The Prayer and Tears of Jacques Derrida takes its point of departure from Derrida's more recent, sometimes autobiographical writings and closely examines the religious motifs that have emerged in his later works. Men who write with a certain level of foolhardiness make me wanna slam my hands on the table: "Your experience is not universal and if you want to discuss this subject, you need to sit down and stop defining things solely with your perspective."

As I have learned recently, Mr Author, this Love you speak of is not the only definition of God, not the only experience or path to God, and certainly those who are indeed Loveless are not necessarily selfish. I know what aim he's going for as he mentions money and vanity, but for a moment we must look to the material conditions we are wrapped up in. The human condition deserves more open gentleness than this writer has given me this far in the first few pages, but perhaps I, too, am being too rash and foolhardy.

Nietzsche has already pointed out that the ability of an idea to comfort us is no criterion of its truth. Happiness and virtue are no arguments.... Something might be true although at the same time harmful and dangerous in the highest degree; indeed, it could pertain to the fundamental nature of existence that a complete knowledge of it would destroy oneso that the strength of a spirit could be measured by how much 'truth' it could take, more clearly, to what degree it needed it attenuated, veiled, sweetened, blunted, and falsified. It might well be that the most forbidding path of all, the one which only the hardest can endure, is the most honest, the most free from illusion and "concealment."

I suspect that Derrida's "desire of God" goes somewhat in the direction of this double genitive. A doubling back of desire well captured in the advice given to Nathanael in Gide's Nourritures Terrestres: "Que ton desir soit moms une attente qu'une disposition a l'accueil." (Let your desire be less expectation than a readiness to receive.)

Heideggerian metaphysics

‘To be’ or ‘not to be’—what’s the difference?

This question enthralled Martin Heidegger (pictured), who criticised contemporary Western philosophy for mistreating ‘existence’ as an abstraction—a nothing in an age of nihilism. But what was his solution?

Phenomenology

Let’s start with Edmund Husserl, of whom Heidegger was a student. Husserl attempted to ‘ground’ philosophy in the thinking subject. Influenced by Descartes, Kant, and Hume, Husserl described the transcendental ego and framed the essential structures with which conscious phenomena correlate with worldly objects. Heidegger, however, refuted this approach. For how is it determined that we experience ‘things themselves’?

Dasein

Heidegger asked what mode of being the world constituted itself in.

We are not infinite beings: we cannot understand things directly. Language is a logical system that speaks for us: it obscures the manifold meanings through which what-is (being) is predicated. Being, therefore, has to occur indirectly through an entity: Dasein (‘being there’).

Humans manifest being by recognising the question of what it means to be. This comprehension of being is the hidden ground of all of Dasein’s relationships with the world as we seek to make intelligible sense of it.

Fate

Time is an essential concept here—not as clock-time but as a transcendental condition for an awareness of past (disposedness), present (fascination), and future (projection) to emerge. The world changes but by acknowledging history (heritage), realising finitude (lifespan), and anticipating, not merely expecting, destiny (death), we open ourselves up to ‘original truth’; propositional truth cannot be reduced to it. Detached from Dasein’s truth-making—facing possibility’s nothingness—we experience moods such as anxiety.

‘Dasein qua time temporalises its Being’, giving rise to an individualised and authentic self, a being-in-the-world through which projects are engaged, as the world discloses, though never completely, with interpretation (hermeneutics).

Dasein is the way in which we are involved with the world. As philosopher John D. Caputo wrote:

‘The task of philosophy as Heidegger saw it was to rebuild the edifice of ‘metaphysics’ which had thus deteriorated [since Ancient Greece]. Then the very essence and possibility of metaphysics would be laid bare and the question of Being would be retrieved in its pristine vitality’: through Dasein.
