“May all your ups and downs come only in the bedroom. To y/n and Dawson Mercer’s!” John raises his glass of champagne with a stupid grin on his face. You giggle at his words hiding your face in Dawson’s shirt, his chest vibrating with laughter.

“Asshole!” he shakes his head before he leans down to pepper your forehead with loving kisses.

“Thank you, John,” You smile at him, sending him a wink. “And don’t worry, the ups and downs will be only in our bedroom, perhaps on our couch.” Another giggle leaves your mouth, while others start to laugh at your comment, your parent shaking their heads in embarrassment. You send them an apologetic smile when they look up at you.

“Okay, so, ehm. It’s my turn to say a toast,” All eyes are on Dawson as he slowly stands from his seat, the glass of champagne already in his hands. Dawson looks over at your DJ nodding at him. The melody of your favorite song sounds through the reception.

Confusion is written all over your face as your eyes flicker between you and the DJ. Your jaw drops when you hear Dawson start singing the son, his eyes locked with yours.

Oh, her eyes, her eyes Make the stars look like they're not shinin' Her hair, her hair Falls perfectly without her tryin'

You watch him in awe, his voice sounds so perfect, hoarse and raspy, but he sounds so good.

She's so beautiful and I tell her everyday Yeah, I know, I know When I compliment her, she won't believe me And it's so, it's so Sad to think that she don't see what I see

Your cheeks are red from all the attention that’s on you.

But every time she asks me, "Do I look okay?" I say

He yells lightly, earning laughs from everybody except himself. In the next part, you start singing with him, and his teammates stand up walking over to him as they start dancing.

When I see your face There's not a thing that I would change 'Cause you're amazing Just the way you are And when you smile The whole world stops and stares for a while 'Cause girl, you're amazing Just the way you are Yeah

Dawson extends his hand towards you, moving his finger to himself inviting you to dance with him. With a giggle, you stand from your seat and carefully jog to him almost falling in his arms. Laughing you two start dancing in a tight hug as he keeps singing the song you love.

With a soft sigh, you snuggle more into his chest, hearing the smile on his lips in the song. Your hands are wrapped tightly around his torso as he swings you around the dancefloor, his hand resting on your lower back.

“You are so beautiful, y/n,” he says with a big smile on his lips, the microphone he was holding in his hand together with the glass is somewhere on a table.

“You don’t look bad yourself, D.” your hand runs through his hair on the nape of his neck, a fond smile playing on your lips.

“I love you, babes!”

“Yeah, I love you too, you crazy man,” you laugh. “ How did you come up with the idea of singing anyway?”

“Ugh…Jack and I wanted something funny to do on my toast, so he suggested for me to sing,” he smirks down at you, his white teeth on display. “But you like it, right?”

“Yeah, it was funny, and you know I love your voice so…”

“And I love you!”

This item, H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, faced strong opposition in the House Rules Committee. Howard Smith, Chairman of the committee, refused to schedule hearings for the bill. Emanuel Celler, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, attempted to use this discharge petition to move the bill out of committee without holding hearings. The petition failed to gain the required majority of Congress (218 signatures), but forced Chairman Smith to schedule hearings.

thanks so much for this, becca!! sorry it took me so long and that it’s kind of short, i started writing a different version of this and i wound up not liking it so i had to start over 😭. i hope you like it!, though! <3

The kiss comes as a total surprise, when it happens. Not an unwelcome one, certainly, considering all the less-than-platonic thoughts Luke has been secretly having about his teammate for months now, but definitely a surprise.

The two of them are sitting on the couch of Luke and Jack’s apartment, playing a few rounds of Chel and just generally hanging out. It’s just them in the apartment - Jack’s out grocery shopping. It was supposed to be Luke’s turn to do that, actually, but when he’d mentioned earlier that Dawson had texted him asking to hang out Jack said he would do it instead, an offer paired with a wink and an insistence that Luke should be able to spend time with his quote-unquote “future husband”.

Luke had very much appreciated his brother in that moment, but that didn’t mean he hadn’t thrown a pillow at Jack as the older Hughes brother had made his way out of the apartment.

Right now, though, Luke has just finished kicking Dawson’s ass for the third round in a row. As the game ends on the TV screen, Luke throws up his arms and lets out a triumphant crow, quickly followed by a laugh as Dawson groans and slumps dramatically back into the couch cushions.

“Dude,” Dawson whines. “I already know you’re good at this game, you don’t have to, like, humiliate me to prove it.”

Luke laughs again, shorter this time. “Please, you think that was me humiliating you? You should see me play against Jack or John sometime, that’s me humiliating someone.”

He sets his controller on the coffee table, preparing to take a little break and grab a drink from the kitchen, and when he turns over his shoulder to ask Dawson if he wants anything, the other boy is actually pouting. It’s not an expression Luke is used to seeing on his teammate at all, and it’s so silly and endearing all at once that he feels heat bloom in his chest and finds himself unsure whether to laugh or smile fondly.

“Still,” says Dawson, and it takes Luke a second to force his stupid crushing brain to focus on the words and not just the lips they’re coming out of, “you couldn’t’ve let me win once? Spare my poor, fragile ego?”

Luke does laugh now, tilting his head back slightly from the force of it. He closes his eyes, too, without really meaning to, and when he rights the position of his head and opens them again, Dawson is looking at him with a look in his eyes that he can’t exactly place.

Which is kind of weird. But Luke has already promised himself a while ago, when he first realized he actually had a crush on his teammate, that he was going to do his damnedest to act completely normally around Dawson at all times, and he might as well apply that to odd behaviour from Dawson as well. Besides, it isn’t like the unreadable look on Dawson’s face is the kind of look Luke hopes it is, as much as that sucks - he’s long since accepted that the other boy will never return his feelings and he’ll be stuck uselessly pining until he either finds someone else to like or the feelings go away on their own.

With all that in mind, Luke clears his throat a bit, trying to ignore the blush creeping onto his face because Dawson hasn’t stopped staring at him with that look in his eyes, and says as lightheartedly as possible, “C’mon, Merc, you know I don’t let anyone else win. You wanna beat me, you’ve gotta earn it.” He gently bumps Dawson’s knee with his, smiling as normally as he’s able while his cheeks slowly turn the color of a sunrise. “I’m gonna go grab a Gatorade before we play again, you want-”

He doesn’t get to finish his question. Because all of a sudden Dawson’s eyes have gone from unreadable to determined, and he’s sitting forward again, and then he’s leaning over and his lips, those lips that Luke has been dreaming about for longer than he really wants to admit, are on Luke’s, and just like that Luke is being kissed by the boy he’s just finished reminding himself he’ll never be able to have.

For a second or two, Luke’s body turns to ice, and he just sits there like an idiot, completely still. It isn’t until Dawson falters, seeming to fully realize what he’s doing and panic, and his mouth starts to pull away from Luke’s that Luke finally manages to kick himself out of shock and into action. He chases Dawson, pressing his lips firmly back onto the other boy’s, and this time it’s Dawson’s turn to briefly freeze before he starts responding.

And once he does start responding - Jesus, it’s the best kiss Luke’s ever had. Dawson, even though he’s only two years older and can’t have that much more experience, clearly knows what he’s doing, moving his lips near-perfectly in sync with Luke’s and giving just the right amount of gentle pressure. Luke finds his hands wandering up to tangle themselves in the older boy’s hair, and in return he feels one of Dawson’s hands come to rest on his thigh, acting as a brace for his teammate as Dawson pushes himself impossibly closer to him.

When they finally break apart for air, Luke feels like it’s been an eternity and a single instant all at once. They don’t go far from each other, faces still close enough that they’re panting the same air, their noses just barely brushing together. Dawson’s pupils are blown wide, his hair is messy where Luke still has his hands in it, and his lips are kiss-swollen in the same way Luke imagines his own must be. He’s never looked more attractive, and Luke can feel the heat that had spread through his chest earlier growing even further, becoming a raging inferno of something that feels like genuine love as Luke gazes at the beautiful boy he’s just finished kissing.

Still a bit out of breath, Dawson murmurs, “You’re so fucking good-looking when you laugh.”

So that was the look in his eyes, then, and the reason behind it. Luke knows, logically, that they should have an actual conversation now, that they should talk about how long they’ve both been feelings the feelings they clearly share despite how much Luke thought the opposite. They should be responsible young adults and discuss where they go from here, whether they’ll actually enter into a relationship and what that could look like. They should stop, take a moment, and come up with an actual plan.

But Luke’s never really been that good at planning. And despite everything, how much responsibility he already has that most people his age don’t even have to think about, he’s still a twenty-year-old with a beautiful boy in front of him - a boy he’s been fantasizing about kissing for months, who has just given him the best surprise of his life by making that fantasy come true and making it better than he could’ve dreamed.

So right now, Luke decides to wait until a little later to be responsible. Right now, he just smiles as Dawson, so wide he feels like it’s going to split his face, and closes the short gap between their lips.

For Toffoli the writing was on the wall…

It came out that he and the Devils couldn’t come to an agreement on term and as soon as that was known I think it was pretty clear that he wasn’t gonna stay because he was gonna walk at the end of the season anyway, Fitzgerald needed to make sure he wasn’t walking away for nothing and so the trade happened.

Same with Marino unfortunately…

As soon as the Devils were all but confirmed to get not only Pesce but also Dillon and the Kovacevic signing, Marino’s time was up. There just wasn’t any room for him with all those additions. Plus, with Markstrom as the new goalie you needed to build a D core to defend shots that he can’t save and that’s where Marino’s statistical weakness is.

And finally with Holtz…

They’ve been trying to trade Holtz since the Timo Meier trade last season. Holtz was part of that package but the Sharks wanted Fabian Zetterlund and Holtz was also included in the original packages for Markstrom but again Flames wanted Bahl more. So if you’ve been trying to trade someone for over a year…the trade is sadly not a surprise.

I say all this to mean none of that background or writing on the wall exists for Dawson Mercer.

Devils GM has been very vocal about Mercer not being on the trade block. Nashville came asking for him and Fitzgerald said no. He said he won’t include Mercer in any deals.

Plus we don’t have a log jam of forwards like we did with defenseman.

And he pretty definitively said he was done with moves for the off season.

We also have to remember Dawson Mercer’s agent is also the agent of like seventy other hockey players including Matty Beniers so this man is doing negotiations for several unsigned players at once so it may be just a there’s a lot of work to do rather than the numbers or terms being far apart.

I hope we get the announcement soon that he’s signing and we can all stop being anxious!

I hope my response wasn’t rude please let me know if it is I just wanted to provide some context as to why those trades happened and why the Mercer situation is nothing like that.

omfg please you can push back all you want!! that’s why we’re here!! i don’t mind at all, and i love having discussions about trades, player moves, contracts, etc. because it’s interesting to see what other perspectives are out there.

i’m really intrigued that toffoli was expected to go, because i actually was unaware that an agreement couldn’t be reached. all i’d heard was that it was “unexpected,” and i thought that meant he was surprised by the trade, not that it could’ve meant it was unexpected that an agreement couldn’t be reached w someone of his caliber/veteran presence in the league. looking back at it, the latter makes more sense than what i was hearing, so you just cleared a lot up for me! ��� and on holtz… i know he was going. i thought even before/leading up to the trade deadline, he was gonna go before then, but i just hoped that maybe if he’d somehow reached an agreement in the offseason or something happened, or fitz and the team believed things could change with a new coaching staff, etc., but you’re right. they were trying to get rid of him for a long time, and i think because i’d interacted with him so much & gotten to know him as a person and an athlete, i was in major denial lol. i was like no way they’re getting rid of him 🙂‍↔️ things could turn around, but it was loudly obvious he was gonna be leaving, just a matter of when. (same with john, i think after the trade deadline was when people said he’s a good player, but not what we need, and as soon as free agency started, it was inevitable, especially with how large john’s contract was)

okay you brought up kevin and that was an interesting (not shocking, but shocking in that he got us markstrom) trade, so i have to ask you: did you think he’d be in the deal for markstrom? or did you think come free agency we’d use him as a trade bargaining chip for someone else we needed come this season, and someone else would’ve been used for markstrom? i did not expect us getting rid of him for markstrom but definitely welcomed it, because now we have better d-lines. kev was the nicest guy, and a huge guy, but not the strong defense we needed for sure.

and YEAH. i need a mercer announcement soon, but i know that pat brisson is BUSYYYYY right now lmfao, i could not handle his job!!

i’m having fun, please give me more trade and contract analyses of our team because it’s nice to see it from such a technical, straightforward perspective and not the perspectives of reporters or fans or whoever who might have bias. very refreshing, 10/10, no notes. let’s do this again please 😌

:D!!! Here's the Devils' locker room layout for all your fanfic needs!

First off thank you Santagovich because your video singlehandedly confirmed about 60% of this, secondly shout out to exit interviews for giving me more info. Also: this is only for HOME GAMES IN 2022-23. Away has different seating, practices also have different seating, and next year's roster will shake up the locker room as well.

That being said...

Just to the right of a set of doors sits Tomas Tatar. Then, the line goes Yegor Sharangovich, Jack Hughes, Nate Bastian, Timo Meier, Jesper Boqvist before hitting a corner. Turn the corner and you get Miles Wood, Dawson Mercer, Nico Hischier, Ondrej Palat, Mikey McLeod, Jesper Bratt, Erik Haula. To the right of Haula is another corner, this one with a shelf of supplies and a fridge (presumably for Jack's Gato), and after that another door. Jonas Siegenthaler is on the other side of that door, followed by Damon Severson, Kevin Bahl, then John Marino, then a silver panel with NJD on it.

All of this I have confirmed. After is somewhat speculative because I can't find good shots of the back of the locker room.

I believe that after the NJD panel is another set of doors, then an Est 1985 silver panel, then Dougie Hamilton's stall. Dougie looks like he really enjoys his personal space, as his neighbor's stall is empty. I believe that after the empty stall is Brendan Smith, then Ryan Graves, Curtis Lazar, and Luke Hughes. (So the d-corps gets one wall, excepting Lazar who's Luke's father figure lmao). Luke has just about no interviews in front of his stall, making it hard to confirm what's after him. I think there's an empty stall after Luke? But hell if I know.

Then there are the goalies, who have stalls in the order Mackenzie Blackwood, Vitek Vanecek, Akira Schmid. To the left of Blackwood is an empty goalie stall. Siegs's Game 5 Victory Speech makes it look like Akira's sitting on the left side of the doors that Tuna flanks from the right.

Finally, something to note is that the Devils logo is in the middle of the floor with the horns pointing up towards Nico's wall.
