Chapter 1
Summary : violet is the sibling of Monica and ross geller, one day her and her other three friends were having coffee at central perk there favorite coffee spot when a wet bride comes tumbling in and changes there life forever.
it was a normal day at the coffee house me working, chandler making jokes, phoebe being quirky, my sister and brother fighting, and joey being.....well joey.
"theres nothing to tell just some guy I work with" Monica says defensively from the couch
"come on, your going out with the guy theres gotta be something wrong with him" joey says
"ok guys give her a break I mean for all we know he could be perfectly normal" I say trying to hide my smile not even believing myself, everyone looks at me for a second and then busts out laughing.
"so does he have a hump, a hump and a hair piece" chandler mocks and monica scoffs.
"wait does he eat chalk? just cause I dont want her to go through what I went through with carl" Phoebe says with sadness, we all just look at her confusedly.
"ok everybody relax this is not even a date, its just two people going out to dinner and not having sex" Monica says look at us seriously
"sounds like a date to me, well unless your joey" I give joey an accusatory look
"hey i dont always have sex on dates"
"yeah sure, you know I room right next to you right?" chandler questions like joeys stupid.
"yeah whatever you both suck" joey says looking at me and chandler sideways.
________________________________________________________________________________
"alright so im back in high school standing in the middle of the cafeteria and I realize I am totally....naked" chandler spit out, the room fills with the sounds of us agreeing that we've all had that dream at some point.
"and I look down and realize there is a phone...there"
"instead of?' I say not wanting to say what I meant in public
"that's right" chandler agrees
'Nope never had that" Joey says coming over and sitting next to me with his coffee In hand
"me either" I say weirded out
"oh and that's not the weirdest past, all of a sudden the phone starts ringing and it turns out its my mother which is very very weird because... she never calls me" chandler says confused
"I dont know if that's more sad or gross" I say look at him turning my head to the side questioningly, I feel joey start laughing from beside me I turn to him and smile I've alway loved his laugh.
________________________________________________________________________________
"so sis where's ross?" I ask.
"I don-" but before she can finish her sentence we hear the coffee house doors open and look over to see a sullen looking ross coming over.
"hi...." ross says looking like a wet puppy from the rain
"oof this guy says hello I want kill myself" joey says I nudge him giving him a shut up look to which he looks down sorrily.
"you ok sweetie" I say holding his hand that was resting on the couch.
"I just feel like someone reached down my throat grabbed my small intestine pulled it out of my mouth and tied it around my neck" he says walking over to were chandler was sitting
"cookie" chandler says raising 3 cookies on a plate up to ross, ross just looks at him
"carol moved her stuff out today" Monica revels well all oh and ah "let me get you some coffee" she continues getting up and going over to the waiter at the front
" oh... ah....oh" Phoebe groans as she starts picking the air around ross.
"no stop...stop cleansing my aura" ross says putting his hands up but she continues "no just leave my aura alone ok" he says with finality which makes phoebe stop.
"ill be fine everyone really ok I hope shell be very happy"
"no you dont" I say obviously.
"no I dont to hell with her she left me" ross says angrily.
"and you never knew she was a lesbian" joey says looking at ross expectantly.
"I always has a suspicion something was up" I say looking at joey.
"true you always said that, see ross your sister knew but not you?" joey smirks at me knowing hell get a rise out of him by saying this.
"no! ok why does everyone keep fixating on that, she didn't know how was I suppose to know" he says waving his hands in font of his face annoyed
"sometimes I wish I was a lesbian" chandler says out of nowhere looking down at his newspaper.
"did I say that out loud?" he finishes concerned about himself I smile at him as Monica comes back over and gives him his coffee.
" alright ross look your feeling a lot of pain right now your angry, your hurting, can I tell you what the answer is?" joey questions but I already know its gonna be a stupid answer.
"strip joints!' he says like its obvious, I wave him off
"come on joey" I say trying to hide my smile at his ridiculousness but he notices and nudges me playfully to which I break and smile fully
"maybe joeys right I mean come on your single have some fun" I say
"see but I dont want to be single I just want to be married again" he says sadly, Monica rubbing his shoulder to try to comfort him, then all of a sudden the doors to the coffee house swing open and busts through a girl in a wet wedding gown, we all look towards her confused and surprised.
"and I want million dollars" candler yells towards the door I scoff laughing looking back towards the girl in white she looks familiar for some reason.
Monica gets up going towards her "Rachel?" she questions.
"oh god Monica hi oh thank god I just went to your building and you weren't there and then this guy with a big hammer sad that you might be here and you are you are!" Rachel rushes out.
"can i get you some coffee" one of my waitress friends say from behind the counter.
"decaf" Monica says walking over with Rachel
"Rachel hey its me violet Monica and Rosses sister" I was hoping she remembered me as we were all kinda best friends at one point.
"vi! omg hey its you, you look so good!" she says coming over and hugging me tightly getting me slightly wet from her dress.
"hey everybody this is Rachel another Lincoln high survivor, this is everybody" I say pointing to everyone
'this is chandler dont mind him he's kinda special" I whisper to her but chandler hears and makes a face at me to which I stick my tongue out back at him.
"this is phoebe she's great weird but great" I say pointing towards phebs to which she smiles sweetly
"and the is joey the playboy of the century" I say smirking at him he just scoffs and smiles at Rachel
'Ignore her" joey says waving at rach
"and ross my brother you remember him right?"
"sure!" she goes to shake his hand but his umbrella pops out making it extremely awkward I smile covering my mouth with my hand going back over to my seat next to joey leaning on him a little this time, feeling a little tired from all the social interaction going on to which he senses right away and leans back so I can get more comfortable. he's always had a way of reading my mind in a sense.
(To be continued) I hope you guys like this chapter! I've loved friends and Joey since I was a kid and just wanted to write about it :)

The one where kayla gets a job (2)
Tumblr media
Kayla walked to the post office with the box of application letters in her arms. She walked proudly around the village. Her head high and her chest wide opened.
"Kayla, wait.", a familiar voice shouted from behind her.
Kayla turned around to see Chandler running up to her.
"Hey Chan", Kayla said smiling and started to walk her way again.
"Do you mind if I come with you?"
"I would love to be accompanied."
"Cool.", Chandler put his hands into his pockets.
They both walked a while without saying anything.
"Is it true? I am not dating material, aren't I?" Chandler opened up.
"You think so? Because of Joey?" Kayla looked at him. He nodded.
"Awe, Chandler. He just wanted to make fun of you. There are plenty of women who would love to date you. You are smart, kind, and funny. You should know Joey by the time. I don't think he wanted to hurt you. He just wanted to be quick-witted. And you must confess, he had to say something after your saying." Kayla stopped to handle the box with on hand, so she could use the other one to pet Chandlers shoulder in emphasis.
"You are right, Kayla. Thank you for your open ear."
"That what friends are for." Kayla smiled, hooking her arm under Chandlers.
"So, do you date someone?"
"Yeah. She is sexy but I think it is more of a fling than something serious."
"That's okay, sometimes a fling is all you need - to stay in tongue practice." Kayla giggled. Chandler nudged her with his elbow in her side.
"I got two answers", Kayla rushed into Central Perk, where her friends were. She squeezed herself onto the couch, where Chandler, Monica, and Joey were seated. Ross was sitting on the chair to her right, Rachel in the armchair, Phoebe right in front of her on the ground.
"I'm so excited." Her hand softly touched the envelopes.
"What are you waiting for? Open it!" Rachel cheered.
Kayla opened the first envelope, reading out loud.
"Dear Ms Tribbiani,
Thank you for your interest in our company and for sending us your job application.
After reviewing the many applications we received for this vacancy, we regret to inform you that we can not consider you as a candidate. Although you are highly qualified, another candidate's profile was even better suited..." Kayla lowered her voice of excitement. She let herself fall into the back of the orange couch.
Her friends all looked at her in a pitying way.
"Ah, no need to be sad. Let's see what the other one says", Kayla said, moving herself back in a more confident pose.
"Dear Ms. Tribbiani,
Thank you for your interest in our company and your application documents, which we have looked through with great interest.
Unfortunately...", Kayla shrinked into the couch once again.
Joey rubbed her back. "I'm sorry. It's hard to receive rejection."
"There are plenty of answers left. If both of the companies don't want you, they don't deserve you either way." Chandler tried to cheer her up.
"I know. And I know that some company will answer positively. I just thought that it would be easier." Kayla moaned.
A few weeks later, Kayla had gotten more feedback letters, none of them being positive. She tried to stay positive, but it was hard to.
"Here's the last one." Joey waved with the letter in his hand.
Kayla set in one of the armchairs, watching TV, disinterested in the words Joey just said.
"Come on Kayla, let's have a look." Chandler said, grabbing a beer out of the fridge.
"I don't want to at the moment. If you want to know about my absolute failure, you can open it." She didn't even turn around the tiniest bit.
"Okay, let's do this." Chandler took the letter from Joey, opened it, and
cleared his throat to read out loud:
"Dear Ms Tribbiani,
Thank you for applying to our company.
After thoroughly reviewing your application, we are happy to inform you that you moved on to the interview stage of your application!" Chandler shouted the last words with a wide smile on his lips.
"What?!", Kayla said in disbelief, turning around to see Chandler and Joey smiling.
"You've heard right, Kayla. You've been accepted." Joey came to her shaking her shoulders while she still sat there in a shock.
"Guys... I've been invited for a job interview. This. Is. GREAT!" Kayla suddenly jumped from her seat right in Joeys arms. After she hugged him firmly, she jumped to Chandler.
"Congratulations, Kayla." He pulled her into the hug.
"I will order a pizza to celebrate!" Kayla grabbed the telefon still in Chandlers arms.
After the trio celebrated with pizza and beer, Kayla called the other ones to tell them about the invitation.
"I did it. I got a job!" Kayla entered Monica's and Rachels appartement.
"Congratulations," Phoebe applaused.
"You gonna make New York a bit better for people in need."
"That's great!" Monica yelled from her room.
"Nearly as great as a new pair of boots", Chandler smirked.
"Sounded better in my head.."
"So, when do you start your job?", Rachel asked.
"I'll start on monday. Work starts at 6:30."
"Make an effort to keep it quiet." Chandler moans.
The friends enjoyed the evening together at Monica's and Rachels. Monica made the best lasagne everyone has ever eaten and Kayla got them a few bottles of wine. After the last sip was taken and the film they've watched ended, the group separated each to their own place.
While Kayla gets herself cosy on the sofa, Joey entered and settled down next to her.
"I am excited for you, but please hear me out; Kayla, I'm worried that this is too early. I know you are resilient and one of the strongest women I know, but I don't want you to push away your grief and the healing your going through. What if you'll lose yourself, while you'll sacrifice your life to others." Joey looked at her in concern.
"Joey... I know you mean it well, but you don't have to worried. Yes, I'm still grieving. And you are absolutely right with me sacrificing my mind and help to others, but I've been on pause for a while now. There has been 4 months since my parents died and almost 2 months since I'm back here. Being here alone, without some purpose there is some much more time to think and grief. And I want to move on. Therefor this must be the next step. I'm thankful for your concern, but at the moment it feels right."
"Okay, buddy. I can understand what you are saying.. But I'm still worried. I'm your big cousin. It's my job to protect you from anything that'll hurt you."
"I know, Joey. Thanks." Kayla took his hand, squeezed it and smiled at him.
"I'm happy to have you by my side."
Joey cracked a smile, held his cousin tight to his side.
"Love you, little one." Joey kissed Kaylas head. "Good night."
"Good night Joey."
Kayla snuggled herself into the blanket and felt a sleep with a smile on her lips due to her happy day.
Chandler set in the kitchen reading the newspaper as the door to the appartement opens and Kayla came in.
"Hey, there is our work-newbie! How was your first day?" he asked her immediately, putting down the newspaper.
Kayla made a noise not really answering the question while throwing her bag on the counter.
"Don't you say?! That's sounds amazing." Chandler overacted.
"It was good. But everything here is so different from what it is in Italy." she moaned from exhaustion.
"I thought that it will be as easy for me as it was back there."
"It's alright to feel overwhelmed on your first day."
"I know... It'll take me a few days to get used to but than it will be fine. There are already enough things I enjoyed. The colleague are great, the kids there are the sweetest, but I want to get everything sorted as soon as possible."
"Good to hear that here is something bringing you joy. I was already afraid that there'll be the next Tribbiani living out of my pocket."
"For sure not!", Kayla smiled.
"Lets go and grab something to eat. A Pizza, a beer and after that some icecream?!" Chandler stood up from the barstool getting his jacket.
"You know me so well.", Kayla laughed grabbing her keys.
"Easy one, you are Joeys female version." Chandler giggled, shutting the door close.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~°~❦~°~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
     “Joey, stop!”
     You jumped towards Joey, trying to retrieve your stolen piece of pie from him, which he was currently holding above his head.
     “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.
     “That pie had my name on it,” you huffed, making another jump for it.
     “I don’t remember seeing a name,” he acted innocent, crumpling up a piece of paper that most definitely had your name on it.
     “Oh yeah? And what is that?” You made a grab for it and he threw the paper behind him, catching your wrist.
     Your heartbeat picked up because of the jumping and certainly not because of the sudden physical contact with Joey. Or, that’s what you were telling yourself.
     “That is just my…grocery list.” Joey gestured at the ball of paper.
     “You don’t buy your groceries,” you countered, “so nice try.”
    “Curse you, Chandler.”
     You shook his hand off your wrist and gripped his forearm for leverage as you tried to twist to grab the pie again.
     “So you admit, my name was on that pie?”
     He smiled. “Nope. Still no. And unlabeled leftovers are fair game.”
     “Not when they’re from my fridge,” Monica walked over to you and Joey, pinching him and grabbing the pie. She handed it back to you.
     “Ow, Mon,” he rubbed at his arm, “I was going to give it back. I was just borrowing it.”
     “Yeah, and I had it under control.” you realized your hand was still around Joey’s arm and you quickly put a hand on your hip.
     Monica watched the movement and then rolled her eyes at both of you.
     “And you’d better make sure you didn’t get crumbs all over my floor with that,” she called as she walked back towards her bedroom.
     You’d been staying with Monica and Rachel while you looked for a place. You appreciated her sharing her apartment with you but you couldn’t say you didn’t miss being able to put your feet on the furniture and drink milk out of the carton.
     As Monica disappeared from view, Rachel walked out of her room in a bathrobe.
     “Hey (Y/n), hey Joey,” she said on her way to the fridge, “Wait a minute, what are you doing here, Joe?”
     “Stopped by before my audition to eat my leftover pie,” he said. You elbowed him in the ribs. “Ow, ok (Y/n)’s pie. Happy?” He looked at you.
     “Very,” you said, satisfied.
     “Well, good luck at your audition,” Rachel said, looking in the refrigerator.
     “Thanks,” Joey said, sitting down at the table, before standing up again quickly. “Oh right, my audition! I’d better get going. Last time I was late to one of these the casting director made me pay.”
     “What’d they do?” You asked.
     “Made me give her 10 bucks for wasting her time. Like I had 10 bucks with me,” Joey said as he walked towards the door.
     “Break a leg! You’re going to kill it,” you called after him.
     “Thanks (Y/n),” He kissed you on the cheek before leaving and you watched him go, trailing a hand over your cheek where Joey’s lips had been.
     “You’re so obvious,” Rachel said pouring milk in her cereal.
     “I don’t know what you mean,” you told her, as if she didn’t know that you’d been crushing on him for the past few weeks. Rachel just raised an eyebrow at you.
     You hadn’t known what had changed. You’d been friends with Joey for nearly a year. But sometime recently you had started to see him differently and you wanted more and more to be something more than just friends.
      “You say that every time,” Monica said, obviously overhearing and walking back into the room. “And so I’ll tell you what I tell you every time. Tell him.”
     You had been avoiding that part for a while. It wasn’t that you didn’t want to make a move—you knew you’d have to at some time if you wanted your relationship to progress any further—but it was more that you didn’t want to ruin the friendship you had with Joey. You valued it so much and you couldn’t bear to make things weird between you if he didn’t feel the same way. And you doubted he did. He’d never exactly expressed interest in you.
     “What’s the worst that could happen?” Monica continued.
     Now it was your turn to raise an eyebrow at her.
     “Ok I get it, a lot,” she said, “But what’s love without a little risk.”
     You preferred not to risk anything, thank you. But she was right. You knew it. You ran a hand through your hair as you thought. “I don’t know, Mon.”
     “Come on sweetie,” Rachel added, “Joey would be lucky to have you. You’re sweet and funny and kind. Heck, if he doesn’t take you I will.” She smiled at you.
     You laughed and gave in. “You really think I should tell him?
     “Yes,” they said at the same time and you laughed.
     “But only when you’re ready,” Rachel added, putting a hand on your arm.
     Were you ready? You supposed you never really would be.
     You steeled yourself, “Alright, I’ll talk to him.”
    You walked towards the door.
    “Honey?” Rachel called, “Love the enthusiasm but Joey’s not home.”
     You remembered the audition. “Right,” you walked back towards the kitchen, “tomorrow.”
     You couldn’t say you were sorry about the delay. It would at least give you more time to think about what to say. You sat down at the table with Rachel and Monica and began to peel a banana, thinking about what tomorrow might bring.
₊˚ ✧ ‿︵‿୨୧‿︵‿ ✧ ₊˚
     You knocked on the door of Joey’s apartment. You weren’t exactly ready, but it was now or never, you thought, as you waited for Joey to answer the door.
     You were greeted by Chandler instead. You let out a breath.
     “Oh, I thought you were going to be Joey,” you told him.
     “No need to look so disappointed,” Chandler said, “Good evening to you too.”
     “I’m not disappointed,” you told him, “I just—is Joey home?” You asked.
     “You know, if I had a dollar every time a girl said that to me when opening this door…”
     You shook your head, smiling, “I just have something I need to ask him.”
     “He’s out right now but he should be back soon. Can I take a message?”
     “This is kinda something that needs to be said in person,” you said, playing with a strand of your hair.
     Chandler led you in to the apartment and you sat down on the couch.
     “So how did Joey’s audition go?” You asked Chandler, trying to make small talk so you wouldn’t die of anticipation while you waited for Joey to get home.
     “Not great,” he admitted, “Something about apple juice and a wild parrot which I’m assuming means he didn’t get the part.”
     You laughed despite your nerves. You didn’t even want to know what Chandler meant by that.
     “I thought maybe he was at a callback,” you said, thinking aloud, “but never mind.”
     “No, Joey has a date,” Chandler said. “Some hot girl he met at the audition, so I guess it wasn’t a total waste.”
     You stopped listening. Hot girl? No. This couldn’t be happening. Joey was out right now with some beautiful woman and you were waiting in his apartment ready to confess your love for him.
     “(Y/n), are you ok?” Chandler must have noticed your expression because he looked concerned.
     “I have to go,” you told him in a hurry before bouncing up and walking towards the door. It was only then when you heard footsteps approaching and the sound of Joey’s voice as he talked to someone—presumably his date. You ran the other way back towards Chandler.
     “You have to hide me,” you gripped his shirt in your hands.
     Chandler looked absolutely baffled. You didn’t have time for this.
     “Now!”
     “Um, my room,” Chandler said as he hurried you in there.
     “If he asks just say you have a girl in here,” you called out to him in a whisper.
     “He’s not going to believe that!” Chandler whisper-yelled back to you before you started to shut the door quickly.
     “You’ll think of something,” you said back. “Tell me when the coast is clear.”
     You left Chandler looking lost in the living room. Safely behind his door you relaxed but only a little. You would just wait until Joey went to the bathroom or something and then Chandler would sneak you out. No harm done, right? You would feel sad later.
     You heard Joey enter the apartment and you could just make out his and Chandler’s voices.
      “So how was it?” Chandler asked him.
      “Amazing! Jessica’s great! She stopped to say hi to someone she knew down the hall but she’ll be here any second.”
      “Well that’s fantastic, Joe,” Chandler said.
     “What’s fantastic?” You heard a female voice and your hearing sharpened.
     “You are,” you heard Joey tell her smoothly.
     “No you’re fantastic,” she said back.
      You were going to be sick. Every word they said was like a punch to the gut. And you didn’t mind admitting that you mocked Joey’s date behind the closed door like any self-respecting person would.
      “Well, I’m glad you two had a good time,” Chandler said, “Now if you don’t mind, I’ll just be getting back to my room.”
      You heard Chandler’s footsteps grow closer to you. They were both silent for a moment and you strained to hear. You leaned forwards and knocked an alarm clock off the desk. It crashed to the floor and you might’ve been fine if it didn’t begin going off loudly. You cursed Chandler under your breath for buying an alarm clock that made rooster sounds.
     “Chandler, do you have someone in there?” You heard Joey say.
      “W-why would you think that?”
     “Yeah you’re right,” he said, laughing it off, “Like you would have a girl in your room that I don’t know about.”
      “Yep, that’s me,” Chandler said wryly, “alone forever.”
      Chandler opened the door just a crack and then stepped into his room.
      “You better pretend to be my date next time we do this,” he whisper-yelled.
     “You better have a normal alarm clock next time we do this!” You threw your arms up.
     “It makes me think of the farm!” he said, indignantly.
     “You’ve never lived on a farm!”
     “Whatever,” Chandler gave up, “You can go now, Joey’s in his room with Jessica.”
     You nodded and felt relieved as you made your way to the door. You only realized what this meant when you heard Joey and Jessica in the other room.
     And from the sound of it, they were certainly enjoying the second part of their date.
     And with that the reality of the evening crashed down on you. You and Joey weren’t  going to happen. He was clearly interested in whomever this woman was and your plans for confessing your feelings were obviously ruined.
     You sat down on Chandler’s bed and put your head in your hands—and over your ears so you didn’t have to hear what was going on in Joey’s room.
     Chandler sat down next to you and placed an arm around you.
     “I know,” is all he said as he rubbed your shoulders.
     “How do—” You started, sniffing. You hadn’t actually told Chandler why you were here to see Joey. He ignored it.
     “His loss,” Chandler said and you managed a weak smile as you leaned your head against his shoulder.
     This was so not how you imagined this evening going.
₊˚ ✧ ‿︵‿୨୧‿︵‿ ✧ ₊˚
     “…and then they did it for the rest of the night and Chandler and I watched a movie,” you told Monica, Rachel, and Phoebe as you took a sip of your coffee.
     All three of you were at Central Perk and you were filling them in on the events of the past night.
     Which had been, all things considered, fairly miserable. You appreciated Chandler hanging out with you all night and at least the volume of the movie drowned out anything else…almost. But you still hadn’t been able to stop thinking about Joey and the other girl.
     “I’m sorry honey,” Rachel said, “is there anything we can do to help?”
     “Get rid of Jessica?” You mumbled sarcastically.
     “Well—” Phoebe started, an inspired look in her eye.
     You interrupted her, “I’m kidding, Pheebs. But I appreciate the support.”
     You sighed. You were just going to have to get on with your life and pretend nothing had ever been different. Pretend you didn’t want Joey every time that you saw him and be happy for him and his new relationship.
     “Well, there are plenty of other fish in the sea,” Phoebe said.
     “And if I don’t want any other fish?” You said, looking down at your coffee mug.
     “You could always talk to Joey about it,” Monica said. “I mean, maybe if he knew how you felt—”
     “Ok, don’t look,” Rachel said, watching out the window. “But Joey’s coming inside.”
     Your stomach flipped. For all you told yourself about moving on and pretending, you weren’t sure if you were ready to see Joey yet. What if it was too painful or you were to obvious? You paused, contemplating how weird it was for you to be nervous to see Joey. You had been friends for so long and you weren’t used to it.
     No time to think about that now, you told yourself as you jumped out of your seat and turned around. You saw Joey walk through the door and you backed up helplessly.
     “Hey guys,” he said, seeing all of you.
     “Hey Joey,” Phoebe said, “It’s great to see you but, uh, Monica and Rachel and I were just about to go to our…knitting class. Right?”
     What was she doing?
     “Right,” Monica said, elbowing Rachel.
     “Oh yes, and we’re going to be late if we don’t leave soon,” Rachel said, understanding on her face.
     They all walked towards the door and you stared after them hopelessly.
     “Talk to him,” Monica mouthed and you bit your lip.
     “Knitting?” Joey asked.
     “Yeah, well you know how I like the smell of…yarn,” Phoebe fumbled, “We’ll see you guys later.”
     And with that, her and the other two girls were gone leaving you alone with Joey. Well, alone aside from the dozen or so other customers oblivious to your awkwardness as you tried to find words…any words.
     Joey sat down at one of the tables and you sat on the edge of the couch a few feet away.
     “That was weird,” Joey looked thoughtful, “Does yarn have a smell?”
     You shrugged and Joey kept talking.
     “Anyway, I’m starving, do you want anything?”
     “No, thank you, I just ate.”
     A lie. You hoped your rumbling stomach didn’t deceive you.
     Joey ordered and then returned to his table, “So (Y/n), what’s new with you?”
     “Um, nothing really,” you said, “You?”
     You regretted it immediately when you heard his answer.
     Joey ran a hand through his hair, smiling, “Well, I met this really great girl the other day and I’m actually waiting for her right now. We’re supposed to go bowling. I can’t wait for you to meet her.”
     “Oh, that’s awesome.”
     Was your voice usually this high?
     “I’d love to meet her but, I have to go,” you checked your invisible watch, “now, actually. I’m meeting some friends.”
     Another lie. You had to get out of here before you were stuck meeting—
     “Jessica!”
     Joey hurried over to her and kissed her on the cheek. You bit the inside of your cheek and watched as Joey brought her over to you.
     “Jessica this is my friend (Y/n)…”
     Friend.
     “…and (Y/n), this is my girlfriend Jessica.”
    Girlfriend.
    You watched Joey smiling and looking expectantly between the two of you. You should be supportive of him. That’s what a good friend would do.
     So you inhaled and said, “Hi Jessica, it’s so nice to meet you.”
     “You too,” Jessica said, pushing her blonde locks behind her ear. “Joey and I really should be going but I’d love to get to know each other sometime.”
     “Definitely,” you said and Joey looked thrilled at the two of you talking.
     “See you later (Y/n),” Joey said and then more quietly, “wish me luck.”
     “Good luck,” you almost whispered as you watched Joey and his girlfriend walk away, his hand in hers, him leaning slightly down to hear something that she was saying into his ear.
     And you wanted to wish him luck, you really did. But as you watched Joey walk away with the Jessica, all you could think about was how desperately you wanted that to be you.
     You weren’t paying much attention to what you were doing as you picked up Joey’s forgotten drink order and scone.
     You turned around to go sit down and crashed into something—or, someone it seemed—on your way there. The coffee went flying and you fell to the ground.
     “Are you ok?” You heard a male voice say.
     You looked up and saw a tall man staring down at you, coffee dripping down his front and an arm out to help you up. You took it and dusted yourself off.
      “I am so sorry, I wasn’t looking where I was going,” you hurried out.
     “My fault entirely,” he said.
     “I’ll buy you a new shirt,” you said.
     “I didn’t like it anyway,” he waved it off. “You did me a favor honestly. Don’t tell Aunt Ruth.”
     You laughed despite yourself, and picked up the mug and scone from the floor.
     “I’m (Y/n),” you said, filling the silence.
     “James,” he shot back.
     “Scone?” You offered him the pastry awkwardly.
     “Sorry, he said, “but my parents always said never to take floor-scones from strangers. Even very beautiful strangers.”
     You found yourself blushing and your eyes widened. What was happening?
     “But I’d be happy to take you out for real food sometime. If that’s something you would be interested in?”
     You played with the fabric of your shirt. You immediately thought of Joey bit stopped yourself.
     Why should you be thinking of Joey right now? He clearly wasn’t interested in you, so why waste time on something that clearly wasn’t going to happen. Maybe you should take this man up on his offer and go on a date with him. He was funny and nice and had called you beautiful.
     “Ok, this is getting embarrassing,” he backed up, “Let me down easy, ok?”
     You laughed, “I would love to go out with you sometime.”
     “Not to sound super eager or anything,” he said, “but do you wanna do something now?”
     “Your shirt?” You prompted.
     “Oh, I’m making it a style now,” he said. “I’m totally adding trendsetter to my resume.”
     “Alright then, let’s do something,” you said, feeling better than you had in the past couple days as James led you out of the door of Central Perk.
     Maybe this was just what you needed.
₊˚ ✧ ‿︵‿୨୧‿︵‿ ✧ ₊˚
     “Are you sure he’s coming?”
     “He’ll be here any second, I promise.”
     You answered Phoebe and took a deep breath as you sat at Central Perk with your friends, who were all eagerly waiting for your boyfriend to arrive so they could meet him.
     Your boyfriend. You pondered the word. If someone has told you a week ago that you’d be seeing someone, you’d have laughed in their face. And no one probably would have, because your friends were just as surprised as you were. They all knew how you felt about Joey.
     And until you met James you hadn’t thought it possible that you would get over Joey at all. Or at least not for a very long while.
     But one date with James had turned into seven and you were actually happy. You had learned a lot about him and you had plenty in common. He was so easy to be around that it made you forget about Joey and Jessica and the relationship that would never be.
     Almost. You still felt bitter at the thought of them together, but you tried to push those feelings aside and focus on this relationship.          You reminded yourself that you should be over Joey.
     You saw a glimpse of a familiar flannel through the window of the coffee shop.
     “Alright everyone be quiet, here he comes,” you said.
     And you were over Joey, you told yourself, as you watched the amazing guy you were dating walk through the door and catch your eye, smiling at you.
    You hoped, you added as you looked over at Joey finishing off a blueberry muffin. He shot you a thumbs up and you gave him a weak smile back.
     “Hey (Y/n)!” James, your boyfriend of exactly three weeks, said. “Everyone.”
     A chorus of ‘hey’ and ‘it’s nice to meet you’ and ‘Well, now I know why (Y/n)’s dating you. You know, for the free firewood’ —that being Chandler—followed as you made the introductions.
     You rolled your eyes at Chandler. James was an accountant, and not a lumberjack. He had talked about his love of numbers on multiple occasions.
     “It’s so great to finally see you,” Monica shook his hand, “(Y/n) talks about you all the time.”
     Did you? You supposed you did. You hadn’t let any of them meet James at first so your descriptions of your dates were all they had to go on. And if you exaggerated his perfection than it was just because you really liked him and wanted all your friends to like him. You shook off the thought that some of it might be to convince yourself.
     Because on paper James was perfect. And you really enjoyed spending time with him. But—
     You glanced over at Joey again.
     No. He had his relationship and you had yours. It was better this way. Because he was still seeing Jessica and it sounded like they were hitting it off.
     And if some of your gushing about James was for Joey’s benefit than so be it.
     “All good things I hope,” James answered and you were brought back to the present.
     Monica turned away and mouthed ‘he’s hot’ to you enthusiastically. You rolled your eyes at her.
     “So, what do you do?” Ross asked James as the latter walked over and sat down next to you, throwing an arm around your shoulders.
     “I’m an accountant,” he said.
     Chandler passed a five dollar bill to Ross, mumbling something about “being sure he was a lumberjack”.
     Rachel elbowed Chandler and as he rubbed his arm she smiled warmly at James and said, “Well, any friend of (Y/n)’s is a friend of ours.”
     “Which hasn’t happened yet because all of (Y/n)’s friends are sitting on this couch!” Phoebe said, teasing. She wasn’t wrong.
     “Well, you all seem really great but (Y/n) and I have to run. We have a movie to get to.” James stood up and you moved with him.
     You said goodbye to everyone, taking James’s hand. On your way out you risked a glance at Joey. You couldn’t help it. He had been so quiet throughout your whole introduction. You didn’t know why, but you almost thought he was disappointed? Or maybe just bored? Probably wishing he was with Jessica right now.
     Once you thought of it you wished you hadn’t because you felt awful all over again and you willed your cheeks not to heat. You sighed. Now, Joey was looking down, running a finger around the top of his empty coffee mug. He caught you looking at him and you tried to play it off by waving. Pretending you hadn’t just been staring at him. He gave you an almost too enthusiastic wave back and you just turned around and kept walking towards the door, away from Joey and towards your boyfriend who was waiting for you.
₊˚ ✧ ‿︵‿୨୧‿︵‿ ✧ ₊˚
     “I’m just saying, if pineapple doesn’t  belong on pizza then why is it on pizza?” Joey said, throwing down his cards on the table.
     “You got me there,”  Chandler said, rolling his eyes. “And I fold.”
     You stifled a laugh as you examined the cards in your hand. You, Joey, Chandler, and James were all seated around Joey and Chandler’s kitchen table playing a game of poker.
     The whole thing had been James’s idea, and at first you weren’t sure that it was a good one. You’d been doing a lot of different activities that he had planned with your friends lately as he tried to get to know them  better.
     You appreciated that he wanted to be friends with your friends and all of his efforts were actually adorable. You had already been with Phoebe to her grandma’s together, went with Ross to his museum, and last week you had gone shopping with   Monica and Rachel—and James somehow went home with an armful of fabric swatches, talking about undertones.
     But this was different. It was getting easier and easier to be around Joey as time passed and weeks went by and you were both in relationships, but things were still a bit awkward, on your part at least.
     But it did seem like Joey was…distant lately as well. It was probably just the fact that he was spending a lot of time with his girlfriend and you scolded yourself for worrying about it. Right now you were just friends playing a game of poker. You looked over and James and found him trying to look at your cards.
     “No peeking,” you told James as he looked over your shoulder, so not discreetly.
     “Maybe I just wanted to kiss you,” he covered, leaning down and pressing his lips to yours.
     “Full house,” you whispered to him, flashing him your cards and he smiled down at you.
     Chandler reached his arms out to Joey and pursed his lips, “Show me your cards?”
     Everyone laughed and Joey aimed his cards away from Chandler.
     “Hey, is it my fault for wanting to kiss my girlfriend?” James acted innocent. “Since when is that cheating?
     He put an arm around you and you kissed him on the cheek.
     “House rules,” Joey said.
     James shrugged, “He didn’t say we couldn’t do this.”
     As he grabbed your hand you heard Joey’s chair slide on the hard-wood floor.
     “I’ll be right back guys, I’m going to go get us something to eat. Play this hand without me.”
     You watched him leave the room and Chandler called after him.
     “But you don’t have any money with you!”
     “I’ll go to Monica’s,” he called back.
     “You most certainly will not,” Monica said and you turned around to find her standing in the doorway of her apartment. “And your girlfriend’s waiting for you. Why in my apartment, I don’t know.”
     “Oh, right,” Joey said sheepishly, “Can I use your apartment? I told her I’d be over there. It’s important.”
     “Joey!” You heard Monica yell before Chandler got up and shut the door and their voices became muffled.
     You tried not to think about what important thing Joey could mean. You pushed thoughts of him and Jessica away and reminded yourself that you didn’t care.
     “Well,” Chandler said, “I think I’m out too before I lose anymore money and then who’ll pay the rent?”
     “Yeah, I should get going. I promised my sister I’d help her clean out her basement,” James headed towards the door and Chandler raised an eyebrow at him.
    “Hey,” James defended, “If you’d seen my sister’s house you’d understand why it’s a two person job. Or, a team of movers’ job. Bye, (Y/n).”
     He kissed you quickly and then left the apartment, leaving you with Chandler. It felt eerily like a little over a month ago when you had gone there to ask Joey out.
     “So, you’ve been seeing James for a while now,” Chandler prompted.
     “Yep,” you said, “He’s really great.”
     Chandler stepped towards you hesitantly, “So you and Joe?”
     “What about me and Joe?” You kept your voice even, “He’s in a relationship and so am I. We’re both happy and that’s that.”
     “Well—” Chandler started, but was interrupted by Joey sighing as he entered his apartment.
     “Glad that’s over with,” Joey said.
     “Did you let her down easy?” Chandler asked.
     “As easy as I could. And then she started crying and—this is why I just don’t call people back,” he sat down on the couch. “Breaking up with people in person is hard.”
     “What? You broke up with Jessica?” You could hardly believe it. “I thought you guys were so happy together.”
     Joey looked over at you, “Well, you know, we just didn’t have that much in common.”
     You were both silent for a moment.
     “Hey,” Chandler announced, “This is awkward! So I’m just going to...”
     He ran out the door and you cursed him under your breath.
     “Weird,” Joey mumbled and you sat down opposite from Joey as you processed this new information.
     Joey wasn’t seeing anyone. You stopped yourself before you could go any further. No. You were in a good relationship and Joey had just got out of one. Now was not a good time. And just because he wasn’t dating Jessica didn’t mean he all of a sudden wanted to date you. And you were over him. Right?
     “So you and James are really serious now,” Joey said.
     “Yeah, I guess,” you responded. You hadn’t really thought of it like that, but you suppose technically you were.
     “Well, I’m really happy for you,” he said, “He’s a lucky guy.”
     It doesn’t mean anything, you told yourself, he’s just being a good friend.
     “Well, I’m sorry about you and Jessica.”
     “Don’t be,” Joey stood up, “It wasn’t meant to be.”
     He took a step towards you.
     “Do you ever wonder if anything’s actually ‘meant to be’? Or is it just our decisions that lead us places?” You pondered.
     “I think if something is meant to happen than you’ll realize it and make the decisions that lead you there,” Joey said, taking another step closer to you.
     “Really?” You asked, “You don’t think something could be staring you in the face and you don’t recognize the signs?”
     “I think in a way you always know,” Joey said, more sincere now. “Even if you don’t realize it until it’s too late.”
     You were saved from working out the meaning of that and this whole conversation by the phone ringing and Joey picking it up. His face got dark before he covered it up and smiled at you.
     “It’s James.”
     You walked over and took the phone from him.
     “Hello?”
      His voice was muffled but he sounded intense when he said, “Hey, (Y/n), I need to talk to you. Are you free…now?”
     “Um, yeah, I can be at Central Perk in five minutes.”
     “Sounds good,” he said, “I’ll see you there. Love you.”
     You hesitated and he hung up. Joey looked to you, obviously curious about what that was all about.
     “He says he needs to talk to me and to meet him in a few minutes.”
     You headed towards the door and Joey handed you your coat.
     “See you later,” you said and he shut the door behind you as you stepped out into the hall.
     What could James possibly want?
₊˚ ✧ ‿︵‿୨୧‿︵‿ ✧ ₊˚
     “James is leaving,” you announced.
     You hung your coat on the coat rack of Monica’s apartment. All of your friends were lounging around in the living room but they rushed over towards you at this declaration and you held out your arms.
     “No, I’m fine, really.”
     In truth, you were too fine. More fine than you should be, after dating James for the better part of a month and a half. Which wasn’t a long time, but you had gotten to know him well and you really liked him.
     “Are you sure you’re ok?” Rachel asked, putting a hand on your amt.
     “Yes,” you reiterated, “James was offered a new job in California and he is going to take it. It’s all very sudden, but I’m ok. And technically, he gave me the option. To either stay long distance or end it now. I’m…still thinking it over.”
     You knew you should be more affected. But you felt numb to the sudden departure of your boyfriend. You knew you should be upset, and you were sad at the loss of him in your life. But it was more that you were going to miss spending time with him as a friend rather than as a boyfriend.
     You didn’t pretend not to know why that was.
     Either way, you still had to decide if you wanted to stay with him or not. He had left the decision up to you, saying that he’d be fine with whatever decision you made, and had told you to take all the time you need.
     You told him you’d call him tonight. You didn’t tell him why you were hesitating to answer him. Because you wanted to stay with him. But you couldn’t make yourself say it, because what if you were missing other opportunities. Your conversation with Joey earlier had made you think and you couldn’t help but ponder what if.
     Not that you had much confidence in that. Joey wasn’t even here right now, you realized.
     You were brought back to the present. “So what are you going to tell him?” Ross asked.
     “I don’t know yet,” you sighed, “I suppose I have no reason not to stay with him, even though we’ll be so far apart.”
     That was the sensible thing, right? Stay with the great guy that wanted to be with you even miles and miles apart. You needed to stop focusing on what probably couldn’t be and focus on what already was.
     “If you’re sure,” Monica said. “We’ll support whatever decision you make.”
    “I’m sure he’ll send you lots of free wood from California,” Chandler said, and you chuckled.
     “Phoebe?” Rachel furrowed her brow, “Are you alright?”
      Phoebe stood over by the couch. She was biting her lip and looked like she was stopping herself from saying something.
     “Phoebe?” You asked, “What is it?”
     “Oh, it’s just—” she started, “No, I can’t tell you! It wouldn’t be right!”
     “Tell me,” you said, walking over to her.
     She backed up, “No!”
     “Phoebe!”
     “I can’t!”
     “Phoebe!”
      “Joey’s in love with you! Ok? There I said it,” She sat down on the couch and looked like she had been wanting to say that for a long time.
     You felt like you had been turned upside down.
     “He didn’t say anything because of you and James and, you know, but he loves you, (Y/n). And I know I shouldn’t be telling you and I promised him I wouldn’t but—” she stood up again, “I know you love him and before you make this decision you just need to know that.”
     You couldn’t even begin to comprehend this. Joey loved you? That couldn’t be true. Phoebe must be mistaken and—
     Joey walked into the apartment. You saw your friends look around at each other.
     “You love me?” You mumbled barely able to believe it.
     Joey’s smiling face went pale and filled with horror as he backed up slowly.
     “Oops,” Phoebe mumbled and Joey glanced once at her before hurrying out the door and down the hall.
     “Joey, wait!” You shut the door behind you and caught up to him, putting a hand on his shoulder. He turned around to face you.
     “Look (Y/n), I never meant to—”
     “You love me?” You asked again.
     “(Y/n), you have to believe me when I say—”
     You stepped so you looked Joey directly in the eye.
     “No, Joey,” you whispered, “I need to know, do you love me?
     “I can’t love you, (Y/n),” his voice raised with every word, “I can’t love you. And I can’t love you so much that it hurts to pretend that I don’t….that I do…that I…”
     He looked up, confused, “Oh, you get the point! And every time I see you with James I’m reminded of how I can’t have you.”
     Your conversation about signs and realizations came back to you. Your heart stopped beating. When you found words your voice came out shaky and breathless. “But…Jessica?”
     “Jessica and I broke up,” he said, taking a step closer to you. “because I couldn’t stop thinking about you. I just realized that too late.”
     “And I shouldn’t be telling you this,” Joey continued, “I never planned on telling you any of this…”
     He looked up at you and you tried to discern the expression on his face.
     “Just forget I said anything, ok?” Joey said looking pained, “I hope you and James are happy together, I really do. Just, forget it.”
     He moved to walk past you and you started talking trust to stop him from leaving.
     “James is an amazing guy,” you said, your words coming out slowly, “he’s smart and thoughtful and attractive—”
    “Is this supposed to be helping?” Joey asked, turning around.
     “What I mean is, James is perfect,” you said, “but he’ll never be you.”
     Joey’s eyes snapped to yours and you continued, “I only started dating James because I was trying to get over you. James is moving away and he left the decision with me to end or keep our relationship.”
     You stepped closer to Joey. “So say the word. Tell me you love me. Tell me you love me and I’ll leave him and be yours.”
     Joey closed the distance between you, fire burning in his eyes. “I love you (Y/n). God, I love you so much.”
     And he kissed you. He kissed you like he had been waiting a thousand years. He backed you up against the wall and his hands went to your hair as you kissed him back. You threw your arms around his neck and took in the beauty of this moment.
     It was passionate and raw and everything you had been hoping for and more.
     Joey pulled away from you, reaching to brush the hair back from your face.
     “Wow, (Y/n).”
     “Yeah,” you breathed. “I guess I have Phoebe to thank for this.”
     “You’re welcome!” You heard Phoebe’s muffled voice from the other side of the door.
     You smiled at Joey, rolling your eyes and walking over to open the apartment door.
     You turned the knob and all of your friends faces greeted you as they scrambled away from the door.
     “Run!” Chandler yelled, “Scatter! She can’t catch all of us! It was Monica’s idea!”
     “Seriously Chandler?” Monica smacked him in the arm.
     You laughed.
     “We’re just so happy for you two,” Rachel said. You tried to convey your gratitude to her—to all of them—for their friendship.
     “I’m happy,” you said. You felt giddy in a way that you hadn’t in a long time—that you had never felt with James.
     “We knew you’d get together,” Phoebe nodded. “My psychic totally saw it coming.”
     “And we were only listening at the door for a little bit,” Ross added.
     Joey put his arm around you and you leaned in to him. You couldn’t even pretend to be offended, you were just glad to be here in Joey’s arms, surrounded by your friends.
     “What do you say we go get a bite or something?” Joey asked you.
     You nodded as he walked out the door with you and down the hall once again.
     “How about pie?” You teased, remembering your almost-stolen leftovers.
     “My treat,” Joey answered in agreement. “Have all the pie you want!”
     “Will it be mine this time?” You teased back.
     “All yours,” Joey said, stopping to look down at you softly. His eyes sparkled as he said,
     “Just like me.”
✧˖*°࿐ABOUT THE AUTHOR
.·:*¨ ailís — 23 — they/them (okay with girl gendered terms) — bisexual enby ¨*:·.
ꕤ — i’m bilingual, my first language is french but i only write in english (though i might incorporate french in some fics/one shots).
ꕤ — i'm back in school for the first time after dropping out of college four years ago so i'm struggling with keeping my school-work-social-activist life balanced (because yes i also got involved with my university's student committee for Palestine literally during the first week of class). i'm currently a free student, meaning i'm in no particular bachelors program, and i'm hesitating between majoring in art history or photography. i won't be following any posting schedule on here, i write when i have time to and i'm a little bit of a perfectionist so i won't rush myself to fulfill your requests with writing that i'm not satisfied of.
ꕤ — things i like: blueberry bagels with cream cheese, autumn, concert photography, poetry, music (arctic monkeys, lorde, blur, wallows, inhaler, fontaines dc), movies (studio ghibli, nolan’s dark knight trilogy, irish cinema, french cinema), tv shows (peaky blinders, broadchurch, derry girls, true detective, doctor who, the sopranos, new girl), sports (montreal canadiens, liverpool fc, celtic fc, f1), the colour green, europe (but not england or germany), cillian murphy, david tennant, art museums, batman.
ꕤ — i’ve been writing fanfiction for years (it all started with very poorly written one direction imagines on instagram and wattpad when i was thirteen…), improving both my writing skills and my english vocab + grammar along the way. my earliest works available are from 2021 (on ao3) because i’m too ashamed of anything posted before that (and it was also very bad).
ꕤ — i’m very multifandom and will mostly write content related to my most recent hyperfixations. there’s a list down below with all the characters i read and am interested in writing fanfiction for.
✧˖*°࿐WRITING + RULES
ꕤ — this blog will be mostly dedicated to one shots, blurbs, headcanons, drabbles and maybe short series.
i do write long series on wattpad (and also on ao3 but that one is currently on hold). i’m in the middle of a friends series rewrite with a joey tribbiani x female oc storyline that i’m very invested in (this might be the first multi chaptered fanfic i ever complete). i also started writing a tenth doctor x witch oc au but i’m taking much longer to update this one as it will mostly be original episodes instead of following the doctor who storyline. i also have a tommy shelby x oc fic that’s been on hold for a year that i plan on eventually getting back into writing.
ꕤ — i honestly don’t really care about canon (especially when it comes to stuff like the dc universe). i will always respect identity traits that are important to the character like race, sexuality, disability, etc., but i might get ooc sometimes when it comes to their personalities.
ꕤ — i will try to keep my reader inserts as physically vague as possible except if it’s indicated that the reader is afab. however, i am physically disabled with chronic pain so i might incorporate some aspects related to that in my writing (it will be indicated at the beginning of the post).
ꕤ — i am okay with minors interacting with my sfw writings but if i see anyone under the age of 18 interacting with nsfw stuff you will be blocked. i can’t stop you from reading it but i am not comfortable with you interacting with that content.
ꕤ — requests will be answered once i’m done writing them. i will try my best to do so as fast as possible but i tend to write multiple works at once so if you see me post other things after you sent your request, don’t get deterred. if you send a request i don’t want to write, i’ll reply to the ask to also let others know not to request something similar.
ꕤ — do not translate, copy or publish my work on other platforms without my permission.
!! DO NOT REQUEST !!
major character death (canon or non-canon), underage reader or character, incest, any kink involving fluids, noncon/dubcon, self harm, eating disorders, yandere, abuse, manipulation, butt stuff, cheating/infidelity, a/b/o
The One With A Dozen Lasagnas
Third Person POV
Today’s the day.
Today, they’ll get to see their baby. Neither slept, both too excited and eager to get a glimpse of their child. As they sit in the doctor’s office waiting room, Emily can feel and very much hear Joey’s excitement and nervousness as he drums his feet on the tiled floors. She understands it of course, but as the drumming increased, so did the annoying squeaking sound from his seat which quickly frayed Emily’s incredibly fraught nerves.
“Joey, Joey…” She places her hand over his left, “I’m only saying this because I love you, stop drumming or I will kill you.”
Tumblr media
"Sorry, sorry,” he stutters. He didn’t mean to annoy her but he couldn’t help it. This was worse than first-night stage fright. He takes a hold of her hand and laces their fingers together, “it’s just I’m really nervous, y’know. What if there’s something wrong or what if-”
“Don’t say things like that. Everything’s going to be fine.”
Joey merely nods and tries to distract himself with one of the many parenthood posters that line the walls just as a couple walk hand in hand and sit down opposite them. Immediately the husband places a protective palm over his wife’s bump which makes Emily smile.
“He always does this, he likes the baby to know Daddy is around.” the woman smiles before nodding towards Emily’s bump, “Is this your first?”
“Yeah, we’re finding out the sex today.” She bites her lip, slightly nervous.
“Oh, that’s so exciting! This little one is our third and final…”
“You said that the first time,” her husband cut in, “and the second time…”
At that moment, the nurse appears in the doorway, calling Emily’s name. The couple opposite smiles and wishes them both good luck as Joey wraps his arm around her shoulder and follows the nurse into the examination room.
The nurse points over towards the bed, “Okay Miss Bing, if you just want to make yourself comfortable on the bed and we can get things started.”
“Hey, maybe I should try that line on you when we get home,” Joey chuckles, wiggling his eyebrows but Emily just shakes her head. The nurse wasn’t overly amused either as she stared at him. “Sorry, I’m Joey, I’m the father.”
Emily makes herself comfortable on the slightly awkward mechanical bed, the paper rustling quickly annoying her. She lowers the waist of her loose-fitting pants and lifts her top to reveal her flourishing bump that never ceases to make Joey grin. The nurse then tucks a drape into the waistband so the gel wouldn’t get onto her clothes before leaving the room informing them that the Ultrasound Technician would be through in a moment.
Joey places his palm across the peak of her bump, “you okay?”
“A little nervous but we’re about to see our baby.” She answers, placing her hand on his.
“I bet we’re havin’ a boy.” He grins.
At that moment, the Ultrasound Technician walks in making Joey jump back a little in shock, “Well, let’s find out. Hi guys, I’m Zoe.”
Zoe takes a seat at the ultrasound machine and gets it set up. She applies a liberal amount of gel onto the transducer before glancing at the couple.
“This is gonna be cold,” she warns them as she applies a similar amount to Emily’s bump, making her gasp out a little.
As she places the transductor onto her stomach, Emily and Joey watch as the screen flickers between grey, white and black fuzz until the clear outline of their baby comes into clarity on the screen before their eyes.
“Wow! Oh my god,” Emily gasps, clutching tightly at Joey’s hand.
“Hey baby… Look Em, that’s our baby…”
Emily’s eyes flicker from the screen to Zoe’s face as her brow furrowed in confusion making her anxiety spike, “What’s wrong? What’s wrong with the baby?”
“I will be back in a minute, I just want Dr. Oberman in here.”
Naturally, Emily starts panicking, her hand now having a death grip on Joey’s hand, who was equally panicked but did his best to calm her down.
“Shh, it’s okay. Just breathe, just breathe.” He uses his other hand to comb through her hair, hoping his movements will calm her down.
Dr. Oberman walks in with a small smile, nodding her hello and takes the seat at the ultrasound machine that Zoe had occupied a few minutes before. She presses the transducer back over Emily’s bump, thoroughly studying the screen while Joey and Emily held their collective breaths waiting.
“Aha, yes. Okay-” She starts.
“Please just cut the crap and tell me our baby is okay,” Emily snaps, cutting her off.
Dr Oberman smiles and nods, “Both babies are just fine, Miss Bing.”
“Wait, what?” The couple says in sync, eyes wide.
They stare at each other in shock before turning back to the doctor for clarification.
Joey feels his knees tremble as he continues their thoughts, “Both? Did you say both?”
“I did, congratulations.” Their doctor grins, excited to be able to give them the news.
Emily fights back the tears to ask, “can you tell the sex yet?”
“Well, this little one…” She moves the transducer for a slightly clearer image, “...is a boy.”
“A boy! Em, we’ve got a boy!” Joey says, his voice going up an octave in excitement.
“But the other baby is slightly obscured by the other so I’m not able to clearly see and say. But what you do have is two very healthy babies. I’ll print you off some pictures and let you clean yourself up.”
Dr Oberman smiles and leaves the room leaving Joey and Emily teary-eyed, clutching at one another.
“Two babies Joey, we’re having twins.” She whispers, scared to speak any louder.
“Yeah, we are,” he kisses her deeply, pouring every ounce of love into it, “I love you. Thank you for making me a daddy.”
“I love you too.” She sniffs slightly before kissing his cheek. “Thank you for making me a mommy.”
He helps clean the gel from her bump, pressing a kiss just above her belly button before stepping back and allowing Emily to pull her clothes back into place just as Dr Oberman returns with the pictures and some leaflets.
“Here you go guys.” She says, handing the papers to Joey. “Now, being pregnant with twins is slightly different than a standard pregnancy. It’s highly unlikely you will carry to full term but ideally, we would like to get past the 37-week mark to make sure everyone is healthy. I’ve booked your next scan in a couple of weeks' time to see how everything’s progressing. Any problems at all, please call me. Congratulations again.”
The couple thank her before looking at the ultrasound in Joey’s hand, before taking in a deep breath, smiles slowly taking over their faces. Two babies?!
*F*R*I*E*N*D*S
Emily’s POV
I can’t believe it! Twins! We’re having twins. It’s terrifying and exciting in equal measures, like going on a huge rollercoaster when you were a kid. I know Joey must be feeling the same way, even if he won’t admit it. But the look of pure joy on his face when Dr Oberman told us we’re having a boy is one I’ll forever savour. He’s been saying from the beginning that we’re having a boy.
Something about “knowing what he made”, but now that it’s confirmed, it’s even more exciting! Even if it’s just for one of the babies. Part of me is so excited that the sex of the second twin is a mystery, but at the same time, it does make choosing names a little more difficult. Maybe we’ll be lucky and find out at the next scan but if we don’t, it’ll be a surprise for us both.
We decide to walk back home instead of hailing a cab. We’re having two babies now, and every cent saved counts. Even if my feet will hurt ten times more later, it’s worth it since we're saving for our pride and joys. Joey wraps his arm around my waist and keeps his palm pressed against my bump the entire time. It’s these little touches that remind me of how lucky I am, I can’t help but snuggle into his side.
Since it’s on our way, we stop by at the bookshop to grab some baby books, grateful for any additional help we can get and as we leave I’m hit by the delicious smells from the neighboring deli. I’m practically salivating, my cravings and hormones turning me into a feral beast. Joey doesn’t need telling twice when there’s food to be eaten and eagerly pulls me into the store to satisfy my taste buds and subdue my cravings.
Even as we walk up the stairs towards the apartment, we can hear Monica’s voice radiating through the hallway. She’s the sweetest woman in the world, but damn she’s loud. Joey pokes his head into our apartment, finding it empty so we enter Monica’s, who seems to have become a one woman lasagna factory. No wonder she’s practically tearing her hair out.
As soon as we step inside, my brother, Ross and Phoebe are sitting around the coffee table.
Phoebe spots us first and cheerfully greets us, “hey you two!”
“Hey Pheebs.”
Joey helps me take off my coat and immediately, I breathe a sigh of relief. He guides me over to the armchair and even though there’s plenty of space on the couch next to Phoebe and Chandler, Joey insists I sit on his lap in the chair. He just can’t keep his eyes or hands off my bump.
I can’t help but relax into his loving hold. I close my eyes for a moment, snuggling to him. As I open them again, I notice Phoebe wide-eyed, finally seeing my bump properly.
“Woah, you’re huge!” She gasps, before realizing what she said. “Sorry, not like in a mean way or anything. It’s just, y’know…”
“I know what you mean, Pheebs. It’s hardly surprising though, Joey was over 11lbs when he was born!” I say, glancing up at my wonderful boyfriend.
It’s safe to say that I’ve had to make my peace with having a large baby. I wouldn’t be surprised if the twins’ first word was ‘pizza’.
Chandler brings me out of my reverie, “How did the sonogram go?”
I feel Joey squeeze me tighter, his whole body buzzing with excitement.
“Amazing, so amazing! Getting to see what we made was so…” He nuzzles into my neck, unable to put it into words but his display of affection makes Chandler grimace.
“Dude,” he warns, throwing his hands out slightly.
“So can we see? Did you get any pictures?” Asks Ross, jumping onto the couch between Phoebe and Chandler.
“Oh, yeah!” I reach into my bag and grab the envelope Dr Oberman gave us.
I fish out the pictures and hand them over whilst keeping one back for me and Joey.
Hearing that pictures are being handed out, Monica drops her utensils and dashes over to the couch, “let me see! Let me see!” She leans over Chandler’s shoulder and quickly wells up, “Oh my god…”
Hearing everyone cooing at seeing the very clear outline of our little boy makes me well up also.
“It’s amazing. So, have I got a niece or a nephew?” Chandler asks, his eyes never leaving the photo.
Even though I’m about to burst inside, I play it cool as I play with a button on Joey’s shirt, “Well, we know one is definitely a boy…”
The collective sound of four jaws hitting the floor echoes through the apartment.
“Yay, it’s a boy,” Phoebe coos, poking at the sonogram, “Hey little guy!”
The penny quickly dropped for Chandler, “wait, one boy? You’re having more than one?!”
I can feel the tears streaming down my cheeks and can only nod my head. Thankfully Joey speaks up because words are definitely failing me at this point.
“We’re having twins!”
“Are you serious?!” Chandler cries out.
The next thing I know he’s pulled me to my feet and wraps his arms around me. He’s my big brother, we’ve been a team since we were little kids and I just know he’s going to be the best uncle in the world to the twins. He kisses my cheek and whispers “congratulations” before he lets go of me and turns to embrace Joey.
“Wait a minute, you’re having twins?! Two babies?!” Phoebe squeaked holding up two fingers wanting clarification, she was too cute sometimes.
I dab my eyes and nod softly. My eyes then fall on Monica and she is just as teary-eyed staring at the picture, talk of babies always makes her emotional.
“I’m gonna be an aunt…”
“You all are, you’re all gonna be aunts and uncles, we wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Our kids aren’t even born yet but they’re already so loved.
I hug both Monica and Phoebe and notice Chandler and Joey finally break apart. He gestures towards the door and Joey follows him out into the hallway. I can’t help but smile to myself, Chandler’s probably going to deliver his big brother's speech. Hopefully, Joey won’t say anything inappropriate or laugh in his face.
Third Person POV
Chandler wipes his eyes as he steps out into the hallway with Joey in tow. He hadn’t expected to be so emotional but seeing how happy his little sister is, he’s so proud and happy for her and, of course, Joey.
“So, uh, twins dude. That’s amazing.”
Joey looks as though his smile is about to burst through his cheeks, “I know, I keep pinching myself.”
“Listen, I’m saying this to you as Em’s big brother. Do your best for them. It doesn't matter what that entails, just do your best for them. I’m always gonna be there if you need financial help or someone to talk to, you know that but...Just, whatever you do, don’t hurt her.”
Joey has the good grace not to laugh at Chandler’s ‘big brother’ speech. He’s the only brother to seven sisters. He knows better than anyone what it’s like to be a big brother wanting to protect his family.
“Chandler, I get it. I would die protecting her, she’s my world and she’s giving me the greatest gift imaginable. I know you’re gonna say ‘I’ll kick your ass if you upset her’.” He puts his hands on his hips, looking up at his best friend.
“Oh no, not me.” Chandler points at himself before gesturing over his shoulder toward Monica’s apartment. “Emily. Dude, she could kick your ass into next week.”
Joey can’t argue with that, even prior to pregnancy Em was already a real firecracker. Throw in some high-intensity hormones and she made for a lady you really didn’t want to piss off.
“Yeah, that’s true. She’s a badass,” A smirk tugged at his lips as he drawled, “She’s one sexy badass mama…”
“Dude, that’s my sister.”
*F*R*I*E*N*D*S
Monica’s normally pristinely organized kitchen had become lasagna HQ. Every available surface is now home to a tray of lasagna and there’s still more appearing from the oven. All the while Monica is on the phone to her Aunt Silv who she’s made all these for.
“Aunt Silv, stop yelling! All I’m saying is that, if you had told me vegetarian lasagna, I would’ve made vegetarian lasagna. … Well, the meat is every third layer, maybe you could scrape?”
Meanwhile, everyone else is sitting around the coffee table looking through the new baby books that Emily picked up on her way home.
“Done!” Ross proclaims and slams the cover shut and drops the book onto the table.
“Wow, now if only the pregnancy and giving birth were that easy.” Emily says, raising an eyebrow at him.
Joey’s amazed, he hadn’t even read a take-out menu that fast. “Ross, did you seriously just read that whole baby book?”
“Yup! You could plunk me down in the middle of any woman’s uterus, no compass, and I could find my way out of there like that!”
He looks so proud of himself that Emily can’t help but laugh, “Ross, I love you but you’re going nowhere near my uterus.”
“Ooh, this is cool.” Phoebe suddenly chimed in, gaining everyone’s attention, “It says in some parts of the world, people actually eat the placenta.”
Joey and Emily wince in disgust, whereas Chandler looks horrified.
“And we’re done with the yogurt.” He says, dumping the spoon in the container before putting it on the table, unable to stomach another spoonful.
“Aunt Silv, I did this as a favor. I am not a caterer. … What do you want me to do with a dozen lasagnas? … Nice talk Aunt Silv. You kiss Uncle Freddie with that mouth?”
Joey leads Emily over to the armchair, knowing she wants to relax. He sits down first and lets Emily sit between his thighs, nestling back against his chest. With his arms around her waist, he holds up one of the baby books for them to read together.
“Em, check it out. Do you know that right now, our babies are only this big?” He holds up his hand, showing the size, “This is our baby! Hi mommy!” He says in a cute little voice, lightly pinching her on the nose. “Hi Uncle Chandler! Hi Uncle Ross!”
Ross played along, “Hello!”
“Uncle Ross, how come you don’t live with your wife? How come your wife lives with that other lady? What’s a lesbian?”
Tumblr media
Seeing the smile slowly leave Ross’ face made Emily step in, “Joey, quit it! Our babies wouldn’t say that, sorry Ross.”
She tapped Joey on the nose as a means of chastising him before easing herself up and heading into the kitchen for a drink, despite just sitting down.
Just as Emily reaches the fridge, a very loved up Rachel and Paolo walk in discussing their planned upcoming weekend away.
“Honey, you can say it. It’s Poconos. Poconos. It’s like ‘poke a nose’.”
Rachel playfully reaches up and pokes Paolo’s nose which encourages him to indulge in more PDA much to Ross’s disgust.
“Ahh, poke, a nose…”
Paolo runs his nose over Rachel’s and then kisses her deeply, making the guys chorus, “Bluh, bluh, bluh….”
Once Paolo is out of earshot, the girls all huddle around the kitchen table to discuss Rachel’s relationship.
“So, did I hear Poconos?”
Rachel can barely keep the smile from her face, “Yes. My sister is giving us her place for the weekend.”
“Whoo-hoo! First weekend away together.”
“That sounds amazing, it’s so beautiful up there and so romantic.” Emily sighs, she sneaks a glance over at Joey wishing he would surprise her with a romantic trip away.
They know that with the babies coming, they can’t but it would be nice for them to get away for an entire weekend alone before they come.
The guys can’t help but listen in and Chandler rolls his eyes hearing the news, “It’s just a weekend, big deal.”
Ross is frustrated and annoyed because he wants to be with Rachel so badly, “Wasn’t this supposed to be just a fling? Shouldn’t it be flung by now?”
Rachel sighs indulgently, not knowing what Ross has said, “We are way past the ‘fling’ thing here. I mean, I’m feeling things that I’ve only read about in Danielle Steel books, y’know. I mean, when I’m with him, I’m just totally, totally…”
Ross is rocking on his seat, “Nauseous, I’m physically nauseous… What am I supposed to do, huh? Call Immigration? I could call Immigration.”
*F*R*I*E*N*D*S
The excitement of the day soon catches up with Emily and her, Chandler and Joey decide to call it a night. Ever the hostess, Monica doesn’t let them leave without one of the many lasagnas she’s made.
Joey wraps his arm around Emily’s shoulders letting her rest against his body as he guides her across the hallway to their apartment.
“I love babies with their little baby shoes and their little baby toes and little baby hands…” Joey nuzzles into Emily’s hair and squeezes her a little tighter, making Chandler grimace.
“Okay, you’re gonna have to stop that… forever.”
“I think it’s sweet,” says Emily, kissing Joey’s cheek.
He unlocks the door and the trio enter the apartment, Joey throws his keys onto the table which promptly collapses. Emily doesn’t bat an eyelid and merely heads straight for their bedroom, wanting to get into her comfortable jammies as quickly as possible.
“Need a new table.” Joey says, staring at the broken wood.
“You think?” Chandler sasses back.
Joey and Chandler sit knee to knee, resting the family-sized lasagna over their legs as they slowly eat their way through it. Emily is over on the couch reading her baby books, looking more like a student revising for an upcoming exam.
“So just because it was my table, I have to buy a new one?” Chandler raises an eyebrow with his fork pointed at himself.
“That’s the rule,” Joey nods and takes another bite of lasagna.
“What rule? There’s no rule. If anything, you owe me a table.” He points his fork at his best friend before taking another bite.
“How’d you get there?”
“Well I believe this piece of furniture was fine until you and Em had a breakfast adventure…”
Emily has the good grace to blush and sink her face further into the pages to avoid eye contact with Chandler, knowing all too well about the breakfast adventure.
Joey smirks, remembering that morning, “You uhh, you knew about that?”
“Well let’s just say the impressions you made in the butter left little to the imagination.” He sasses.
Joey scratches his neck nervously, “Sorry about that. Okay, well how about we split it?”
“And buy it together? Do you think we’re ready for something like that?” Chandler sits up nervously.
“Yeah, why not?” He shrugs, not understanding what the big deal is.
“It’s a big commitment. What if one of us wants to move out?”
“Are you moving out?”
“I’m not moving out! Look, it’s just with my last roommate Kip-“
“Ugh, I know all about Kip.” Joey sighs and gets up from his seat.
“Look, we bought a hibachi together, then he ran off and got married and things got pretty ugly.”
Joey turns to face Chandler, “Well let me ask you something. Was Kip a better roommate than me?”
The discussion is too much for Emily’s nerves and she suddenly snaps, “Oh for godssake, you two! You’re driving me crazy! Look, Joey, stop being a baby. Chandler, me and Joey will split the new table with you, a third each. Okay? Good! Now I’m going to bed before I end up screaming.”
She climbs into bed and takes some time finding a comfortable position to lie in and not half an hour later, Joey gets into bed beside her. He curves his body around hers, careful not to disturb or jostle her too much and wraps his arms around her waist.
Through the darkness, Emily asks him, “You done being petty?”
“Yeah,” He kisses her neck, “Get some sleep.”
He waits until she drifts off to sleep before scooching down the bed level with her bump.
“Hey babies, it was so amazing seeing you two today. I gotta tell ya, it was a big surprise finding out there’s two of ya in there but I can’t wait to meet you guys. I love you both so much…”
*F*R*I*E*N*D*S
Emily’s POV
We’re all in Central Perk, well all of us except Phoebe. Our conversation has turned to talking about my pregnancy, as it so frequently does these days, and specifically whether or not me and Joey have started thinking of baby names yet.
Rachel has just brought me another blueberry muffin, I can’t get enough of them at the moment, and even though she’s working, she continues to buzz around not wanting to miss out on the conversation.
“It’s hard because I really wanna know what the second baby is, that way their names can be linked, y’know?”
Joey presses his hand over my bump in a way that’s so sweet yet possessive, it sends a shiver down my spine, “I already know what we’re namin’ the boy baby.”
I almost snap my neck turning so fast, “Do you?”
“Yeah, Joey.” Everyone groans while Joey tries to explain, “No, no, hear me out. My dad is called Joey, I’m Joey, it’s only right that my son is called Joey. We’ve gotta carry on the family tradition!”
Okay, that is so not what I had in mind but I do understand that he wants to continue with his family traditions which is kinda adorable.
“I don’t see why not, I like the idea of keeping up family traditions.”
“Yeah, but wouldn’t that make the baby, Joey the Third?”
I physically shudder hearing Chandler’s words which makes Monica and Ross giggle. When it’s worded like that it does sound kind of ridiculous but the idea of a mini Joey is just too cute to resist.
Phoebe then walks in and just from her face and how she’s holding herself I can tell she’s very distracted and on edge. We all cheerily greet her but she merely responds, “fine!” as she sits herself down on the couch next to Chandler.
It’s so rare for Phoebe to be so on edge or upset, she’s usually the one boosting our spirits and cleansing auras when we’re feeling low.
“Phoebe, what’s the matter?” Monica asks.
“Nothing! I’m sorry, I’m just, I’m out of sorts.”
Chandler straightaway tries to make light of things, “Oh, well, you can use some of my sorts. I rarely use them.”
Joey lifts his hand from my bump and checks his watch, “Hey, Chandler. That table place closes at 7. Come on.”
He turns back to me as he gets up from his seat and grabs his coat, “you sure you don’t wanna come, Em?”
I catch the open collar of his flannel shirt and pull him in a little closer and gently kiss his lips, “I’m sure, but please hurry back.”
From behind me I can hear Monica asking Phoebe again what’s wrong as she sits down next to her on the couch. I kiss Joey again and join them, wanting to know what’s wrong with our friend.
Phoebe looks around to make sure Rachel is out of earshot, “Alright, you know Paolo?”
Straightaway Ross drawls, “I’m familiar with his work, yes.”
“He made a move on me.”
My blood instantly boils, I glance up to see Joey and Chandler stop in their tracks and head back over to us with Joey sitting on the arm of the couch next to me, “Whoa, the store’ll be open tomorrow.”
We all form a supportive huddle around Phoebe so she can tell us her story.
“Well he came in for a massage…” She goes on to describe how Paolo essentially groped her. “…And all of a sudden, his hands weren’t the problem anymore…”
“Was it…?” Monica asks, not so subtly alluding to what Phoebe was implying.
“Oh, Boy Scouts could have camped under there.”
“That gross son of a bitch!” The words were out before I could stop them, “sorry, sorry.”
“But I dealt with it like a professional.” Phoebe describes how she wrenched the towel from under Paolo so he crashed to the floor in a heap of naked limbs and broken English.
“Oooh…”
Hearing us all chorus, Rachel comes running over fearing she’s missing out on the gossip, “ooooh what?”
Thinking quickly Phoebe responds, “Oooh-ma Thurman!”
“Yeah the actress!” I chime in, Rachel looks a little confused and disappointed but at least she bought it, and heads back over to the counter.
“So what are you gonna do?” Chandler asks.
“You have to tell. You have to! It’s your moral obligation as a friend and as a woman. I think it’s a feminist issue. Right, guys? Guys?”
Of course Ross would say that. I love him to pieces but knowing he’s trying to use Phoebe’s upset as leverage to try and win over Rachel just irritates me.
“Feminist issue!” Joey agrees, as does Chandler.
“Ugh, she is gonna hate me!”
“Yeah, well.”
“Shut up Ross,” I’ve had enough and take Phoebe’s hand, “Pheebs, she won’t hate you, she needs to know this. I would want someone to tell me if Joey was being a pig.”
*F*R*I*E*N*D*S
Today has been eventful and I’m super grateful to sink into bed. It takes me a while to get comfortable but once I do it doesn’t take long for me to allow myself to fully relax. I can feel myself just beginning to drift off when Joey’s voice rumbles in a deep whisper from behind me.
“Em, about what happened today…”
“Yeah?” I open my eyes and look over my shoulder slightly.
Tumblr media
“You don’t think I would do that, do you? Y’know, cheat?”
I can’t have this conversation with my back turned to him. I gently ease myself over so we’re lying face to face. Wanting to be closer I hook my thigh over his hip, shuffling and adjusting my position until I get myself comfortable.
“Honestly? I don’t know whether it’s my hormones but the thought does worry me a little bit.”
It’s true. I used to joke about it in work that one of the downsides of dating the hottest guy in NYC is that every girl wants a piece of him.
“Em, I would-“
“I sometimes think that this is all too much. You’re a gorgeous guy Joey, every time we go out damn near every woman we go past checks you out.” I say, looking up at him. “You could have any of them, but you’re with me and soon there’s gonna be two babies. It’s a lot to deal with and I just, I wouldn’t blame you if you wanted something or someone else.”
We’re still young, in our early twenties and soon we’ll be juggling parenthood. Logically I know it’s just the hormones but I can’t help but feel vulnerable. He cups my cheek and looks into my eyes. Even though it’s almost completely dark in the bedroom, I can see the love in his innocent eyes.
“Don’t get mad, but yeah, it’s definitely the hormones.” He rubs my cheek with his thumb. “You’re amazing, you’re beautiful and you’re all mine. I don’t want or need anyone else. I love you.”
He brushes the hair from the side of my face and leans in to kiss me so softly that I can’t help but sigh.
“I love you too, Joey, so much.” I say, trying not to cry at his words. I take a deep breath and force out a joke, that's not really a joke. “Now let me get some sleep, it’s no joke carrying twins.”
*F*R*I*E*N*D*S
Third person POV
The next morning Joey and Chandler finally make it to the furniture store to try and find a new table. They’ve been looking at the same selection for the past hour, still unable to decide and Joey is at his wits’ end.
“Will you just pick one?! Pick one. Here, how about that one?” He points to a metal table and chair set that’s clearly patio furniture.
“That’s patio furniture.” Chandler says, putting his hands on his hips.
“So what? Like people will come in and think, uh oh, I’m outside again!” Joey says, throwing his hands out slightly.
“Fine! What about the birds?” Chandler reasons, pointing to a homely looking set.
“Eh, Em wouldn’t like it, besides birds don’t really say ‘hello, sit here. Eat something.’ Y’know?” He says, knowing what his girlfriend would and wouldn’t like.
“Okay, you pick something?” He gestures around the store.
“Alright, how about the ladybugs?”
Chandler stares at the furniture then back at Joey like he’s lost his mind, “Oh, so forget about the birds, but big red insects suggest fine dining?”
“Fine! You wanna get the birds? Get the birds!”
“Not like that I won’t.” He turns his back and quietly murmurs, “Kip would’ve liked the birds…” Earning himself a death glare from Joey.
*F*R*I*E*N*D*S
“So, what d’ya think?” Chandler asks.
“I think it’s the most beautiful table I’ve ever seen.” Replies Ross with eyes full of awe.
Chandler proudly pats the edge of the gleaming new foosball table that he, Joey and Emily finally settled on, “I know.”
Monica turns to Emily as she leans against the kitchen counter with a look that says ‘boys will be boys’, “And you agreed to this?”
“Yup. We’ve wanted a table like this since we were kids.” She crosses her arms with a smile. “Yeah it’s not practical but it’s so cool!”
“So how is this gonna work? Are you gonna balance the plates on these little guys’ heads?” She raises an eyebrow.
“Who cares? We’ll eat at the sink. Come on, let’s have a game, Chan and me against the Gellers, Em keep score.”
Monica, being the ultra competitive woman that she is, quickly takes control from Ross and scores a swift goal against the boys.
“Score! You suck!”
Emily barks out a laugh but quickly covers it with a cough, “Ahem, excuse me, hormones.”
*F*R*I*E*N*D*S
The game between the boys versus Monica and Ross is still going, although it's really Monica versus the boys as Ross is beyond useless. Em has given up keeping score, having lost count and interest once Phoebe joined them, filling them all in about Rachel and Paolo.
“I think she took it pretty well. You know, Paolo’s over there right now, so…”
“You did the right thing Pheebs, she needed to know she's dating a pig.” She says, rubbing her friend's shoulder.
Monica looks up briefly from the table, “Yeah, Em’s right. We should get over there and see if she’s okay. Just one second…” She shoves Ross out of the way and scores yet another goal, “Whoo! Score! Come on Pheebs, Em are you coming?”
Joey looks at Emily with big brown eyes and a pouting lower lip, “Whoa, wait a minute,” he catches hold of her hips, “Are you not gonna console me? I need cheering up.”
“Joey, she kicked your ass, can’t it wait half an hour?” She practically begs, wanting to see the drama. “I really wanna see Paolo get his ass dumped.”
“Yeah okay.” He says, understanding her want but still keeps his lip out.
Emily leans up and kisses Joey’s pouting lower lip before she follows Monica and Phoebe out to the other apartment.
“Whew!” Ross wipes his brow as though he’s just played a real soccer game, “Well, looks like, uh, we kicked your butts.”
“No, no, no. SHE kicked our butts.” Joey corrects him, “You could be on the olympic ‘Standing There’ team.”
“Come on, two on one.” Ross picks up the ball to start another game when Chandler catches hold of it.
“What are you still doing here? She just broke up with the guy, now you swoop in!” He says, gesturing to the door.
“What? Now?” His eyes widen.
“Yes! Now is when you swoop! You’ve gotta make sure that when Paolo walks outta there, the first guy Rachel sees is you. She’s gotta know you’re everything he’s not. You’re like the Anti-Paolo.”
“My catholic friend is right. Look, she’s distraught, you’re there for her. You pick up the pieces, and then you usher in ‘The Age Of Ross.’” He wraps his arm around Ross and they both stare off poignantly into the distance which just confuses Joey.
*F*R*I*E*N*D*S
From their vantage point on the couch, Emily, Monica and Phoebe watch Rachel toss Paolo’s entire suitcase full of clothes off of the balcony onto the busy sidewalk below.
Ross comically and not so subtly creeps in hoping not to be seen and hoping he’s not missed any of the action, “how’s it going?”
“Don’t stare,” Monica admonishes, “Okay, she’s just finished throwing his clothes off the balcony. Now there’s just a lot of gesturing and arm-waving. That is either, ‘how could you?’ or, ‘enormous breasts!’”
“I think she’s being too soft on him. Hell, if Joey cheated on me, I’d be throwing him over the balcony.”
Everyone stops and looks at Emily who is on the verge of tears.
Being the closest, Phoebe reaches out and takes Emily’s hand, “Hey, it’s okay. Joey wouldn’t cheat on you.”
“Ooh, here he comes.”
The group quickly breaks up and acts as though they hadn’t just witnessed the breakup. Ross, Monica and Phoebe loiter around the kitchen while Emily remains on the couch, now laying down and giving the death glare to a now very sheepish Paolo.
“Uhh, I am, uhh, to say goodbye.”
“Okay, bye-bye.”
Emily snaps her fingers and gains Paolo’s attention, “Paolo, sei un maiale disgustoso. Spero che i tuoi testicoli cadano. Capire?”
Paolo gulps and nods, “Si.”
Monica’s next to deliver another verbal blow to the shell-shocked Italian, “Paolo. I really hate you for what you did to Rachel. But I still have five of these, so heat it at 375 until the cheese bubbles.” She dumps a tray of lasagna into his hand without looking at him.
Ross is standing at the door which he opens for Paolo, “I just wanna tell you and I think I speak for everyone when I say…” and he shuts the door with a huge grin of satisfaction.
Tumblr media
Noticing how spooked Paolo seemed after his words with Emily, Monica can’t help but ask, “Uh, Emily? What on earth did you say to him?”
“I may have politely told him that he’s a pig and that I hope his testicles fall off.” She pauses and sits up slightly, looking at her friends. “Why, was I too rude?”
Ross felt a little sympathetic, despite loving her words, “Gotta say, that explains the haunted look in his eyes.”
They all smile but then notice Rachel is still standing out on the balcony alone, Ross takes it upon himself to be the one who comforts her. Rachel is completely crushed and looks exhausted when Ross joins her on the balcony, without hesitation, he envelopes her in a hug trying to offer her as much comfort as possible.
“Listen, you deserve so much better than him. I mean you, you should be with a guy who knows what he has when he has you.”
Rachel pulls back from his arms a little to look him in the eyes. “Oh Ross…”
“What?” He asks, full of hope and expectancy, wanting her to just tell him she feels the same way.
“I’m so sick of guys! I don’t wanna look at another guy. I don’t wanna think about another guy. I don’t even want to be near another guy.”
Ross is taken aback by her statements, rather hoping that she would fall into his arms and wanna be with him.
“Oh Ross, you’re so great.”
He hugs her again even though he’s a little shocked and kinda pissed that she doesn’t seem to realize that he’s everything Paolo’s not.
She breaks away from Ross and climbs back inside the apartment where she’s met by Rachel and Phoebe, “Are you okay?”
Rachel sighs heavily, “medium. Any cookies left?”
She moves around to the couch where Emily is still laying down whilst Phoebe goes and fetches the rest of the cookies.
“Oh gosh, sorry Rach, here sit down.” As Emily scoots up, she suddenly grabs her bump, “Woah, my god.”
“What? Are you okay?” Rachel says, sitting down and grabbing the pregnant woman's arms, ready to help her.
“Yeah… I… I think one of the babies just kicked…”
“Oh my god, oh my god! Ross! Go and get the boys now!” Monica barks, rushing to Emily’s side.
The girls help her sit up and get her comfortable while Ross dashes over to the other apartment, seconds later Joey and Chandler come rushing in to be at Emily’s side.
“Hey! The babies! Are they okay?!” He’s alarmed and panicked and completely out of breath.
Emily takes his hand and places it over where she felt the movement last. Joey frowns a little but as the soft flutters connect with his palm, a beaming grin lights up his face.
“Oh my god…”
“Is everything okay?!” Chandler’s still alarmed, terrified for his little sister and nephew’s well-being.
“Dude, it’s like the most amazing popcorn going on in there. Can he feel Em?”
Emily nods, too emotional to speak. Chandler kneels by her side and copies Joey placing his palm against the bump.
“Wait, I don’t feel anything.”
“Lemme see.” He replaces Chandler’s hand with his own and sure enough the babies begin kicking again. “They’re doing it, Chan. Try again.”
Chandler does so but as soon as his hand replaces Joey’s, the kicking stops. “Hey! I’m your uncle Chandler, don’t be rejecting me!”
Prompt Request/Joey Tribbiani Friends Quote Prompts
(Thomas Hunt x OC*Amanda) with the prompts "Everything's gonna be fine. It's just a crush." and "These are just feelings. They'll go away." and a misunderstanding between the two. As requested by Anonymous.
(Thomas x Amanda) in a Choices Red Carpet Diaries/The Royal Romance one shot
A/N *Squeal* Nonny you must know how much I love secret crushes between these two. Let's have this one occur in Book 2 of RCD when Thomas is filming The Last Duchess in Cordonia. This idea got away from me. It probably should have been divided into two parts, but I couldn’t decide where to cut it. Anyway, let’s get these two together. 😏
Foolproof
Cordonia, private beach near the royal palace...
Maxwell and Amanda sneaked out of an exceptionally boring council meeting, grabbed their swimsuits, and escaped to the beach. As the sun began to set, the two were sitting on the sand, letting the waves wash over them.
"So," Maxwell began, reclining back on his elbows, "when are you going to Castelsarreillan?"
Amanda drew her knees up to her chest and rested her chin on them. "I don't know." She averted her eyes from her closest friend's. "I don't think I'll go this time."
"Why not?" He asked. "You love all the behind the scenes movie magic."
"I've visited a lot of Thomas's sets. Missing this one isn't that big of a deal." She explained.
"Yeah, but he invited you to come." Maxwell pushed himself upright and spun around to where the waves hit his back and he could face her. He tilted his head in question.
"He only did that since he is filming here." Amanda explained. "It's just a courtesy."
Maxwell remained silent for a moment as he closely studied her face. With their years of friendship, he prided himself on figuring out what she really meant instead of what she said.
"Amanda," he pondered. "Did you two have a fight?"
She shook her head. "Of course not. Thomas and I have too good of a friendship to allow an argument to fester unresolved."
He softly gasped at what was truly going on. "Amanda, do you..."
Her brow furrowed in confusion. "Do I what?"
He leaned closer to whisper his theory, as if they were not alone on the private stretch of sandy beach. "Do you like like Thomas?"
"Like like?" She began to laugh. "Are we back in junior high again?"
"It feels like it." His dimpled grin appeared. "Especially if you aren't telling him you have fallen for him."
Amanda tried to deny it. She took one look at Maxwell's triumphant expression and flopped onto her back. Her fingers dug into the wet sand as the foam of the waves brushed along her sides. "Why do you do this to me?"
His grin grew even bigger while he teased her. "You love Thomas!"
She lifted her hands to cover her face and sat up spitting wet sand out of her mouth. She rinsed her hands in the next wave and tried to get the rest off her face. "Stop it! These are just feelings. They'll go away."
He continued to tease her in a sing song manner then ended up spluttering when she pushed him back into the water. "I suppose I took it too far."
"You suppose right." She tried to keep an irritated anger but ended up laughing at him. "Look, it's no big deal. I just don't feel like visiting him right now. Some time away will make me see that these feelings aren't that strong."
"This is such a big deal." He argued. "You need to tell him."
"Not gonna happen." She grinned at him and got up. Amanda held her hand out to him. "Let's get out of here. I'm starving."
Maxwell grasped her hand and jumped up. His mind was whirling with possibilities as they dried off. "We need to go."
"I'm hurrying." Amanda's muffled voice came from under her shirt.
"To Castelsarreillan." He corrected.
Her eyes were wide when she finally pulled it over her head. "Max, listen to me. I'm not going nor am I telling Thomas how I really feel." She bent down to gather their towels and sunblock. "Everything's gonna be fine. It's just a crush." She smiled up at him. "I'm pretty sure I'm not the first nor the last person to fall for Thomas Hunt."
"That may be true but he likes you." He countered.
"Yes he does, as a friend." She stressed. "And I'm fine with that."
Maxwell took the beach bag from her and slung his arm around her shoulders. A grin formed on his tanned face that made her somewhat nervous.
"You sure you're fine with unrequited love?" He asked.
"I am." She promised.
"And you're cool with seeing him and playing the part of a friend." He prodded.
"I'm not playing any kind of part. I do care for him as a friend." She explained.
"Good." He squeezed her in a side hug. "Then there isn't anything to worry about."
She narrowed her eyes in suspicion. "Right. Nothing to worry about."
**************
The Royal Palace...
Five days later, Maxwell offered to drive Amanda back to St Orella.
"Not ready to go back to Ramsford?" She teased.
"Savannah and Bertrand are still going strong in the newlywed phase. I can't crash that love nest yet." His smile was warm as he talked about his family. "My work is done with them."
She laughed. "True. And I suppose after your work with Riley and Liam, there really is no need to hang around the palace."
"See. You get it." He carried some of her bags for her. "My matchmaking skills with love is both a burden and a pleasure."
"Dare I say it?" She taunted.
Maxwell grinned. "Dare, dare!"
"This might be your superpower." She giggled as a look of pure wonder came over his face.
"It is!" He put her bags in the trunk of his convertible. "Even you respect my awesome supernatural ability."
They drove out of the capital, each content with nothing but the radio as background noise. Maxwell's phone vibrated and he glanced at the text message.
"Eyes on the road, please." Amanda slipped on her sunglasses and reclined back.
"I am the epitome of safe driving." He muttered while texting with one hand.
"Sure you are." Amanda closed her eyes. "On that note, I'm going to take a nap so that when we die I’ll enter into the spiritual realm in my sleep."
"That's a good idea." He said, a smile forming as he read the response to his text. "Maybe I should give it a try."
She swatted his arm. "Can I trust you to get me home in one piece?"
"Always." Maxwell set his phone down after a few emojis and a GIF were sent. "You're my best friend. I’ll always do what I can to make life the best for you."
Amanda yawned behind her hand. "I know. You're great." She closed her eyes and sighed with the breeze blowing and the early morning sun shining down on her. "Thanks for offering to drive me home."
"No problem." Maxwell leaned over to make certain she truly had her eyes closed. Instead of merging left on the highway heading northwest to St Orella (a little over 490 kilometers away) he eased to the right.
Castelsarreillan. About 570 kilometers northeast from the capital.
He hummed softly to the music while he settled in for the next few hours.
*************
Castelsarreillan....
"Operation Stormy Night has commenced." Addison whispered.
Holly glanced up from her notes. "When do we begin step two?"
Jessica leaned forward. "Matt, Ryan, and Seth just left." She checked over her shoulder to make certain no one could overhear her. "They're going to get the rooms for everyone."
"Shannon told Chris." Holly muttered when a cameraman walked past. "He's on board and talking to one of the grips."
"I hid all the linens." Addison admitted.
When the two looked at her in shock, she shrugged. "There were three closets filled in that castle. I couldn't take the chance that he would stick her in a guestroom."
"We have to make certain we all lock our doors before we leave." Holly stressed. "If we don't, then--" she clamped her mouth closed when Thomas exited his trailer.
His foul mood seemed to cause a sense of cautious fear over the film crew.
"Holly? Have you seen where I put my--" he grunted in thanks when she handed him both his coffee mug and his notebook.
Once he was out of earshot, Addison leaned in to whisper once again. "I finished the dress last night."
"I can't wait to see it!" Jessica exclaimed in an excited whisper. She darted a quick look at Thomas. "Hopefully seeing her again will put you know who in a better mood."
"His mood has steadily grown worse each day when he realizes she isn't coming." Holly held up a calendar. "The past two weeks with him have been a--"
"If you three are finished, I would like to get back to the purpose of being here!" Thomas snapped. "Whenever you decide to grace us with your presence, Ms. Clarke."
Jessica winced at his tone and hurried to take her mark next to Chris.
Addison jumped when her phone vibrated again. "Matt got the rooms."
"Now we wait for step three." Holly mouthed.
******************
Nearly three hours later...
Amanda stretched and blinked a couple of times. She sat up, expecting to see the beginning of St Orella's rocky coastline, and gripped the door.
"Maxwell! Where are we?" She turned around to look behind her and saw rolling hills and forests. No Mediterranean Sea in sight.
"Hmm? Oh. Driving." He murmered.
"Yeah, I know you are." She snapped. "Where are you driving?"
"On the road." He replied.
"Max," she rubbed her forehead as that familiar ache pounded in frustration.
"Don't worry." He turned down a two lane road. "I know where I'm going."
"Care to share the destination with the trapped passenger?" Her tone was heavy with sarcasm.
"You'll see." He smiled innocently at her.
"If I see what I think I'm about to see, you and I are going to have--" she gasped when she saw the medieval spires of Castelsarreillan. "MAXWELL PERCIVAL BEAUMONT! HOW DARE YOU--"
"It's rude to ignore an invitation, Amanda." Maxwell scolded.
"You're," she stared at him, completely dumbfounded. "You're lecturing me on rude behavior?! What about you ignoring my wish to--"
"SHH! We're here." He hopped out of the car and walked toward where some trailers were set up.
Amanda dropped her head back. She gazed up at the gray clouds in the sky and silently cursed her luck for becoming friends with pushy, think they know best for everyone, people. She opened the car door and hurried after him.
*************
"Maxwell!" Addison ran up to hug him. "It's so good to see you again!"
He hugged her tight. "I brought someone with me." He winked at her and glanced back, grinning at Amanda coming up from a few yards back. "How goes it here?" He whispered.
"We’re all ready on this end." She whispered back. "Thomas has--"
"Addison!" Thomas yelled. "Where--" he cleared his throat when he noticed who was with her. "Maxwell? Er, good to see you." He glanced around. "Did you come--"
"Alone?" Maxwell finished for him. "Nope. Amanda should have already been here." He looked back over his shoulder. "Ah, there she is, talking to--" he grinned when Thomas brushed past him.
Addison and Maxwell watched the grumpy director walk over to where Amanda was. She had stopped to greet Shannon, cuddling the movie star's five month old baby girl.
"I knew it." Addison whispered. "I knew he like likes her."
Maxwell shared a fist bump with her and turned to greet Holly.
*************
"She's perfect." Amanda said, smiling down at the baby.
"We like her." Shannon teased. "I had hoped she would have Chris's blue eyes, but she got stuck with my brown."
"Which I'm sure he loves." Amanda said. "He's always said you have the most beautiful eyes he has ever seen."
Shannon's smile turned tender. "Chris says a lot of nonsense."
"Are you three staying at the castle with everyone else?" Amanda asked.
"No. With Sophie, we wanted a more structured setting." Shannon explained. "We rented a cottage near town and--" her lips curved in a smile. "Hello professor."
Amanda braced herself and fixed a smile on her face before turning around.
He nodded to Shannon and smiled back at Amanda. "I was beginning to wonder if you were ever going to take me up on my offer to visit."
"We had some council meetings recently." She explained. She handed Shannon her baby back. The actress grinned and left the pair alone with the excuse of needing to change her daughter's diaper.
"I didn't want to bother you while you were working." Amanda gripped her hands together. "I've crashed so many of your productions, that I'm certain you get tired of it."
"If it bothered me, I wouldn't tell you every location nor insist you come along." He put his hands in his pockets, unsure if he should hug her or not. Too much time between greetings has probably passed, he thought.
She stepped forward and hugged him. "You're awfully sweet to indulge my need to see how the magic is created."
He wrapped his arms around her. "It's nice to share this with someone who enjoys it."
She stepped back and motioned with her head to where the next scene was being set. "Care to show me this next part?"
He chuckled and set his hand on her back as they walked over.
"Step four, in three--two--one." Holly muttered.
Maxwell's phone began to vibrate. He stepped away from Holly and answered it. "Hey Bertrand--yeah. I--well I didn't think--but--I can't just--fine."
He turned toward Amanda. "I have to go."
"Oh." Her smile dimmed. "Then we better--"
"I can come back for you this evening." Maxwell interrupted. "There's been a Bertrand meltdown at Ramsford. I gotta go save Savannah and Bartie from his rants over the new set of red pandas I snuck over."
"New red pandas?" Amanda asked. "Where did you--"
"I have my sources." He grinned at her. "I'll be back, if that's okay?" He looked inquiringly at Thomas.
"Of course. Take all the time you need. I was going to do my best to persuade Amanda into having dinner in the castle this evening." Thomas looked down at her and softly smiled.
"I haven't been inside Castelsarreillan since I was a little girl. Kiara's family prefers their more modern residence near their vineyard for court events." Her smile grew bigger. "I would love to have dinner here tonight."
"Great." Maxwell called out a goodbye to Addison as she came out of Jessica’s trailer. "I'll be back unless Bertrand finally kills me." He jogged off.
"What happened?" Addison asked, slipping her cell phone in her pocket.
"Red panda drama." Holly explained.
"Red what now?" Addison stared after Maxwell's retreating form.
"I'll explain later." Holly turned to Thomas. "We're ready when you are, boss."
He broke away from staring at Amanda. "Ready for...er, yes. Let's get to it. I don't like the look of that sky." He called out for another chair to be brought over for her and set it near his own.
She sat down and read through his notes that he handed her. As he waited on the touch ups to makeup and costume to be completed, he leaned over toward her. "I recognize that smile of yours. What have you seen?"
She looked up, startled at his close attention directed on herself. "I know the gathering storm clouds are a concern, but they are the perfect backdrop for this particular scene. It is nothing but frustration and building desire between the duchess and her servant."
He slowly smiled. "You're right." He turned his attention back to his crew and explained the scene to Chris and Jessica.
It only took three takes to get what he needed from the two actors. As everyone quickly moved cameras and equipment back into the nearby portable storage units, Matt and Ryan walked up.
"Amanda, long time no see." Ryan kissed her cheek. "Holly," he called out. "Prepare yourself. We are going out tonight."
Holly cocked an eyebrow. "You and Amanda? How nice."
He softly groaned. "See how little she thinks of me?" He chased after her.
Addison ran into Matt's arms. "Where you taking me Rodriguez?"
"We found a nightclub over in the next town that has passwords required for entrance." He explained. "We heard the owner likes sweets, so I think we have a pretty good chance discovering the hidden--"
"What's today?" Amanda interrupted them.
"Thursday." Addison replied.
"Then tonight's password is canelé." Amanda announced.
"Canelé?" Matt repeated. "What's that?"
"A French pastry." Amanda's eyes lit with mischief. "Since it’s made with rum, Thursday night's have specials on all rum based cocktails."
"I'm already loving this place." Addison tugged on Matt's arm. "We better hurry before Thomas finds something else for us to do."
"I heard that." Thomas muttered as he returned to gather his things.
Unrepentant, Addison giggled and ran off with Matt.
"You two want to join us?" Ryan asked once he returned with Holly. "It sounds like a fun place to go."
"Join you where?" Thomas asked reluctantly.
"He and Matt found a nightclub." Holly explained.
Amanda noticed his disinterest and decided to save him. "I had hoped I could tour the castle after we had dinner."
He smiled at her. "I have been hoping to do the same while here. I've been busy with..." He trailed off when he noticed Holly and Ryan leaning forward in interest. "Shouldn't you both go make yourselves ready?"
"And miss out on a boring, no offense Amanda, history filled evening?" Ryan mocked. "Perish the thought, Hunt."
Thomas ignored him and led Amanda back to the castle.
Holly and Ryan followed behind them. Ryan quickly sent a text, Step four complete enact step five on my mark.
****************
Inside the castle, Castelsarreillan...
"Oh." Amanda said softly as she looked up at the cathedral ceiling. The engaved wood beams met one another in a geometrical form that almost made one dizzy with its intricacies.
The walls were adorned with paintings and tapestries of Cordonian nobles from long ago. Wood floors shined under the various black and gold rugs with the Theron family sigil.
"It's just as beautiful as I remembered." Amanda said to Thomas.
He followed her gaze, studying the various decorations that would add more to the film. "It is."
Inside the main hall, Seth was making Jessica laugh.
"What's so funny?" Ryan asked.
"He thinks he could have made it as a court jester." She replied, laughing even more when he poured another glass of wine for the two of them.
"I'm telling you Iowa, we would have been living here with my talent." He grabbed Amanda's hand and pulled her to the center of the room. "Come on, duchess. Help me prove it to her."
"I don't really think I’m--" Amanda began.
"Seth." Thomas bit out. "Leave her--"
"Hear me out." Seth said. "Stand right there, Amanda, while I bring you a glass of our finest old grape juice." He leaned his head back and placed a full goblet of wine on his forehead. "Don't move." He ordered her.
Everyone held their breath as he slowly limboed his way to her.
With only two steps left, he sneezed.
The glass of wine hit her, breaking and splashing red wine all down the front of her white sundress.
"Amanda, I'm so sorry!" Seth covered his mouth while everyone else exclaimed.
She looked down at herself and tried to waive off his apologies. "It's no big deal."
"Are you hurt?" Thomas asked, when he saw that the goblet had broken at the stem.
She blotted at her chest with a napkin Jessica had brought over. "It's just a small cut." She held the napkin to the spot on her collarbone. She gave him a wry smile. "At least it's been thoroughly disinfected."
Seth quickly smothered his laughter when Thomas glared at him. "I am so, so, so sorry." He repeated.
Addison came downstairs at that moment. "Holly, can I borrow your--what happened?"
"I sneezed a wine glass on her." Seth explained.
"Oh no! You poor---wait, you did what to her?" Addison asked.
Seth shrugged, “I was showing off my acrobatic skills.”
“He left off the word, lack.” Holly corrected. “Seth was showing his lack of acrobatic skills.”
Addison struggled to keep from smiling. She grabbed Amanda’s hand. "Come on, I think I have some clothes you can change into."
Seth and Jessica quickly escaped before Thomas had a chance to unleash his temper.
"I guess we better take Seth with us tonight to keep Thomas out of prison." Ryan loudly whispered.
"A wise decision." Thomas muttered, going up to his chambers to clean up.
***************
Addison led Amanda to a sparsely decorated guest room.
"I keep some dresses on hand in case Seth does something or one of us has to give an interview." She opened up a closet while talking. "I think I have a dress that will fit you."
"I doubt it." Amanda mumbled. "There is no way I can fit into anything you, Holly, or Jessica can. I'm not remotely what one would describe as thin."
Addison grinned. "You have an hourglass figure that I would kill for." She pulled out a dark plum dress. "So many men love that old Hollywood glamour of curvy women like Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe."
"Who?" Amanda asked, laughing. "I need to meet these men."
"Thomas has been known to comment that actresses today shouldn't starve themselves. He's always on the lookout for the next Gina Lollobrigida or Sophia Loren." Addison continued.
"Yeah, but they were curvy and gorgeous." Amanda mumbled. "I'm afraid I have little hope in that department."
Addison placed her hands on her hips "What are you talking about? You’re beautiful! We all think so. Thomas says it whenever he sees you in the news."
"He does?" Amanda blushed. "I mean, he, you--" she closed her eyes. "Let's see that dress."
"Why don't you rinse off, first?" Addison started the shower. "Here's all you'll need." She set a bag of toiletries and makeup on the counter. "While you get ready, I'll try and clean your sundress for you."
She gave Amanda little opportunity to argue as she moved behind her to unzip it.
"Addison, shouldn’t I make sure the new dress will fit--"
"It'll be fine." Addison interrupted. She rushed out of the room, stained dress in her arms, and closed the door behind her.
Amanda walked over to the bed and held the dress up. "Oh no." Her cheeks turned red with how it was designed: low cut bodice, capped sleeves that hung off the shoulders, and knit material to hug every single curve she had.
"Addison!" Amanda cried out.
**************
Thomas returned to the main hall after his own shower to await his dinner date. His eyebrows rose when he noticed all his friends hurrying out the door. Farewells were shouted back at him.
"We'll see you later." Addison said as she dashed down the stairs. "Tell Amanda, I'm sorry, but I had to throw her dress away. It ripped while I scrubbed at the wine stain. She can keep that dress I let her borrow."
"Wait, what--" Thomas stopped speaking as the door was slammed shut.
He slipped his hands into the pockets of his slacks and devoted his solitude to planning all that he wanted to discuss this evening.
**************
30 minutes later in the town of Castelsarreillan...
"Welcome everyone." Maxwell held the door open as his fellow conspirators filed in. "How did it go?"
"Perfectly." Holly replied. "You should have seen our performance."
"Seth especially deserves an award for his Cirque du Soleil talent." Jessica bragged.
Seth bowed. "Thank you. I would like to thank all the little people who I have knocked down to get where I am today."
Maxwell popped open a bottle of champagne. "And the dress?"
"Her new one is going to leave quite an impression on Thomas." Addison winked at him. "I based it on one from the 1961 movie, Come September."
Ryan checked the time. "In less than an hour, the grip Chris talked to will cut the power off in the castle."
Maxwell passed flutes of champagne around. His smile glowed as he held his glass up. "I don't know what I would do without all of you. I would still be trying to convince Amanda to tell Thomas."
"And we would still be suffering with a frustrated in love Thomas." Matt added. "Nothing like a few carefully planned mishaps to draw two people together."
"Better send the text." Holly reminded him. "It started pouring down on our way here."
"On it." Maxwell quickly tapped out a message to Amanda, claiming the storm had hit Ramsford earlier and flooded the main bridge."
*************
Back at Castelsarreillan...
You've reached the award winning author of The Royal Romance, please leave a message after the beep. If this is Amanda, get off the phone and tell Thomas you're madly in love with him. *beep*
Amanda's eyes were wide. "Maxwell! Get rid of that outgoing message! I need to know if I should have someone-" her phone died. "And he has my charger."
She gave up trying to reach her absent friend and hurried downstairs, hoping she didn't make Thomas think she was trying to seduce him in wearing such a dress.
Thomas glanced back over his shoulder when he heard her footsteps, then completely turned around once he saw her in that dress. He forgot about the storm growing worse outside. He thought he might have temporarily forgotten how to speak.
Amanda blushed. "I know." She motioned down at her dress. "This isn't something I would normally wear, but I can't find anything else that will fit."
"You should--"He audibly swallowed. "You should wear something like that more often."
"Really?" She smiled softly when he nodded. "Well, thank you, I think."
"You look, that dress is, the color and all is very becoming." He stuttered.
Her lips curved even more. "Thank you."
He shook himself out of staring at her. "Everything is ready." He placed his hand on her back to guide her to the table he had set, nearly jerking it away when he encountered her warm skin.
"Thomas, you didn't have to go to so much trouble." She thanked him when he held her chair out for her.
“It’s been a long time since we were able to have dinner without anyone else around.” He sat down across from her.
She decided to go ahead and tell him her predicament. “Thomas, I heard from Maxwell before my phone died. He is trapped at Ramsford most likely for the rest of the night.”
He filled her glass with wine. “You are more than welcome to stay here tonight. I don’t want you trying to get out in this storm if you don’t have to.”
“Thank you.” She picked at her food. “I wish I had my luggage with me.”
“You can borrow a shirt from me to sleep in and then we will deal with tomorrow’s clothes when we need to.” He smiled softly when she thanked him again.
Their conversation over dinner centered around what they would each be doing the next few months.
“I was wondering if you might be willing to attend The Last Duchess premiere with me.” Thomas observed her closely.
“Of course.” She took another bite of the strawberry soufflé he had surprised her with. “I’ve always thought they looked exciting.”
He wondered if she had misunderstood why he wanted her to go. “I want you to go as my date for the evening.”
She paused with her spoon still in her mouth. “You...” She set it down. “Are you trying to avoid someone who is wanting to date you?”
“No.” His brow furrowed. “Why would you think that?”
“Because you...” she lowered her eyes. “Well, I...” she couldn’t get her thoughts together. “I’m trying to figure out what’s going on.”
“I’m asking you to be my date for the premiere.” He repeated.
“I see.” She still wasn’t clear on what he had in mind. “I would like to go with you.”
He seemed to relax once she said that. “After the premiere, I plan on taking some time away from Hollywood.” He lifted his wine glass to his lips. “I’m thinking of vacationing in Fiji.”
“Fiji.” She sighed with a smile. “It looks gorgeous in the pictures I’ve seen.”
“We could spend time there without anyone around and enjoy ourselves.” He added.
Her eyes widened. “We?”
He lifted an eyebrow at her surprise. “Yes, I’ll be able to give you the attention I should once I’m done with the film.”
“You want me to go with you to Fiji to begin a romantic relationship?” She asked, trying to keep the shock out of her tone.
“Yes. Amanda why are you--”
The power went out. They both stilled when thunder rumbled nearby.
“Thank goodness we had candles at the table.” She stood up and walked toward the direction of an end table she had noticed earlier that had a candelabra on it.
She returned with it, lighting the five candles by one of the lit ones. “Shall we look for more candles?”
Though he wished to continue their conversation, he decided not to do so and took the ornate silver candlestick she offered. “Where do you suggest we search first?”
She turned around and led the way to the study.
He smiled softly as he followed her. “Do you believe candles are stored in the desk or are you simply wanting to see what books are in there?”
Amanda laughed. “You know me too well.” She opened the door and stepped inside. “But, it doesn’t hurt to look here first for the candles.”
They found two more sets of candles in a small den and in the kitchen. After deciding that those were more than enough to get them through the night, they went upstairs to find a guestroom for her to sleep in.
“Why are all these locked?” Amanda asked when she tried to open the eighth door they had come to.
“I don’t know.” He muttered, trying the one across form her. “This entire wing is locked, save for my room.”
“I wonder why Addison locked the room I changed in.” She tried to open it again. “There weren’t any linens on the bed, but I’m certain we can find a closet with the--” she opened a narrow door and stared at the empty shelves. “Or not.”
Thomas stopped her from going toward another wing of the castle. “We’ve only been using this wing during our stay. If these are all locked, then I’m certain the others are elsewhere.”
“I guess I could search for a couch and--”
“You’ll stay in my room.” He took her hand and tugged her along. “I refuse to allow you to sleep on some narrow antique couch downstairs.”
Once inside his chambers, he knelt down before the fireplace and started a warm, cheery fire. He blew his candle out and decided to finish their conversation from earlier.
“Amanda, why were you so surprised at my plans to take you to Fiji?”
She set her candelabra down on a chest along with the spare candles they had discovered. “Thomas, you've never shown any...desire... for us to enter into an intimate relationship.”
“Never shown?” He murmured. “I’ve invited you to everything of mine.”
“You have.” She agreed. “But I assumed it was meant as a friendship.”
“Why would I insist you come to every location for weeks at a time if I only wanted us to be platonic?” He asked. “You’ve seen me with those I consider friends. I don’t try and spend every moment I can with them.”
Amanda’s lips parted in surprise. “I thought we were close friends. I never dreamed you were getting to know me with the intention to one day date.”
“We have been dating.” Thomas corrected.
“We have?” Her brow furrowed in thought. “ But, you’ve never tried to kiss me.”
“I was attempting to follow the type of courtships you told me Cordonians have.” He told her. “The way you described the typical noble relationship, there seemed to be little physical contact. When you never kissed me, I assumed that was how it was supposed to be in the beginning.”
Amanda dropped her head back. “If I had known we were dating, I would have initiated a kiss.” She ran her fingers through her hair in frustration. “My previous relationships had that regardless of how serious it was.”
Thomas rubbed the back of his neck. “I see. Then this has been one misunderstanding after another.”
She sat down at the foot of the canopied bed and lowered her eyes. “Why didn’t you say anything before now?” She forced herself to look up. “I mean, why do you wish to get serious now?”
“I wanted to make certain that what I felt wasn’t fleeting. Living in different countries can strain a relationship, especially one that is weak to begin with.” He explained.  “I know without a doubt that I want to be with you.”
“So all this time, you---” she couldn’t believe it. “You felt what I felt?” She began to pace before the fireplace, trying to see what she had missed all these months.
“That all depends on what you felt.” He stepped closer to her, blocking her path. “How do you feel about me?”
She looked up into his dark eyes and moved even closer. “I want to be in a serious relationship with you.” Her hands settled on his chest when his arms wrapped around her waist. “You made me fall in love each time I visited you.”
“Good.” He lowered his head and pressed a tender kiss to her lips. “You did the same to me.” He slid his hands down her back, urging her closer as he kissed her once more.
Amanda laughed in the midst of his kiss.
He dropped his head down to kiss her neck and shoulder. “May I ask why you are laughing at such a moment?”
“I was worried earlier tonight that you would think I was trying to seduce you with the dress and being forced to remain here.” She tilted her head  to give him better access. “It seems silly now that I know you thought we were dating.”
He captured her lips again in a heated exchange. “I’m grateful that we have it straightened out.” Thomas gently cupped her cheek. “I think it is past time we made our relationship official.”
She wound her arms around his neck. “No waiting on the premiere then?”
“No.” He murmured against her mouth. “No more waiting on anything.”
*************
The next morning...
The group of conspirators returned to the castle. They had the grip turn the power back on and cautiously searched the downstairs. When they saw no signs of anyone having slept in one of the rooms, they made their way upstairs.
“It’ s so quiet.” Addison whispered. “Do you think they’re still here?”
“Knowing Amanda’s preferred sleep schedule, I bet they are still in bed.” Maxwell whispered back. He had her luggage in his arms.
They all stopped outside Thomas’s door.
“Should we knock?” Matt asked.
“Maybe we should listen at the door in case they are--” Ryan let out a grunt when Holly elbowed him. “What?”
She rolled her eyes and knocked three times in quick secession.
When no answer came, she knocked louder.
Thomas opened up his door some, yawning. “What is it?”
“We, um, were wondering if Amanda needed her bags.” Holly stepped back to let Maxwell hand them over.
“I’m sure she does.” Thomas mumbled, running a hand through his mussed hair. “Anything else?”
“Did you have a good time last night?” Addison asked.
“Yes, of course.” Thomas replied. He began to shut the door, pausing when Addison held it open. “What is it?” He bit out, irritated at her actions.
“Did anything happen last night?” She couldn’t keep the excitement out of her voice.
“Yes, it did.” His lips curved slightly. “The power went out.”
“And?” Maxwell prompted.
Thomas quirked an eyebrow at him. “And we did what any normal couple would do. We retired for the evening.” he shut the door in their faces.
“I was really hoping for more detail.” Addison whined. “I just knew that--”
“It worked.” Ryan interrupted, smiling at the closed door.
“How do you know that?” Holly demanded.
“He said they did what any normal couple would do.” He turned toward his friends. “Couple. For the first time, Thomas referred to himself and Amanda as a couple.”
The one where Kayla gets a job (1)
Tumblr media
It's been a while since Kayla moved in with Joey and Chandler. After some time of adjustments (Kayla bumbed in on Joey and a date he had while he was making out with her in the living room and Chandler once got in the bathroom while Kayla was there showering) the three enjoyed their new living situation. Due to Kaylas unemployment, the flat was always tidy and clean, nearly as clean as Monica's, and there was always something to eat in the fridge - which both Chandler and Joey enjoyed a lot. Kayla, therefore, was thankful to her new roommates that they'll let her live in the living room. She even got a drawer in Joeys room for her stuff.
Joey and her friendship instantly bloomed as she moved in with them.
Chandler always made her day with his sarcastic comments, and she quickly felt, platonically, for his sense of humour.
Kayla also enjoyed the company of the rest of the group. Kayla and Monica meet up a lot to cook together for the group. She shared some similarities with Rachel, like interest in books and, of course, talking about nice-looking guys. Phoebe and her developed a deep connection and friendship because of their interest in spirituality.
Kayla loved to learn new stuff, which Ross took thankfully to teach her about dinosaurs and the development of the mankind.
Kayla loved her new life and all the people that she had met so far.
On the other hand, she often felt useless when everyone else was working, and she was the only left at home.
Being alone in Chandlers and Joeys appartement, there was plenty of time for Kayla to think about her parents. As she moved her stuff into the drawer one day. She found the totebag full of pictures and little notes from her parents. Her only belongings she brought with her from Italy. Tears immediately filled her eyes. Going through some of the notes and pictures, Kayla tried to hold on to her tears but couldn't stop  them. She cried while holding a picture of her parents and her in front of a beautiful beach in her hand. She pressed it hardly onto her chest. Causing her to sob.
"Is everything... okay?"Chandler asked her. He was standing in the frame of the door.
"Sorry... I didn't mean to... I just thought I was.. alone.. I just... Me...I... I just miss my parents..."Kayla whined, tears running over her red cheeks. She tried to whip them away, but as she did so, new ones just rushed down her face.
"It's okay."Chandler said in a soft voice, kneeing down to her on the floor to pull her into a tight hug, which caused Kayla to sob even more.
"You shouldn't be ashamed of missing your parents or crying in front of me. It's natural. If you want to you can give them a call." Chandler said to build her up.
"There is nobody I can call.."she said under her sobbing while she left the hug.
"Chandler, as nice as your ideas is, my parents aren't alive anymore."
Dammit... Stupid self... Chandler thought to himself.
"I sorry... I didn't know."he said while nodding his head.
"Where should you know from... See.. I made the situation even more uncomfortable... You just wanted to build me up, and I made you uncomfortable..."
"Nah.. I already knew I was not so good with the advice. But can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?"Chandler said in hope of breaking the tension.
Kayla giggled under the last few tears.
"It worked on you." Now both giggled.
"Loosing your parents I your age must be rough. But you seem like a strong person. Moving away and starting a new life in a new country is something only a thouh person is capable of. If you want to talk about it, I'll be there, and if you don't, that's fine with me too." Chandler said while both of them stood up.
"There isn't much to say. They got unlucky and lost their life's in a car crash. But thanks for your offer." Kayla hugged Chandler, her head resting on his chest.
"And thanks for making me laugh even just a little." she mumbled in his chest with a smile on her face. Chandlers lips formed a smile too. He tightens his grip of her.
"With pleasure." Chandler answered, resting his head on hers.
"I decided to apply for a job." Kayla said one afternoon when everyone gathered in Central Perk.
"Oh, that's great! What job do you want to apply for?"Phoebe asked.
"I think I want to work as a social worker again. I loved my job in Italy, helping others to find their own way, and being a piece of their support system was always my vocation." she said confidentiality while putting her arms on the hips.
"You're feeling ready to hit the career road again? You moved here a couple of weeks ago, and isn't it a bit early after... nah... you know.. Do you feel capable to carry sorrows from others right now?" Joey said with a concern.
Everyone but Chandler curiously looked at Kayla.
"I am more than ready, Joey. I miss having a task. I can do more than just buy groceries and clean up after you and Chandler."
Chandler smirked.
"I think searching for a job is a good idea, Kayla. We can work here together. So work wouldn't be that boring, "Rachel said, straightening her apron reminded by the conversation that she was working at the moment.
"Or you could work at the museum." Ross offered.
"That's so kind, but I really mean to work as a social worker again. Shouldn't be that hard for me."
"I can help you getting started if you want," Phoebe asked Kayla.
"You would?" Kayla said, turning her head and buddy in Pheobes' direction.
"Sure!"
"You're so sweet! Thank you!" Kayla paused her words to hug her friend Pheobe.
"And we could all help you send out your applications. Like we did when Rachel tried to find another job." Monica offered.
"Thank you all. I wasn't expecting that at all. So much support... I'm overwhelmed." Kayla whispered her last words, her eyes filled with tears.
"Dammit, I'm sorry. I don't know why, but I'm a happy-cryer."
"Aaand an Anry-Cry." Joey added.
"Also, you cry when you're sad." Chandler answered.
"Okay, I get it. I cry nearly all the time." Kayla started giggling. The rest joined her giggles.
"Okay, let's get started. Grab your bag. We need to buy you a bunch of newspapers."Phoebe said while grabbing Kaylas wrist.
"I'll join you. You need someone carrying all the stuff." Chandler said running after Kayla and Phoebe who already are on their way out of Central Perk.
"Bye everyone. See you later." Kayla yelled in a burst of energy to the other 4.
Kayla and Pheobe did indeed needed some help carrying everything back into Monica's and Rachels appartement. They bought tones of newspapers, envelopes and got to a copy shop to print a dozen of application letters.
"You need to slow down. I feel like a mule. In the deepest desert. Right before collapse." Chandler tried to get Phoebe's and Kaylas attention while being at least a little funny.
They both stopped their chatting.
"Oh," Kayla turned around just to notice that Chandler was carrying everything. "Sorry. Let me help you with that."
"Yeah... That really helped me handling the weight." Chandler sarcastically said as Kayla took one of the 6 backs from him. Of all the bags she picked the one with only the stamps in it.
Kayla smirked. "You said you joined us to help us carrying. Be careful what your saying, Bing." Kayla smiled mischievously looking right into Chandlers blue eyes. He returned her look and find himself lost in hers.
God...Her blue-green-brownish eyes are so beautiful. Why didn't I mentioned it earlier. Chandler thought to himself.
"Hey! What are you both doing?! Come on! There's plenty to do." Phoebe yelled, bringing both Kayla and Chandler back into the moment.
"Coming", Kayla yelled back. Before turning around she gave Chandler one of the sweetest and softest smile. Chandler blushed instantly, which didn't stopped him from smiling back to her.
Back in Monica's and Rachels appartement all the friends helped Kayla with her application. Kayla skimmed trough the newspaper advertisements on the sofa, Monica, right next to her, wrote the address on the envelopes. Rachel and Phoebe folding the letters, while Ross and Joey stuffeed them into the envelopes and Chandler closed them and put a stamp on everyone.
"That is the last one everybody.", Kayla said.
"Thank God. My tongue will never recover from this." Chandler whined while sticking out his tongue.
"Maybe it's the training you needed to impress the girls so any of them will date you longer than a week." Joey teased his best bud.
Everyone started to laugh. Chandler looked annoyed into Joeys direction.
"At least I date someone."
"Being at work on a Friday night doesn't count as dating Cahndler." Joey answered still laughing.
"I do indeed date someone!" Chandler said in anger.
"Okay, cool. Keep cool, buddy. If so, why don't you invite her to Rachels Party next week."
"I do, you'll see."
"Okay guys, don't get into a fight about that. Chandler, if you date someone I am very glad for you. Joey, don't be so harsh with your friend.", Kayla tried to cool down the argument.
"I don't wanna be the complaint box tonight to any of you."
Rachel tried to change topics; "So Kayla, how you feel about all your applications."
"I am excited. Feels like the next step to gain back a normal life ist there to be accomplished. And I think at there is at least one lucky one between all of these." Kaylas fingers wandering through the finished envelopes.
"Wish me luck."
Kayla grabbed her coat ready to walk out of the appartement into the post office.
"Thanks for your help. I don't know what I would do without all of you."
"Still folding letters." Chandler uttered.
A/n: Sorry for it being so long. I split the storyline in two so it is more enjoyable.
Hope you liked it so far. Let me know if you liked it or if you have any wishes for future parts.
Bye. ✨️
