Charlene. “I say it I’m gonna come across as an asshole.”
“oh but you were.” Charlene said, smiling at him. Dan fixed her with a look. “Ok fine. Back in the 80s I had a sex change. He’s still a little bitchy about it sometimes.” Charlene gave Dan a look. “Like now.”
“you’re transgender.” I breathed out, all tension leaving my boy. “You…for fucks sake reinhold!” I smacked his arm and Dan pouted as he rubbed his arm. “Oh be quiet.” He rolled his eyes as he wrapped an arm around me.
“Oh you picked someone who could put up with you and your shit! Finally!” Charlene laughed. Dan smirked.
“second times the charm right?” Dan asked. Charlene looked at him.
“second?” She asked. Dan nodded.
“my first wife died.” Dan said, glancing away for a moment. “I got dragged back here and ever since then…” he shrugged and looked down at me. “This one has me wrapped around their finger.” I snuggled into his side with a smile.
“No I don’t.” I said, mouthing ‘yes I do’ to Charlene who laughed. “Why don’t we head to your office and continue this there?” Dan nodded and held his arm out for Charlene.
“so you two clearly met here.” Charlene said as we walked. “How did it happen though?” Dan chuckled awkwardly.
“well i had a crush on him. Pretty much everyone found out.” I said, hugging Dan to me a little tighter. “We ended up at his apartment one and night.” I glanced up at him as my cheeks heated up.
“one thing led to another.” Dan laughed, rubbing my arm. “And we ended up dating.”
“he had a heart attack and we moved in together.” I said. Charlene stopped right outside dans office.
“you what?!” She cried. “And you didn’t call me to tell me?”
“hey I didn’t think you wanted to know after last time I called you.” Dan said.
“you called days after my husbands funeral and wanted to go out trolling for dates!” Charlene exclaimed. I smacked his arm and Dan sighed.
“ok. And I apologized for that.” Dan said. Charlene nodded, still glaring at him. “But I didn’t think you wanted to hear from me. Even for that.” Charlene ran a hand down her face.
“Dan, you’re an idiot.” She said. Dan shrugged.
“so I’ve been told.” He said. I rolled my eyes as we filed into his office. Dan pulled me down on the couch while Charlene took one of the desk chairs. “I became a judge in New Orleans. We got married. Then came back up here.” Dan leaned his head against mine with a smile.
“and I’m pregnant.” I said as Dan kissed my cheek.
“Dan fielding. About to become a dad.” Charlene said, shaking her head. “I don’t know whether to congratulate you or feel sorry for this kid.”
“hey I’ve been working on all that.” Dan shot back. “And I think, finally, I’m ready for it.”
“I hope you are Dan.” Charlene said, leaning back in her chair. “I hope you are.” I smiled at him before laying my head on his shoulder, drifting off as the two of them caught up. By the time I woke up, Charlene had left.

One Monday in 1987, RTVE (the spanish public TV) premiered right after the evening news, an American sitcom about a bunch of weirdos working in a courtroom. I, at the age of 11, was fascinated by the first episode. I laughed out loud and automatically got hooked on the series. I remember that the first 7 seasons were broadcasted in one go, because here in Spain at that time things were like that: the series arrived late and there was no internet to follow them up to date, you had to wait for the TV stations in our country to buy them and broadcast them. Night Court was the show that turned me into a TV series fan. The one that turned me into a shipper when we still didn't even know what a ship was. The one that introduced me to my first crush. The one that kept me glued to the screen watching the final episode and when I finished it made me feel that it was the end of an era. For many years I felt I was the only one who still remembered this old show, and I looked for a way to get it somehow. But there was no way, it was not released in physical, and with the arrival of streaming platforms, unfortunately it was not available on any of them either. It has taken me 35 years to see it released on DVD and finally have it on my shelf. Since the beginning of this year I have been watching it again, from the first episode, little by little, at my own pace, and sharing in social media the impressions of the 48 year old Pili and the memories of the 11 year old Pili. But I admit that what makes me happiest about all this all are two things: that Night Court has aged beautifully and much better than I expected, and that there are more fans of this show here on the internet than I ever imagined. I know the new series (wich I'm loving, too) has a lot of blame for that, and I welcome and embrace all of this. So, my inner child is really extatic and I'm very happy to see so many Dan Fielding fans (and John Larroquette fans, of course)
Love you all, really

Random very rambling Boston Legal finale thoughts bc I’m bored some sorta spoilers obviously
Sometimes I think the writers forget Alan is a widower lol (like that scene earlier in 5x09 when he says "I was lucky enough to stave off the evil that so ages men... marriage.") but then 5x12 he says "I always thought, if I were to get married again..." so. I guess they remembered !
I'd always pictured Alan coming from a relatively well-off family, in large part bc of those episodes of The Practice season 8 where he goes back to his hometown of Dedham and his best friend is from a wealthy family, wealthy neighborhood, and also his general tastes and almost patrician attitude and things. But after noticing that line from the Thanksgiving episode—"I grew up in a very estranged, unhappy house. Most Thanksgivings my mother spent serving dinner in other people's homes"—which makes it clear they were not rich and perhaps the opposite? But nevertheless, keeping that fact in mind when Alan says he's always dreamt of opening a legal aid firm to help poor people who can't afford it...... sweet man. He’s done so much good and he’s only getting started
On a similar-ish note. Something about Alan remembering everything that’s ever happened to him—every wrong, every pain, every cruel word from his father, every time he was used. He’s been cursed with a steel-trap memory, it’s why he keeps people at arms length. But now that’s the one thing his best friend is losing, his mind. And as Denny’s legal partner and eventual caretaker, Alan’s curse becomes a blessing—he can remember for both of them. He’ll always be there to remember everything Denny forgets, to reassure him for the rest of his life. Ohhh man. Soulmates.
Still waiting for John Larroquette to share an autobiography someday because I would loveeee to hear his thoughts on the show generally/working with James specifically. On Night Court in the 80s, John and Richard Moll had some issues working together for the very same reasons I imagine John and James would not exactly mesh (work style/approach to acting)... but blegal is a much different show in style and format that I thiiiiink would negate some of those potential problems. But fascinated to hear how they got on!
How it feels thinking 100x harder about these TV lawyers than the writers did. Specifically being so mad about Alan Shore I want to analyze him like a bug I love him so deeply he’s such a wonderfully complicated character—while knowing it was just James’ day job for a couple years ago and probably means nothing to him on any deeper level and he hasn’t thought about him since 2008:

Chapter 39
18+ MINORS AND THOSE WITHOUT AGE IN BIO DNI
tags: @illiana-mystery, @iobsessoverfictionalmen, @plush4bunny, @stark-ironman
warnings: swearing, pregnant reader, spoilers for season 3 episode 2
Abby stood in front of Dan and Jake, envelope in her hands. Dan kept glancing over at me, hands flexing as he tried to destress without me next to him. Jake was glancing nervously at Dan.
“we have two options. I can give you the papers and you can read them yourselves. Or I can read them.” Abby said, playing with the papers in her hand. Gurgs cleared her throat as she entered the room. “Third option. Gurgs reads the report.”
“I always wanted to be a 90s game show host.” She said, smiling at me as I nervously rubbed my stomach. I took a deep breath before looking over at Dan again. “The results are in. Dan fielding you…” gurgs struggled to pull the paper out. Abby got it out and frowned.
“you do not have a daughter. Ah nuggets.” She slumped, looking at Dan. “The lab must have mixed up my dna and Jake’s.” She sighed as he got up to hug her. “Well at least that confirms you’re not my brother.” Jake made a face before she kissed him. “I’ll explain later.” Dan sighed as he made his way to me. He kissed my head before sitting down next to me.
“so now what?” I asked, looking over at Abby.
“I can send this down to the crime lab and we’ll have results in 48 hours.” Gurgs offered. Dan and Jake nodded, prompting gurgs to fill out an evidence bag.
“and I’m out.” Dan said, helping me up before wrapping an arm around my shoulders. “We have some things we need to do.” He led me out of the office and down the hall. “I honestly don’t know how I feel about this.” He admitted as we headed to his office. “Having a baby is one thing. Jake’s a full grown adult.” I nodded.
“It must be shocking to say the least. I know it has been for me.” I said, squeezing dans waist. “And I’m sure it’s slightly killing you that you weren’t there when he was a kid.”
“a little yeah.” Dan admitted as we sat on his couch. “But honestly, I don’t care. Because I’m going to have all that soon anyway. If I am his father…” Dan shrugged. “I’ll do my best. I won’t just be a deadbeat. But I don’t think I am. Despite everything, I was safe. I took precautions.”
“you were the one making sure we didn’t have any happy little accidents before we decided on this.” I reminded him. Dan nodded. “Look whatever happens, I stand by you. I took that vow of no matter what. It’s just a lot to take in.” Dan kissed my head.
“thank you.” He whispered. “Is it bad I just want to hide in here until all of this blows over?”
“I was going to suggest taking the next few days off.” I said, cupping his cheek. Dan leaned into it and sighed. “This is bound to impact you as a lawyer. And it would be a little easier to go to that appointment with me tomorrow.” Dan hummed before kissing me.
“or we could cancel the appointment and spend the whole day in bed.” He murmured, hand slipping over my hip to pull me closer. I chuckled as I gently pushed on his chest.
“you know we can’t cancel.” I reminded him. “But afterwards I don’t see any reason not to.” Dan hummed happily before kissing me again.
“which appointment is it?” He asked. I leaned against him with a sigh.
“it’s the big one.” I said, frowning. “Blood tests. Medical history for both of us. But the doctor did say at the end of all of it, we’ll be able to hear the baby’s heartbeat.” Dan bit his lip.
“that’s going to be strange.” He mused, kissing my forehead. I nodded. “Yeah. Let’s just stay in bed after all that.” I giggled as I looked up at him. His hand was hovering over my stomach. “How strange is it that I can’t wait until you start to show? Not in a you’re going to be hot with a baby bump thing, even though you are.” I laughed as Dan pulled me closer. “But in a we did it kind of way.”
“no i feel the same way.” I said, cupping his cheek again. I ran my fingers through his beard and Dan made a noise. “We tried for so long and finally…” Dan nodded.
“yeah.” He breathed out before standing up. Offering me his hand, he pulled me up. “Let’s go home.” The next morning, I woke up to a text from Abby.
“well fuck.” I groaned. Dan hummed, pressing his face into the back of my neck.
“what?” He groaned as I pulled away to answer my phone. I tapped away at the screen for a few minutes before tossing it back on the nightstand. Dan pulled me back against him and buried his face into the crook of my neck. “What’s wrong?”
“we need to go into work tonight.” I sighed as I reached up to card my fingers through his hair. “The results came in early.” Dan groaned. “Yeah I know.”
“I’m kind of at the point I don’t want to know.” He grumbled. I nodded.
“Jake does though. And he deserves to know who his father is.” I whispered. Dan sighed. “Just think about it for a second. How do you think our kid would feel if they didn’t get to know you? Be around you?” Dans hand stretched out over my stomach and I had to fight the urge to smile.
“shut the fuck up.” He muttered. A kiss was pressed to my shoulder as Dan got up. “I guess it’s time to get up and get ready for that appointment.” I rolled over onto my back, the blanket falling down off my shoulders. Dan leaned against the dresser as he looked me over.
“the appointment isn’t until noon.” I said. Dan smirked at me before coming over and scooping me out of bed.
“I know. But when you look like that…” he started towards the bathroom, making me laugh as he kicked the door closed. Later that night, I practically dragged Dan into Abby’s chambers.
“Abby, before the whole are they aren’t they thing…” I said as I pulled my phone out of my pocket. “Listen.” I pulled up the video and pressed play. The sound of the baby’s heartbeat filled the room. Dan squeezed my shoulder before moving to sit down on the couch. Abby teared up, hugging me tightly.
“no one deserves it more than you two.” She whispered. I smiled at her as I wiped my own tears away after stopping the video. I sat down at the table and waited for Jake. When he came in, Abby handed him the paper. “I think this time it should be the two of you who find out first.” Abby sat down next to me and squeezed my hand. The two men read the paper before looking at each other.
“we’re not related.” Jake said quietly. I bit my lip as I looked at Dan.
“We’re just two unrelated me who went tie shopping.” Dan muttered. He glanced at Jake. “And shared an ice cream.” I giggled into my hand as Jake got up. Abby followed him and I went to sit next to Dan.
“so that’s where you disappeared to.” I said, putting my hand on his leg. Dan nodded. “It was kind of nice wasn’t it?”
“yeah.” Dan sighed. “I liked it more than I thought I would. Being a dad.” He leaned over towards me, leaning against me. “It felt like a bit of a practice run for nine months from now. Well…eighteen years from now. Give or take.” I smiled at him as he laid his head on my shoulder. I kissed the top of his head as I hugged his arm.
“yeah.” I agreed. “And you know what?” He looked up at me. “You’re gonna be a great dad. And our little one is insanely lucky to have you.”

Rebootquels
If it feels like you’re getting a lot of the same these days in broadcast and streamed entertainment, you are. Studios are consciously digging into their licensed properties and rebooting them to various degrees of success. But a few have really surprised and proven that while there are a limited number of plots, good writers can make their stories sing.
Quantum Leap
This has been the most surprising of the reboots. It manages to embrace the social Pollyanna of the original show, but layers in today’s TV sensibilities. It even has multiple plots and a great arc to the first season that both fully resolves and leaves it open for going forward on its own terms.
Raymond Lee (Top Gun: Maverick) takes on the lead of our lost and forgetful leaper. But unlike the original series, we have a complete view of the control room and a collection of other characters and stories to follow in addition to him. Caitlin Bassett brings her real-life military background to bear on the series, while Mason Alexander Park (The Sandman, Cowboy Bebop), Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), and Nanrisa Lee fill out the rest of the homebased crew. If you enjoyed the original series, you’ll love this one. It takes the same ideas and expands on them in very unexpected ways, building a more complete world and self-perpetuating adventure.
Winchesters
A solid and clever hand-off from Supernatural. And it even resolves some of my frustrations with the end of that long-running series. It is distinctly aimed at a younger audience and has much more of a Scooby gang vibe than the earlier series, but the cast work well together and the snarky dialogue keeps it all rolling nicely. Drake Rodger (The In Between) and Meg Donnelly are the core story we know (Sam and Dean’s parents as young adults). They aren’t exactly what you might have imagined from the original show, but they are close enough and work well together. Backed up by Nida Khurshid and Jojo Fleites, the foursome are an entertaining group of monster hunters…all with demons of their own. Demetria McKinney (Motherland: Fort Salem) and Bianca Kajlich add a little returning adult perspective throughout the series, but the focus is really on the core of younger players.
There are, of course, many cameos and nods to the original series, but never too heavy and, in the case of this first season, just enough to give it legs. It isn’t brilliant, but neither was Supernatural at the start. This prequel has enough gas to find its own way and travel forward. It has even learned the most important lesson and added humor from the start.
Fantasy Island
Now in its Sophomore year, this show is proving it can change and shift to keep it vibrant. It is still light fare, but it remains fun and with complicated relationships and rules. And, to its credit, it got me to come back, which I didn’t think was going to happen. Is it overly simple at times, sure…but it is Fantasy Island after all, not Reality Island. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t feel absurd at times, but the quick resolutions are built into the idea. Much like Quantum Leap, the shift of the show to “behind the scenes” of the main action is an interesting and compelling change. For generally light fare at the end of an evening, it does just fine.
Night Court
This is the least interesting of the reboots. It does less with the material and veers less from its progenitor. It doesn’t make it unentertaining. Heck, a 22 min bit of fluff, especially with John Larroquette (The Librarians) returning as a nicely evolved Dan Fielding in the mix, can certainly fill a bit of an evening. But Melissa Rauch is no Harry Anderson, and the crew as a whole isn’t quite the ensemble it needs to be yet. It may still get there, but it isn’t much different from the the first series, and even with some of the good bones to work from, it still doesn’t know quite how to land the humor the way the old show always could. I’ll still give it some time, but it isn’t top on my list on any night yet.

the host of one of my favorite podcasts is the son of actor John Larroquette, who did the voiceover for the intro to the original texas chainsaw movie and like. once as a teenager him and his friends dropped acid and decided to watch it but he didnt realize his dad had done the opening voiceover so when he heard it he got really weirded out and confused lol
I cannot imagine what it would be like to just have dropped a ton of acid with your friends and then to suddenly hear the disembodied voice of your father narrating that on this night a bunch of teens got murdered

Feeling real poopy today so I am pirating The 10th Kingdom. It was my go to sick day show as a kid. Fingers crossed it hold up. (partly why I haven't revisited it before now is I couldn't deal with it turning out to be full of Issues and knowing I internalized all of it. this is a show my grandmother introduced me to and we have been no contact for a long time. I'm sure you can infer the rest.)
Anyways the intro is so much better then I remember, it's like watching scholastic book sale be imagined.
I remembered the protagonist being much younger, oh God im so glad they purposefully chose an adult with a young face. I was worried about the future romance plot.
Oh hey it's young John Larroquette. No wonder I love this.
The invisible person still looks like the cover art for the best book at an early 2000s scholastic book fair. (I may just put these on a pedestal as I only got new books once a year (I now realise it's when my moms scholarship money probably came in, bless her) so I would try spend every free moment looking, touching, wishing it wasn't against the rules to read just the first chapter)

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
Tumblr media
I know these words get tossed around often but I mean it when I say The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is one of the scariest films ever made. Even if you don’t agree, its influence on the horror genre is undeniable.
Sally Hardesty (Marilyn Burns), her paraplegic brother Franklin (Paul A. Partain) and their friends Jerry (Allen Danziger), Kirk (William Vail), and Pam (Teri McMinn) are travelling by van through the countryside to visit an old family home. After encountering a disturbed hitchhicker (Edwin Neal), they cross paths with a family of cannibals.
Immediately striking is the picture’s knack for feeling more documentary than fiction. The conversations between the young adults are innane and they speak over each other like normal friends do. Aside from the news-like voice over (by John Larroquette) at the beginning, little about what you see foreshadows what’s coming. When characters die, the violence is brief, almost as if the cameraman is eager to leave the scene of a real-life crime. When the film’s most memorable character, Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen), appears, it’s out of nowhere and shocking. At any point, you’re never quite sure who the main character is and therefore, you never know quite when the picture will end. Similarly, there are no character arcs or typical “film-y” conventions. Many of the most frightening and shocking scenes happen during the day, adding extra credibility to this tale of horror.
These elements combined make this a living nightmare. The violence is often left to your imagination. You see just enough to know you don't want to see more. It’s a nearly overwhelmingly bleak film, particularly when the cannibals overwhelm the heroes and laugh about the fact that they’ve done this before and plan on doing this again. While many horror films play up the morbid humor inherent to a killer picking people off one by one in increasingly gruesome ways, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre piles on the dread relentlessly. A prolonged scene has Sally running from the chainsaw-wielding maniac, screaming at the top of her lungs. It just keeps going and going. You wonder when it’s going to stop because it makes you uncomfortable. But that’s the thing. You’re uncomfortable because you can’t do anything about it and you know, deep down, that no one is coming to save her from those dark woods. It’s traumatizing and gives a double-meaning to the picture’s tagline “Who will survive, and what will be left of them”?
By the time your mind comes to grips with what’s just happened, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre has already moved on. You’re never given the footing necessary to recover from what you see. Just thinking about the film's final scene gives me chills. The use of music, the camera work, the lightning, the simple but effective scares and the realistic presentation make this 1974 film still terrifying today. (On Blu-ray, October 26, 2018)
