Can Families go on Horseback Safari in Africa?

Africa, if done properly, can make for an unforgettable and fabulous family adventure. We even have several horseback safari options which welcome families and can cater expertly for even very young children.

For families with younger children, South Africa is an excellent and exciting option. With easy travel routes, strong conversion rates with most currencies and wonderful facilities – you can’t go far wrong. In terms of horseback safari; we have two options which work excellently for families.

Horse Riding at Ant’s Hill & Ant’s Nest

The Ant Collection is a stunning reserve with excellent riding, well-behaved horses and a huge variety of game including, giraffe, rhino, buffalo, zebra and many antelopes. The riding is lodge based, meaning you ride out each morning and afternoon before returning to the stunning and luxurious lodge - the perfect blend of lush relaxation and exciting riding!

The properties welcome families and have several confidence-giving gentle ponies ideal for children. The lodges cater for all levels of riding ability, as there are no elephants or lions in the reserve. Therefore, you can all ride out together with complete peace of mind. The lodge also boasts a heap of other non-riding activities which can be found here: Horse Safaris and Non-Riders.

A Trip to Horizon Horseback Adventures

A horse riding holiday at Horizon, nestled in the depths of the stunning Waterberg region, will without doubt be a special experience. Ride out through the wonderful ranch and neighbouring reserves, searching big open plains for game such as zebra, giraffe, hippo, jackal, hartebeest, impala, kudu and baboon.  Again with no Big 5 game, Horizon can cater for any level of riding and often welcome young children to the saddle.

When I visited last year, a family with 2 young children were also staying and enjoying there 6th trip to Horizon! They said that the relaxed atmosphere of Horizon and the wonderfully calm and well-behaved ponies just made such a great environment for their children. They also mentioned the easy travel from the UK – an overnight flight to Johannesburg and then 3.5 hour transfer – was a big plus.

With no set itinerary, the lodge is brilliantly flexible and really goes out of their way to cater for your needs as a family. Sometimes putting on extra and different activities such as playing pony club games, taking your horses for a swim in the dam, playing polo-crosse etc.

Further Travel

As I’ve mentioned, both these options are great and very easy in terms of travel. From Europe you can usually fly directly into Johannessburg and the transfer to both safari destinations is just 3.5 hours.

They are also very good for combining with vehicle safaris or further sightseeing.  Enjoy 5 nights of horse safari before moving on to a neighbouring Big 5 reserve. Here, you can partake in vehicle safari to search for some of those larger African classics – elephants, lions and buffalos.

Or you may even wish to take a short flight down to the beautiful Cape Town.

 So to conclude: The answer is a big fat YES - an African Horse Safari can make a wonderful family adventure.
